I love this woman. Can you imagine how different going to school would be if everyone was taught this..? Good lord, middle school and high school would be completely transformed.
"You can never live the life that you wanna live and not disappoint other people. You're gonna piss some people off. You're gonna let down some people, if you are yourself."
Brené Brown just blows my mind every time I hear her speak ... her insights into the human condition are constantly insightful, but the most important part is that she understands both the good and the bad, she's never preachy, and a lot of her own power (at least to me) comes with her making herself vulnerable by letting us see that she has a lot of the same inner conversations with herself that we all have.
Watching this for the 10th time. This is phenomenal. The whole world needs to read her books. Make this go viral. Reading her books flipped me upside down. Everything I had doubts and questions about regarding shame, vulnerability and authenticity hit me in the face. Brilliant.
"You've got something that only you can bring. If you try to make everyone happy, you will not bring it. And not utilizing your gifts is dangerous." Man, it takes a lifetime to hear and understand these words. Thank you for them, Brené!
Thank you, Chase...for being such an amazing host, for hearing her the first time she was with you and being the BRAVE creative man you are. You were so generous and kind and I appreciated you both. Thank you for talking about these valuable "tools" and traits and helping instill in all of us more courage and permission to be ourselves. I appreciate your heart, your vulnerability and your enthusiasm for this fellow Texan. Big gorgeous thanks to both of you. Kiki PS...I want a T-Shirt!!
Brene thank you. Watching this reminds me that the things you are talking about are fundamentally simple but really difficult work on the daily and in that work is how you change and grow. It has to be hard and uncomfortable in order to change.
Her sense of humor is gold. Currently watching everything with her name in it on UA-cam and definitely needing to read her books. Thanks for sharing the great interview. :)
Wow wow wow. Found this through Growthday on Brendan’s list of videos to watch and I will definitely be reading Brene Brown and listening more. Please keep teaching this wisdom to young, old and us “troubled” with judgment of ourselves and others alike. God bless you Brene and this platform!

Whoever you are. There isn't an ocean big enough to fill the sense of gratitude I have for you stringing all of this together. Right now in my life, reading this today really matters.
“Why are we not being given these tools early in life” yeeessssss!! I’m with Ya! That’s why we all must be some kind of radical or voice for this change!!
Wow, I love Brené Brown, and still, I was not prepared for how incredibly strong this talk is. I actually caught myself saying "Brené Brown is God", haha. Absolutely amazing! Thank you so so much Chase, and all your team. And Chase, the space that you create with the people you interview is so precious. I love how relaxed, personal and deep it is. I wish I'll be as good as you one day :)
Two of my favourite people sharing. Love it. Thank you SOOOO much. FYI, I've striped the audio from the video to make it easier to consumer for the audience. I hope that this is ok (as I want to share the message to as many people as possible!).
Thanks so much for conducting (and posting) this truly excellent interview, Chase! I hope everyone watches it more than once, and please take notes. It's such an encouragement to know others are in the arena of creativity and getting their asses kicked for it. Stay true!
So good to have people like you and Brene Brown sharing your thoughts, teories and experiences with us. We should have more of this on our education growing up.
Chase! thanks for being on this journey out front and out loud. You and Brené Brown are game changers. Great show. Glad you're back. I actually woke up at 4am (with my meanest voices) and found this episode. Could not be more perfect.
I just found your show today and am hooked! I, too, am born and raised in Seattle (also at Greenlake) and am always looking for ways to grow myself personally. I am a huge Brene Brown fan and am now a huge fan of your show, too. Thank you for adding value to the world. How does one get lucky enough to get to be in your audience??
I feel like the most vulnerable thing for me in my life, personal and professional - is to REALLY try my hardest, and to give up all of life's little pleasures, thinking - if this doesn't work and I fail - I wasted all this time and showed people I cared and I am now on my face and lost....
Thanks for another brilliant show and for bringing Chase Jarvis Live back!! Get so much from these interviews - Brene Brown is one of my favourites. Both of you rock. :)
Tomorrow I'm gonna take notes while watching this incredible talk and her books are gonna be the first books, I'm gonna read after learning speed reading.
Ugh! Guilty! The exercise at the end at 1:09:00 made me cry!! That was rough! I am so thankful for all the great information, research, and tools!! So much needed!!1
I’ve fallen so far in the last few years 🥺 but working to pick myself up… among all then counselling I’ve had, the work by Brené Brown and Natalie Goldberg, as well as Gary Zukav, Shannon Kaiser and Randy Paterson… these five have been so influential on my life as I try to be a better person.
Confess I hadn't heard of Brené before (probably as I am UK based) but this was amazing and I have just watched her Ted talk - holy shit it's great. Thanks Chase (and Brené) - keep up the great work.
I think something is missing in this conversation.. and similar conversations.. it's about the why. I think Brene's information and research and insights are truly invaluable/incredible. And, I would like to hear about her thoughts on motivation in general. I think many people don't have a loving husband/children/family which I'm guessing may be part of her motivation. But, when she speaks of healing before addressing people we're having conflict with, or speaks of not people pleasing, or just accepting that failure will happen, I think she may be missing the fact that many people are motivated to find love and acceptance from others because they don't have it in their lives. So it's not about upset that other people criticize my work or even me, but perhaps a lack of love and connection with people in general. I always find it interesting when professionals with a background in psychology are giving advice on solving the problems in life, and in the advice, gently breeze by the fact that, by the way, you need one person who can be their to empathize with you and always love you and see the good in you, when in reality, not having that may actually be the biggest struggle, or having that would if not help solve most of the problems, it would at least put them in perspective and minimize the impact of them on you and the meaning of your life.
I feel like I'm in a similar place to what you describe. Yet I don't feel there's anything missing in this conversation. As I take it, only when you start to act the way they describe in this talk people can come and stay in your life. To empathize with you and love you. All the best
I find much wisdom (I love this woman) in Brene. I'm also at a similar place to what you describe--but, as my therapist pointed out--without vulnerability--it is hard (impossible?) to experience the deep emotional connections that I (and most humans) need--a core need. Chicken and egg. :)
Yes, you named something that was nagging at me for some time. I think there is so much pressure to create and produce something and rumble with failure that I started to have a narrative of 'not enough' when I don't pursue self-mastery in every moment of my life and 'don't put myself out there'. I seriously feel like I need to create a space in my life to just sit on the sofa and watch Netflix and not have to save the world. I love what I do and do try to do brave work, but really if everything disappeared tomorrow, all I care about is to have someone I love by my side. I don't know what I would do without them and yet there pressure to be out there is really too huge.
I understand your point and, therefor I comprehend what you mean. I might be in a similar situation to what you describe. I’ve lived by myself for the longest that I can remember (since I came out as gay) and for the most part I didn’t have that support your talking about but, at some point you have to remember that even when we’re in company (family, spouse, friends, etc) we’re alone. We all are living a journey of human development. So when you’re by yourself, you’re your own support. You have to train yourself to be your own coach, your own guru and your own counselor. Eventually you’ll attract people who feel comforted in your company.
Love your talks Brene Brown! Just noticing that you don't use the word "angry" but replace it with "pissed off." I've noticed that it's uncomfortable for people to be ok with using the word "angry" and admitting or owning that feeling--and that it's ok to experience. Especially with women who may feel shamed because it's "not nice" or acceptable (hello southern culture!) though men often replace "angry" with the more general and ambiguous "frustrated." just thought this was an interesting observation in semantics!
Anger is usually an expression of more basic emotions that a person either doesn't feel safe expressing or is not realizing(focused on the problem). For example, I stumbled on a lot of my anger being linked (from my perception) to decisions that will cause more future suffering or redundant unneeded future work. Sometimes anger can come from desire to have power over that which we have no jurisdiction but that does require internal reflection to identify.
ACK! I was at my work computer and my comment came across as Anonymous. "This is fantastic information, thank you so much. Reading "Rising Strong" now! I work with Deaf and Hard-of-hearing persons and would love to share this with them. Is there captioning available for this video?" I am a sign language interpreter and this work so hits home with us and what we do. Dr. Brown even signed "VULNERABILITY" during the talk. :D Thank you so very much!
Wow its so great that you guys are back! But as I have only little time to follow this on the screen I would love to listen to it on the go. Could you update your Podcast channel? Would highly appreciate it! Cheers
Yes, why are we not teaching kids how to reckon with emotions from day one!!! The world would be an entirely different, healthier, safer, more peaceful place.
On the mistaken email thing. I've made this mistake once and called my overseas hosts "weird women". I got a very cold reception when I arrived. Its best to only write emails that you would be happy to see on a billboard
Yes, I've been like this most of my life. The only snag I have found is extreme discomfort in typing out/documenting HR type emails. I wish I was better at that during trying situations.
43 1/2 minutes in Chase references the particular and the universal and said he read it somewhere and didn’t know where that came from. That sounds to me like Jiddu Krishnamurti.
Love this interview....started reading Rising Strong even before the interview was over since it is the only one in the trilogy I haven't read yet. WOW!
I know that this might not be important to some people, and it doesn't take away the fact that I definitely enjoyed this video and admire the work of Brene and yours Chase, but at 53:00 you reference who asked questions on the internet and you say that you have "people from Africa, England, Switzerland, Ireland..." . It really gets me when Americans do that. Why do you distinguish European countries (more, you even say England and not just the UK), but put everyone from Africa in one bucket? Africa has 54 countries, very culturally different from one another and let's not even talk about the size comparing to oher continents. Just something to think about for the next time ;-)
I love this woman.
Can you imagine how different going to school would be if everyone was taught this..?
Good lord, middle school and high school would be completely transformed.

I love this.

SO powerful 🎯
This woman is a saint I read her book while I was Incarcerated and it has totally changed my life
I’m glad you’re out now. I’m glad your mind is reacher in experience and endurance. You can guide other people from with your lessons.

It's incredible how I keep coming back to this to listen. Again and again and again. This is fucking phenomenal. Brene is a gift to this world.

i have depression & love art, i love how she spoken of creatives, her words help, and the more i see my own light the more i see she speaks truth
I hear you!
I wish I could either give this 100 LIKEs or a LOVE! She is transforming my life. Love you Brene!!
YOU are transforming your life!! :))) but I totally know what you mean - so so so inspiring
This has not got old! If anything is much more valid. She was so authentic, one of the first videos I saw here in. Massive respect.
Awesome talk. Always something to learn with Brené Brown... I listen to all her talks... yet there is always something new to take away!

ACK! I was at my work computer and my comment came across as Anonymous. "This is fantastic information, thank you so much. Reading "Rising Strong" now! I work with Deaf and Hard-of-hearing persons and would love to share this with them. Is there captioning available for this video?"
I am a sign language interpreter and this work so hits home with us and what we do. Dr. Brown even signed "VULNERABILITY" during the talk. :D Thank you so very much!
always inspired. Miss the brick studio! lol Loved the raw of the atmosphere!
"Its not the critic who counts" 8:03
"Crisis of confidence" 15:19
I want one of those t-shirts!
thank you both!
Wow its so great that you guys are back!
But as I have only little time to follow this on the screen I would love to listen to it on the go. Could you update your Podcast channel?
Would highly appreciate it!
Cheers
+Antal Vig gonna get a real update. standby....

So much inspiration from this talk. Really loved it! And has a huge list of quotes and insights added to my list from Brene :-)
Thanks Chase Jarvis!
FINALLY THIS SHOW IS BACK... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH
Love Brene’ Brown!!
I love how its all filmed in black and white.
+Nora Doski been B&W since 2010 !!
I think they just used black and white lighting
@@ChaseJarvis color would be nice from time to time
I am so grateful for you Brene, just AMAZING!!!
Omg, that made me laugh Wamuyu!! Yes yes yes!!!
Yes, I've been like this most of my life. The only snag I have found is extreme discomfort in typing out/documenting HR type emails. I wish I was better at that during trying situations.
This is awesome! Thank You!
43 1/2 minutes in Chase references the particular and the universal and said he read it somewhere and didn’t know where that came from. That sounds to me like Jiddu Krishnamurti.
#growaVulva and rise strong!!! #womyn
