There's so many brand new sounds they explore in this album. The chorus of "Reach out" sounds like Psychedelic Rock and they even use drum machines in a track here. Not to mention his spoken word style flow and lyrical miracle type lyrics at the end of in the snow. It's different to their traditional sound but I like it
Bag of Grins is hands down one of the single greatest tracks they've ever produced. This album is definitely the most Anthoney Keidis has ever Anthoney Keidis-ed

Honestly, I think Dream Canteen is the better of the two double album releases. UL has its stand out moments, but I feel like Dream Canteen is an album many Chili Pepper fans will be coming back to again and again. I know I will.
Eh I don't know about that, I think I listened to UL about 20 times fully before it started to get old, DC.. I can't stand Tippa already and it's been 10 or so times, some songs hit hard like Tippa then get old quick, it's a lot of new material that I'm still going through. Then you have Ma Cigarette that you either love or hate depending on your mood (and then remind yourself it's basically Pokerface).
I actually was very underwhelmed upon first listen. Thought Anthony’s vocals dragged it down, and some of the songs felt repetitive. But after listening to it about 10 times, it’s honestly up there with some of the chilli’s best work. This thing grows on you. The experimentation and creativity is incredible!
Question is, how many times should we have to listen to an album before giving up and deciding that we just don't like it that much? Just asking because I'm sure a lot of fans would've given up before their 10th listen of the album
Ya know I felt the same way. It was underwhelming and a little too predictable at times. I’ve only listened to it twice, so I’m excited to give it a listen a couple more times to give it an honest shot. The comment above mine makes a good point though, I don’t want to try too hard to make this album work. I have a feeling I’ll end up just not liking it overall.
Man Jay z put it best how can you listen to someone's art that they put months or years into once or twice then put a score on it? You need to really marinate in it before you make something so definitive as giving it a number score
I really liked this one better than Unlimited Love tbh. Way more consistent, especially in the second half. Sure, there aren't nearly as many poppy hooks as per usual, but it feels like an album of really good deep cuts to me.
I'm with you on this, there's something there but it's not immediately evident. Yeah cigarette hated it but like it now. Bela.... I don't know. Afterlife yeah. I actually like the wierd ballad thing with the vocal. (Also loved not the one)
Have you ever heard the bonus track, "The Shape I'm Takin'"? I love it so much I'm shocked it didn't make the album, it basically has everything I'd want out of a Chili Peppers song, especially from Frusciante!
I haven’t finished the album yet but so far I’m digging it. Peace and Love is my favorite so far perfect for taking an edible and chilling out in a state of euphoria.
This is another brilliant record by RHCP. Great review. Some wonderful input. A few comments on the album from me; I would LOVE an instrumental version of “My Cigarette”. Way too much of the same thing lyrically on that one. “Eddie” really gets me emotional. I have been moved to tears several times. A very touching tune. Hits me in the soul. The album takes multiple listens and time to soak in, but this one is a win for me. Lifelong old man of a fan here. 4/5
The fact that we're not totally sure if Anthony is singing about a dog in "Bella" is Anthony's lyric writing in a nutshell 😂 For real though, this album is a blast, I was bracing myself after I heard "Tippa My Tongue" but "Eddie" was a huge pick me up in comparison, and the album itself pleasantly surprised me. A real gem for the band in my opinion.
I went to a RHCP concert two months ago and found out that they would drop a second album during the concert. We know they dropped an album today, and I think this album’s definitely something lol
@@skip_town oh nevermind then. It was Haim and Thundercat. The Denver show was the first time they announced the album. It was a huge surprise to show up to the Stadium and see "New Album out Oct 14th" plastered literally everywhere in the stadium
I think Copperbelly and reach out are both great examples of the chili peppers expanding on their classic sound but with more emphasis in certain areas which I really enjoy. Reach out being more head banging and rocky and copperbelly with a unique melodic vocal progression. Love the album overall
I pretty much agree with everything this gentleman said. The first half is a banger. Second half is harder to listen to. If the Peppers had decided to make an album with the 17 best tracks between these two albums, they’d have made an album as good as BSSM, Californication, and By The Way. This core lineup is a force.

I had a dog named Bella and that song smacks imo! I think I hear tones of the song off the empyrean dark/light within the song as well. John’s solo albums are some of my favorite albums and I think his influence on the band is always a beautiful thing, so happy he’s back and the band is grooving!!
I love how diverse this album is. It really does slightly remind me of BTW. I tried getting into Unlimited Love multiple times but besides Black Summer I found the record to be mostly boring. Dream Canteen is more or less the Pepper's comeback I was hoping for. 🙂
Same here. Unlimited Love sounds like a completely different band and I hate it haha. This album is arguable the most “diverse and experimental” Chili Peppers record out there but at the same time very familiar. A lot of the guitar sounds and drum machines sound straight off a Frusciante record and I love it.
Fleas sound on UL and ROTDC is truly stellar and as good as ever, dare I say better and more refined. Yes, you hear his trademark riffs and nuances interjected throughout. But there is new sound and new interpretation. In this day and age of garbage music, UL and ROTDC are true gems.

I feel it has more creativity behind it and many of the songs get better with repeated listens. Whilst it’s not their best album, I’m really quite pleased with this release.
Let it snow is so hauntingly beautiful! Some of these songs are amazing and this year has been a true wonder for RHCP fans! There's just one thing bugging me... Why are 17 song albums called double albums these days?! 14 to 17 songs should be the norm (it used to be, anyway). When they announced ROTDC as a double album I was expecting something like 24 to 28 songs (like Stadium Arcadium). I'm not exactly complaining, it's still 34 new songs in a year by my favorite band. I'm just confused that 17 songs passes as a double album.
One of the beat albums I've heard in many many years. Eddie is legendary. Fake as fuck is fucking awesome. Reach out? Epic. Tippa my tongue is funky wild. My cigarette is a fun mix up
Return Of The Dream Canteen definitely feels like more of a grower. I didn't like LALALALA the first few listens through but it's certainly a grower, it's Keidis leading with Vocals and the horn bits really come through.
I am sorry I am really late but for a variety of reasons, I didn't get this album until just today... and I've been through 3/4 of the album and I can tell it is much better than Unlimited Love even on a first listen... feels more variety in sounds. This should've been the album to return the announcement of Frusciante's return
I absolutely adored listening to this album for the first time. Having John back is pleasure for my ears (Josh was great too, I just think John fits the band better). Tippa My Tongue was my personal favourite, although Edie, wow, that was phenomenal.
I really like 1975s new record miles better than notes on a conditional form. Even though I think there is a lot of repetition in the songs which got annoying
Same feelings here. Without 3 or 4 songs the album could be better, but that always has been an issue with their records. And Rubin should be there to solve it, but he's been with the band for so many years that I think he's lost his own perspective since early 00's. The record does sounds really good, but they should try to work with Greg Fidelman as a producer. Fidelman already worked with them on I'm With You but as a engineer. Greetings from Colombia. 🇨🇴
It is definitely a very different album with some unique highlights. At first listen it sounded very repetitive. Eddie is a great song and probably the best on the album. Unlimited Love was much better to me.
It was far from an unenjoyable listen but this album hasn't grabbed me yet. I thought both pre-released songs were solid, but nothing amazing, and for me, a 17 track album is bound to have filler, but this felt like it had a bit too much. Also I'm struggling to see this album as particularly 'experimental' or a 'curveball' besides a few tracks being heavy on drum machines and synthesisers, plus a couple of saxophone moments. Josh Klinghoffer said he struggled to push the band forward, but I think the Getaway was quite a bit of a sonic shift, and a very good one too. But then again, I struggled to get into that album for years until this year when I really fell in love with it, so who knows if the same will happen with ROTDC. Still though, I'd say By The Way is more experimental than this.
I wasn't a huge fan of Unlimited Love, and I'm not really a diehard RHCP fan at all. But as a diehard VH fan, Eddie absolutely hooked me. This is my favorite Peppers record in a long, long time.
Awesome. Had no idea this existed until now. Lifelong rhcp fan. They can do no wrong in my book. Frusciante is my favorite guitar player. Love his solo work with Josh. It would be great to hear another collaboration between them. Wonder how new these songs are or if John had written some before reuniting. Those klinghoffer albums were growers. Anything Frusciante does is a show-er. His understanding of the fretboard in terms of chord progressions, rhythm and melody is pretty untouchable in my opinion. His vocal harmonies are another layer that often goes overlooked. I’d love to hear them expand their sound into other genres. Especially prog as they kinda did with the very, very underrated One Hot Minute. Thanks for informing me of the new album and giving it an honest review rather than jumping on the bandwagon of talking smack on this incredibly gifted group of musicians/songwriters that have such amazing chemistry together. Sorry about writing a novel here.
@@jasonm9112 I'm glad to help people discover awesome music! Imo they're one of the most unique rock bands in decades, with the way they incorporate dubstep into the metal formula
I really enjoyed it, I think the fact that it had a sort of roller-coaster of a track listing, where it was sonically, melodicly and rhythmically different;it took a couple listens to settle in to the groove but then boom! Can't pin point THE track, but a couple faves would be Carry Me Home, Tippa My Tounge(the chorus ooo) Peace&Love, Drummer Boy and Roulette. The mix of the album should sound identical to Unlimited Love. It was the same recording session, and also recorded and mixed by Rick Rubin (which is why Unlimited Love sounded SO GOOD). I agree with you about Anthony’s lyrics lol.
I really agree with your review!! I think they did something new and challenged themselves. I did like lalalalalla though, it had something about it, idk
RHCP are one of my favorite bands. That being said, their new stuff is just pretty underwhelming. Kiedis especially, but overall, its just reiterations stadium arcadium, but worse. I'm glad they're enjoying themselves though.
They should’ve picked the best songs from this album and the best songs from the last album to make a great album, instead of two everage ones with a load of filler songs.
Kinda disagree with you’re thoughts on specific songs but agree that the overall album is great! Bella and my cigarette are the best songs on the album.
Other than Eddie and Tippa My Tongue, Bella and The Drummer are two extreme bangers in my book. Definitely agree with most of your points. Good review! I don’t think Bella is about a dog though.

This is going to be a great review
What a time to be alive! Banger after banger after banger after banger!
Better this, Blink, Nothing More, and the 1975 all releasing some pretty great stuff today was a good day for music
I wasn't a huge fan of Unlimited Love, and I'm not really a diehard RHCP fan at all. But as a diehard VH fan, Eddie absolutely hooked me. This is my favorite Peppers record in a long, long time.
U.l took a bit but I started loving it
This album is really awesome... I actually sat and listened today and fell in love with these songs more so.... and lalalalalala is an amazing track
I like it much better than the previous one.
His understanding of the fretboard in terms of chord progressions, rhythm and melody
is pretty untouchable in my opinion. His vocal harmonies are
another layer that often goes overlooked.
I’d love to hear them expand their sound into other genres. Especially prog as they kinda did with the
very, very underrated One Hot Minute.
Thanks for informing me of the new album and giving it an honest review rather than
jumping on the bandwagon of talking smack on this incredibly gifted group of
musicians/songwriters that have such amazing chemistry together.
Sorry about writing a novel here.
In case you haven't heard, Nothing More also came out with a new album, and it's amazing! You should totally give it a go
Thanks for saying, I will!
I just checked them out…pretty good
Never heard of the band told I read your comment nothing more is really good ! I'm so glad I saw your comment
Funnily enough though, I actually really love LaLaLaLaLaLaLaLa🤔😂) really loved the melody and the understatement of it, but 🤷♂️thanks for your review, I found it actually spot on as a review and agreed with how you felt they sounded hungry and willing to try new things;some worked, some not so much💯hoping they spoil us again with another tour🤞
Love the album, my top 5 at the moment have to be Bella, Fake as fuck, Eddie, Tippah my tongue, and carry me home
Bella, Eddie, Tippa My Tongue, Roulette are some of mine
Great mixing on this album. It sounds different kinds colorful
This album is brilliant. For me (a huge fan) It is up there next to Californication.
bro go to bed and play fortnite
@@christianronga9315 can't..too busy wid ur mom 🤗
RHCP are one of my favorite bands. That being said, their new stuff is just pretty underwhelming. Kiedis especially, but overall, its just reiterations stadium arcadium, but worse. I'm glad they're enjoying themselves though.
@andrewwmessina. Also personally Fake as Fu@k might be my favorite so far. Loved the review Jon!
Can you review The Gang's All Here by Skid Row next?
They should’ve picked the best songs from this album and the best songs from the last album to make a great album, instead of two everage ones with a load of filler songs.
Kinda disagree with you’re thoughts on specific songs but agree that the overall album is great! Bella and my cigarette are the best songs on the album.
How did you not mention fake as fuck? It’s amazing
I listed it as my favorite track!!!
Other than Eddie and Tippa My Tongue, Bella and The Drummer are two extreme bangers in my book. Definitely agree with most of your points. Good review!
I don’t think Bella is about a dog though.
OMG on first listen i could hear so much more Frusciante than on UL. Roulette & Peace and Love were immediate favorites for me.
Nice review! Any chance you’re going to review the new Broken Bells album?
The Drummer My Ciggarette and In the Snow I enjoyed a lot.
