For the longest time i did not understand why Samuri's kept their weapons sheathed until the strike, thought it was some Hollywood film gimmick. But i recently found out that it was a legit combat move. The reason was to hide the length of the blade, if the blade was extra long and your opponent could not gauge the distance to stand away from you, you could wound him with the first strike. If the blade was short, you could hide your disadvantage until a desired distance was achieved. And the real life Samurai duels ended within 1-3 strokes, not like long 100 stroke Hollywood action sword plays, unrealistic because the blade would be worn/dull after 100 strikes against each other.
That, and the length of the sword also kinda determined the speed of your iaijutsu (the move where you draw and cut in one move)... A katana, though it gave you a reach advantage with its 1 meter blade, was generally too long and unwieldy for an effective iai strike, often requiring the swordsman to move the scabbard backwards with the left hand while pulling out the blade with the right to have any sort of striking strength left in the attack by the time the sword finally came out, and by then a skilled opponent could've easily blocked your right arm, effectively preventing you from drawing the sword in the first place. So, yeah, no, a katana was generally not a great choice for an iai strike, if you had one of them you could just as well just draw it the normal way but keep it in a grip where your body blocked the opponent from seeing the length of the blade... The wakizashi was generally, with its 60 cm blade, a much more optimal choice for an iai strike, giving the swordsman both a decent reach, and not requiring all too exaggerated movements to swiftly and efficiently getting the sword out of its scabbard... And then there were those who used a tantou or a similar dagger-length blade in a katana scabbard. That weapon came out _very_ swiftly, but was instead a bit lacking in length, requiring the swordsman to stand much closer to their opponent. So, you're standing in front of a samurai with his sword in its scabbard. He grips the scabbard with his left hand and reaches for the hilt of the sword with his right. Now, rock, paper or scissors? Do you bank on it being a katana and move in to intercept him drawing the sword? Do you risk advancing fast enough that he could take a step forward and get you within reach of a dagger that'd come out with lightning speed? Do you wait, risking that he's got a katana that'll give him a reach advantage? Mind games were a surprisingly big part of samurai duels, and no-one had the art of playing mind games on his opponents better worked out than Miyamoto Musashi.
I hope that they have different mechanics like sword oils, sword care, different stances, and instead of stats, more skills. Killing people with a dagger in one poke is boring.
@@koin176 Going by what we've seen so far, I dunno if it's worth getting one's hopes up... I mean, I've seen no stance switching so far and the blocking mechanic seems a bit too safe for my tastes... But more skills should definitely be possible, and sword care could be a nice addition, though I'm not exactly expecting us to see sword care in the game... Guess I'm just trying to keep my expectations low so that the game won't disappoint me.
@@GrahamChapman It's not completely unheard of for devs to add assist systems for the demos to prevent too many mistakes from being made, so the block system may not be as safe as it looks. It probably is, but the game is still a fair amount of time away, so there is still some hope to add it to the game.

Although I personally 100% agree, it should absolutely win game of the year, I feel like The Last Us part II will get it because it’s “Progressive” and the awards shows will just do it to show “How supportive they are” in a fake move that’ll piss everyone off
Juan Duron the only 10/10 thing in there is locations design. Even 20/10 hats down. But the rest? Voice over maybe. Fighting is exactly the same as 7 years ago. “We made combat much more innovative and dynamic” lol right. Crawling and hiding in tall grass is innovation in 2020?! And it get’s boring af on day 2 already. Main story is 10/10? Any secondary quest in any ES is better written than this crap. At least there you have some choice in the matter. Overall this game is 7/10 at very best so stop the bs please.

I think the combat system can still be improved upon in terms of the animation - adding more weight to the strikes . Other than that I'm pretty happy with it too. Luckily there doesn't seem to be an announcement date yet so there are still a lot of polishing to do. I suspect a 2019 release for this :)
Let us just hope it will actually look like this when it comes out. Seen so many "gameplay" demos like this that looks amazing and then the game comes out and it has had a major downgrade.
2 years later. Ghost of Tsushima gives proof that a non-Japanese-major team still can create an open world that filled with the beauty of Japanese culture. Everything in this game is so ... beautiful. This is my GOT 2020 so far.
That is exactly the type of samurai game I've been waiting for. No supernatural stuff, no cheesy demons (I'm looking at you, Onimusha), no one guy battles fifty guys at once. Just a realistic, stylish, down-to-earth samurai game. And it looks beautiful. Game of the show.
Oi, Onimusha's great for what it was and why not show off some of the amazing japanese supernatural stuff. But I will concede to you- considering we haven't really had *that many* great historical japanese Samurai/Ronin(?) games, keep em coming :D
Don't get me wrong, Onimusha was a great game and had a ton of cool demon stuff, but it was more on the cheesier side in my opinion. I'm just glad that Ghost of Tsushima is very serious (at least it seems so) and more historical. :)
Right?! When Jin confronted those three Mongols, the first thing that went through my mind was how poetic the scene was with the blood red leaves dancing around them and how much alike warriors locked in battle and the leaves of the trees are in that they live their lives similarily ready to fall dead to the ground at a moment's notice... Similarily, during the duel between Jin and Masako, I reflected on how the red leaves scattered on the ground, given the context of their duel, seemed to symbolically represent the people of their land that had already fallen... All in all, considering all the poetic meaning I could read into something as simple as falling leaves, it's no wonder the samurai were such renaissance men, and Suckerpunch are really nailing that essence with this game.
Came back to see how different the game is from this demo. The way he readies his grappling hook in this demo is super cool. Kind of a shame they didn't keep that in. Also, haven't dismembered anyone yet. D:

This game won E3 for me, it looks absolutely amazing. Don't need a AC game in feudal Japan now as this is much better. Similar gameplay with much better combat and no stupid Assassins vs Templars story crap.

dope malone I'm not sure how that worked in GoW, but in Bushido Blade, your enemies could also die in one hit. If someone got hit in the arm, they couldn't use that arm anymore. A hit to the leg meant you had to slowly limp around. Brilliant game!
Interesting enough, at PlayStation Experience 2017 during Sucker Punch's panel they asked "Would you guys like if we gave you a Japanese dub option?" and of course the crowd responded with "Hell yes!" to which they said "Alright, noted". So it's definitely something I'd say they are considering if not already implementing it into the game.
I platinum the game the other day and this game is my game of the year forsure every aspect of it from exploring to the exillerating the combat i love it and too bad they change how the grapple hook is looks pretty dope

Looks quite good. Paper armor though, and that really doesn't sound like Mongol at all. I think the villains' VA knows no Mongolian because it really sounds like Mongolian spoken as if it's Indo-European language. More interested to this than to Nioh 2 or Sekiro , though.
Really great presentation of this game, its one of those games that you don't know you want until you see it. Really makes me wish the Sony show wasn't as disjointed as it was going into this.
Of course that business practice of Remasters has done wonders for many developers, look at GTA V... I say most of of 2017-2019 PS4 games will be re-released on PS5 native 4K/60fps.

Visually one of the most impressive games I have seen, atleast at E3.

Looks quite good. Paper armor though, and that really doesn't sound like Mongol at all. I think the villains' VA knows no Mongolian because it really sounds like Mongolian spoken as if it's Indo-European language. More interested to this than to Nioh 2 or Sekiro , though.

Of course that business practice of Remasters has done wonders for many developers, look at GTA V...
