This has got to be the best sounding snare drum I have ever heard.
I have an older generation 8 inch free floater with a maple shell. I just purchased an aluminum shell for it and the drum sounds amazing! Best of both worlds!
If I may ask where did you get the shell? I too have an 8x14 FF maple but want to get an aluminum shell for it
Ordered this bad boy about a month ago. It's definitely got that "it" sound I want
**REVIEW & UPDATE**
This is my go to snare for everything. I own about 7 or 8 snare drums (all different shells and sizes) and I found that no matter what genre im playing, I can always rely on this one. This is what makes Pearl one of my favourite drum companies
Now this is a great snare drum! Worth every penny.
But trying to go into the rabbit hole of metal shell snares is blowing my mind. 6.5x14 black beauty brass is probobly one of the ultimate gold standards. Steel and aluminum sound great, but I find myself gravitating toward the darker metals like Brass, and then bell brass (which is stupidly expensive). Then you have Copper, which from what I've heard sounds like a warmer softer brass? I think a birch snare sounds pretty damn perfect on recording for funk.
Anyway, I love snares
sounds great, I guess I`m gonna need a 14x8 snare in my arsenal now!
Omg this is so Bonham sounding I know he played Ludwig
Oh man this is tempting... $600, but damn, that snare could be great for funk, metal... well really, anything.
ahem, it's task specific.
+Jelley Peanuts
by description, sure. Doesn't mean it wouldn't work well in different scenarios.
And with the free floaters you can buy different shells and just swap them out if you wanted wood/brass etc
It's actually $1K in Canada
Damn! The free floating series must be (according to me) the best sounding snares in the world! Even this deep metal core snare (I generally don’t like snares made on a metal core) sounds damn good! 💪🏻
I kinda want a 15x8 version...
A bit too airy and lacking in a sharp attack for my liking, is it the longer than average depth that gives it that sound? If so, I think Aluminium snares are better suited to a 6.5 or shorter depth. Others seem to love it though so each to their own.
Why is it called "task-specific"?
Just gonna toss in my 2 cents: The LOWER tuning works best for this drum. Even lower than they first had it. If you want a higher pitched snare, then get a 5 X14 or a 5 X 13 or a 4 X 14...This drum is versatile, yes...but...the lower tuning gives it more of a BIG sound and fatter sound. Kudos to Pearl, though. This is nice. Could cover a wide range of music with it.
roadrocket7 I thought it sounded great in the high range
Higher tuned deep snares gives you crack like a shallower snare but retains the body that can’t be found in shallower drums so...
I do own this snare. I totally agree. I Keep it in the medium tuning for my personal taste, but having it low its amazing
Na keep the deep and high pitch
"Task specific?"
All I know is that aluminum is the perfect grindcore/brutal death metal snare drum. Crank it up high for those super trashy ringy blast beats.
Defeated Sanity's drummer uses a 5.5x14 aluminum. Maybe someone cares lol
This anon does. Supras are highly sought after for reggae too, that rimclick sounds great on them.
I don't understand why floating shells aren't industry standard (they're not a new thing either, single-tuning shells go way back). Sleishmann or Zebra kits for example sounds amazing.
It’s good to see the brutal side of drumming represented here my dude! One of my fave drummers with such a sick snare tone.
I see that fast metal players tend to prefer short snares, 5,5 or 5" or even piccolos.
