Spooky Upcycled Treasures || Turning Thriftfinds into Dark Academia Art
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 вер 2023
- I needed some less-than-traditional artwork to go along with my mural wall, so after a trip to the thrift store, I came home with inspiration and materials to fulfill this dream. In the vein of Dark Academia, apothecary, gothic decor, these wall hangings are the perfect accent to my accent wall.
I also throw in a quick thrift haul if that's your jam.

Yes to Rachel Maksy fanclub! Who isn't aspiring to be her? Your frames turned out amazing. I especially like the rat one because it just looks unexpected and super interesting. I also love the little terrarium with the teeny tiny dragon. So cuuuute!
Thank you so much! The dragon was a last minute find in a drawer and I knew it HAD to be included!
Rachel is one of those people who would definitely be overjoyed you had an idea similar to hers. You can just tell there is no ego to her where she thinks she owns every idea she comes up with. And, plus, you totally made yours your own. And I am inspired by you both. ❤❤
First time viewer 🎉As a stay at home mom for the last 15 yrs, Goodwill gave me the chance to get back in the workforce. It is the perfect position for me right now. I actually get paid to go to my favorite place! I am actually excited and happy to go to work everyday! On my days off I can't wait to get back to work! Feeling VERY VERY BLESSED 🙏🏽❤️😌
I am in spooky mode 24/7. Anytime I go shopping, no matter what the season, I tend to look at things & think "how can I make this spooky?" As for the figurines you pulled of the pictures, I would totally repaint them with red eyes & make them demonic, or zombies...or demonic zombies!
You are a joy to watch. Your subtle humor is priceless.
Oh please!! You go girl! I’ve seen these the last several years. In stores, all over YT, Pinterest, etc. Everyone is inspired by everyone. An influencer has done their job if the influenced you anyway. I even did these with butterflies 6 moths ago. Inspired ideas with our own twist is what we do. Thank you for a cool, inspiring video.👍🦋❤️ Also- love your painted wall!!
I'm definitely easily influenced by things like this, so I suppose I should just own it and be happy with the new ideas!
Don’t fret, it’s that time of the year and all crafters will be either spooky or cutesy….😂. Items looked great and always love a thrift haul that turns into new unplannned projects
The Spider was the BEST!!... ✌️❤️😎👍👍
Loooove your personality, this was such a fun project!! Xx
The red cruet is from the 70’s Avon Cranberry Glass series. There were drinking glasses and dinner plates as well as other pieces. My mom already collected a type of art glass so we never bought any of it, but it is pretty.
3:06 I have my mom’s Avon cruet! It is currently in my “vampire blood” vignette on my bathroom counter 😊
Those were mid-century Italian Empire Art 3-D wall plaques. They can fetch a good bit of money.
Love all 4 projects, but the squeaky cloche is my favorite. Very nice!
Omg the Avon bottle!!!! I saw a couple at my thrift store but they weren’t THAT color!!! Great find!
Love this, beautiful, I am the creepy Halloween person too. Great job!
Love the ideas. I will use them. You should glue a dollar store candlestick to the dome thing you made to elevate it since you said you want one on a pedestal.
So much fun! Love your projects, humor, commentary and cool results. Also-great orange jumper!
Looks cool! An idea: you can hot glue a low candlestick from the thrift store/dollar store to the bottom of your cloche to make a pedestal
Love this idea!! I'll have to look around for one. Thanks for the idea!
I love videos like this! Rachel Maksy is one of my faves, too! But I love things where you take thrifted things and make them spooky...we do some spooky all year long in our house so spooky is my favorite!
Just found your channel. You are hilarious. I laughed out loud even while I’m sick and in pain now, you’re that funny! And love the crafts and the just get it done attitude. New sub
I recognised the red Avon bottle!! I have 2 that I inherited from my Grandmother after she passed. I love them, they’re so cute. ❤ I love the “taxidermy” wall hangings!! That’s something I’ve always wanted to do so it’s very exciting to watch!!
I love how all of these turned out - I think my fave was the mouse/rat!! ❤
You are delightful! So happy your video popped up in my feed. Never heard of Ko-fi, but will 100% check it out. I’ve been looking for a good place to sell my creations.
Same! I got back from my annual antiquing market with a gorgeous thrifted antique butterfly in a bubble glass frame so I can build out my inspiration wall. It is uncanny how we are all finding these items so close together.
Ooh that sounds so neat!!!
My grandmother had that Avon Set, so cool to see this. I actually remember the smell out of those bottles. One was like a bath oil
I love them! I am a year round, "everyday is Halloween" girl. I definitely indulge in the "yay Fall! Pumpkins & cider!" vibe in mid Aug thru September... Before descending into full on Super Spooky mode lol
You did an awesome job don't sell yourself short. ❤ amazing job
For the cloach you can glue it on top of a candle stick to make it be in a pedestal
New Subbie here And Yes You nailed it! Heck yeah 💯 Love Your channel
I love that you are rocking a prison jumpsuit!
I think they all look great but the spider is really awesome with the webbing. I got one of the little dome thingies but hadn’t decided what to do with it yet. Now I know exactly what I’m going to do with it!!!
So cool. Love them all
Pumpkin shape pockets for the jumpsuit? Cute! The framed images and domes very inspiring. Well done. Tip- if you put spray foam into the hollows of the mouse and horse them screw in from the back to secure after dry and trimmed.
Spray foam is such a great idea!! The Pegasus just fell off today and I was stumped for how to reattach it better. This is perfect!
Very creative very loved everything!!!!
Wow, I love the pegasus one. What a cool idea.
Thank you!
Really liked the cloche with the dragon - it's a nice dragon. You could get a chunky based candleholder and attach it to that if you want it on a pedestal. I recently got a glass dome that was over an ugly clock at the thrift shop, happened to have a Chinese wood stand that it fit on perfectly, now I need a cool candle base. Love the Indian brass vase and I liked the rat a lot. All together the wall looks awesome. Thanks for the inspirations!
I got a base for it finally!! I'll have to test it out and post for everyone to see.
Most impressive...love all the details!
They all look fantastic!! 😱. Really creepy!! 🎃. The spider and the rat are my favorites!!
I think I agree! The rat just makes me smile every time I look at it
So Cool! Brilliant idea
You are my favorite UA-camr!!
Wow, thanks! That means a lot to me!
This turned out so cute! Love them. Great job.
I think they are perfect and your great!
Love love love the wall. Subscribed and can’t wait to see more of your videos.
Yay! Thank you!
This is the first time I've seen a video from you and I absolutely love it! And you! Please please do more videos! Your more unique than you think!
I DO recognize that bottle/collection. My Grandparents had this dish set at their wedding. I now have most of it in my cupboard. They made these fancy bath products, they made dishes, and they probably made other stuff too. They're beautiful and kind of rare, even though they're super thick and while made with time it gets harder and harder to find these glass collections because they get broken over the years. The pieces of my grandparents wedding set that had gotten broken over the years, I have been working on replacing piece by piece at thrift, antique and vintage stores. It is a labor of love, because they can be pricey and often I find a single piece like this that you've found.
I don't have a single piece of the bath collection and have only seen this one, one other time so bravo!! 👏👏👏
Collecting these is a labor of love for me. I also have small collections of depression glass, uranium glass and a couple of misc other glass collections and I am looking for a used, reasonably priced large vintage curio cabinet to house them, along with my specimen collection, and other curiosities. I absolutely love your bath oil container, you could use it for so many things. It is beautiful, and if you clean it well, I'm pretty sure that the glass itself is safe even for food, unlike my uranium glass, lol, just fyi. 😊
Ps-- the taxidermy doesn't sound weird, it sounds BRILLIANT! The original people on it was no dice for me. Taxidermy I can get behind. I have a couple of dry specimens of large and medium horseshoe crabs, and up close, those things look like face huggers from alien!! They are so.... Alien! Looking! And I've been wondering how to display them... I think you just gave me an awesome idea! I hope eventually I can find two round paintings like what you found. That would look amazing! Thank you!?!
Loved ALL these projects 🖤🖤🖤🖤
Love your work! Totally doesn't feel copied, we're all in the spooky mood :D I am so obsessed with your frame compositions: the animals popping out of the frame like they're coming out of the abyss, the color pops of greenery, and all the trinkets adding interest! Hell yeah
Wow I just discovered literally today Dark Acadamia Art. I am blown away by how your items turned out. I love all of it. I think I might give this a try myself. Thank you so much for sharing your artwork with us.
Just be careful! I find myself wanting to 'spookify' everything now. It's a little addictive!
Yes!!! Love me some cape cod Ruby glass!! 🖤
I love it all. I have hopes for all the crap my family has given me. Thank you, and I'm your newest fan.
UA-cam suggested this video and I subbed halfway through. Your sense of humor is so relatable and your mural/gallery wall is badass!
Yesssss, these turned out great! Love it 🤩 fantatic vibes too
Thank you so much 🤗
@@KatieMakesStuff very welcome :D
Really cool, well done xx
Nicely done & great ideas❣️👍
Your intro perfectly described so many of my days. 🤣 Just that intro got me to subscribe.
Yay! Thank you!
I have the candy dish with lid and box from Avon's Cape Cod cranberry glass collection that matches the cruet that you have. I love cranberry and especially amber glass.
Cool vid! Love the projects! And the music you chose! I bet you like Jethro Tull! I was expecting Ian Anderson to start singing!
New Sub here, love this and anytime you need to get rid of pumpkins, throw 'em my way😂, I bought 6 last year, baked some for dinner, scooped and pureed for home made pies/breads and save seeds to plant, went to GW and other thrift store 3 days in a row, goodness got projects and loving your ideas- have a great rest of the day!
First, welcome!! Second, you can have ALL of the pumpkin, but you may have to share it with my pups. They love it too 🤣
This is pretty dope. Ima have to try and make something similar 🖤
That vintage Avon bottle- I have that same style- with 20 or more pieces.
Yes!! The fact that Rachel might have done it first makes no difference since you made it your own a lot of other creators have as well so so long as you had fun and it came up beautiful that's the important part. My mother has been asking to get together and do some crafts where I can guide her but not do the things for her since I am a very experienced artist in crafter and seamstress and all of those things. And I firmly believe that this project will be perfect for us to do together so thank you so much for this! You have earned my follow LOL
Also I will be following you on my proper account motherhemcreations, when I finally get access to it I had a phone issue and had to change my phone number and so couldn't access it but now that I have a new phone I'll be able to LOL I just realized my username basically look like a bot LOL
This sounds like so much fun!! Great bonding time with your mom!
This was so fun! I think I’m going to have to ~finally pick some paintings from my Savers to upcycle.
It's so stupidly fun! I may need to do a bunch more just because I love them!
Good job on all of it!!
Love your attitude
Thank you, You absolutely Made My Day 😍🙏💖💖💖!!
Way to call that out in your video and tag the creator. Classy act! UA-cam DIY done right! :) I think this is fantastic! :) Can't wait to spook-a-fy everything!
Hi, Katie! Just found you and so glad I did! I shall binge your previous videos, forthwith! You deserve massive viewership, in my opinion... funny, personable, disarming and so crazy talented! Love your attention to detail. Rachel IS amazing, but you bring your own, amazing spin to creative projects. Love that cloche! Thank you for your terrific content. - a fellow spooky Halloween queen
I can't tell you how much this comment shifted my day. I was struggling pretty hard and your kind words floored me. Thank you and I'm so glad you found me!
Very cool!
How fun. Subscribed. Can’t wait to do a deep dive into your videos 😂
Oh boy! What a trip that'll be, I'm sure 🤣
I'm not even into the fall creepy mood but I still love what you created!!!🖤🖤🖤😊
Thank you!!
Yes! Thats happened, u get an idea and someone already made it 😮
I like your creations very much. Happy Halloween from a Halloween Queen!
HTHELL did you "find" me???? 🌞 thank you UNIVERSE !!!
Amerykanie niszczą wszystko co piękne...babo zniszczyć takie piękne obrazki ,toż to grzech!
Omg I’m so excited I found you!! First time watching and you are my new favorite human! I love your creative style and you are so much fun! 🐦⬛🐦⬛🍂🍂🎃🎃
Holy cow, thank you!!! I'm excited to get even more done in the coming weeks!
I love to laugh so that means I love you! I’m def digging the spooky vibe and academia decor, it’s so fun and innovative. Love what your bringing here, not a sower (seamstress) kinda gal 😝but someday I might try it lol. 🤣 New sub ❤😁
so cute!!!! you did a great job! Rachel's channel is my favorite toooooo!!! your channel also a new favorite
Thank you so much 🤗
New subbie and fellow crafter and fellow Halloween queen & youtuber and YES how I know that feeling of dang it someone beat me too it! But everyone has a different way of creating and we are after all influencers and inspire others so sure go ahead and go for it!!! I am now inspired to create spooky dark academia projects for Halloween!
Yay! I hope your creations come out spook-tacular! 🤣
So cool
Leather napkin rings would be awesome 😊
I think so too!
When it comes to Rachel Macksy, no one is judging you as great minds think alike.
Remember this... Anyone can simply glue a spider to a plaque. But in the end, it's all about " Creating the Vignette", that sets us apart. 😉😊❤
I just found your channel. You're my type of person. 🤷♀️You had me cracking up. 😂
Just found your channel! UA-cam recommendations coming in for the win! 🖤🍂😊
Love the trophy head frame, very Halloween! I think I would have embroidered some moths for them which wouldn’t be nearly as fun xx
I don't know...that seems really dang fun (for those that like embroidery)! Christine McConnell did some spooky scarecrow embroidery that was pretty awesome
New subscriber here. Loved these makes. Looking forward to watching more of your content.
Awesome! Thank you!
Love it! (And OWN your talent: You are enough.)
Thank you so much! That really means a lot to me!
beautiful❤
For the figures you pulled off the frames...I'd make them into zombies! 🧟♀Think like "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies."
OMG! I'm already behind for National Sewing Month! 🤯
ME TOO!! I can't believe I missed the newsletter! 😩
Love how it looks like the rat chewed it's way into the frame!
Well, Rachel should be thanking you! Because little old me clicks on everyone of your videos and only about half of hers. I'm now going to go find her version ....
Well, that is not a compliment I was expecting, so to say I'm floored would be an understatement!
While I love Rachel Maksy "Dark Academia Aesthetic" is not her original idea I have been into this style for 20 years it just happens to be commercially or mainstream popular right now! All great minds think alike and fools seldom differ! Two different people can have separate independent ideas at the same time for a similar thing...that is not plagiarism! But even if you happen to be inspired by her or anyone else for that matter is how the creative process works as everyone brings their own vision to a project for content creation! I subscribed!
I have that vintage Avon jug
I have a short lunch period and it's a cruddy week already (even though it's Monday) so this was just a perfect video to watch while I ate a quick lunch. Thanks for the inspiration! I see exactly why YT decided to show me your account -- Goodwill, DIY and Halloween makes. ❤
I'm sorry your Monday was cruddy; hopefully it got a little better? Regardless, I'm so glad you're here!
Spooky Halloween Queen here...and crafter. I just found your channel and I already love it! I think that vase is brass. And yes, that is a Pegasus. I would transform those "country figures" into some dark and disturbing...vampires, zombies, etc... Future DIY?
Amazing!
Thank you!
Just found your channel. You did an amazing job. I’m one of those pumpkin spice everything girls but know watching all kind of diys helps to inspire me. I’m excited to watch your videos. I’m also a lifelong seamstress but don’t do it anymore but looking forward to teaching my granddaughter. Hope you have a great weekend 💕
Thank you so much! Fall needs PSL people AND Halloween queens for the 🍂magic🍂 to happen! So glad you're here!
@@KatieMakesStuff 💕💕💕
I like the spider one
I am 100% a Spooky Halloween Chick! ❤😊
Love them, plus, love your energy, new sub
Yay! Thank you!
First video, new sub. The glass bottle from Avon is from the 1876 Cape Cod, Ruby Red collection. My favorite is the decanter and wine glasses
Now that I have one, I'm definitely on the lookout for more!
