It is kind of sad. Gotta say that seeing Josh playing with Pearl Jam on the road was a little bit of justice. Definitely deserves to get a little more love.
The level of disrespect from some of the fans on Josh is unreal. Without him, the Chilis would’ve been disbanded. Filling John’s shoes are difficult, but he did it. Not a lot of people can do that. I’m glad that Chad mentioned his name on the unveiling of RHCP’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star. Chad is the man.
wouldve honestly liked if they had went on a long hiatus & had no Josh,While Josh is a good guitarist i couldve done without those 2 RHCP albums it showed they were burned out.but the new album with John returning is not really that great, definately their last best album was Stadium
@@dynamo4543 I beg to differ that they were burned out. They experimented with unfamiliar sound in The Getaway. Songs like Dark Necessities, The Hunter & Dreams of a Samurai are a lot diff than their prev efforts, opening up to a whole lot younger and new audiences. That’s progress. But that’s just my two cents.
it's a shame that they won't play songs like goodbye angels or dark necessities in the upcoming tour, I would've loved to hear John's take on those songs just as much as I loved Josh's
You are on point, the podcast interviews with Rubin kinda let me down when they didn't even mention Josh's name or contribution to the band, huge huge elephant in the room. Josh isn't even a primary guitarist (I think he's a drummer first), yet he took the job of replacing a "guitar god" in one of the most famous rock bands in the world, and that takes some massive balls. I like John as a guitarist, but I like Josh as a human being (and a musician).
I feel tons and tons of love for Josh He is like so sweet and talented that it was imposible to me not to feel bad about him when he was fired I don't also like the way he is not being mentioned anymore, like he never existed. Only Chad has had the humility and kindness to recognize his work I love John, of course, he is my favorite artist
I feel like this is something done to appease John. Dave, Josh, and their contributions are usually tip-toed around and treated as this weird albatross in interviews. The guy is a genius, but I wouldn't be shocked if he's a bit of a primadonna behind the scenes.
I totally respect John only playing material he was a part of, he is my favorite guitar player of all time, but its weird that no one has straight up asked him about Josh in interviews. I'm pretty sure its on a list of "no go" topics. Josh literally said John deserves to be in the band and belongs there after getting fired and John can't even acknowledge him. Seems pretty cowardly to me. How much would it mean to Josh to hear him say "I cant thank him enough for all the years we collaborated and for all the beautiful music he created with these guys. Without him idk if this reunion would be possible" .
@@JeffPenaify I totally get that vibe from him and again I totally respect both those guys. Just seems like a missed opportunity to be humble and grateful and set a good example for all the people that look up to him. Easier said than done though for sure.
@@BennieTarrMusic that doesn’t mean he’s not introverted, they’re not mutually exclusive lol also heavy addiction and being in the low place that dude was in can absolutely change you and make you a lot more withdrawn, even after recovery
I think the beautiful irony is that everyone expected Frusciante to come back and step back into the 'guitar god' shoes, pumping out great riffs again, but he's as much, if not more, of a background element on Unlimited Love than Josh was on the albums he was a part of. By background element in that I actually feel that he's actually playing more like Josh does (more understated, less dominating guitar parts), other than when he solo's where he's generally letting it rip as he always does. In terms of how John has treated Josh, honestly, I think he's an asshat. If someone who I collaborated with on multiple albums, multiple projects, got them to join me on tour to help fill the sound and seemingly improve the mood of the band, and effectively key him up to replace him, then to turn around and be like "oh you're going to replace me with this guy that's perfect for the role? nah, i'm not going to talk to him again". Seems childish
Totally agree... I don't think unlimited love is a bad album. I just don't think it's what most people expected from John, especially with him playing himself up about being more of an accomplished musician with other instruments in his arsenal. Not that he said he would be using them all to showcase his talents. He specifically said he would be focusing on the guitar again as the creative language being spoken. But I don't believe that unlimited love is a better album than the getaway or I am with you. It is definitely on the fans at this point. I believe they did not accept the albums for what they were, which was a new layer of artistic view for the band. An evolution if you will. As far as the treatment from John to Josh, I think it's completely childish. You may exist in a world where responsibility isn't as prevalent as the everyday 9 to 5 person, but you are a grown up act like one do the "fans"a favor and play the songs that we want to hear. Not the songs that you want to play for us. This is how you make your money. So make your money and entertain us. I know it sounds very blunt but the truth of it is we make these artists. They would not be anything without us and we do enjoy the work but do not perceive to believe that you control us and that you can decide what you are willing to do for us. If we do not wish to have anything from you, we will simply deny you a space. It's not like that isn't happening nowadays on social media and in real life... I'm sure I'm going to catch some people that may not agree with me and that's fine. That's the point of making comments. They are of singular opinion that could be shared at times. It invites conversation and allows us to share each other's thoughts on certain subjects. Also I have thick skin and it's ultimately my opinion because the actions from both parties are what makes the reality of the situation....two people don't speak. One person is open somewhat the other avoids the questioning... Anyway, that's my two cents..
Completely agree with the point you man about how John has treated Josh. Johns on Howard Stern talking about how he's changed and how he sees his band mates, but yet he's been a complete POS regarding Josh. Regarding these new albums John's on, they are a steaming pile of garbage that's basically destroying the bands legacy.
Both guitarists are amazing in their own right! I love how Josh and John have different playing styles but of course, some RHCP fans do tend to throw Josh around the curb and hate on him, because he’s not John and doesn’t live up to his legacy when he left for his second departure from the band to focus on his solo career. “I’m With You” and “The Getaway” are good albums but their not perfect. Josh did an amazing job on those albums. After Josh’s departure, he said there was no animosity towards the band and was happy John was back with RHCP.
I would personally love to hear the sonic space again of both John and Josh playing live. Especially for stadium Arcadium tracks where multiple guitars were tracked. I even think back to a live video where they were playing this velvet glove off californication. Even that having Josh in acoustic guitar and John on electric created such a full sound
Josh and John used to play together on rhcp…also, would love both of them to tour together, but that’s unfair to Josh as it would be asking him to take a backseat to John
@@adderon John and Dave recently did a show together for the first time. It was for a fund raiser or something. Jane's Addiction performed too and John played with them too.
Couldn't agree more and had the same thought earlier today. I want to be very clear that John has yet to reject playing and of the IWY or Getaway tracks... and it's not clear what his current stance on those songs are... but it will be a pretty damning condemnation of John's ability to be a selfless member of a band if he isn't willing to play music from Josh's era. There's no "Navarro didn't vibe with the band" excuse this time, because now it's with his friend Josh, who he personally endorsed. To refuse to play any 2010's tracks would basically be Like, "hey, thanks for keeping my seat warm for 10 years, your work will not be played live anymore because I'm not emotionally mature enough to handle it."
@@chriswinter8511 say what you want about his body of work, but all it takes is one good song that's worthy of playing live. Josh certainly has at least one of those.
I have to say I strongly disagree. Those aren’t John’s songs, and none of them are any of the bands greatest hits. When the band has 6 albums worth of music with John, and all of their top 20-25 songs are his, why would he play someone else’s songs? Those are Josh’s songs, not John’s. I wouldn’t see it as disrespectful at all.
I really enjoy the psychedelic vibe Josh brought to the chili peppers and I would love to see John performing songs like goodbye angels, dreams of samurai, maggie, etc. First time John left the band he was struggling and getting through hard times, it's understandable he's feelings about playing ohm songs. For the last ten years beeing away from the band was his sobber decision. I love Frusciante and big part of my guitar playing is based on his improvisations and solos, but this time I don't think he has the right of outshining all great songs that were made.
Josh was very underrated on The Getaway. I think having kept Josh and having John return was a missed opportunity to creating a new chapter, new legacy and new dynamic to the RHCP. The way they did Josh was wrong, IMHO.
Just IMO ‘Feasting on the Flowers’ has the most catchy guitar part on any of the 3 latest albums. They really sounded like they were evolving on The Getaway, and Unlimited Love is nice but also a safe regression. I was one of the tiny few who was upset when John’s return was announced (doesn’t hurt that I saw Josh kill ‘Aeroplane’ on their last tour)
Post Return of the Dream Canteen, John is still amazing, and RHCP are still experimental, they just weren't putting that stuff on Unlimited Love. However, they should have pulled an Iron Maiden and have Josh stay alongside John. Would have been perfect
Yes, I hate when people dismiss Josh's contributions and the fact that he was perfect for the band as a close colaborator of John and the fact that he even toured with RHCP before being and official member, he made some great song with them that will stick with me forever (Also, his solo project Pluralone is great, he really shines as a multi-instrumentalist artist)
@@lilidlima can’t even spell half that sentence mate, Josh was just different from John doesn’t mean he’s not a good musician. He’s the reason rhcp are still together
I agree. It's been so long since I heard I'm With You but I remember enjoying a handful of tracks and The Getaway is probably my second favorite Pepper's album. Josh held his own
I COMPLETELY agree with you regarding Josh Klinghoffer. He's seriously underrated and some fans just couldn't appreciate him and stop comparing him to John Frusciante. I like BOTH of them and would love them BOTH in the band. I think it would be a shame if the band don't play any songs from I'm With You or The Getaway. Both albums contain some absolute BANGERS and you're right, Klinghoffer's guitar playing shines more in The Getaway. I definitely still listen to more tracks from The Getaway than I'm With You.
Dark Necessities will be one of my favorite songs from the RHCP. Josh added the exact amount of guitar in that song, fucking phenomenal. Nothing could've come close to what he put in the two albums he added. His style, his musical take, what a groove.
You’re totally right, man, in every single word you said. The Chillis have never had a bad guitar player. Even Navarro’s run was amazing, both in One Hot Minute and live. I honestly find it hard to understand this part of John’s personality, I find it silly, childish, arrogant, and annoying. Like he never did covers…
That part of John's personality it's call EGO, huge EGO. He's a diva. A lot of people (fans) don't like unlimited Love, it's like a disappointed but they never gonna recognized it because John is back. They gonna be a lot of money and win grammys or whatever...but all is because John is comeback
1) "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder (arguably the band's most well known cover) 2) "If you want me to stay" by Sly and the Family Stone 3) "Africa" by the Meters (they put "Hollywood" instead of Africa 4) "Hold Me Closer Tiny Dancer" by Elton John (as way back as 1990). 5) "Boyz n the hood" by Eazy E 6) Anything prior that John plays that is before his time (i.e. the first three albums) could I guess be also counted as covers. It's safe to say that they are no strangers to covers, but the songs we are talking about are from the band itself - which I am hoping they will play like "Look Around", "Brendan's Death Song", "Police Station", etc.
@@paolagimenez473 Silly comment, Johns played songs by other peppers guitarists, Navarro's style is just way different to his and the feel of the album is more metal??/ harder than everything else Peppers have done. Unlimited Love overall is a very good album, it is partially because of John, because he's a great guitarist and you can hear his presence on the album, you really couldn't that much with Josh. The album has Flea, Chad, John playing great and AK is classic AK. Now it's not up there with Californication etc but it's a mid level good album.
I like “im with you” and “the getaway” better than “unlimited love”. The new album is sub par in my opinion. The new album has some of Anthony’s worst lyrics and some of the most unimaginative parts from John. Josh definitely deserves more credit for what he did in rhcp.
I think that some fans just don't have an objective point of view. They overlook one hot minute, even though it's a good album (maybe not as good as some of the others) just because Frusciante isn't in it. The Getaway was a really good album, bringing a different and interesting sound to the peppers' catalog, but it still gets overlooked by some fans just because they aren't objective and they love Frusciante.
Aside from John not wanting to play the songs he wasn’t apart of, i found it a little frustrating that he comes back when the audience was actually starting to warm up to Josh’s place in the band.
Josh is a fantastic player and musician, going back and listening to The Getaway, its wayyyy better than I remembered, but it always felt like he was doing a John impression rather than really sinking into what makes him great. John does so much of the heavy lifting from a songwriting perspective I can see why the rest of the band really missed him being there. It's evident on the new record that everyone feels much more comfortable, a definite return to form, not that they were bad before but..... I'm really looking forward to Josh's solo stuff too!
I totally agree with you 100%. It set a bad taste in my mouth how Josh's departure was handled overall and it never felt like he got the appreciation he deserved. I will go even further to say that The Getaway is one of my favorite albums and to me, the songs on that album have deeper meaning and are more memorable than the songs on 'Unlimited Love.' At the end of the day, yes- John is better and makes sense for him to be in this band. However, I honestly believe they should've stuck with Brian Burton to be their producer. I think the song writing/ vocal performance for Anthony, would've improved a lot for Unlimited Love.
Klinghoffer was great. Both albums he wrote and played on have some career highlights for the Chilli Peppers and I'd rank him as my 2nd favourite person to take the guitar spot in the band. He was different and allowed the band to take a more contemporary edge during the '10s. I think Frusciante frankly just is the band's true guitarist and is unbeatable in that role, but Klinghoffer did his own thing with it and didn't try to imitate at any point. Major respect for him in all regards.
I completely agree with you. The getaway wasn't a perfect album, but I do feel like it has more personality and "edge" than unlimited love. Love the chili peppers, and love some songs from UL, but for me the album is just bland...
Hahaha If that is really one of your favorite albums then you know absolutely nothing! I thought I'd give those 2 a chance. Cause I missed one hot minute for many years and it was an amazing album But those 2 albums really really fuckin sucked. The 2 least chili albums ever!
I love both of them so much. It's very obviously the magic between the current line-up, but Josh was wonderful. I saw them live with him, and it was a fantastic experience. I did notice they don't say his name in interviews. Seems like it could be an internal struggle for John and have nothing to do with Josh himself. But still a shame if they don't play stuff like Goodbye Angels and Dark Necessities.
There’s probably more personal feelings and all that they want to keep private. Some famous people still want to remain somewhat private, and being private in their own thoughts and feelings is a way they can do it. John doesn’t owe anyone an explanation.
This actually made me look up Josh’s musical history. Dude is a very experienced musician, he once toured with Beck? Wasn’t aware at all how experienced he is. I definitely agree. Very happy John is back but Josh deserves more credit. I see he’s playing with Pearl Jam now, hope it’s working out well for him.
I was actually surprised with this album because if I’m honest, the singles didn’t captivate me. I definitely had to warm up to them. And while I do enjoy the album, this feels like something that they would’ve released during the getaway era. The getaway was great I loved it, but I feel like they would’ve moved on by now. Josh was pushing them to try something new and it bothers me that people are praising John when they would’ve burned Josh at the stake if it was released while he was in the band.
The songs on the current album are overall better than most on the Josh albums... Johns's guitar is more in the forefront and his presence on the album elevates it more than Josh did on his. Josh could have been anyone on those albums
@@chriswinter8511 Josh was newstead in those mixes. John is in the forefront because everyone elevates him like that including the chilis. As to josh's personality on the records I'd have to disagree, his presence made the band go in a more sophisticated way, just take a look at Chad grooves on the gateway vs unlimited love, or the use of keys, if anything josh didn't stray away enough from the same funk muted strum on every RHCP track. Overall a downgrade in songwriting this new album IMHO
I really really like Josh as a musician and human being. John has been like a "fallen idol" for me since he came back not willing to play any songs from Josh's era. He can't pretend to delete that part of the story. I am over his huge ego (sorry for my English).
I've sometimes feel like the only RHCP fan who honestly preferred Josh Klinghoffer and his style. And honestly, I'm With You is my favorite Chili Peppers album.
You put this into words wonderfully. I am a long time fan of RHCP, John Frusciante, and Josh Klinghoffer. I feel exactly the same. Really digging your channel.
Josh is an absolute beast. Loved him since way back when he was making records with John. I will admit that I'm extremely happy to see Frusciante back with the Chili Peppers, but Josh is a legend. Hope he's doing alright.
I have met josh even way before he was in the john and RHCP world. Check out Bicycle Thief only CD with Bob Forest. I would see them perform all the time. Josh was amazing and such a humble dude. When he started to work with John I saw them together and he told me he couldn't believe he was playing with John, it was a dream come true. From what I heard, Josh told John he was going to continue playing with RHCP when john was leaving again. John was not happy to hear this, mind you him and Josh were very close. Josh said that was the last time he talked to him. I think John was hurt about josh continuing to play with RHCP. One of my friends asked John about josh at Johnny Ramones Hollywood forever tribute and he didn't look happy that he brought Joshs name up. Maybe its that feeling of your friend dating your ex, i don't know. Also john didnt leave several times. He left twice, first time was understandable cus he was not happy with the new found fame. The second time I think he just needed to be an artist for a while and find himself.
I love Josh's music. Dot Hacker and Pluralone are awesome. Only a blind man can't see that the guy is a creator of beautiful melodies, with several collaborative projects (including Frusciante's solo albums), nominated by Frusciante himself to replace him at RHCP. See the power that massive and destructive criticism has. John is a genius, he was and always will be the guitar player who came together perfectly after Hillel and made the Chili Peppers reborn and that's undeniable but that doesn't take away the merit and value of Navarro and Josh that after so much help they still left through the back doors, in fact, it's not new that Flea and AK are scoundrels with substitutes. Sherman Was treated Like Trash by Anthony Kiedis( read Sherman's interview) Navarro learned by third parties that John was returning and Josh was treated worse than trash by John's homesick widows as if they wanted to take out their frustration and nonconformity of leaving on him being that he was no longer happy (Flea's words) and left because he wanted to and Josh was only helping beyond getting the peppers out of the quiet zone. (Honorable mention for Im Beside You which is far superior to the official album itself) The Getway was then Josh's masterpiece. The problem is that if you put Eric Clapton or a Steve Vai in Frusciante's place, the fans would complain just the same. It wouldn't be enough and they would look for a thousand faults, In the case of Navarro, who is a wonderful guitarist and nobody pays attention to OHM for his nostalgia and attachment to Frusciante. Greater ignorance is people who criticized Josh just because he wasn't John. His work with Red Hot was brilliant, The Getaway was an amazing record that yielded great songs. Josh has an incredible sensitivity to composing and this is seen both in red hot and in his other collaborations, whether playing guitar or other instruments. I believe that the strong pressure from the fans and the internal demand were so strong that they destabilized him or even demotivated him in his performance at the shows. Another factor is that he made it clear that he was not good at improvising. Something that Frusciante does with perfection and that ends up being another differential in the shows. Chad thinks he's one of the BEST MUSICIANS he's ever played with, thinks he writes well, etc. Eddie Vedder and Bob Forrest are also full of praise. Gnarls Barkley, Bob Forrest, PJ Harvey, Nine Inch Nails, Beck, Butthole Surfers, The Black Keys, Har Mar Superstar, Golden Shoulders, Jon Brion, Sparks, That Dog, The Bicycle Thief, Thelonious Monster and Vincent Gallo, Rhcp and Eddie Would Vedder and Morrissey ask a bad guy to play? Absolutely not. The problem is the endless and inconvenient comparisons and the guy didn't need to follow the same line as John, he didn't need to have the same behaviors on stage and much less reproduce what he did because if he had done, he would be accused of lack of originality and in the minds of many psychotic Rhcp fans, if the song doesn't have that endless solo to blow your brains out,no longer serves.
I kinda get where John is coming from with not wanting to play other songs. I think he described it somewhere in an interview like when you know how a band sounds and feels from being in it and then band makes music with another artist . It’s kind of like watching your partner sex tape with someone else it just doesn’t feel right. And I can respect that if he’s not comfortable then he’s not
I agree with you actually. I absolutely love John. But I got into the chilis around the time Josh was in the band, the first concert of theirs that I saw was with him, and he was phenomenal live. They always had great chemistry together. I feel as though he is the easy scapegoat for the bands failures the past couple of years and it’s completely unfair. If Josh maybe had an ego about himself or his music and people hated on him for that, it’d be one thing. But Josh in interviews comes off like a legitimately sincere human being. The fact that the four main members are sort of throwing him under the bus, or at least letting their fans do so, is kind of giving me a sour taste in my mouth 😕 Edit: I also agree that it’s very odd that John REFUSES to play other guitarist material. While I kind of get it when it comes to Navarros material, because that break up was a lot more contentious. But Josh was Johns friend and John CO-SIGNED his replacement in the band. Why wouldn’t he play his friends material? It comes off very pretentious. Almost like, “I’m above this material.”
@@alvinboota3628 yeah in an a podcast Josh said that he text John to reach out to him but got a pretty plain reply. Tbh I love John as a musician but I think he's probably a bit of a difficult person to work/get along with all the time.
I think it’s too soon to say John won’t play any of Josh’s material. I even think he may play some hits from OHM since him and Navarro seem to be cool now
I think its kind of a win win, we get John back for the RHCP we all love and we get Josh playing with Pearl Jam and putting more time into Pluralone (if you havent heard it, its so good) but i do feel bad
@@BenIrvine11 I have not heard Pluralone. I shall check them out now! And you are right. I admit I been lovin’ Unlimited Love more and more every time I listen to it. Thanks for the insight 🤘🏼
It's funny to see people putting Josh in this place as the hero of the band, when in fact he was mostly a supporting player. It was Flea who really guided the group during those years. From Dark Necessities to Factory of Faith, Etiophia to Go Robot, it is undeniable that most of the compositions in this time period are by Flea. About Josh getting kicked out, well, anyone who knows the history of these guys knows it's part of the dynamics of the band, they did the same with Jack Sherman, Cliff Martinez, Blackbird, Dave Navarro and etc.
I would like to add that Frusciante DOES play Hillel and Jack Sherman’s old stuff… they have played Me and My Friends many times and Kiedis even said that John wanted to play the first three RHCP albums while jamming in 2020… so the fact that he won’t play anything from the Klinghoffer era is particularly unfair.
that point doesn’t carry much weight because a. the band in 2022 barely play anything from the 80’s anymore b. John played plenty of Hillel songs when he first joined because the band had 3 albums out already and he had no choice but to learn those as the new guy. c. John is known for ignoring anything played by another guitarist AFTER he joined. not. one. single. song. he won’t do it. and ultimately it’s highly disrespectful to his friend Josh Klinghoffer. personally I think it’s because John is insecure about his own ability to play Dave & Josh’s material
According to Anthony Kiedis in Scar Tissue, as I recall, "Me and My Friends" was written with Hillel before Jack Sherman entered the picture. As far as John being "threatened" by Josh or Dave... lol, u funny... Neither of them have played anything as technically challenging as what John himself brought to the band. If anything, he'd find it boring to play. John wrote over 100 songs with RHCP. Why would he waste his time learning stuff that doesn't interest him? If anything, it's unfair and selfish of you children to expect him to play Josh's material.
@@mussman717word how could it be a waste of time learning the songs your fans want you to play? Because youre to selfish to play songs of records you didn't write in? I've got a sense that John would prefer the band to stop and do nothing after he left in 09 until whatever time he felt okay to get back together.
@@franckmelendez6751 I'm a fan, and I don't want to hear hin play those songs at all. It would be a waste of my time when he could be playing better ones that he wrote himself.
It was bittersweet getting that announcement in 2019, I was so excited to see more of John, but I knew I'd miss Josh too. I hope John agrees to play some of the "Josh output," the other 3 members worked hard over the decade he chose to pursue other things, and the works they produced in that era deserve respect. I've always admired John's artistic integrity and I'm sure this falls into that category to him, but it doesn't sit right with me either. Regardless, no matter what they play, I know I'll get my entire LIFE when I see them in August.
I completely agree with you. Josh Klinghoffer gets way too much. He’s extremely talented and his work with the Chili Peppers was really great. The Getaway is incredibly underrated and people don’t give to the chance because it’s not John Frusciante. I love Frusciante’s work but Klinghoffer needs “Unlimited Love” too
Extremely talent? And the awful lives with him? How a talent musician doing this kind of thing? Josh is not good, it was a totally mistake give the job to be a guitarrist in chili peppers to him.
@@lilidlima you’re only proving my point of people giving him too much shit. Sorry not everything can be strictly Frusciante and Rick Rubin. You’re loss
Dark Necessities, Brendan's Death Song, Ethiopia, Look Around, Goodbye Angels, The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie, Goodbye Hooray, The Longest Wave, Sick Love and plenty more.
I feel like the longest wave is Josh’s “under the bridge”. I liked both albums a lot with Josh. I feel the Getaway he really improved on the guitar. I was totally fine with the direction the peppers were headed in with Josh. Of course I’m thrilled with the classic lineup back in action though.
John is hands down my favorite musician and largest musical influence, BUT... Josh's work with Pluralone and Dot Hacker is incredible, and I honestly like it more than the 2 albums he made with the chilis
John's ego seems to be the problem as far as his refusal to play stuff that other people wrote. It sucks. He's an awesome musician. And even if he never listened to the last couple of albums, he's so talented that he could learn that material in a day or something so that is no excuse (even though I personally don't believe for a second that he never listened to anything they did while he was away). While Josh is obviously nowhere near the guitarist that John is, he is an extremely talented musician who I feel breathed new life into the band and in Flea's own words kept the band going. Shame he is getting glossed over completely when they discuss the past decade in interviews and such.
@Washing Up Liquid This needs to be said. John Frusciante gives RHCP its "signature" sound. RHCP with Josh and Danger Mouse sounded like...RHCP going out of their comfort zone, exploring new territory. It sort of felt like a spin-off. Unlimited Love sounds very, very similar to Stadium Arcadium. Chad, Flea and Frusciante all contribute to this sound, but I feel like John is the one driving them in a certain direction. He's also, arguably, the most beloved member in the band.
I’m a massive Chili Peppers fan and an even bigger fan of JF. Josh is an amazing musician, having worked on so many projects with RHCP and John via Ataxia and other works and he was great in The Bicycle Thief. Plus I rewatched Off The Map (2001) recently and I’m pretty sure Josh’s face turned up in that. I’ve got massive respect for Josh. But ultimately John’s playing the songs he’s helped to create and I’m sure can vibe with a lot more on stage - I feel John is the ultimate and belonging guitarist for the band and Josh and Navarro were placeholders for lack of a better word. I enjoyed the stuff Josh worked on but leaning back on John’s totally accurate words, “I was born to be in this band”. He’s gotta play his stuff.
The reason I always gave John some leeway with his refusal to play OHM material was because it was during his dark heroin period, so maybe he had a lot of bad feelings surrounding his departure/ his reason for leaving. This time it was much more of a thought out decision when he left. Here’s a hot take : I think the chili peppers constantly have someone in the band holding them back from fully growing. I think it’s a result of their overly democratic “every band member has 25% input and we vote on everything” mentality. One hot minute saw them going into a much more evolved route that was pushing forward what they did with BSSM before. It went further out and wasn’t afraid to be psychedelic, long songs. But they didn’t like that album. Same for by the way - John had a lot of control behind this album and it caused rift between flea and him at the very least. Again - one of their better albums after BSSM. John was trying to push them past the notion they HAD to do funk, and they did some soft pretty stuff. Californicatjon and stadium Arcadium were largely just slightly repurposed things from BSSM. During the trajectory of Johns influence to the band, I feel like his playing has always gotten better and changed, yet each album added more sterile ideas of what a RHCP song should be. Sort of the same way a Midwestern hard core band is - 15 second intro, vocals , then drums come in, break down , chorus, second instrumental breakdown, 30 second guitar solo, and outro. Josh was the one chance of bringing change to the band and he did. I’m with you is probably top 5 things they’ve done. The new time signatures / chad smith actually being pushed to play something different than what he always does, a jazz fusion part on a song (that of course they still don’t ride out for more a minute , they have to Reign in any improvisation or jam after no more than a minute for some weird reason ) the album was great and I remember hearing josh talk about how he loved freaked styley and uplift mofo party plan and wanted to do an album of songs more like that but the band wasn’t really following him on that. lameeeee. Their core essence was club music at first. BSSM was kind of club still but maybe theatre music. But after that all John has written with them was stadium rock , and they just tour stadiums. they aren’t a stadium rock band and never did that well. i think josh and John would’ve been a real unique combo with josh doing textural stuff etc. I mean hell, all the cool electronic music John made , really cool stuff, and there’s no synths or any use of his electronic music brought into the band? I think John has too rigid of an idea of things and is kind of the opposite of “go with the flow “ he very much has an idea of what Red Hot Chili Peppers music sounds like, and I wish they would all just make music, and not think about if it’s a RHCP song, if it has synths , a 2 minute jam, an extra guitar player, something that can’t fit / be on the radio, not think about playing it at a stadium. With groups like hiatus kaiyote , thundercat, etc etc , these guys are eventually going to sound like dad rock in comparison if not already slightly . They have the musical chops, and Anthony does have the ability to sing good Melodies (did I let you know) and sing (no auto tune on BSSM, and sounds way better than all the subsequent melodyned albums) i wish they could break out of whatever weird things they’re in and just truly get weird with it but I think that’s the paradigm of being successful at that scale. the paradox of making black eyed blonde / sir psycho sexy while they weren’t stadium acts but then when they got this big they now just have this sterilized thing. Now I’m realizing that I might have had rose color glasses on and that somewhere along the way RHCP became a “brand band” ala 311/ sublime : where instead of evolving and never doing the same thing twice, they reach out slightly beyond what they’ve done , but always make sure they bring that “signature sound”. its the almost silly kid who nervously laughs after telling a joke ruining its chance to be funny. Its a landlord painting over a smoke stained wall. It’s virtual restaraunts inside of a bertuccis . Mmm , now I want some Chili’s (Just my opinion by the way of course , I love by the way , IWY, BSSM, freaky styley and uplift, )
Very glad you made this video John. After watching many interviews with the band on the current album cycle I've been increasingly annoying & pissed at the fact Josh seems to have been completely thrown under the bus for nothing bad on his part at all. Josh was incredible, he carried the torch & kept the band relevant in the 2010's when they could've simply faded into obscurity with two brilliant albums & deserves credit & respect. I see no reason why the band couldn't be a 5 piece with Josh doing either rhythm guitar or keys , him & John used to play really well together & wrote incredible material. The whole thing just makes me sad honestly. Josh deserves so much better, its like his parter has dumped him for the x they had years ago. I'd be proper pissed if I was him tbh. A proper dick move from the rest of the band. Show Josh some love & hard erned respect RHCP, same goes to the fans aswell who have been absolutely vile towards him the past decade.
I enjoy both of them but prefer John. It’s a bummer he won’t play Josh’s songs cause I was looking forward to hear dark necessitates live when I go in September.
Ok, kill me but for me "The Getaway" is better than "Unlimited love". I remember that Josh said in some interview that he didn't like to work with Rick and that's why they used Danger Mouse for " The Getaway". I also believe that "I'm with you"and Josh's guitar playing was pushed by Rick to sound like John. This is why "The Getaway" shines out Joshs creativity and talent cause he got freedom to express himself. Oh...I wouldn't be surprise if Rick wasn't actually" big part of that "bring John- kick out Josh" story.
I’m with you. No pun intended. Particularly IWU was for me a far better album than unlimited love. I was excited to hear John coming back, until I heard the album. I’m sorry That I didn’t appreciate Josh when he was there. Goodbye Hooray from IWU is better than anything on Unlimited Love.
Black Summer, These Are the ways, Aquatic Mouth dance, The great Apes and one way traffic make Unlimited Love by far a solid album in comparison with Im With you and The Getaway
The Josh albums are ok, but certainly some of the weaker chili peppers albums, They have bright spots on a couple of songs but they just aren't a full chili peppers sound for large parts of the albums.... Even in the weaker songs on unlimited Love, the sound feels fuller due to John being back. You can feel John's presence in the album.... in Josh's albums.. you really couldn't feel Josh's presence. I'm With you is amongst my least fav peppers albums.
@@chriswinter8511 yep that’s a pretty reasonable critique. And fair call. They Josh albums on the are lighter without JF’s guitar. But Goodbye Hooray on I’m with you is on par with the Pepper’s best work for my mind.
Ok. Give me an ax. The Getaway was awful, and even Josh wasn't that crazy about it. He felt like Danger Mouse scrapped a lot of the best material he contributed. The other three were trying DESPERATELY to be relevant and Josh's reputation was only dragged down by its failure. Poor guy.
The fact that John won't play any of the josh era's songs just makes me feel sick. I get the talks about Dave Navarro and the One Hot minute songs, but I find hard to accept the negligence about josh's work
Honestly like us all I’m happy to see John back but I do think it’s really disappointing and disrespectful for them to seemingly ignore josh and there history for the last 12 years and pretend like it didn’t happen. I’m with you and I’m beside you are solid records and the getaway was great in my opinion. The fact we won’t hear songs like dark necessities and goodbye angels is sad and seems unfair to josh as an artist.
Josh was great. He kept the band warm during John's absence and I do feel that Josh had a lot more in him than what we got to hear on his RHCP albums but it feels like he got pushed behind for whatever reason. Josh's guitar playing shines much more on the "I'm beside you" songs and those two recent leaked tracks from "The Getaway"(Kyle and Outer Space). We owe Josh a lot for keeping the band alive during those years.
I really need to revisit The Getaway because I love about 90% of I'm With You and can almost play that album from start to finish without any skips. Josh in the band really let Flea and Chad shine a bit more imo
This really surprised me to learn. The RHCP are my favorite band of all time and John is my idol but I am disappointed at his lack of humility in regarding Josh after all his contributions to the band. I thought John was more of a modest man than that 🫤
I was legit thinking this after the Rick Rubin podcast. No mention of josh in any of these interviews or podcasts. The only time I can think of josh being acknowledged was the Hollywood walk of fame ceremony and Chad thanked him
Thanks for the video, I love John and I was always cool with Josh and appreciate how he kept the band alive for the time being. It’s sad to hear this about John but my respect went up for Josh.
Why I see why one would assume that they won’t play any Josh-era songs, I think it’s too early to tell. The only « real » show that they’ve done so far was barely one hour long and they didn’t play any Californication songs either - so I don’t think it’s necessarily representative of what we’re going to get during the upcoming tour.
I personally love both I’m with you and the getaway! Loved Josh’s time in the band and it was very exciting to have John back but at the same time I didn’t like how things ended with Josh. I’m one of those fans where I feel we were put in an awkward position lol. Love both guitar players though and enjoy what they bring to the chili peppers! ❤️🤟🏾
I watched a live performance of Aeroplane that they did a couple years ago and you can tell they're all having a blast with it because the last time they performed it live was probably in late 90's. A big win for John would be to play some of the songs on 'I'm with you' or 'The Getaway'.
I thought they should've kept Josh and added John back in to have a double guitar attack. That would've really elevated the Chili peppers to a whole other new level.
John is one of my musical heroes, but he knows he's good and definitely has the band by the balls. Josh is such a likable guy and he was in it 100%, clearly a dedicated hard worker. I get the dynamic with John is so great but they really did Josh dirty. I don't think anybody can deny that.
That should show you who they kinda are. I mean I love John. But he knows the Chilli peppers are just a money machine. And he s found a way to leave , come and then go.
As a musician myself I can understand John needing a break to do something else, especially since the Chilis are pretty much go-go-go. But leaving and coming back over and over is kind of... We're not in their personal world so we shouldn't assume we know everything either.
Of course we can only know as far as what they are showing us in the media … but it does look like there’s an unhealthy pattern there. Someone once said, “Josh is that good new boyfriend who does nothing wrong but you just can’t love no matter what. While John is that psycho ex you keep on coming back to, even when you know it’s bad.” And that feels … spot on
After listening to their chats with Rick Rubin it's easier to understand their point of view on the matter. I still feel bad for Josh, though he seems to be doing fine. Still love the Peppers, from the outside looking in it's still kind of weird.
@@bumblefritz they've been doing this forever. Jack Sherman, Martinez, Peligro, Arik, Blackbird, Navarro, etc. It's always been like 'it's not working with this guy, let's call that other guy'. Josh is just another name on this list. And, right or wrong, this dynamic was fundamental for them to get where they are today.
Great video. Always absolutely loved John, but also always loved Josh ever since hearing "Omission". The Getaway has been one of my favorite RHCP albums. For what it's worth, I don't think Josh would've gone on to create all the amazing music as Pluralone if it weren't for this incident, so in a weird sense it seems to have worked out in the best possible way for everyone. Oh and Unlimited Love is fantastic, but my favorite "new" RHCP song is probably one of the recently leaked unreleased Getaway B-sides, so... :)
Just a thanks from mentionning Omission, gonna listen to it and the whole album where it comes from, it's been a while. Little sad to feel like those 2 aren't friends anymore. From what i know, they didn't spoke for years when John was gone from RHCP and now he wouldn't even mention Josh name, that's sad but well... it is how it is.
@@GuillaumeG-oz3hz it's a great song on one of the best albums ever. And I agree, one of the saddest things about all this is this broken friendship between John and Josh.. I guess both of them will be able to somehow transform it into beautiful music.
@@GuillaumeG-oz3hz for some songs, the acoustic/demo versions were actually the first ones I heard! Specifically Chances and Everyperson come to mind :) I'll have to revisit that one as well!
Love that your video popped up on my feed. I've also been consuming a lot of the new interviews with the band and had a similar response. Great articulation on a sensitive topic. I've always equated RHCP with love and friendship so I really hope there's no bad blood and they can find a balance in having John back while still praising Josh's contributions. I agree that The Getaway has some underrated songs that shouldn't be dismissed in the band's legacy.
I use to shit on im with you. But me and my best friend listen to it and we were like why did we hate this! He is extremely talented and brought new life into the band. The fact they couldn’t just have both guitarists is ridiculous. They never say his name in interviews and to me I’ve lost a lot of respect for the band. I’ll love the music always but they brought bad juju into the band by kicking him out. I honestly prefer the last 2 albums to unlimited love and feel it would have been better if they kept Josh as well and John
Well, the message they translate is in a kind of a dissonance between what they're doing. Dudes are all about love and bla bla, yet they treat Josh like trash. The same guy that friggin helped them stay afloat without drastically changing their sound. You'd think they understood value of that after Navarro (one hot minute still a good album). Love them in their old days, but nowadays bugs me too much.
Josh will always be my favourite guitarist of theirs for all he did for them. I Fell in love with his guitar playing and quickly dove into Dot Hacker and his solo material after his departure from RHCP. Real genuine talent thru and thru
For me jhon is like the toxic ex girlfriend that come back when she wants, Josh was like the little brother making rhcp like a great family would be nice they didn't accept jhon come back.
I would love for Josh, Jonh, and Joe Lally to make another Ataxia record. The Chili Pepper records with Josh were very good. Wasn't Josh part of the Rock and Roll hall of fame ceremony? So, he has gotten credit for his contribution. One Hot Minute is a dang good record too.
The problem with the Josh era albums in my opinion is that his guitar is too quiet in the mix. I certainly don't blame Josh for the 2 bad albums he played on. The band and John have treated Josh really badly, but saying that I'm glad John is back
I find it kind of funny how Klinghoffer is getting called "boring" when you consider how much of Frusciante's work is done with the philosophy of minimalism - often playing something like 3 chords or just very few notes, leaving a bigger part of the song to Flea and taking on a "support" role. The verse in "Around the World" or "Parallel Universe" are great examples of this. I'm With You is, from the guitar perspective, absolutely a great album and somehow both follows Frusciante's philosophies of minimalism, funk, punk and many small extra parts all over the song, yet also Klinghoffer's own style. It's weird, because I'm convinced that if that album came out now in 2022 and it was Frusciante who played it (but it all sounded 100% like the album with Klinghoffer), then people would absolutely love it. I'm a huge Frusciante fan, but in my opinion I'm With You is, from the guitar alone, just a strong album as Unlimited Love.
You pretty much expressed my thoughts and feelings on the lack of respect, appreciation and love that for the most part has been shown towards Josh Klinghoffer by certain members of RHCP. And although John Frusciante will always be my personal favorite guitarist as a whole.. I have to say Josh contributed some amazing and beautiful music to this band on both albums he did as a Chili Pepper member. I truly love "The Getaway" though.
The man doesn't want to play songs he doesn't have an intimate relationship with. Soo what?! We just had 10 years of what you were describing, now, we're blessed to get a 3rd Frusciante era. Me personally? The less "songs" on their set list the better, because that just provides more opportunities for improvising. I once saw the 3 guys improvise a song for an encore that not only was breathtakingly incredible & intense for every second of it. It was also, 30 minutes long & I've never looked @ music, art or beauty quite the same way
Glad you made this video. I've been thinking a lot about Josh. John better play 2010's music. Honestly though, I dont like the new album and I'm one who loved the albums with Josh.
I love Josh’s albums with RHCP. John is my favorite guitarist of all time, but after listening to all of RHCPs albums several times, I find myself going to The Getaway and I’m With You fairly often and I keep liking them more and more. Josh just brings an edgy and nuanced flavor to the mix with all the same funk and chili-pepperness. His riffs are so melodically sound and somewhat unpredictable in an exciting way, while remaining listenable for general audiences. I also think that Josh’s albums are some of Chad’s best albums. The Police, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix’s bands all proved that when the guitar and drums play off of each other, amazing things take place, and it’s evident for Josh and Chad as well. Josh’s timing and placement just enhanced Chad’s already masterful rhythms and changed the flavor of the whole band in a brilliant way. John and Flea are definitely the big duo of the group. Anthony and Chad both have a remarkable ability to build on what those two create in terms of melody, but as Flea has said, a lot of their most popular songs come from a near telepathic bond between him and John that allows great songs to be conjured in no time, flat. Flea also said that he didn’t experience that with Josh and that there were time that Josh would present an idea on the guitar and Flea didn’t know what to do with it immediately. John and Josh in the studio together would have ushered the Chili Peppers into their best era yet, and I have no doubt about that. It makes me realize that, as brilliant as John is, he is not the end-all-be-all guitarist of modern rock, or even the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It’s genuinely upsetting to know that it what exists now is not as good as what could have been. I’m happy that Josh is happy and has moved on, and I hope that the Chili Peppers can bring us something fresher for next album. My personal fanaticism is nearly dependent on it. P.S.: Every song that Josh wrote is better than Black Summer. Black Summer is worst song that the Peppers have ever put out. It’s worse than Hump de Bump, which I personally don’t mind that much. The fact that a song so jaw-droppingly boring came from John nearly brings a tear to my eye. Its absence would have made Unlimited Love a better album.
Yeah agreed, I don't see why they couldn't just have two guitarists, Foo Fighters kept Chris Shifflet when Pat Smear came back, yet you can barely tell they have three guitarists most of the time. Also they could perform songs like This Velvet Glove and Dosed which require two guitarists. Also I've heard Unlimited Love a few times and I like it, but honestly, I think I prefer The Getaway.
Coz the ego of this 4. They don't like share credits and money with others. Specially Anthony and Flea who are like dictators in the band deciding who comes and goes. Jhon also is very narcissistic and selfish. He thinks that is very "high intelectual" too much for "normal people". Their personalities are very questionable, for this reason the band was always very unstable. Only Chad is more centered and quiet.
They would feel having two guitar players in the band and becoming a 5 member band wouldn't work and ruin the chemistry. Plus John's relationship with Josh got completely strained when Josh joined RHCP. Would've been cool to have both of them in the band and Josh deserves a lot of credit for keeping the Peppers going in the 2010's.
Tbh the getaway is what completely opened me up to the RHCP catalog. The longest wave is so sick, same with feasting on the flowers. I’ve since completely listened to ever single song they have released or some they haven’t released and fell in love. I’m not sure without Josh that would’ve happened. I’m glad John is back for sure but Josh did a hell of a job filling in for an absolute legend and as well as writing some material that I would argue is as complex if not more at times
At the end of the day, Frusciante is the sole reason the band has risen to the level of fame and success that they have. If he hadn’t of joined back in 88 the level of musicianship and songs would not have surpassed that of The Uplift Mofo Party plan. His musical ability and song writing is what allowed the chili’s to move on from clubs and sell out arenas. Flea, Chad and Anthony all play a great role but without John we wouldn’t be talking about them today. His life has been a wild ride of drugs, rehab, fame and solitude. They may be called the Red Hot Chili Peppers even with Klinghoffer and Navarro but the real RHCP will only ever be Frusciante. So I can understand why he doesn’t want to play their songs.
Right on! Josh saved this band, infused energy into it after the sort of depressed end to the SA tour. He allowed them to tap into their deeper catalog, places John typically doesn’t want to go, and sort of just rock out for a while. Are they better with John? Obviously. But they kicked some ass with Josh and I’m grateful for that.
Totally agree with you. Personally, I’ll always appreciate Josh for giving us great tracks like Sick Love, Goodbye Angels, Raindance Maggie, etc. That being said, I much prefer John being in the band, it’s so much more their sound. In Flea’s interview with Rick, he actually does talk about Josh and how he loved the stuff they did with him but the writing process was much more difficult because they didn’t have the same automatic connection as with John. Really good insight after John and Anthony didn’t even mention Josh in their interviews.
John Frusciante? Love him. Josh Klinghoffer? Love him. Oops? Let’s talk about something that kinda grinds my gears 🌶
It is kind of sad. Gotta say that seeing Josh playing with Pearl Jam on the road was a little bit of justice. Definitely deserves to get a little more love.
That made me feel good too, I believe Ed heard of it and immediately called. I also love that Chad is in the Earthlings band.
I'm with you 110%Im not satisfied that's he's with PJ
Maybe I'm the only one but The Getaway is my favourite rhcp album. Just listen to the guitar work on the longest wave, sick love and goodbye angels.
100%
The level of disrespect from some of the fans on Josh is unreal. Without him, the Chilis would’ve been disbanded. Filling John’s shoes are difficult, but he did it. Not a lot of people can do that. I’m glad that Chad mentioned his name on the unveiling of RHCP’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star. Chad is the man.
You can say hes a real CHAD
Dark necessities is one of my fave songs that would never have been possible without Josh 🙌🏻
wouldve honestly liked if they had went on a long hiatus & had no Josh,While Josh is a good guitarist i couldve done without those 2 RHCP albums it showed they were burned out.but the new album with John returning is not really that great, definately their last best album was Stadium
@@hdsg8361 this song is basically piano and bass.
I expecting they don't came back to play this sh!t again nevermore
I want John's version of The Longest Wave
They won’t play dark necessities?
@@djpotassium probably not, John only plays his shit
@@JrnmoSanB it’s a huge hit though!
Amen! Josh is a class act seems like a real down to earth good guy but John while a guitar legends seems like a douche
I feel tons and tons of love for Josh
He is like so sweet and talented that it was imposible to me not to feel bad about him when he was fired
I don't also like the way he is not being mentioned anymore, like he never existed. Only Chad has had the humility and kindness to recognize his work
I love John, of course, he is my favorite artist
It’s probably a really uncomfortable and upsetting topic for John, who’s a pretty reserved introverted guy
@@JeffPenaify I totally get that vibe from him and again I totally respect both those guys. Just seems like a missed opportunity to be humble and grateful and set a good example for all the people that look up to him. Easier said than done though for sure.
He's an egomaniac...
@@JeffPenaify He's not introverted at all. He is an egomaniac.
@@BennieTarrMusic that doesn’t mean he’s not introverted, they’re not mutually exclusive lol also heavy addiction and being in the low place that dude was in can absolutely change you and make you a lot more withdrawn, even after recovery
I feel Josh will soon get appreciated more now John is back in the band. Because it was different, it's OKAY to appreciate both.
The band members (except Chad) are pretending he didn't make part of them. I'm really annoyed
@@JrnmoSanB Yeah me too, especially annoyed by John, he's acting like any material they've done without him doesn't even exist.

Yeah, I don’t understand why Josh couldn’t stay when John came back. I think Josh would have complimented John’s playing.
Josh and John used to play together on rhcp…also, would love both of them to tour together, but that’s unfair to Josh as it would be asking him to take a backseat to John
@@michaelscott70 kinda like when Pat Smear joined the Foo Fighters, and Chris Sciflett thought he was done? That band had like 4 guitarists!
Maybe someday John, Josh and Dave will share the stage for a few RHCP songs
👏👏👏👏 totally agree with you
100%!! well said man. i think his reluctance to play anything by another guitarist is his own insecurities & arrogance coming out.
Josh's parts didn't really stand out for large parts of both albums. May not be enough meat on the bone for John
I desagree. Josh was awful from the chili peppers. I don't like Josh as guitarrist and the álbuns with him was terrible.
@@lilidlima well that's ur opinion, but objectively Josh is an amazing guitarrist and musician
Josh held his own
Check out I’m Beside You! It’s a goldmine for his guitar work & writing
Exactly. He even does a BeeGees cover at one of the live concerts I've seen on UA-cam. That was kinda weird.
That part of John's personality it's call EGO, huge EGO. He's a diva. A lot of people (fans) don't like unlimited Love, it's like a disappointed but they never gonna recognized it because John is back. They gonna be a lot of money and win grammys or whatever...but all is because John is comeback
1) "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder (arguably the band's most well known cover)
2) "If you want me to stay" by Sly and the Family Stone
3) "Africa" by the Meters (they put "Hollywood" instead of Africa
4) "Hold Me Closer Tiny Dancer" by Elton John (as way back as 1990).
5) "Boyz n the hood" by Eazy E
6) Anything prior that John plays that is before his time (i.e. the first three albums) could I guess be also counted as covers.
It's safe to say that they are no strangers to covers, but the songs we are talking about are from the band itself - which I am hoping they will play like "Look Around", "Brendan's Death Song", "Police Station", etc.
@@someguy2744 That's what I mean! He can do tons of covers but not songs by Navarro or Josh? Just sad.
Josh definitely deserves more credit for what he did in rhcp.
yea the choruses on UL are so cringy but the verses are good, meanwhile IWY, IWithoutY, and TG were very solid full albums
Agree completely
Agreed, Josh’s guitar playing was colourful and creative.
That’s a hot take… but I’m not disagreeing with you!😬
In all fairness, I've always found RHCP's lyrics to be their weakest suit.
I just went back to listening to "I'm with you" yesterday an appreciated it more now than I did when it just came out.
Loved The Getaway
Hahaha
If that is really one of your favorite albums then you know absolutely nothing!
I thought
I'd give those 2 a chance.
Cause I missed one hot minute for many years and it was an amazing album
But those 2 albums really really fuckin sucked. The 2 least chili albums ever!
Uh oh.. looks like I made someone really upset here.
I saw them live with Josh, and they played a song from every era of RHCP, i hope John puts the fans first before himself and plays the true classics
Josh's contribution will stick with us forever, so many great songs
There’s probably more personal feelings and all that they want to keep private. Some famous people still want to remain somewhat private, and being private in their own thoughts and feelings is a way they can do it. John doesn’t owe anyone an explanation.
This actually made me look up Josh’s musical history. Dude is a very experienced musician, he once toured with Beck? Wasn’t aware at all how experienced he is.
I definitely agree. Very happy John is back but Josh deserves more credit. I see he’s playing with Pearl Jam now, hope it’s working out well for him.
Dude have you seen his performance with pj Harvey on Jools Holland on the song who the f…? It’s amazing
IMHO unlimited love it´s a downgraded version of I´m with you and the gettaway
@@chriswinter8511 Josh was newstead in those mixes. John is in the forefront because everyone elevates him like that including the chilis. As to josh's personality on the records I'd have to disagree, his presence made the band go in a more sophisticated way, just take a look at Chad grooves on the gateway vs unlimited love, or the use of keys, if anything josh didn't stray away enough from the same funk muted strum on every RHCP track. Overall a downgrade in songwriting this new album IMHO
@@chriswinter8511 I disagree
I really really like Josh as a musician and human being. John has been like a "fallen idol" for me since he came back not willing to play any songs from Josh's era. He can't pretend to delete that part of the story. I am over his huge ego (sorry for my English).
The I'm Beside You B side record is transcendental
I've sometimes feel like the only RHCP fan who honestly preferred Josh Klinghoffer and his style.
And honestly, I'm With You is my favorite Chili Peppers album.
Same. Way more of a modern indie sound that made it super appealing
I am with you was great from beginning till the end. It was great!
He’s thriving! His solo records are stellar & he’s been closely working with Eddie Vedder too - I do miss him in the Peppers though
which begs the question: why can't they have both guitarists at the same time going forward?
I don’t get it either, they’ve literally already done it before as mentioned in this video
Ego
Probably dont want to split the money five ways equally
And I can respect that if he’s not comfortable then he’s not
I 100% agree with everything you said here. Spot on.
The fact that the four main members are sort of throwing him under the bus, or at least letting their fans do so, is kind of giving me a sour taste in my mouth 😕
Edit: I also agree that it’s very odd that John REFUSES to play other guitarist material. While I kind of get it when it comes to Navarros material, because that break up was a lot more contentious. But Josh was Johns friend and John CO-SIGNED his replacement in the band. Why wouldn’t he play his friends material? It comes off very pretentious. Almost like, “I’m above this material.”
John hasn’t played with the band in 12 years. Wait and see it. People change.
@@vitorqro I hope so!

I love RHCP with all my heart, but I still can’t help to feel pissed at them for how they did Josh.

Unpopular opinion, The Getaway > Unlimited Love
I would like to add that Frusciante DOES play Hillel and Jack Sherman’s old stuff… they have played Me and My Friends many times and Kiedis even said that John wanted to play the first three RHCP albums while jamming in 2020… so the fact that he won’t play anything from the Klinghoffer era is particularly unfair.
that point doesn’t carry much weight because
a. the band in 2022 barely play anything from the 80’s anymore
Man I love the two albums with Josh and the period in general. I just hope John plays them one day, Josh deserves that.
I love em too, my favorite song from I’m With You is Did I Let You Know. I think that’s some of Josh’s best guitar work.

Brendan's Death Song, Police Station, Dark Necessities, Ethiopia, will not be easily forgotten
And Encore 🤌🤌🤌
John's ego seems to be the problem as far as his refusal to play stuff that other people wrote. It sucks. He's an awesome musician. And even if he never listened to the last couple of albums, he's so talented that he could learn that material in a day or something so that is no excuse (even though I personally don't believe for a second that he never listened to anything they did while he was away). While Josh is obviously nowhere near the guitarist that John is, he is an extremely talented musician who I feel breathed new life into the band and in Flea's own words kept the band going. Shame he is getting glossed over completely when they discuss the past decade in interviews and such.
@Washing Up Liquid a totally on point comment👍
John is an Artist. Josh is the musician in this equation, he puts the music before himself.
What if RHCP had Two guitarists John AND Josh?
Mmm , now I want some Chili’s
(Just my opinion by the way of course , I love by the way , IWY, BSSM, freaky styley and uplift, )
I with you on this Josh deserves better
Josh was great. Josh is great. He deserves respect and mentioning.
Show Josh some love & hard erned respect RHCP, same goes to the fans aswell who have been absolutely vile towards him the past decade.
oh why? John's ego and Flea and AK's submission with him
I enjoy both of them but prefer John. It’s a bummer he won’t play Josh’s songs cause I was looking forward to hear dark necessitates live when I go in September.
No where they messed up is not having both of them play guitar. You can never have too much guitarists. And now John can solo of funky chords.
Poor guy.
You know what would really be not fair?
If we missed out on Unlimited Love & Dream Canteen to protect Josh’s feelings.
Listen to the IWY b-side album, if you haven’t already. It’s Josh at his finest imo
Fans acting like Josh didn‘t slay the Dark Necessities Outro smh
Very important points. Thank you for posting!!!
@@darlinguniverse56 The acoustic version of SCWP is my favourite, for sure in my top 10 of all time
@@GuillaumeG-oz3hz for some songs, the acoustic/demo versions were actually the first ones I heard!
I honestly prefer the last 2 albums to unlimited love and feel it would have been better if they kept Josh as well and John
at lease josh jams with chad . Chad is the only one that spoke about him.
The band and John have treated Josh really badly, but saying that I'm glad John is back
They aren't bad albums, just different.
I truly love "The Getaway" though.
the getaway is my favorite album 😭
The man doesn't want to play songs he doesn't have an intimate relationship with. Soo what?! We just had 10 years of what you were describing, now, we're blessed to get a 3rd Frusciante era. Me personally? The less "songs" on their set list the better, because that just provides more opportunities for improvising. I once saw the 3 guys improvise a song for an encore that not only was breathtakingly incredible & intense for every second of it. It was also, 30 minutes long & I've never looked @ music, art or beauty quite the same way
I don't understand why they couldn't have kept both the members I mean he was doing guitar work for them before he was a member
Totally agree! Very well said.
He is fucking talented and was in the RHCP. No need to feel sorry for him.
John’s a bit of a diva.
And yes, the guys have not mentioned Josh nearly enough. It’s super lame.
