    Everytime I hear someone talk about how they grow their hair just fine doing mostly wash and go's I get excited cause that's all I do and about all I'm good at when it comes to styling my hair lol. I do wash and go's 95% of the time since I big chopped 2 years ago and I am very pleased with my growth (arm pit length when straightened). Usually growth tips include protective styling but it's just not my thing other than wearing braids from time to time.

    I only do my hair once a week unless something comes up and I need to do it sooner. I mostly do wash n gos. I'm at waist length. Every wash day I deep condition. Never skip that.

  • @1GoldenBreeze
    @1GoldenBreeze 6 років тому +167

    I agree with you. I wear my hair in a wash and go probably 95% of the time. My hair is type 4, and not type 3 like yours, but that didn't stop it from gaining length as a wash and go wearer. It's not waist length at the moment, but that is a personal choice. I did let it grow to past waist length, and then decided to keep it cut shorter. Lately I've been thinking about letting it grow longer again, but I only had that thought after I just cut two inches off of it last month! rofl
    I guess my biggest tip is to keep it simple. I cleanse, condition or deep condition, apply my leave-in, and then my styler either gel or a cream styler. I do my wash and go in the shower because it is quicker and easier for me than trying to do them outside, and since I'm not a UA-camr I do not have to demonstrate to anyone how to do it so I have that freedom.

      Hey Allison, my favorites are As I Am Twist Defining Cream, Tgin Twist and Define Cream, and Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter. I use them just like I would a gel, so I put a leave-in on before I apply the creams.

    Perfect wash n go for me is leaving in a rinse out conditioner and topped with avocado oil. Air drying....that’s it that’s all!!! Had to go through a crapload of products to figure it out though lol!

    I've been using primarily wash and gos since my big chop in 2015 and my hair straightened is bra length now. my tips are:
    1) stop swapping products with every new wave that passes on. find what works for your hair and keep using it.
    2) dust your ends! create a schedule of trimming your ends and stick with it!
    3) drink water. it just makes everything better.
    4) enjoy your hair! regardless of the type, it belongs to you so enjoy it all!

    Just started doing wash and goes on my hair when I thought they’d never work for my hair type (4b/4c). This is the second week. And from the first week I learnt that my hair actually doesn’t tangle, sometimes it just looks like it is, my hair stays defined for days and my hair feels soft beyond the gel cast haha. Now I’ve been curious to know if I can actually wear this style often(every day, all day , for the rest of my life😂) and still grow long hair because my hair goal is waist length and I’ve always two strand twist my hair. My hair looks very fuller in this style and it’s encouraging seeing naturals in your comment section agreeing to your thoughts

  • @chrisallen1934
    @chrisallen1934 6 років тому +83

    My hair is SUPER crunchy on day 1, but by day 6, it’s soft but still has definition. I redo it once a week. That’s all. That hard Gel cast is critical! And I agree 100 percent with this wash and go advice, Cousin! I’ve long thought that so many UA-cam videos were a LIE. My hair is also waist length and I ONLY do wash and gos. I don’t know why people call so many of the styles I see on UA-cam “protective” styles, with all of the pulling and tension needed to get the style. There is nothing protective about a weave. Sorry. So many “protective” styles require manipulating too much! Wash and gos for LIFE. If a protective style causes thinning around the hair line...guess what? It ain’t protecting anything.
    I’ve noticed something really interesting too. When I get compliments from other black women on my hair, they almost always mention versatility AND my curl pattern. Here’s the thing: you can’t have BOTH. I have good definition and a solid curl pattern because I don’t have ANY versatility! I don’t blow my hair straight ever. Not even to cut it. No curling irons. No rollers. No braids or cornrows. I don’t do “protective” styles. I don’t wear wigs or extensions. I would LIKE more options, honestly, but you gotta make a choice. ANYONE can have a gorgeous wash and go...but they would let go if the idea of versatility. That’s just my OPINION. It’s not a rule. But if you want lovely, consistent curl pattern, you can’t mess with it. I wish I’d known all of this when I first went natural. I would’ve saved myself a LOT of torn out hair if I did.

    • @smiller4606

      chris Allen it can work both ways. It's really about low manipulation and moisture. I had to cut my hair short once and wore braids for about a year after. My hair grew to waist length. Same thing happened when I was wearing my version of a wash n go. To each her own.

    I keep my 3c/4a hair in a wash n go 98% of the time. When I want a break (sick of the SSKs), I'll 2-strand twist it up and let it rest for a few weeks (re-twisting weekly so it doesn't lock up). This stretches my tips and stops breakage. I've gone from a 1/2" TWA to 15" MBL in 3 1/2 years (with LOTS of trimming along the way).

    I can honestly say that my hair has grown a lot since being in a wash and go. I found it easier to deal with than a twist out. I love a good gel cast. Because I love Eco Style gel, I layer styling products to keep hair moisturized. It works wonderfully.

    It’s been a real struggle finding a wash n go routine that works for me, but I recently found something that works for me!
    I find that when I do a wash n go, it will last a lot longer if I allow my hair to air day at least 3-4 hours (or as long as possible) Then, use my blow dryer on the COOL setting, on high speed with a diffuser attachment, while gently pulling my hair downward, to avoid a lot of shrinkage as it’s drying. Once I’ve gotten the shape that I like, I use the cold setting all over my hair.
    When I do this, my hair does not shrink up as much, and I love the way it comes out. The gel cast definitely wears off a little bit but not completely. I’m able to get defined hair for 5 days by doing this!
    Also, your tips are always so helpful and you always keep it real! Thanks for showing that it’s possible to grow long, healthy hair while wearing wash n Go’s!!

    Awesome video! The beginning of this year I said I wanted to focus on hair growth and healthier hair. I found that deep conditioning and leaving my hair closer to its natural state (wash n fro and flexi rod set) allowed me to be able to massage my hair and grease often. For the first time in 3 years this year I’ve seen consistent growth 1-2in a month alternating products so my hair doesn’t get addicted to one. Using under $5 products. Thanks for the confirmation!

  • @chocletemilkshards
    @chocletemilkshards 6 років тому +15

    Yes to all of these! I agree, with the possible exception of the first tip. I've always held to that principle -- hell, I've taken my w&gs to two weeks believing in that very principle, but now I'm starting to rethink it.
    I think the key is not necessarily how often you style your hair, but how often you thoroughly detangle. If your hair maintains moisture AND definition, thus preventing tangles, throughout your w&g, then you don't have to detangle as thoroughly next time you hit your hair w/ water. Thus, I think (I'm still experimenting) doing w&gs that last 2-3 days, co-washing and lightly detangling when those days are up, and then regular wash day at the end of the week is just as beneficial as 7+ day w&gs.
    So far, doing this, my detangling time throughout the whole week has been shortened greatly. I spend like 45 minutes in total through the whole week on washing (including regular wash day) when doing w&gs that lasted forever and only washing once in the week took me anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on what my hair went through. And yes, those times include shampooing, detangling, deep conditioning, allat!

    • @noisetalker
      @noisetalker 6 років тому

      I have gone 9 days with NO problem with detangling...using okra gel kills ALL that noise! Okra gel has MANY uses it can be used in the prepoo process as well as styling...I've added a little to my deep conditioner too

    I agree with your tips Amber. You have to find what products work for you and technique. My wash n go last at least 7 days. Now that the heat is on I moisturize x 1 during that time. I have similar hair as yours - low porosity, fine hair. In the winter months I twist my hair and call it a day for at least 7 days. I oil my scalp with my hair oil concoction (Wasted my coins on so many in the past and didn’t like them) and scalp massages. Yes... your tips work - no magic here.

    My hair definitely grew the most with wash and goes. Idk if it was the products, the low manipulation, the daily watering, lack or washing/only cowashing...or what...but it was moisturized and flourishing and thicker. I stopped because it got long and my curls are sooooo skinny. I’m about to go back to them though. It’s the easiest style ever!

  • @InvisibleRen

    I have low porosity hair. I use Camille Rose butter aloe gel or whatever it's called. I've never applied it to dry hair, but on wet and damp, it glides on so smoothly and is easy to distribute. And it doesn't leave a residue when dry. I did a wash and go for the first time since starting the pre-poo and LC/LCO regimen and I was like "my coils and curls look bomb! but why is it so crunchy?" 😂
    Now I know it was a gel cast?!
    I had full shrinkage, though, and didn't want to go to work like that. so today, I saturated my hair and and let two strand twists sit for about an hour before untwisting. It stretched my curls and coils a bit and I loved it! I had waves on the roots of my dry hair when my waves usually never stay when my hair dries! And my coils were still popping, but there was definitely less shrinkage. If I do wash and go again, that's what I'll do and I recommend it to others who like wash and gos but have a ton of shrinkage. Untwist when your roots are like 40-50% dry. The twists will be damp inside. Don't fluff, just gently separate/blend and stretch downwards when you do it. If you want more volume, gently tug upwards by the roots.

I took a 3 week break from wash and go to do blown out twist outs. It was cool but to me it's even more work. This weekend I'm back on Wash and go. Gental and slippery with lots of leave in gel and oil on my type 4 tresses.

I agree it does make for a good week of style, but my hair does grow, I don’t have that problem but I just thought I was doing something wrong because it was stiff. I didn’t know how to break the cast so I just dealt with it. What you’re saying also makes sense that the leave in and whatever other products that are put in before the gel should be doing its job and the gel is the barrier to keeping it in. Curlfriend thanks. I’m good. I recently found a method that works for me, I use a leave in, hair butter and gel. Moisture and a not so hard cast. I finally got my wash and go down so I’m good.

    Interesting I did a wash and go and i kept it in for a week and it was really good. So I washed my hair today(wash day) and my hair felt thicker and fuller. I was very shocked because I always do twist outs and blah blah but I’m going to do wash n go 100% of the time ☺️.

    I LOVE wash n gos and to me they are low manipulation styles because when I wear a wash n go I hardly EVER touch my hair. My curls stay defined, my hair stays moisturized, and I can get a good 9 days out of it with no problem with knots or tangles. All I do is put a bonnet on at night and mist lightly in the morning and that's IT!

    And a wash n go tip I have is after you style shake your head so the curls can kinda unclump and fall naturally and if you are stretching your hair 5-7 days spray a little water on your hair and scrunch through w/ a light oil

  • @cierraaaaaaaas
    @cierraaaaaaaas 6 років тому

    I cowash once a week then put it in two cornrows and leave it for the next week. I used to do only wash n goes but my ends could not handle it. I was cutting more hair off because of single strand knots. If I do wash and goes I always use gel and I don’t pick nothing out or anything. I just let my hair be and as night I put it in 2 loose braids on the side of my head and refresh it with a bit of water the next day. I’ve had to get creative because I have low density hair so less definition makes my hair look thicker.

    I know that you're talking about wash and goes, but i dont wear them and i wanted to just say that you're right :D Shoots i wear my hair in twists the majority of the time (which is all the time) and i use a gel and i need the gel casts because i dont do my hair all the time and keep it in twists for the majority of the month washing in between and redoing it. My hair is midback length now and so it helps. Ove your videos btw ❤

The tip that works for ne is exactly what you said, my hair looks better, grows better and stays moisturized longer when I have a really good deep conditioner and I'm consistent (weekly). I use Texture ID hair mask. It works like noooooo other for me. Their products in general just works for my hair

    I do my wash n go in the shower on soaking wet hair with slippery products that make manipulating my hair extremely hassle-free and make sure I have to spend the least time in my hair detangling and spreading the products through my strands. I use trader joes tea tree tingle conditioner for detangling and I rinse it out but leave a little, just enough to keep my curls defined, I then put in the kinky curly products they have slip and lots of hold. Keeping each curl defined helps me with tangles and retaining length. My shampoo is subject to change but I usually use trader joes tea tree tingle shampoo and i pre-poo with black tea and my hair growth oil or curly proverbz fenugreek oil recipe depending on how I'm feeling. I also have type 4 hair if that info helps.

    LOVE LOVE LOVE this video...AND YOU Cousin!!!! I heard no lies here!!! Yes, being a lazy natural my go-to style has been a wash n go since my big chop back in 2015. And like you, I'm a Gel rocking natural (Eco on mines ALL DAY) and don't touch my hair for 1-2 weeks after initially washing/styling it! Also like you, I too have low-po hair so it takes a full day just for my hair to completely dry from root to tips, so I SHO' ain't bothering my curls in no 3 days! No ma'am! Keep up to good content cousin!

    I finally found one product that can give me a good wash and go. Ever since then I wear them everyday. My hair grew a little but it’s only been a month. I’m changing my hair regimen to see if I was breaking my hair. I even stopped using combs unless I really need to. I cannot wait for it to get longer because I am seeing some growth. Plus I’m using Jcbo too

  • @wannabe41

    I started doing wash and goes recently because 1) I now work out 3 to 5 days a week and needed to cleanse my hair and scalp and 2) It’s been hotter than 40 yards of hell in Chicago lately which makes it more comfortable to do wash and goes. I’m finding that my hair is loving the moisture and hydration even from just co-washing once a week. I shampoo once a week. I rarely stretch my wash and goes longer than 4 days because my type 4 (mostly 4c hair) starts to tangle. Don’t know if I’ll continue come winter because the thought of dealing with soaking wet hair when it’s under 32 degrees outside makes me shiver.

    • @ChelliMae
      @ChelliMae 6 років тому +2

      Katherine Miller same here! It’s been hot in LA so I had to take my wig off and wear a wash and go lol. I work out 6 days a week so washing my hair will be a lot simpler.

      Invest in a seated hooded dryer for your home. Going outside in the cold with wet hair in the winter can mess up your hair and hooded dryers cut my dry time from all day to 20-30 mins

    • @wannabe41
      @wannabe41 6 років тому

      Bluntly Blake Thanks! I have a hooded dryer and use it when I do my midweek wash and gos to dry my hair before I go to bed. Even with the dryer, I think I’ll be shivering when I’m styling my soaking wet hair in the winter.

    Love the video😍 the only reason I pick my hair on the first day is so it doesn’t like so shrunken. But I do t pick it to the point where my roots are crying for Jesus. But I like my hair to look frizzy and curly at the same time

  • @gigglyfitzgirl

    My wash and gos were going great but then my hair started shrinking more and more and I don't have volume so I didn't like the outcome at all. I tried cutting it into a decent shape but that didn't work out either. So I do more of a "wash and fro" look. I'm gonna wait till it grows out more. But it seems like the more it grows the more it shrinks. 😤😤😤

      Hey Girl, I JUST started doing something that’s really reduced my shrinkage. I started doing a proper deep conditioning treatment. Like, before I thought I was deep conditioning, but I was really just leaving it on for about 5 minutes in the shower. I’m impatient 🤷🏽‍♀️. But I saw a UA-cam video about proper deep conditioning and thought I’d give it a try. Whoah! Like, model hair. I couldn’t believe it! I got one of those heat holding silver caps from Amazon. It doesn’t make the hair HOT, but it does hold in a fair a amount of body heat. And I left it on for about an hour. I’m sure it could work with a half hour. But the result was so worth it! My hair started out long and stayed long all week, but didn’t have the flattening effect on my curls that some methods do. Like banding.
      One more thing, if you’re into a styling product option. Dark and Lovely makes an “anti shrinkage” product in their Au Naturale line. That works too, but I stopped using it because I didn’t love the way it made my hair feel even several days after styling. I don’t mind a hard gel cast, but this was a little bit sticky. Worth a shot, though, if you’ve tried everything else. I will say that my hair LOOKED great from day 1, with no hard gel cast, so that’s good. I’m probably just too much of a creature of habit...

    I tell all my friends about you but especially your cg method videos to start them off until they find their own methods.....I followed you and my hair grew from collar bone to "boob" length in like 6 months.....so after that I've only been doing wash n gos and my hair doesn't shed as often nor do I get split ends - like literally at all - (I trimmed in March and haven't seen any split ends yet)

    I have been subscriber and watching you for awhile, but never leave a comment. I had to this time because I took your advice and stopped hating on my gel cast. Let me say it's the best advice I have heard. I let my hair get hard and let it be. Srcunched hair oil in my hair on the 3rd. Honey best wash and go to date. Plus I also replaced my leave in with hair milk. Let's just say I got new routine and moisturized poppin curls.

    I never fluff my wash n go😂😂 my nightly pineapple stretches it enough... and i love a good gel cast!!! Ive been starting to wear middle parts and i slicked my hair behind my ears and it NEVER dried!!! Even after 2-3 days. So how do you slick down the front and ensure it stays in place and it DRIES???
    Oh and ive told you already the wet brush changed my wash n go game!

  • @natbaker2561

    I'm watching this because I've been wearing wash n gos everyday for a year. Consistently I wash once a week and my hair lasts a week. I dont pick out the curls at all for the "full look" But I rarely put gel in my hair. When I put oil in my hair it sheds more, curls frizz more and is more difficult to detangle but I still try to do it. Lately I was debating trying something else but this is motivating me. Though my real issue is trying to combat shedding. Looking at the hair that comes out in the shower my hair seems to be coming out at the roots. I'm struggling with this for a month now. But hopefully I find the cause soon.
