    I remember this performance in real time... I watched the whole series of Sing Off that year (2011?). Everyone knew these guys were something special from this. Scott was clearly the leader during the show, but their harmonies were just so superior. The Mitch/Kirsten/Scott connection was immediate, but the others quickly joined them. The judges were blown away every time. I've been a Pentaholic ever since.

      Scott and Mitch went to school together from age nine and were always involved in music and theater activities. Kirstie joined them a couple of years later. So the nucleus of the group was pretty solid by the time they got to the Sing Off.

    So many people miss Avi’s overtones completely, or think Kevin is adding effects. I love that you heard it so clearly and made a point to recognise the talent involved. I believe Mitch wasn’t very confident at this point either (he was bullied lots for his voice throughout school), and Kirstie definitely wasn’t. It’s really cool to see them grow in confidence and strength as the series continues.
    Loving your breakdowns 😊

      Thanks for watching! I just wish I could experience the overtones in person.. the mic takes away so much :(
      As for Mitch (and Kirstie) lacking confidence - it's completely understandable but, retrospectively, blows my mind😅Good thing the confidence came quickly! I have many other Sing Off performances yet to hear so hopefully can see the progression through them

    Sir, you are now my favorite reactor! Great comments I totally agree with. This is not a perfect prestation but had very specific endearing and impressive moments, enough to leave us wanting more. I guess we could say obvious raw talent. They really sang together for the first time the day before the tryout.
    I am not sure how long they had between making the tryout and starting the show. (One or two weeks????) They did have some time and all of them went to Scott's parents house.
    Another funny comment...Scott's parents asked Scott when they were practicing before filming when he got drums and he said he didn't it was just Kevin.

    I haven't heard these early performances in a long time. Nice trip down memory lane. I did hear this "live" (as it aired originally). Thinking back, I remember how enamored I was with them right away not knowing anything about them. I was a fan right from there.
    I'm happy you point out some of those little things like Kirstie's run etc. Hey they are young, they are human, and it is what it is. For my untrained ear, it helps me realize how good they were to start and how much better they are now. Quite amazing first performance on a grand stage considering how young they are and how little time they had together as a group before this performance. Sure the trio had a lot of time together, but they added to critical parts on short notice.

    Another spot on reaction, aside from the comment about Mitch and his moves! (lol) There is a Superfruit (Mitch & Scott's side project on YT that is no more, unfortunately) video where Mitch & Scott react to some Sing Off clips and you can feel and hear how cringe it is for them! Mitch is beyond uncomfortable with the moves they had to perform and with the simplistic harmonies they were choosing to execute! I really feel for them and their discomfort! They definitely learned a great deal from the Sing Off and made choices later on that distanced themselves from that part of their lives! A necessary evil, if you will! Thank you so much for each of your reactions to these amazing humans!

      @@SirHairless After seeing so many interviews with the group, it appears that Scott, whose idea it was to be on the Sing Off, was really wanting to just be seen as performers. They were very inexperienced on the whole. Each of them were such easy going people and considerate that they just wanted to do what was needed in order to be seen. At that point, I think Kevin had the most conviction about anything (abiding by his religious beliefs) and the group just wanted to make it work in any way possible. They are much stronger people now that they have gained so much experience with the business, but I still see that they try their hardest to be flexible and appeasing to whomever they work with. They are the best!

      I agree that the Superfruit reaction video to some of their performances is very interesting. I mean some of it is just them cringing at their outfits and their dancing (both somewhat controlled by the show's production team for all the competing groups) but they do talk about their performances too.

    Wow, going back to the very beginning! They did such a good job during the run of the show listening to the judges and absorbing every bit of constructive criticism and encouragement - about the music. Great reaction! I'm glad you watched this, since it is the first time they ever sang together as a group of 5 in public - except for their audition. I think the muddled bit toward the end of this video was because The Trio were very used to listening for timing cues from each other, but it took them 3 or 4 performances on the show to begin listen to Avi and Kevin, and to trust them to lead the beat. Once that happened, they were off to the races with no looking back. It would be fun to see your reaction to a few of these, including #5 Love Lockdown, #7 Born to be Wild (my favorite), #10 Let's Get it On and #12 Dog Days Are Over, where everyone got their first nation-wide Mitch slap!

    Thanks for this reaction to and explanation of this performance. Love the transcript! It really shows exactly who is doing what in that portion where the Mitch and Kirstie are sort of weaving around Scott's main notes.That ability to interweave and trade off parts is kind of trademark with those two.They're so good at it...and now that Kevin's vastly improved, he's sometimes a part of that mix. He was a newbie to singing when he first joined them and lacked confidence, but Avi especially helped him learn techniques and improve his singing...and now he occasionally outstrips both Kirstie and Mitch for the really high notes.

    I have seen lots reactors to PTX having difficulty with the copyright and most seem to solve it by blurring the video or putting text over the video, as it's apparently more often the video than the music which causes the problem. The alternative is stopping a lot. In this one you seem to have found a nice balance where you stop often enough not to have a problem with showing the video.

    • @SirHairless
      @SirHairless  6 місяців тому +7

      Thank you ☺ Presently, I'm trying to pause just several times throughout a performance (you'll see in upcoming vids) and give more feedback on what we've just watched/heard. It's more difficult as more to remember and I'm much more likely to forget to go back to certain things, but hopefully it appeases more people
      I'm finding the copyright scene very fickle - I uploaded a Christmas PTX reaction earlier which comes out next week, and it was blocked globally, period, due to copyright. I then adjusted the colours in the PTX vid slightly and tried again with a 2min section of the vid, and then it was blocked in Russia only, which is pretty standard. So I applied this adjustment to the whole vid, tried again and then it wasn't blocked anywhere?! Make it make sense!! I'm scared that will get blocked though before it gets made public 😅 Fingers crossed eh!

It was so funny that they put the camera on Kirstie. The judges never mentioned Avi doing this. although he did it twice here and also on one of their later SO performances, Dog Days are Over. I love 'BabyTonix' ... they were so young, fresh and eager to learn - they took in every single bit of constructive criticism the judges threw at them and applied it to their craft - I'm sure you have been told that Mitch, Kirstin and Scott grew up together in Texas and did a lot of choir and theatre - Avi and Kevin were brought in when this 'Sing Off' was aired. - Simply a magical union of talent that has continued to grow over time - Avi left in 2017 and Matt stepped in - nothing lost, but rather simply changed - the energy PTX brings to the stage is infectious and I am so glad you have found this 'Pentatonix train' to take this journey on - Loving your reactions -

    So impressed that you identified Avi's overtones right off the bat. Other commenters will probably tell you that the judges didn't notice them, or at least any comments they made did not make it to the video. I can't believe the judges weren't fully aware of what Avi was doing, since Ben Folds is pretty much a musical savant, and the others have decades of experience in the music industry. I suspect the producers didn't want to speak "over the heads" of the audience by delving into the complexity of overtone singing. Restricting Mitch's extraordinary range would be another example of how the show repeatedly catered to a very limited audience. I found the earliest performances of PTX were often quite "busy," as you said. I think they were all so talented and were trying to put all their skills together in every show, often to the detriment of the overall cohesion of the song. It took them a number of performances to back off that approach and highlight only one member's extraordinary skill at a time, plus a couple of signature surprise elements, just for fun. I find it astounding how quickly the group found its optimum pace and sound, and quite a privilege to be able to watch it happen. Terrific reaction, as always, Sir H.

      @SirHairless  6 місяців тому +1

      Yeah from the judges' comments I've watched, I'm willing to bet that the judges were told to keep their comments quite 'layman' and nothing too specialist. On the point of Mitch being restricted (from what I've heard in the comments), this just baffles me 🤯 Objectively, he's a ridiculously good singer with a unique voice so surely everyone witnessing that will appreciate it?!? Maybe I'm prone to bias....
      From the few Sing Off performances I've seen: Video Killed The Radio Star is my favourite, with Let's Get It On very close behind (I have a ratings video coming out soon, in which I rate every song I listened to that month, if you're interested in seeing my ratings for these). In Let's Get It On they demonstrated the 'backing off of the busy approach' you highlighted 👌Even with the choreography

      @@SirHairless The general consensus around Mitch is that the producers wanted to avoid any reference to LGBTQ status. With that stunning natural range of his, and even his normal speaking voice, Mitch can be mistaken for a female, and the leap from that to his sexual orientation was too close for their comfort. In addition, during the later episodes of the Sing Off, each of the surviving groups were invited to highlight a cause. Pentatonix chose The Trevor Project, an initiative the show labelled as a support group for "bullied youth." While not entirely inaccurate, The Trevor Project is better known as a support for LGBTQ youth, and a gay suicide prevention hotline, but all those references were cut. It is also worth noting that Scott was not out as gay in a public way until long after the Sing-Off, and the show portrayed him as the "hot lead singer" who generously shared his spotlight with the others. The producers had such a limited, reactionary vision for this inclusive and innovative group.

    Great reaction! Thank you! I agree with everything you said and am amazed at how much you picked up on in so short a time. *LOVE* the transcriptions! I could always *hear* what they're doing, but to see it scored is next level. I think they were probably coached with the choreography. "The trio" - with their childhood musical theater background - may have had a little more experience but are still pretty raw. And at the start of the competition, had a lot of rough edges to smooth out. It was probably easier for Kevin. Even being the least experienced and a classically trained cellist "moving" to his own beat helped the beat. And Mitch is simply a natural born performer, it's in his blood, he's comfortable and animated. *KUDOS* for picking up on Avi's overtone singing! He uses it three times during this competition and not one judge ever comments on it! There are several videos highlighting his skill and more live concert footage, too. During the first few years they only utilized Avi as a bass line and harmony. Every now and then he would solo a verse or two, but it had to be very limiting and boring for a classically trained basso-profundo headed to the L.A. Metropolitan Opera when he was sidetracked to this gig. I imagine this served as part of his decision to leave. The new bass, Matt, gets much more lead and solo time. While he has an amazing, beautiful voice - it in no way compares to Avi's basso-profundo. You will start noticing their progress within the first three or four episodes as they relax and learn to listen to and trust each other. No egos in play here. They take the judges comments and constructive criticism to heart and apply those lessons to each successive performance. Love following your journey of discovery and reliving, vicariously thru you, my own.

      Thanks for the comment, Sonja!
      We've discussed the overtones part in another comment on my vids, and as they're on the more technical side of things, the producers may not have wanted to include any mention of them in the show (if the judges did reference them at any point). Or, as you said, the judges just didn't mention them at all - again maybe for this same reason (they were told not to get too technical) - or they just didn't mention them but something in me doubts that!
      Stay tuned for more PTX - next reaction video out later today 🙌

    I am so glad you noticed Avi's overtones! You are the first reactor I have seen actually pick up on them, but based on your previous videos, I had a feeling you would! He also does them in their Dog Days performance, and I think they're utilized a little better in that one. As far as the end of the song where it "gets busy," I think this is a good example of their places for improvement but also potential. To me, I don't think this part sounds very cohesive and is a little jarring to listen to. But clearly they already had the desire to do interesting and risky things in their arrangements. They have learned how to do this busyness in a better way, I believe, in all these years.
    I also hadn't noticed how much they jumped around until watching this with you and I think it was mainly just nervous energy since it was their first performance on the show. As far as I can remember, they aren't nearly as bouncy in the later episodes, haha.
    Besides Kevin essentially starting from scratch, Kirstie has improved the most over the years. She has really come into her own and found her voice. Her confidence has also grown exponentially, and I think you can tell in these early performances that she's a little unsure.

      Thanks for this comment 👌 I'm looking forward to hearing Dog Days! And seeing their other Sing Off performances to (hopefully) see their confidence/tightness progression

    I would love to hear your thoughts on PTX doing carol of the bells live (I think it was 2021 Christmas under the stars). I need someone to explain to me how Mitch is breathing during this performance. Aside from that it's just a great example of how tight they are as a group.

      I've scheduled in their official Carol of the Bells for later this month, the live version may need to wait until next year (unless I physically cannot wait that long and end up caving and doing the live version too 😅)

      @SirHairless nobody would be mad if you did both 🤣 It would probably be an interesting comparison since they are close to 10 years apart and each have a different base singer.

    Now that you've heard their first performance it would be interesting to hear their latest performance to see just how sophisticated they've become. Kiss From a Rose live Vevo performance . You even get to hear/see Kevin cello boxing . Just dropped 13 days ago. Will blow your mind

      Thanks, Rory. This is one of my most recommended song by them, so it's on my list and I will get round to it faiirllyyyy soon (how soon though, I can't say right now!)
      I definitely am keen to explore more of their older stuff; to me it makes sense to see their progression for when I naturally get to their newer stuff. And whilst I'm not being strictly chronological, I'm trying to maintain a balance between reacting to recommendations and seeing PTX progress through time. We'll get there in the end 😅 Thanks for watching!

    If you want to see what Avi can do with overtones there is a clip of him singing 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' in overtones. If you Google it you can find it. It is pretty cool to hear.
    I think all five of them are pretty much aliens...

    Mitch was indeed asked to tone it down. But, remember, at this time neither Mitch nor Scott had revealed that they were gay. So I'm pretty sure the point here was to get every vote they could and not that they were trying to stay closeted.

      Crazy! I've said this in response to other comments about Masc Mitch - it just baffles me why he'd need to tone it down?! The people deserve to be Mitch-slapped 😂

    I’d be so interested for you to 8ncoude the judges comments, maybe after you do your own comments so as not to bias you. Ben Folds is particularly insightful and music nerdy

      Thanks - I've been asked this a couple of times and am a bit on the fence to be honest...I don't want to make these videos any longer, and I also don't think I should comment on the judges' comments 😅 And I imagine most Pentaholics will have watched the judges' comments before? It is definitely food for thought, though...I have quite a few more Sing Off PTX performances to hear and react to, so we'll see!
      Thanks for taking the time to watch and offer the feedback🙌

    I don't know if you watch the judges commentary or not on these ones, but it's sad that none of the judges even touch upon Avi's overtones in any of the performances of the Sing Off that had them.

    Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I do not remember hearing any of the judges speak of Avi's overtones.
    Something he is good at but does not use it in his solo work as I recall.
    Someone let me know if the Judges mentioned it.

    • @SirHairless
      @SirHairless  5 місяців тому

      I've received other comments saying the same thing - that the judges never mention the overtones.
      Perhaps it's due to them 1) missing it or 2) mentioning it but their mention not making the final TV cut

  • @rmac1042

      Some other comments have flagged this! Perhaps the judges were asked not to get too technical in their comments? Or, if they did mention the overtones, that section just wasn't aired?

  • @vinnibod2500
    @vinnibod2500 5 місяців тому

    Out of curiosity, what do you think about the judge's notes/reactions? I tend to agree with the judges that this is one of the weakest performances of PTX. At the same time, it feels like PTX was so far ahead of their time, that it was a major factor in the "weakness" of this performance. Mitch's first, and most awesome, Mitch slap is in Dog Days. Still, one of my favorite moments.

    • @SirHairless
      @SirHairless  5 місяців тому

      In general I agree with what they have to say! Would like to hear them get a bit more technical - it mostly seems to be Ben who is more detailed and targeted with his comments. I also wonder how much of their comments is not shown on TV!
