These Game Controllers Suck

- I apologize for this video but I needed something because the Minecraft video isn't done yet so I rushed to make this. Anyways in this video I talk about a few game controllers that somehow were made despite probably hundreds of thousands of dollars of research and development going in to them.

today in this video I look at video game controllers for consoles like the Xbox Series X, Playstation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, and as the thumbnail would suggest, the Sega Dreamcast. On these systems, you can play games like Fortnite, Among Us, Minecraft 1.16, and more. Hopefully you enjoy this video, because the next video I'll be putting out will be going over Minecraft and how long it's current popularity will last. I assume this is a question many people have, especially since some of the current fastest growing creators on the website (Dream, Sapnap, GeorgeNotFound, TommyInnit, Tubbo, Ranboo, Ph1lza, etc.) are Minecraft creators. Hopefully you enjoy this video, and my next. minecraft - Ігри

@@WildSpartanz why hello there
@@WildSpartanz lmao sad
Worth noting: the duke was the size it was because the engineers had already decided on a PCB was big (they didn't think to break it into two with a ribbon cable), so the industrial design was just told ”the controller needs to fit this PCB” and she did what she could within those limitations. Given those constraints I think the design work for it is outright impressive.
2 words: Joycon Drift
Tokyo drift lol
I'll do you one better. Playing with a single joycon that has drift
Carmageddon 1 controls lol
(Carmageddon, even if the game is fun, has terrible controls.)
@Banana Boi ant controller
Fixable by a 1mm wide square of cardboard!
(That’s not a joke btw)
As much as I loved the dreamcast controller I still can't disagree with how uncomfortable it is. The poor thing was begging for a right stick.
The best controller is obviously when sega smacked 2 keyboards on a typing of the dead machine
Also don't forget the *STEEL BATTALION* set for the original xbox. I miss when AAA studios made crazy shit like this. 😭
@@Abel-Alvarez Dont forget the boomerang
Gamecube controller is great. Probably the most significant contribution Nintendo made to controllers. Just needs an extra z button and R3/L3 inputs. I love the pro-controller too but it's really just Nintendo's take on the xbox controller.
I hate the button layout on the right so much, and the c-stixk is ass. Other than that it's a fine controller.
I think the most significant contribution Nintendo made to controllers was the D-Pad and shoulder buttons.
Also button naming conventions they started ABXY since misted sued ABC or a phone layout
@@Krem_Krem don't forget the analog joystick, motion controls and touchscreen
The Switch ProCon is amazing. Although it needs analog triggers. Which is why I bought a series X con for my PC. Still getting used to the backwards A B X Y layout on the xbox.
Even a sony controller origibally has Cricle as select and X as back. It's backwards in the west tho.
The A and X on the mainstream consoles (Xbox and PS west) are over used. When I played Witcher 3 on my Xbox con, the A button was the EVERYTHING button. On Switch, B is jump/sprint and A is the action/select button
Switch perfectlybalances the Select/action button and the usual Jump button
Most of my friends old Xbox 360 andPS3 cobtrolles had mushy A and X buttons lol
in its defence, the dreamcast controller isn't too bad even with its weird... shapes...
Yeah, it looks uncomfortable but it really isn't.
I really love it, the only thing i really think should have been different is that it should have been a little wider and less tall, but mainly i thinnk the triggers should have been up a little higher, it can be uncomfortable if you have to use the triggers in conjunction with the face buttons as the buttons are up high but the triggers are down low, other than that... the D-Pad could have been better. but it's so innovative it's hard to hate if you've actually used it for a while.
He admitted he hasn't used one
Seems like it would be very comfy with your middle fingers over the triggers, unlike every other controller I tried.
the worst part about it is the D-Pad, its so uncomfortable to play fighters with, too squishy
actually the dreamcast controller is surprisingly comfortable, the fact they had a notch for the controllers cord to go up does make it's downside more apparent. also the connect isn't that terrible, the games made for it are terrible, either with homebrew, or that one connect adventures game, it actually works really well.
can confirm i personally own a dreamcast and the only problem is that it only has one stick really
@@ginoschlegel6370 yeah I agree
i guess i’m just used to meh or bad d-pads then
Yes
Skill issue for stryxo
I love the N64 controller. IMO it's pretty comfortable to hold when you're holding it correctly, with the middle handle in your left hand for games that require the joystick, and the left handle in your left hand for games that require the d-pad(like Mischief Makers). I can't recall a game that uses both d-pad and joystick simultaneously, so I think developers had the controller layout in mind when developing for it. It's definitely confusing, though, so I see why people would think holding the left handle and reaching over to use the joystick is the way to use it. As much as I like it, it is bizarre.
Also when I got my XBox original, I got the second revision controller with it so I never had to deal with the Duke. That thing must feel really uncomfortable.
the disign defimitly has it's ups. what I like about it is that there is no uncomfortable way to hold it, because on modern controllers the dpad is often hard to use because you have to extend your thumb in a uncomfortable way for an extended period of time if you're useing the dpad for movement. but wile I'm use the n64 controller I have two spterate places for my hand to rest for the anologe stick and dpad respectively.
Yeah I honestly thought the n64 controller was awful because it looked so weird, then I used it and I was like, pretty sexy ngl
Yeah the 64 controller was meant to be a versatile controller for different types of games. In hindsight though no one ever really used it in unique ways and you usually just held the middle and left prong all the time.
Me too
i kinda do not agree with you, a controller shouldn't have multiple ways to being held, every button should be accessible in as much scenarios as possible, when i first held the controller, i was like 5 and didn't understand how to use it, even after like 2 hours i still couldn't figure it out and then just gave up, but, to be fair, that was the only time i ever used it, so it might be parcially because of that that i think its awful
“Just by looking at images”
“How much hand pain *i’d get* from using it”
“Something as uncomfortable *looking* as the Dreamcast controller”
This is just speculation on my part but it doesn’t sound like this man has ever actually held a Dreamcast controller
I thought the same
Yeah he hasn't.
THE DREAMCAST CONTROLLER IS SO GOOD
As someone with big hands, I actually really like the duke controller. The only thing wrong with it are the black and white buttons, and I'm glad that we now have shoulder buttons instead.
I never minded the black and white buttons but bumpers are still better by miles.
The black and white buttons at the very least are in a somewhat sensible location in the Duke. For the S controller they're placed down where it's super uncomfortable to get to.
That said I have seen an S styled third party controller that had bumper which mirrored the black and white buttons. Pretty interesting.
Those were mostly used for menus and chest codes I noticed as a kid lol
Even then the Pro controller has an issue with its D-Pad where it lacks what's called a central pivot. Press down on the middle portion of any Nintendo D-Pad and it should rock up, down, left or right. That indicates that the pivot is prominent enough that button presses aren't misread by the controller, but the D-Pad on the Pro Controller has such a bad central pivot that playing games with the D-Pad is an absolute nightmare.
This is the exact reason why I quit Tetris 99 before getting anywhere near good, my joycons are drift hell so those wouldn’t work either
This. I also have a similar but somehow worse issue with the xbox 360 controller.
I really hope this channel goes places, super under-rated.
YES
Any channel that hates Nintendo definitely does not deserve to go places. You should only become famous if you have something good to say. All he really does is shit on Nintendo.
@@NobaraGamezzz read the description
@@NobaraGamezzz I don't think you worded this the right way..
He shits on console companies a lot but, He shits on Nintendo the most.. I get that (I mean come on.. He literally said that the worst thing on the Gamecube controller is the weird button layout when it is one of the best layouts ever created.. The actual bad things about the GC control is it not having another Z button and the small d-pad)
Even tho I don't like the guy (obviously because of the Nintendo video.. It was filled with a lot of lies and I was disappointed with it) I still wish him well and hopefully better himself up
Edit: also it's obvious he is one of those "PC master race" freaks lol
Sorry sorry just had to say it
@@NobaraGamezzz Can you blame him? Nintendo is my favorite console company (even more so than *SEGA* and Playstation) but the truth is that their bullshit policies and bad PR is what needs to be brought up alot because it's true.
2:43 finally, *FINALLY* for once someone brought this up, I'm glad I wasn't the only one! 😅
damn I've never seen the og xbox controller before, i didn't expect it to be so goddamn thicc
1:12 I'm pretty sure that's a Xbox series X/S controller
whoops lmao, you're right. I don't think there are many differences between the two (i might be wrong) but yeah definitely used the wrong image there
@@Stryxo Only differences are the SX controller is slightly smaller, has that octagonal bowl d-pad thing instead of a straight up d-pad, and the share button in the middle. Imo they're interchangable unless you play fighting games where the d-pad matters a *lot*
Good stuff! But honestly the ps5 controller has my heart the most, as soon as I went back to ps4 for a bit all the issues became apparent with the size of it
Better than the duelshock trilogy
PS5 is definitely the best Sony controller by FAR. The dualshocks were awful, with the 4th one being the most tolerable..
Having played 6 hours of Apex on the dualshock 4 one day was a horrible experience. Having to hold the thumbstick forward SIDEWAYS and clicking it in a LOT is the most hand cramping experience ever. But it's still better than Dualshock3 when I no-lifed Destiny on it
But the symmetry of the sony cons will always make them the worst controllers on the market
The DualShock 2 is a d tier controller at best. I actually love switch cons but the pro is an easy a tier controller. The dual sense is pretty comfy too but the Omni d pad on the series controller feels amazing.
I'll definitely be here for your success. This is amazing content, keep it up :D
it's honestly really nice to start watching content from a growing creator. this is good stuff dude. 💜
1:00 thats Xbox series X controller, not Xbox one.
Yes i know they near identical, but still. You can tell the difference by different dpad and extra button in the middle on the series X controller.
i was looking through the comments to see if anyone noticed, thank god i wasn't the only one
Your videos are REALLY good and deserve way more recognition, keep up the good work!
If anything; I would say the opposite: Getting video game controller right in all the ways that matter is really HARD. We have only few established designs that are very afraid of change to not break what is not broken in name of fixing what ain't broken. I think often that current controllers and control schemes have been stuck for a while without innovation like adapting motion controls in conventional pads more. They've been in sony consoles for entirety of PS3 and PS4, continue to exist on PS5 yet only PC players have invented really innovative new control schemes to take advantage of this, and only on PC. Then there is also the whole "what controller for what job?" as people who play Smash Brothers, would probably most likely want to play it with a GameCube controller, while anything else they would most likely play with anything but a GameCube controller, and arcade sticks exist for games where their button layout and digital control stick just rule over the modern gamepad. Sega having a weird history because their controllers were mimicking arcade experience for a long while before they had to come up with solutions for home console exclusive designs.
The steam controller is forever destined to be forgotten it seems. I'm waiting for valve to make a SC2 and use the gyro from sony and the double back buttons from microsoft. Then we will truly have the "ultimate controller".
My least favorite controller I've used is probably the Atari 2600 buttplu- ER, I MEAN, joystick. It's iconic, yes, but it's also super stiff and not at all ergonomic. How the hell did anyone hold that thing in the 70's/80's and think it was okay!? If you're playing Atari on original hardware, just use a Genesis controller or some other 3rd party option. I personally use a Hyperkin Ranger, it doubles as a paddle controller and it's pretty good 👍
Oh man, I remember my mom buying an Xbox 360 just for the Kinect
This is a great video! I look forward to the Minecraft video!
Unpopular opinion: the Wii U GamePad is the most comfortable controller I have ever used.
Pretty good video overall! You made some pretty logical points.
(*Okay, but I need to music in this video, it sounds waay to familiar.*)
You should make a dog controller and sell it as merch. It would be the highest selling controller in the world
This chanel is bloody brilliant! To the point, no time waisted.
Amazing work
Glad to say I was subscribed to a UA-camr before he was really popular and when he was under 10k! 😁
I like the use of classic game room footage. Miss that channel
I miss it too. I felt crazy being able to recognize that from so long ago.
A big factor for me when it come to controllers isn't just the comfort; it's the features. Gyro sensors, rumble motors, audio jacks, back-paddles, analog triggers, a proper d-pad (PS Vita's is the best), tall stick options, touchpads (steam controller-like), turbo buttons/macros, USB-C cable support, multi-input for connecting to different consoles, and a repairable design. Obviously a controller with all of these things (module style) plus great build quality, a comfortable feel, and a case, would be the most incredible--expensive--controller in the world, in my opinion.
The Kinect was actually used in a lot of practical applications surprisingly, it was quite successful on that front
I’d love to see ya do this, but for earlier controllers.
WHAT THATS SO MUCH WORK FOR SO LITTLE VIEWS YOUR SO UNDERATED
Yo, Stryxo, I love your content! Is honestly really amazing! But I have a question, whats that site you use, for your scripting
The GC controller is up there for my top 3 best controllers ever alongside dualshock 3 and the sega saturn controller that had an analog stick
I didnt think the dreamcast controller was uncomfortable at all. My main issue was the cord coming out of the bottom or playing a FPS that made me use the face buttons to move and the left analog to turn. Brains used to movement on the left stick so it hurts to play like that.
I remember those N64 controllers, when I was a kid I thought you needed to have 3 hands to use it properly. Even looking at it today, the 3 handles still seems like a bizarre design choice. The OG Xbox controller was big and clunky but at least you can grasp (lol) how to use it just by looking at it
Stryxo is like Scott the woz without the comedy
it's not like I say he monotonous
he's kind of guy I needed
I agree I find Scott's comedy to be annoying so I'd prefer someone without it
those kinect games were bangers though
My favourite controller has to be the Wii U Pro Controller. I just love everything about the layout and the battery never dies.
I have a dreamcast and I love the controller design
To me it's really comfy and easy to use. Did a 10 hour session with that thing without having to put down the controller at all really
Also the vmu is the best thing ever i love seeing my chao run around in my vmu
The one thing I don't like about the Xbox One controller is that the light behind the home button is so bright. You can't turn the brightness of it down or change the color of it, and it's very easy to shine it in your face
Underrated is the N64 controller. People meme about it but its design is actually quite sound and designed to work for both 3D environments with the analog stick and most precise inputs for more 2D games with the D pad. Only thing bad about it was button mushiness after too much use and the analog stick was poor for shooters.
The Business side of the Xbox Kinect is actually one of the few good things about it because it failed it became a really cheap 3D camera witch is actually useful for heaps of stuff for small things
Am I weird for thinking that The Duke and the Dreamcast controller look kinda comfy? Is it just me?
The duke *was* comfy if you had big hands. I remember being disappointed that the S was replacing it back in the day, and I was just a teenager (granted, with piano hands).
That sonic unleashed in the background 🔥🔥
Haven’t watched the video but Xbox 360 controllers are one of if not the best controller
Ok he did mention it good
I personally find the Xbox controllers too big (all of them) and can only play on my 360 for 1 or 2 hours without getting hand cramps, but I know I just have smaller hands than most people. I always find it weird for a little bit when people say the dual-shock or sense is too small
Okay, the duke controller was uncomfortable but the S controller fixed most of the duke controller problem
Ur videos are really good
Thank you!
“The Duke” still reminds me of when I was little and begged my older cousins to let me play their Xbox, only to be handed this monstrosity and think that it’s too complex, lol.
GameCube button layout was goated
I saw the Thumbnail and got Triggered
This video is just stryx bullying the dreamcast controller
Personally loved the dreamcast controller. Just loved the way it sat in my and and still sits in my hand since I still use my dreamcast. Only gripe is that it needed another analogue stick
Honesly he is a bit harsh its a early 3d controller they didn't really know how useful 2 analog sticks would be in the futures
@@crossdaboss8914 Exactly! The Dreamcast was effectively a proof of concept that came out great all things considering. It wasn't a successful console but a successful concept. As you said it was a pioneer
@@sircampbelltenson7297 dreamcast had alot of features found in most modern consoles like built in internet connectivity online multiplayer and even DLC
The biggest problem with the Dreamcast controller wasn't that it didn't have a second stick (back then, the Sony DualShocks were the only controllers with 2 sticks; and they came late in the PS1's life), it was that the analog stick was way too high up on the face of the controller and it didn't have some kind of silicone/rubber cap to cover the head. You'd have to reach your thumb way up on the controller only to have it rest on this hard, slippery, plastic surface whose edge would dig into your skin because they didn't round off the sides of the analog stick head. I got some third party thumb stick covers for my Dreamcast controllers and it has made a world of a difference in regards to comfort after so many years of playing the Dreamcast (claw grip aside). Still love that controller even if it was a precursor to the infamous Xbox Duke controller.
Incredible channel !
The GC control layout is like that since in most nintendo games you press one button for most of the time, and the other three ocacionally.
Nahh I LOVE the Duke. One of my all time favorites.
yo this was made on my birthday :) thank you
You can thank Retro Fighters for producing redesigns of these flawed retro game controllers. The Brawler64 became my go-to Smash controller after years with the OEM controllers I had since 1999.
*Chuckles in rarely ever uses console controllers*
You really called the dualshock controller weird
Ur content is sooooooooo good u deserve a lot more subs.
the gamecube controller is perfect and that button layout makes a lot of sense when a game is proberly mapped to it, the idea is your main button for interaction is the largest with the other buttons around that one to give the right distance between them. the only negative thing I can think of is the z button only being on one side and should've had a ZL and ZR
What was SEGA thinking with the dreamcast controller lmao
about time we get a nsfw video game commentary
I guess I’m weird for love the 360 Kinect and liking to hold the wii mote side ways.
Wait... have you ever used a Dreamcast contoller? The way you worded it it sounds like you are only going by pictures.
I will not take this attack on the Dreamcast controller lying down
Yknow I kinda like the Wii mote while on its side maybe cause my hands are small or cause I use the Wii mote jacket thing.
the logitech wireless precision controller for the original xbox is unironically one of the best controllers i've held. i even bought a usb adapter just so i could use it on my pc.
Music in background?
song at the end?
To me the weirder thing about the Dreamcast controller is that the analog Saturn controller, which is essentially an early version of the same concept, actually did a few things better. They could have avoided a few problems by just adding a second stick on the right and keeping their classic d-pad design.
Look up the Sega Saturn 3D Controller sometime. The Dreamcast controller was a big improvement over that tragedy.
It's kind of a bummer that the Dreamcast controller didn't have 6 face buttons like the Saturn 3D Control Pad did...
The heaviest and largest controller, the most cutting hand's cross key, and the fewest buttons
I love the dreamcast controller if you haven't tried it which it sounded like it in the video it is perfectly fine except it doesn't have a second stick
Actually watched this video while playing Bowser's Fury on a Dualsense lmao
It feels really good, highly recommend. I'm used to an Xbox One S controller, and it feels natural. Very good controller, and the rumble is neat.
What are your thoughts about that one Sega Saturn controller with the joystick? I always thought it would be kinda weird, cause it's a puck shape with some grips.
Edit: Typos, cause I have sausage fingers
Back in 2011, I actually WANTED an Xbox 360 just for Kinect for the same reason fitness aficionados wanted a Wii (in which my family DID have at the time), but now seeing this makes me even MORE glad I did not actually get it!
I'm gonna be honest, VF3 and DOA2 are the only other Dreamcast games I've played
At least the dreamcast controller uses hall effect sensors for the joystick without mechanical parts giving it basically an unlimited life
The 64 controller is really comfortable what are you taking about
I actually sorta liked the kinect. The GameCube controller is my favorite. I think the NES and genesis controllers are kinda weird though.
What the cons doin?
0:24 stryxo is sayori from ddlc confirmed
The gamecube controller is the god controller in my opinion it is so comfortable to hold/use and the buttons are surprisingly really good considering the odd X Y A B layout. Not sure if you know this but the gamecube style switch controller with the USB you can use on a ps3 and it works well the only button that you can't use is the home on the switch controller but everything else functions. Be sure to have an actual ps3 controller to change games check messages ect.
the game cube controller has a great front button layout, the A button is what you use the most so all the other buttons just orbit around it, and it works really well for the games designed with it in mind.
1:39 The duke
1:32 AMOGUS CONTROLER
Valve index controllers are like $500 aud and the drift is really bad and they break easily but the finger tracking is cool
My main issue with the joycons is it has no handles so I'm holding this heavy slab and all I want to do is die
I don’t actually have much of a problem with the Dreamcast controller personally, even if I do have pretty big hands lol
In terms of Sega controllers, the Dreamcast controller could have been better, though I think the reason why it's comfortable for me is because I have smaller than average hands. It's why the Sega Genesis 6 button controller is my go-to controller for anything that just needs 1 d-pad and a buncha buttons.
The Sega Dreamcast Controller was so close to being amazing, but instead of using a rubber stick they stuck with plastic, making someone's thumb ache instead of being good. Another thing that you didn't mention is that almost every Sega controller from the model 2 genesis forward had at least 6 buttons for the face, which combined with Sega unique d-pad, made it one of the best controllers for fighting games. (besides a full on arcade stick ofc) Another final side note is that the wire comes out of the bottom of the controller
0:23
I don't see Minecraft there.
SAYORI'S POE-!!!!!!!!
Fun fact, plenty of hospital scanners use the Kinect as a camera to watch only. Why? God knows, a webcam would work, but they use the Kinect instead
You are right with the Xbox Original Controller,I don't know how the hell I used it when I haved likw 7 Years
