Led Zeppelin disbanded after the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980. This was a one-off concert in December 2007 honoring their deceased mentor Ahmet Ertegun (and besides their notorious Live Aid-Performance their one and only gig together as Led Zeppelin). Many fans hoped on a Reunion-Tour after that succesful concert but hopes were not fulfilled.
So - yes, many fans experienced Led Zeppelin live for the first time. On drums, by the way, Jason Bonham - son of John Bonham.
You've seen him playing Stairway to Heaven with Ann and Nancy Wilson at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012

Jason has said that Robert, Jimmy, and John Paul, are his three uncles who were always there for him after his father died. Robert wrote this epic song when the group was in Morocco. It was enjoyable watching Jimmy giving Edge (U2) and Jack White a tutorial on how the music came into existence, including the riff that drives the entire song. This is saw talent. No auto tuning, overdubbing, or fancy doohickeys on the computer, but Robert’s incredible vocals and power.

For historical context, this is considered one of the true crowning achievements of rock. If you really dive deep into this track, you will understand the complex arrangements by John Paul Jones, the different time signatures, and the complexity in the guitar playing. This was truly a monumental moment in rick history. And of course Robert Plant's vocals are just off the charts incredible.

There is something that is very "base" about a good rock performance. This is one of them. Don't tell me these guys didn't rock your pants off! From the very first note to the very last - everything was deliberate, every note has intent, with the sole purpose of rocking everyone's ass off. What a performance. This is the concert where Tommy Lee said if you close your eyes and listen, you can hear John Bonham coming through his son's playing. Amazing!!

  • @johnpbh

So many things about this performance are epic... One off reunion concert in aid of Ahmet Ertegun... The way John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham look at each other and keep the back line tight just like John Paul Jones and Jasons dad John did back in the day.... Jimmy being master of the understated... lol... and Robert, f..k, what a voice at 59 years old...!!! I've seen them live in a 3,000 seater in Glasgow in 1973 and can still remember the ringing in my ears. And this version of the song make my eyes a little damp when I realise just how lucky I was to have grown up on the '60's and '70's. Everything after stands on the shoulders of so many giants. WHO COULD PLAY AND SING LIVE..... Keep on Rocking

John Paul Jones the master , if you watch closely he is planning the base line with his foot pedals thru the keyboards , in other songs he reverses this plays the base line with the guitar and the keyboard lines thru his foot pedals.

So, I've seen zeppelin live quite a few times and am very grateful for that. Was nearly impossible to get tickets to this show the band had not played together in 20 years and this was a show for ahmet ertegun, the legendary cofounder of Atlantic records and a great friend to the band. ''That guy'' on drums is Jason Bonham, the son of the legendary John Bonham, playing on his dad's drum kit. I believe, and it's only my opinion, this was one of the greatest concerts they ever performed. Over 20 million people attempted to get tickets.

Something to remember when watching this song. The band themselves always considered this their opus. Both Plant and Page have commented how much it scared them when it came together, it was just so good. And the keyboard player (John Paul Jones) is playing the grinding base line with his feet while doing everything else. And it has no keyboard or guitar solo in it.

Their older original lives sound & look great too, just as great audio & visual. LZ always played with passion, they love what they do. I highly suggest you watch an old version, with John Bonham on the drums. This was the song the band was most proud of. The lyrics were written while Plant & Page were driving through the Sahara Desert, the were going to Morocco, a place Plant still loves & visits to this day.

Puff Daddy, with Jimmy Page playing guitar on the track, used this riff in the song “Come With Me” which was from the “Godzilla” movie with Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno.

They did a fantastic job at this concert. Hard to recreate their 1975 era concerts but really well done. Check out Earls Court 1975 for this and In My Time of Dying. Legendary.

JPJ, so underrated. 2 keyboards and his feet playing the bass lines on bass pedals at the same time making such a big sound even bigger. Great stuff.
