Years ago I was at a festival watching Subway to Sally. We arrived early to get in front and watched the Roadies set up the stage. When one Roadie checked the mic we startet chanting what he said: "One-Two-Three-Check-One-Two-Three-Check!" at the end he started leaving the stage, stopped, returned to the microphone and just said his name: "Uwe". And we all started chanting "U-WE! U-WE! U-WE!" Man, was that guy happy when he left the stage. :D
Months later I saw Subway to Sally playing in a small venue and when the supporting band finished their set and the Roadies starting to set up the stage for Subway I spotted Uwe setting up stuff. And I yelled "Hey, UWE!!". When he realized why someone on the crowd knows his name he had a beaming grin in his face!

Uwe was rather a joke at especially western concerts. My best friend at that time shouted "Uwe" at all roadies. One day with "Virginia Jetzt" she, the roadie and even the singer came into conversation over this.
The singer of "Virginia Jetzt" after they dissolved was sound technican for "Casper" few years later, saw me after a huge concert and asked how she was. HEr drunken self mad a lasting impression :D

This song forms part of one of my favourite rock memories. Back in 2011 Foo Fighters were touring Australia with Tenacious D supporting. While the roadies were setting up for The D I noticed this one older roadie with a huge, long biker beard. As I watched him work I thought "that man would have so many stories. He's probably worked every major band that's ever toured Australia over the past few decades." Later, Tenacious D performed Roadie for one of the first times ever. During the song, the camera came over Biker Roadie standing off the side of the stage watching the song, tears streaming down his face. When he appeared on the big screen, the entire stadium erupted into cheers. It was a simple moment, but incredibly magical.

I saw The D in 2019 and before they played Roadie, Jack Black pretended to collapse on stage. A roadie came out to 'resurrect' him and they launched into the song. The Roadie was exactly like you described, he was an older guy with a huge biker beard. He's probably toured with The D for years. After the song JB brought him on stage and he bowed haha

As a German, who worked as a voluntary stagehand at a lot of conventions for about 20 years, I can confirm a lot of that lyrics, but what i can't confirm is the applause for the crew. The organizers made sure, that we volunteers were not only taken care of, but that the bands, theatre groups, comedians and cosplayers thanked us and made the crowd thank us, too.
Additionally, Germany has mandatory health insurance and (depending on the size of the event) emergency services onsite (i'm talking red cross tent with EMTs and a doc in the parking lot). If you are employed and not just volunteer or a rented roadie (subcontracted/selfemployed and paid by the hour), you also get unlimited paid sickleave (income drops by 30% after 6 weeks and is paid by the health insurance, not your employer), but if you are actually in a union and get injured at work (or on the way to and from), you can get even more benefits from the union (nice perks, like a private room in the hospital and shit, for free).
    Edith found some typos

    • @Neithan02

from my experience working as stagehand etc in germany, depending on the "sophistication of the job" most are self-employed and then all that stuff falls together.
You have the madatory healthcare and that does not come cheap and with no contracts, you're fucked, as in, not being able to pay bills, which can then get you things like 700 euros/month punitive healthcare charge

    • @caligo7918

@@Neithan02 fair enough, but if you're self employed and can't make enough money to pay the bills, you really need to switch jobs. I tried hard to get into the job when i was younger, but the companies had bare minimum staff and booked self employed people as necessary. I did not want to go there, so i went into IT and did the Stagehand stuff as a hobby for years.

@@caligo7918 I know, experienced the calculations with the jobcenter myself (and later worked for a while for the german version of the IRS, too, those have to deal with all that accounting on the receiving end)...
the point is, however, that if you are self-employed, healthcare is not cheap, unemployment stuff can be a hassle and on top of that retirement funding is also on yourself.
and many comapnies in the event business will try to scrape by with self employed people just to save on personnel costs.
Heck, I've known companies that did the events for Japan Tobacco International and pretty much nobody of their event crew has not self employed.
we're talking ~may to september 2-3 events per week (as in club evenings, festivals, lobbying events for political parties and so on) and they still had just had a list of self employed people on standby.

I used to be a regular volunteer festival steward/marshal (name depending on the festival and the role within it) and even met my wife of 35 years (at the end of this month) through doing so at her first festival volunteering, and I was her shift leader and owing to severe weather took her home by motorcycle as her ride was mired in a field, but the closest I got to any instrument tech work was when I was stage security and Barry Mcguire's guitar went out of tune mid-set and he couldn't tune it so I did - and got a cheer, and an acknowledgement from Barry at the end of the show. The funny thing is - I have never played the guitar, but I'm a violinist, and while I was still in practice, had perfect pitch (no frets to help you on the violin). I just had to ask which note to tune each string to (yeah, that really is how little I knew about the guitar). I've no idea why he didn't have his own tech to do that, especially as he freely confessed to being unable to tune it by ear - no electronic tuners back then, so maybe he used pitch pipes and had left them in his hotel room?
My perfect pitch also came in handy when I was singing in Male Voice Choirs, as on occasion we'd arrive at a venue to find the piano out of tune, so I learned to deal with that for our accompanist. The worst example was a gig at the large social hall of a Rugby Club that had borrowed a piano (actually from the local mental asylum, where one of the committee members there worked - so Pythonesque you couldn't make it up!) for the occasion, but moved it themselves in a van and neglected to tune it at all - it sounded as if someone had thrown it downstairs. It took the combined efforts of our musical director and me just over an hour to get it playable, but the gig went off alright, if belatedly.
That was the evening gig on the way back from recording during the day at the BBCs Maida Vale Studios for national broadcast, so a pretty wild contrast in one day!
Also the day I found out how unusually deep my voice was back then, as the BBC techs struggled to find a mic for me - I gather the one they found was generally used for some of the larger drums.

As a musician myself, even tho im not popular or play super big concerts, it's super important to me to show some Love for all the Roadies, Techs, security, catering, basically everyone who helps me bring a smile to the faces in the audience is just as important as any of my band members.
It is natural for me to give a shout out to them at the end of a concert and thank each single one of them personally, even if its just a small pat on the Shoulder, a nod or a "Nice Work Buddy".
If you show respect you get it back and it seems like sadly quite some people dont do this at all. Atleast from what i heard talking with techs and by the slightly suprised reaction i get when doing so.

From what I remember being told, 'One, Two Three Four' is generally used for mic checking because with those four words you're actually covering the vast majority of sounds you are likely to make during the show. Not sure if that's true or not, but it does make some sense.

    • @chrishubbard64
      @chrishubbard64 2 роки тому +1

Its also possible that the words themselves dont matter, but its a bit like a tuning fork, you recognize what those words should sound like coming from a properly setup mic whereas coming out and saying random things wouldnt be as obvious for clarity sake. So everyone sticks to check one two three four or some combination out of familiarity.

Never been a roadie, but have worked in backstage in professional theatre in a variety of rolls, including set builder, mechanist, audio and sparky/lx tech, so can relate to that feeling of pride that comes with the audience enjoying the fruits of your labour. In theatre, however, the "talent" don't know how to do much of anything but act/sing, so as the old saying goes, "without the back stage crew, all an actor can do is stand naked on a dark bare stage and emote to an empty auditorium".

As a roadie, does it mean a lot when an artist takes the time to shout out the crew? As a fan, I have always thought it showed some good character on the part of the artist and I always applaud and cheer accordingly, but haven't thought about what those moments mean to the roadies/crews.

    • @TheKIDmotovlogs
      @TheKIDmotovlogs Рік тому +2

I'm a roadie and stagehand/audio engineer. I can tell you from my audio engineering prospective when I get a shout out from the band it means a lot. I put a lot of hard hours loading in the show and then usually with limited time especially when I'm working for a new band I work really hard and really fast to create the best sound I can for them and trying at the same time to be as true to their sound as possible, with sometimes minutes to go until the doors open. So to hear a kind word and respect from the band about the feat you just pulled off to make that artist have the best show they can and the crowd to have the best experience gives a great sense of pride.
Also for those that don't know some days we will be hard at work for 20 hours or sometimes more, even going as far as to be eating food while continuing to work because of a time crunch.
So there's definitely a great sense of pride to build and entire show and take it down in a day, and the acknowledgement of your hard work is a great feeling.
I had a show specifically where I got an on stage shoutout as a monitor engineer from the artist who said my audio was pristine, and I'll always remember that.

I remember music festival I went to in 2012 with bands like In Flames and Nightwish in lineup (probably one of the best days in my life lol). Before one of the gigs, I don't remember which one, some roadies got on stage to set up lights (I think?). One guy climbed on the stage scaffold, almost fell and when he finally did what he had to do, the whole crowd was cheering and clapping 😅
I just wanna say that I appreciate your work, Tank and I'm impressed with your knowledge, probably because I know nothing about instruments and I feel like I'm learning from your videos 🤗 So thank you for what you do!

So fun to watch! You should urgently take a look at: "Dr. Hook and the medicine show" : "Roland the roadie and Gertrud, the groupie". Take my word: you're gonna laugh your ass off!
Legendary: the played a show in Roskilde, Denmark. And when some girls in the audience flashed 'em, they stripped naked on stage. (Dunno if there is a documentary of that.)
Plus I once came about the "said to be" mantra of the roadies: Ever heard about such a thing? ( I have to admit: it's painting a pretty poor picture of the life of a roadie.)
I'll tell you on your answer ;-)
    Stay safe!

and the check one two three, any sound can be used but that one is easy and simple. Saying one excites low frequency Saying two does high, Saying three does pinched sounds and the check is good for attack or explosive sound, so by using that simple phrase they can adjust the mics on all levels to work out if certain noises are going to make it feedback or have mic pop, and other tinny weird shit that is unpleasant for the earballs.

Well, I didn't work as a roadie, but I was a production manager. And I Never (!) got to see that moment when "the crowd roars" because I was backstage, managing a bunch of last minute questions. I guess that was one of the most frustrating things for me - never get to see the show. And it doesn't matter, how well prepared you are, there's always a "disappeared beer" problem, or flights rescheduling, or something like that. Those flights reschedulings! It seemed, the tighter the band's schedule was, the more avia companies moved the flights, arrrrh!
And then after the show the bands were like: it was so great, thank you so much, let's go to the afterparty! And I was like: give me some sleep!
I loved the TV series Roadies because they showed all of us so well! With the managers, from the first hotel scene, that's so true, our workday easily could start a couple hours after we went to sleep XD
And I was really glad to find your channel! I guess, you can never leave it completely behind ;-D
Thanks for all the videos and just for opening the discussion))

Well over a decade ago, I recall going to a metal show that was Gojira, Machine Head and Lamb of God headlining. I don't remember much about the show itself, but I still recall... and my friends and I still reference it to this day... the guy who was checking the mics before Machine Head went onstage shouting funny/ridiculous stuff into the mic to check them like "Smoke weed!!!" or "Eat pussy!!". Which, of course, got everyone in the crowd waiting to cheer along with whatever he was saying.

The "check the mic"-bit reminded me of a live I went to many years ago as a teenager. I can't remember which band it was but we were all standing around waiting for the show to get started when one of the roadies came on stage to check the mic. He started out with the usual "checking one, two". The audience shouted "f*ck you" right back at him to which he responded "Yeah, f*ck you guys too, one, two". It kept going back and forth until in the end the roadie and the audience were just shouting "f*ck you" at each other, until he got the "all clear" to go and do something else. It was all done in gest from both sides and resulted in laughs from both roadies and audience. A silly and dumb thing, but still a memory that I laugh about even all these years later.
I had no idea about the all black-thing. I guess it makes sense though now that I think about it.
