I just don’t understand why they’re implying that the Greeks had no ideas about the afterlife until Christianity came along??? He even mentioned Charon??? Clearly the afterlife wasn’t any more “mysterious” to the pre-Christian Greeks than the Christian ones, judging from all the mythology surrounding the River Styx, Hades, and everything else having to do with the underworld.
What you are saying is due to the basic function of science. Everything is researched and explained under a prevailing dogma. In addition, the longtime distance prevents, as well as the different interpretation of the data. In fact, what is happening is nothing but the transformation of the old religion into a new one. The ancient "pagan" Greeks believed in exactly what the Christians believed. Two simple examples:
1] The ancient Greeks built temples on hilltops and dedicated them to the god Helios [ΗΛΙΟΣ]. Today we are building chapels on the hills for the prophet Elijah [ΗΛΙΑΣ].
2] The story of the prophet Elijah from modern Greek "mythology" about the paddle. The prophet was looking for a place to be a monk. He was climbing the mountain and when he found someone who did not know what a paddle was, he built a church and stayed there. This story is the same as that of Odysseus in the Odyssey. When he killed the 12 suitors, to cleanse himself of the murder, he took a paddle and climbed the mountain. When he found someone who did not know what a paddle was he built an altar and sacrificed to the gods.

Ok, this particular series can stop now. They're more "teaser trailers" than actual documentaries. Flashy, filled with wild claims, and never diving into the subject beyond some light overviews. If the camera wasn't so wildly moving around the views would be nice.

Yes. Much of Greece is mountains. Very little of it, except for Thessaly which was northern greece, had farmable land. The large region known for where Sparta is at, is filled with majority mountains.

It's hilarious that some people think that Greece was the first "civilization" in Europe. There were societies all over the continent and the isles for centuries before that.
First of all do you know the difference between a community just being on a continet and a civilisation. A civilsation occurs when the members of that society evolve and trigger great improvements in the fields of agriculture, art and other aspects of life thus developing a culture.
The Minoans were the first Great European civilisation of that sort, followed by the Myceneans and Ancient Greeks. All took place in the Greek Islands.
