I was an infantryman deployed to Baghdad in 2005. This is way too accurate. We worked 12hrs on checkpoint, 12 on QRF, 12 on FOB security, and 12 on missions, training, vehicle maintenance, etc. Then start over again. We were told to rotate out 2hrs at a time on each 12hr shift to total our mandated 4hrs of sleep in a 24 hr period. We did this for 11 months.

Haha I use to sleep 2-3 hours a day deployed. Most of it was in the guard shack in full kit in a chair one would sleep half the shift and other would sleep the other half. 4 hour shifts. Then do two 8 hour missions a day. Would only be able to eat waiting to go on mission or right after mission. That's that infantry life.

We had a 7-day work schedule... at least 12 hours per day on a good day. Usually up to 14 hours. Maybe a Friday morning off, but that would still bite us in the ass since we still would have work 12 hours (from noon to midnight). It took like a month for the moral to go down to a historical low. A CSM gathered us and asked, why the hell our morale goes down and everything is good... Meanwhile, he had 8 hours shifts and played video games during his work. Yeah, why the hell our morale was going down, and he was having a ball. I don't know.

Funny thing is, although I was in like 1st grade in 2005, I dont think the pt belt thing is a joke. One of our older section chiefs was talking about when he was in Iraq in 2006 they had to have pt belts on during patrols. Maybe he was fucking around but this is the second time I've heard that now

You know why there's no video's of what it's like in the AF to deploy during this time? Because we don't want the Army to blow a gasket and come after us lol. I was maintenance and helped set up Salem back in the day and we thought it was really bad that we had to sleep in those tents that blasted insane amounts of AC and made the whole thing sound like the inside of a Doritos bag. Also we slept on cots...ya...and that's why we don't make video's. Our hell is your guys RnR (literally, Salem was the Army's "rest" base for troops time off lol)

All bullshit aside, in 2005 i was deployed with the mighty 3rd ID. As a redleg, my platoon was split just like this. Week one: Day gun. We were in support to counter fire from 0800 to 2000. Monday through Sunday. Sunday night at 2000, for weel two, night gun started from 2000 to 0800. Yes, 24 hours shift. On week three, we were on detainees guard and gate guard. 8 hours shift rotation. And on week four, it was PMCS and patrolling around Balad. Kicking doors, QRF, and my favorite body guard the commander whenever he wanted to shake hands and kiss babies. "Winning heart's and minds". The whole time we had to use those useless earplugs. ROE were a joke. They wanted us to stop and let traffic by. Yeah, sitting ducks... Now looking at those times, we had it better than today's sissy Army. Lol
