I’m wanting a 14” x 8” snare, and Sonor is on my list of options, so I’m glad I stumbled on this vid. Great demo and great playing, thanks for all the hard work and time it takes to make these reviews.
@@James-Chapman-Drums I love Sonors. Started my affair in 1988 when I bought a 1975 smoke acrylic 13/14/16/18/24 at a St Louis MO pawnshop for $300! Now I own a 1975 13/14/15/16/18/22 & 24, with 2 Ferromanganese snares (5.75 & 6.5) that I got for $1000 three years ago.
@@malcolmbliss777 love it! I had a 1975 phonic in 13,14,18,22. They were absolute cannons! Now I have the Horst link signatures which are essentially the same shells but in 10,12,13,16,22. I do have a D-505 14x5.75 ferro snare though and that’s probably my most used snare. I’ve been wanting one of the smoke acrylics for ages!
@@James-Chapman-Drums The Horst Link? Niiiiice! You don’t see those used very often. Really wish they still made the slotted tension rods. I’m a huge fan!
Really Comprehensive Demo of this beautiful 8" it got me intrigued the second it was shown on various Videos. And you just made it absolutely clear how versatile this Instrument is. Great Job, James.
Thank you for this great review, it's definately on the top of my wantlist for the moment. I like that it's thicker than most of the competition at this price, seems very much suited for heavy metal playing 🤘.
Thanks for the kind words. I think Sonor’s videos are absolutely awesome but I’m glad that people like mine too! I know that Sonor appreciate the videos I do, but it is hugely helpful when people like yourself take the time to put such a positive comment on my videos. Thanks for watching!
WOW!!! What a snare review James!!! Thanks for the in-depth knowledge as well! You inspired me so much, that I went out the same day I found your video and bought this exact snare to couple with my DW Collectors Cherry Mahogany set and WOW this SONOR Kompressor 14x8 takes it up a notch!!! THIS snare sounded amazing right out of the box!!! I want to say this is best review I've seen for any drum. Keep it coming James! We guys and gals really appreciate your hard work showing all of the features to this beauty!
I’ve been really into 14x8 drums lately. I have a couple steel; and also a brass 14x8. Haven’t seen any aluminum’s. This drum definitely had me intrigued and this video sold me on it. Ordered one today because of it. Thanks for the great video.
Hey James! First off I want to say thank you for your awesome videos! I appreciate your charisma and attention to detail in your passion. Youve inspired me to purchase several things including my Darwin FTW’s. This video completely sold me on this 14 x 8 aluminum, (aluminium), so I bought one. I absolutely love it!! The versatility is unmatched. You should give it a try with Diecast hoops…. Wow!
Thanks! It’s great to hear that you enjoy the videos and they’re helped you with picking your gear! The Darwin pedals are the very best out there so you made a great decision with those! This snare has quickly become a favourite of mine. Such a versatile but still big sounding drum. I did actually try it with some Diecast and hella hoops and I quite like it with the triple flanged, but I definitely think thats a video worth making for people to hear the difference too! Thanks again for the kind words and enjoy your new snare!
i discoered your channel because of Stagg cymbals and i bought one back them. Nice to see that you are still around with reviews and stuff. Very nice, not often with see a aluminum 14x8
Great Review James! This snare sounds great throughout the tuning range. Personally, I prefer Sonor over all others, but I still enjoy many other Drum Maker's Drums. I'd like to have the Aluminum Kompressor in 13x7.... that's just me. Thanks and Blessings James! New subscriber.
Great video! Thank you very much for this! I like the snare in your video in all tunings. Interestingly, I don't like the drum in any other video. In most of the videos the reso head is clearly too soft. Do you have the reso head properly tight? Do you use other snare wires? Do you always have all tuning screws at the same tuning or do you tune according to the Masshoff method? :)
Thanks! The 5.75 looks great too! I have a D505 which I thought might be too similar so I went for the 8. If you don’t have a deep metal shell you should definitely try one I’d these out if you get a chance. Thanks for watching!
@@James-Chapman-Drums thanks again for doing this review, it’s one of the best I’ve seen. Great playing and seeing the drum in context makes such a difference. My mate in New Zealand has ordered the 8 and he’s stoked having seen your work.
Hey my friend I just found your your UA-cam site you're talkin about Darwin pedals and now I found one of your videos on sonar snare drums what's your most go to snare drum do you use
Hey! It's tough story as I really di use them all regularly. The go-to snare that I've used the most is probably the 14x5.75 D505 Phonic snare drum, or the 14x5 Artist brass. But lately I have been using the 14x8 aluminium Kompressor the most.
@@James-Chapman-Drums well that's interesting I come across the company called drum supply in Tennessee United States they have a copper snare I'm looking to buy it's a company that provides build your own snare they drill the holes in the in the shell and provide you all the the hardware so you can put it together yourself you should check them out they make some pretty decent snares granite or not sonar like the but it's interesting I noticed you use Istanbul cymbals I've been looking into getting Zultan cymbols where did you come across them Darwin pedals anyway I've been looking at a Dixon precision coil pedal where did come across darwins petals are pretty killer man I like the construction they look like they're built pretty good
I believe the Kompressor drums are manufactured in Sonor's Chinese facility, but with a metal shell that doesn't make music difference as they aren't cutting bearing edges etc etc. The new Beech shell Kompressor is a German made beech shell, so it's only the assembly happening in China. Either way, these are fantastic drums that I use every bit as much as my German Sonor snares.
You do a great job demoing that drum. I'm impatient but all the details were relevant/of interest. Yes, after looking up in my area (Ca.usa) it's a great price. I play a brass free-float that's pretty great and similar in timbre, but that aluminum has a tone that I think I WANT good stuff Ps.. did you do any post eq? I was surprised to not hear pingy overtones
Thanks! There was no eq during the examples where it was drums only. During the playing with the songs there was a small amount of eq, but not much. It’s a great sounding drum! It’s certainly not dead and there are plenty of overtones, but nothing pingy and annoying.
@@banditY2K amazing kits! The maple finish is fantastic too! I think its one of Sonor’s best kits. The thin birch is really resonant and they have a very pure tone. If you have a look through my videos from 2015 onwards then there will be loads more with lots more playing using this kit or at least parts of this kit! Enjoy your new drums!
It’s the same throw off that was found on the SQ2, Delite and Benny Greb and Steve Smith signature snares prior to them developing the dual glide. Looks like it’s small because the drum is so big. It’s fully metal and perfectly functional. It adjusts smoothly and stays put. The holes are also the same size as the dual glide so you could replace it with that if you want but this is one way Sonor have kept the cost of these down to make them more accessible for people.
Now that's how you demo a snare - Well-done!
Thanks! I’ll be demoing the 13x7 brass soon as well as some other Sonor snares
