Unfortunately it won’t...she died 😢 I got to about 6 workers and they all dropped dead. I haven’t had much success with them..I had another 2 queens die as well. I will try them again though one day.
@@NovoAnts aww! Thats such a shame! My first colony ever was Funnel Ants! I'm absolutely in love with the species! I raised that colony until around 50 workers and my grandparents fed them a poisoned Cockroach without my consent! It was sad and i still haven't beaten that amount of workers yet! Funnel Ants are just so awesome!
Wow you were doing well with her. Pity about the poisoned roach, same thing happened with a cricket for me and nearly wiped out my Camponotus Aeneopilosus colony.
Beautiful looking queen. A number of years ago, I was recording the inside of a bull ant nest with an endoscope camera. After filming, I got stung twice trying to remove ants from the equipment. There was some pain but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Of course different people react in different ways. The second sting was more painful than the first but it wasn't super painful. Pain lasted about 8 - 12 minutes and then I was fine. I have heard that some people have been in pain for hours and days after a bull ant sting. And a few have died due to an allergic reaction.
That would have been interesting, did you get good video? Yeah I’ve only been stung by a small species, lump and itch lasted a couple of days. I’ve been with people who got stung and their whole foot swelled up and was painful for days. Different people react different ways. Do you keep ants?
@@NovoAnts Yea the footage turned out quite interesting. It was my first time looking inside a bull ant nest. I liked seeing all these curvy tunnels and passageways. I uploaded the video to my channel a few years ago ua-cam.com/video/Lu3k5dnAhCk/v-deo.html. With regards to keeping ants, I found a lone bull ant walking around my home fairly recently. Obviously, she must have been foraging for food. Though it's a bit of a rare sight because I don't know of any bull ant nests around here. Unfortunately, there's a family member here who would prefer to do them harm. I didn't want that so I captured the worker. I plan to setup a proper enclosure with substrate and stones etc. I hope she won't be lonely without a colony. I gave her a piece of apple and she is obsessed with it.
@@NovoAnts Some years ago on a farm, I spent a lot of time observing a bull ant nest in the wild. There was a meat ant nest nearby and on many occasions, the meat ants would come over and harass the bull ants in their own nest and chase them around. Another thing I noticed on one or two occasions is that sometimes bull ants would banish members of their own colony. A bull ant would grab another bull ant and take it out of and away from the nest. And the ant being carried was fully alive and appeared to be in good health. I guess they would dump them somewhere some distance from the nest. On one of these occasions, a bull ant that was carrying another bull ant was intercepted and attacked by a meat ant. When this happened, the bull ant that was on foot loosened her grip on her captive. And the bull ant that was now free took her revenge immediately. Both bull ants were now locked into a ball stinging each other. It was crazy to watch!
Unfortunately not. She died. I have now banned the name Rosie as all of my queens named Rosie have died! 😢😂 I might get another Nigriceps but concentrating on current colonies
@@NovoAnts I know all too well the pain of Myrmecia eating their young. My fulvipes queen are the 2 larvae from her first batch that failed to spin proper cocoons. She now has 5 fresh eggs though which is good.
Yeah they are so nervous and eat the eggs or larvae. Hope your queen keeps the next batch. Try not to disturb her, I made that mistake to often with my Myrmecia.
Umm I’m not sure they have bull ants in England...I’m from Australia, Newcastle Australia. Sorry if you thought it was England. She certainly is nice...and scary 😰
@@NovoAnts oh i thought you lived in england because of the whole the queen of england video thing Lol and yes she is very scary would not want to have your foot stuck in a colony of these ants
Rosie is amazing... I think they would be an awesome species to keep. I wont lie, I would be nervous to keep them because of their sting but they are beautiful. Hey The name Rosie works good and sounds tough.. LOL I am hoping she produces and you end up with an awesome colony. I would love to see that. They are strange. I seen a construction worker in Australia broke ground on a construction site and found a large colony. Instead of just destroying them.. he took his time and brought the whole colony home and kept them in a giant enclosure. It was amazing. If I ever find that again I will share. Truly wonderful. Great Show as always and Hope Rosie produces ..
Thanks for your kind comments. Rosie will stick, it’s growing on me. Fingers crossed she produces soon and I can show a colony off. Hope everyone likes the name of the next queen...😰😖😂
Not sure if its gon help, but I've seen Tetraponeras were kept in a special way, maybe wanna try the same method? Use a cardboard to cut out small circular disks to break the test tube into 2-3 sections, that might make a more humid chamber for her and it might make her feel safer. Since you've had her for a year now, no harm trying :D Hope to hear great news from ye :D I'm dont have the luxury of enjoying these beautiful ladies as I live in Singapore. Hope in the future I'd get the chance to move the land down under~
Thank you very much for the tips. I might try that out...I think humidity increase would be good, since it’s winter here I might keep her warm and inside to help progress. Bull ants are amazing and we are blessed in Australia to have them. I hope you get to keep them in the future. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 😃
I use a drill but you could use some scissors and work them around. Be careful though, sharp edges etc...also don’t put to much pressure on the lid or you might crack it
I hope she lays for you. I am about to take on a rhytidoponera aspera queen who also hasnt laid but maybe the change in climate might change things for her. I can only hope as id love to have a colony of these
I just got my first colony of lasius niger!! I am wondering, what should I feed them. So far they have 12 workers. I have given them honey, is their any advice u could give me?
Like Jonathan said, give them a supply of carbs, I prefer sugar water (50/50) mix. Then provide protein. Perhaps for a smaller colony try a meal worm cut in half. I would give them protein maybe once or twice a week though, just see how they go with it and if they consume it fast then supply more. The colony will benefit from it. 😃
Yeah different species different rates but just gauge on how much they eat. If they take it they need it. It will speed them up in brood development of its needed. You can stunt the grow of a colony by depriving food
Nice video! Also, you are an ant expert, right? Well, I caught a small colony of Anochetus and I’ve tried to give them pre killed crickets but they don’t want it and if they hunted it, it may hurt them. What can I do?
Thanks. Expert 🤔 not sure about that. I’m not familiar with Anochetus but if they don’t take crickets maybe try something different like meal worms, woodies or meat of some sort. You could also try a half dead cricket, bit nasty but gives them something to work for and hopefully wouldn’t hurt the ants. Hope that helps a bit.
Ok cool. Did you cut the meal worm in half? Some species can’t get through the hard shell. Maybe try turkey meat...ants seem to like it. Also, you could try a bit of broken up almond or walnut.
Yeah it is strange, they get nervous easily and eat them. Most of my bull ants eat their first batch of eggs. I’m trying not to disturb them now so they lay again. 😃

@@NovoAnts No, unfortunately not yet, this is my first Myrmecia species. But there is always a first time and icb would like to enlarge my experience area💪😉 A question, do you know if whom the colony of junk queens and men can be paired with?
Rosie isn't bad, after all, every rose has its thorn.
Haha that sounds like a good excuse!
Just like every cowboy sings a sad, sad song.
I had the pleasure of stumbling through one of their nests wile dry-firefighting last summer, I was stung 4 times, once in the back of the neck.
Ouch that’s a killer...I haven’t had the pleasure but I’m not looking forward it. 😖
