I've never been swimming daily in fresh water. However, my naturally high porosity short hair does airdry very quickly.....

    I love how Anthony has preached the importance of hydrating tighter curls more often and it makes sense. I have been doing WnG for over a year now about 6 days a week. I don't over complicate my style so it's easy to do and honestly it's therapeutic. Before I had a terrible scalp issue so I love to keep my scalp as clean as my body. No more scalp issues, my hair is fuller and stays soft, it never tangles.

      Yeah as I've gotten older my scalp does not like products at all. So I shampoo every week with a scalp-specific shampoo. If my scalp feels too sensitive or itchy or tight between shampoos. I have a scalp-specific mist and gel that I can use.

    I did his method when I first began my journey and my hair thrived. I did a wash and go no less than five times a week. I cowashed, as opposed to shampooing. I probably shampooed every three weeks. It’s not as crazy as it sounds. If you are using somewhat clean products, and cowashing with a decent conditioner every day, there is no build up of junky product and dirt!
    As I’ve searched for the magic solution to a wash and go that lasts 7 days, my hair has been far less happy and healthy. So, I’ve found myself doing my wash and go more often. I tried twice a week, and that’s better. This week, I’ll do it three times. Just doing some trial and error as far as frequency. Something tells me every other day is going to be the optimal frequency.
    And, Jen is right. As you get better at the technique and your hair becomes fully hydrated, it takes no time at all. I can cowash, section and style in less than 30 minutes.

      @sparker7768 Рік тому +18

      After watching several of Dickey's videos (including a Q&A), it seems that the daily "wash" IS actually a cowash, and then you wash with a shampoo 1/week (or spaced out, like you're doing). This is working better for me also, vs struggling for a 7-day w&g set which always ends up dried out (for my hair).

    Thanks for sharing this! I was iffy about the "wash everyday" part of Anthony's philosophy until he explained that just like straight hairs wash every day to eliminate oily build up, kinky hairs should wash everyday to encourage hydration because we *don't* get the oily build up that would help with moisture retention. This made sense to me, so I *finally* tried the Dicky method for a week and got *excellent* results! He also says, the more you do it the better your hair will react. For me, it's all true!!! I'm 3 months and going strong! Although, I could not do this successfully on a daily basis without my *bonet hair dryer* ! I "bake" my curls for 30 minutes then I'm good to go for the day!
    BTW I must admit that sometimes my curls look so great the next day that I skip a wash day now and then. But can't go longer than 3 days without some kind of wash, cowash or rinse of my hair.

    I used to wet my hair almost daily back in 2015 when I did my big chop and I retained so much length within the 1st year. I honestly feel as if I gained all my length. My hair was never crispy dry and it was easy to wash and detangle since it was always moisturized. I definitely feel like the constant moisture is very helpful and even if you don't do this method every day, I feel like every 2-4 days is ideal as well.

    Your hair looks fabulous. I have gotten my wash and gos down to about 30 minutes. That includes my shower self care routine. I usually do mousse only wash and gos using one of the mousses from The Doux. I only use gel if I want to skip a few days of washes. With just the mousse, it only takes about 10 minutes of diffusing to get my hair dry enough to get out the door. What I love about the (almost) daily wash and gos is my hair doesn't have time to get tangled and I don't suffer as much breakage. Thanks for sharing your journey.

    Aeliese of Cut it Kinky (frmly of BGC) said in a recent IG live (I don't think it was saved tho) that she was originally trained by Dickey. That is why the language is the same.

  • @clairedaniels1877
    @clairedaniels1877 Рік тому +73

    His philosophy has quite a few differences from BGC. I’m not sure where y’all are getting that their philosophies are that similar.
    1. With your tight curl pattern, he would recommend you cowash daily and use a no-suds cream shampoo once a week. For example, his No Suds Cleansing Cream Shampoo or the As I Am Coconut Co-wash which is inferior to his cream shampoo (my opinion). He would not recommend you putting suds in kinky hair except like once every 3 months as a treatment to remove buildup. He doesn’t recommend using them on a regular basis for your hair type. He doesn’t care if it’s a sulfate free shampoo. If it suds at all, he suggests you don’t use them but about once every 3 months. He said that if kinky hair is cowashed daily and using a no-suds shampoo once a week, you should never need suds.
    BGC tells us to use sulfate free shampoos that bubble/suds up every 7-10 days. They do not think a no suds cream shampoo is cleansing enough and that you should only use them when your hair isn’t really dirty. Like for day 3-5 hair to refresh your style. They don’t recommend daily cowashing and instead told us to use the steam from the shower to fluff hair.
    2. A LOT of Hair Rules products have silicones in them. His No-suds cream shampoo has a silicone and he’s saying to use that once a week. His quench conditioner has 4 silicones. The two ingredients ending in oxane are silicones. So essentially, he’s telling you to put silicones in your hair everyday except maybe once every 3 months when you use a suds shampoo as a treatment to remove buildup. He recommends Hair Rules Aloe Grapefruit Purifying Shampoo which is sulfate free and has no silicones as a treatment for kinky hair to remove buildup.
    BGC doesn’t recommend products with silicones at all unless you’re gonna be using heat to blow-dry/flat iron. The reason is that silicones will act as a sort of heat protector. Aisha has said a shampoo with silicone can’t remove buildup.
    3. He pushes hair versatility. Wearing wash and go’s AND wearing it straight. He said it’s fine to come in and get a flat iron once a month. Because if you’re following his philosophy and doing daily wash and go’s and staying away from suds, you shouldn’t get any heat damage because your hair will be hydrated and not dried out. He said heat damage comes from dry hair. And you get dry hair by not doing wash and goes frequently and using suds shampoo too often. He said 4c hair needs to be cowashed daily. He said your hair should be it’s own heat protectant and you can’t buy a heat protector in a bottle.
    Aleise has said natural hair cannot be versatile and doesn’t recommend straightening it. She also told us to use a sulfate-free suds shampoo to remove buildup before straightening. This is a no-no with Dickey. You’re drying the hair out before straightening it which may cause heat damage.
    Edit: Also, Aisha said she got heat damage recently. She said she was doing too much. Not sure what that means. Her hair was most likely dried out from only washing it every 5-10 days. Dickey does not recommend that hair type sitting for that long without washing. It’s gonna dry out.
    4. Dickey doesn’t cut hair curly because you can’t see all the ends. He cuts for health.
    BGC rarely talks about the health of your ends. They focus on shape. They don’t recommend cutting hair blown out if you’re gonna wear wash and go’s.
    These are pretty big differences to me. I have quite a few of his products but I love sulfates. His No-suds cream shampoo is the best I’ve ever tried. It takes some getting used to but as I cowash daily and really agitate my scalp and hair as if I’m really washing it, I find I don’t need a stronger shampoo with suds. I just like bubbles and I like how sulfate shampoos open up the cuticle more. I have his quench conditioner which is sooo good. I don’t care if it has silicones. It feels good on my hair. I’m trying to stick with his hair philosophy and see if works for me.

    • @britjj5126
      @britjj5126 Рік тому +1

      @@Mocha_Dimples I love sulfates too. I used to co wash back in the day but no longer as my hair and scalp actually behaves better when I shampoo and condition (with a moisturising brand) every 3 days. I clarify once a month with something like heads and shoulders.
      Aisha is the one with bleach blonde hair right? That probably also contributed to the damage. Bleach on natural plus heat will definitely damage it over time and she was getting it done every so often.

    Beautiful! I have known, since I went back to loose natural a year ago after 14 years in locs, that my hair loves, LOVES water, so it got a good spraying every day (to where i was leaving the house with moderately damp hair every day). But, coming across the Anthony Dicky method "changed" my life. Especially when he instructed to get the cheap &*(&(* for the daily "washes" between wash days, so that I can use as much conditioner as I have hair, LOL! Let me tell you. After a week, I went from a pickle ball sized wad of hair down to a few strands at the end of a wash and style session. I have not picked up a comb or a detangling brush in a few weeks. Almost makes me feel like I have locs again. LOL. I do the method most days, but sometimes I skip a day. There will also be times that I do more protective styles like twists. Another great piece of advice he gave as to wash your hair at night if mornings were not it. The fact I do not have to worry about working out or swimming anymore, and that those work outs fall into an every-other-day schedule makes this even better. My hair surprised me. My coworkers already told me they were a bit jealous of my 4c curl definition, but this Anthony Dicky method took that to a whole other level.

Idk, my hair is doing fine with no butters and oils. I actually stopped the oils in the 80’s when Oprah’s hair stylist said the same. I think the impracticality of a daily stylist that requires to wet the hair hair down is why bgc has said 4-10 days (depending on your hairs needs & climate) is good enough for most, also considering lifestyle factors (job, responsibilities). Bgc are women -- moms and have been partnered, i do wonder if that factored into the the divergence in philosophy
    I think exposed hair in the shower, using steam to reactivate products in the hair is generally good as the in-between of a wet down/cowash/shampoo and nothing at all, especially when most of the products are humectants.

    The shampoos and tap water are
    enemy to 4c hair.
    And get a steamer : use at least once per month- gets conditioner or deep mask deep into hair shaft.

Otherwise, I have a gentle scalp shampoo that won't completely strip my scalp or strands. I moisturise my hair every single day in the summer in my loose wash and go. Whether it's a co-wash from swimming or drenching it in refreshing mist or leaving it in. sometimes I'll stretch it before bed with two or three ponytails or french braids but I will always moisturize. The Anthony Dickey method was both positive and negative for me… let me explain. I found this method years ago. And an incredibly grateful for making my wash and go’s so much easier. I did wash my hair every day for about a year. At first my hair thrived. I could actually just wash, style and go in about 20 minutes easily. I have 4b hair. After a while my hair texture changed. My curls got looser and looser. Soon my hair started to break. I just couldn’t retain my length. It took me a long time for me to realize that I naturally have high porosity hair. And washing it everyday was weakening it. I still use his method to achieve my wash n go’s, but I have wash my hair once or twice a week. As opposed to washing it daily.

Aleise says it in several lives, that she met him in 2010, and it's where she learned how to do wash n gos. The main difference, is BGC teaches you about intention. As in the what, how, and why of haircare! The only thing that I disagree with, is Sooo the hair everyday. He does suggest cowashing in between, but In most stylist, and cosmetology doing the hair can lead to overworking the strands. Always listen to your hair and scalp. If it doesn't like moisture every day..dont' do it. My scalp doesn't like oil or butters so that rules out all growth oils for me. Lol! I was to busy studying and trying to survive to be doing all of that. Now I went to see trichologists and they told me to moisturize my hair every day. It was difficult at first but once I got into the hang of it, doing quick daily styles or styles like flat twists that I can wet/dampen every day and still wear as a style, it's so much easier and not damaging! I only apply styling products once a week though I have fine hair and a sensitive scalp..my scalp will not like gel and mousse every day or every other day. It tolerates leave-in mists and leave in conditioners enough but I still don't put those directly on my scalp. Yeah see I can be washing my hair everyday... my scalp would be so itchy!!! And that sounds like too much work. I'll still to my every 2 weeks. But see this is why I really start away from wash n gos... to me their high maintenance and when you're not keeping them up they lead to the worse tangles and knots

    Just wondering if this wash and go would have worked as well for you had you not already been doing the no oils/no butter. I’ve been watching you for several years now and noticed you have that kind of hair that looks great whenever you have the time to do it. And especially so when you have a good cut as you do now. You can say it’s Dickey, but I say it’s genes and how you have been caring for it over the last few years. IMHO💕

      I always say: take care of your hair and it will flourish 😌. But it’s an interesting question re: no oils. I’ve seen videos of people doing the wash and go his way and it still looks good

      I have a mohawk...my hair always looks better when super moisturized and super hydrated. I think the key for most people is to get as much moisture as possible into the hair and not to damage it. Yeah the cut helps but half my head was bald for 3 months so.....wash day was a breeze with less hair!!

      @@JennJackson I only listen to my trichologists.... about half of the time and I still love my hair. Lol! They were annoyed with me getting my bleached highlights😅 but I am still in love with the highlights 6 months later....lol! I do have some damage but that more me not hydrating and protecting my hair enough ( my hair does not really like wash and go's even if I do in summer) and my usual weak points around the hairline and crown. At least now I know what to do to get it to grow back quickly and no one can tell but me, my stylist and my trichologist. I wanted to focus on other things so I think i needed that challenge to stop being so precious over my hair.

      It’s amazing that you read and answer so many comments! Kudos for taking the time. I wet my hair every day in the shower but I don’t always add more product. The drying part is a slight negative for me too because I don’t have time to sit under a hooded dryer or to diffuse fur more than 15 minutes and since I like air drying anyway, I leave home early in the morning with wet hair and I’m ok with it. The key is doing it on a time frame that works for you. Keep doing you and sharing your journey with us. I love the vibe of your channel. 💗

      Your hair doesn't poof up in the humidity if you go out with wet hair? I'd love to be able to just let my hair air dry outside, but I can't imagine doing that in the summer humidity.
