Too all. Por15 does work. I had a 1967 cougar roof was shot and I do mean shot. Thin as paper also pin holes.. I used por15 instructions to the tee is important. Not only did it work. But it hardened that metal like I put another sheet of metal on it. Had 4 years after in the sun.. never failed.
Here's a tip, when the por 15 is almost dry but still tacky dust it with primer. The primer will bond to it without interfering with drying.then spray full coat of primer when dry
POR works best when it is applied directly to rust as the name implies (Paint Over Rust). POR works by encapsulating the existing rust and preventing further exposure to moisture. That's why it is used more for frames and under the carriage. A better product would have been a rust converter to account for any microscopic rust left after sanding. The converter won't also be a thick, durable coating like POR that can be sanded again.
Interesting video, I guess it all depends on the final outcome and finish you want, but I think you will be sanding till your blue in the face to get that surface even close to flat again.Ive used some POR15 products on my truck frame, and for that its great. But I sprayed mine on and it came out super smooth. I would like to see the finish product when this is done, especially the part where you put those two pieces of trim back on. I cant see them fitting good, or at all with all that stuff in the channels where they go. But, in the end, its got to be better than when you started.
I put primer on it and put the trim back on with no problem. You are right, I will likely have to do some sanding when the time comes, but it is far better than the metal rusting through.
good job but to be definitively efficient, you should put grease everywhere. grease is the only thing very efficient against rust. put grease between metal and carpet, inside door, behind metallic bumper, under the vehicle, behind the repairs you can make (everywhere inside the body - hidden erea - instead of using paint), hollow areas (necessarily hidden, so no need to be aesthetic). For rear wings unreachable with a paintbrush, use an extender and poor old oil everywhere each year. Rust almost always comes from the inside and welds. Handyman Experience - 35 years. From france
I am not familiar with the entire prep, cleaner & POR product. I would guess the part of wiping the top down after sanding would have been a little boring but I though, the cleaner or prep looks gray, then it hit me, that must have the POR material itself you was brushing on? Duh! I have seen a couple of times but didn't know it even came in gray. Lean something all the time but thought I missed something. I hear it's tough as nails and a good choice to apply now for future repair as it would not be fun to replace the top's metal skin. Very interesting Ben! Thanks for sharing. DK, Omaha. Retired tech.
i hit that like button bud , i was wondering where did u get the products from? because im going to be doing my wifes rooftop on her suv 2008:tahoe thanks 👍
@@wrenchbenders LMAO I do a lot of pressure washing; one of the first things I learned is when you clean something with a pressure washer you end up cleaning everything around it also.
So far I have not. I plan on giving that truck some much needed love after I finish the duramax build and the International. It may get shoehorned in during some International stuff because I am impatient. Lol
I think you can paint it with what ever you want afterwards. I haven't painted it yet because I am still working on the duramax. I can let you know how it goes when I do paint it if you want.
Expensive and too much work. Soak Vinegar in some paper towels and put plastic over the paper towels for 8-10hrs in the shade. All the rust will wipe completely off. Primer, paint, clear coat and your done. You're welcome.

Honestly it still just like it did the day I put it on. I haven't added any more primer and still haven't painted the roof. Currently working on repairing my duramax. Then will probably go back to the International before I fall back to the white truck. Driving every weekend and still no return of the rust.

zinc primer is self etching. sand the rust off back to metal and apply. don't have to waste money on por15

Por without using a top coat isn't uv protected either, it will break down really quickly
You're going to like that stuff I put some on my vehicles be safe out there your buddy from Nebraska
I have used it for the inside of motorcycle tanks but this is my first time on an exterior surface. Hope your doing well Mat.

Would ya recommend this over expoxy primer?
Its not uv protection….

Is POR 15 kinda like the TV commercial "Franks Hot Sauce?" I Put That S&%t On Everything! DK, Omaha.
That is hilarious. 😂
Your a good son😊
The hard part is the stuff between the gasket and edge that can creep back under the easy prep surface
A quality primer would save a lot of time here good vid though ! cheers from florida

Great video
Thanks
Any updates on the roof paint, thanks
Still holding. I still haven't painted it because I am working on my other truck. When I do repaint the truck, there will definitely be a video.
@@wrenchbenders wow, must be a good product, i have the same problem 👍🏻
If you message us on Facebook, I will send some pics of hauling logs last week and what the roof currently looks like.
Is there a second part to this to show your next steps?
Honestly, the top of the truck has not been touched after this video. May do a review of how the POR 15 has held up over the last year or so.

I got the POR 15 kit off of Amazon. I appreciate the Like and if you have any questions let me know I will do my best to answer.
@@wrenchbenders I sure will, looking forward for more of ur great content. GOD bless ✌️
The most important thing to remember; before you paint your truck.......Move your Tahoe
The good news is i painted it inside. I had no idea that pressure washing would blow paint chips all over dad's tahoe. Lol

Great video, one question tho, can you roll on or spray on that POR stuff for a more even finish?
I am sure you can. There are few places where I put it on a little thick that I should have backed off on it but it self levels for the most part.
Did you ever buy new keepers for the roof trim? If you did can you send me the link please. Thanks. Great video BTW.

I dont think the POR15 you used comes in white. You have to buy the POR 15 top coat paint in white to go on top of what you did correct ?

Ok, very interesting indeed, I'm going to give this a try. My question is, what does soaking paper towels and letting the sit in a plastic bag do?
@@susanbearer3658 covering it in plastic would make sure that the paper towels dont dry up
If there is rust between the roof and windshield where they meet, you need to remove the windshield and fix it....

Excellent what I need to do for my old girl
Easier to sand blast it, faster and cleaner.
Have a fan in the garage?
A couple of them, why?

Left the door open, too. If someone had to use in an enclosed area I would definitely recommend a painters mask.
