    Nice simple coop. It’s clean. Here in California people build stupid tiny coops with the goal of not having to walk into the coop to get eggs. However I feel like we need to walk in there and look at them. Plus if the coop is uncomfortable to be in we won’t go in to clean or handle them.

    Thanks. I like the video. I thought about buying a coop and run from Tractor Supply, but this may be the ticket. As a young boy I remember our coop was a thrown together 8X8 building with pieces of various wood and tobacco sticks nailed together for roosts. We had a couple of old crates for nesting boxes. We always had eggs, so just goes to show you nothing fancy is needed.

      Hello Mr Winston, welcome to the channel and our community sir!! Yes sir, I can identify with that, my first coop was an old tractor shed. Then I found out a good friend had tons of old reclaimed wood laying around that he was giving away so I built the coop I'm now using. I have some boards that need to be replaced but considering I've basically done no maintenance on this coop in the last 10 years, reckon I done good lol!! Thank ya for watching sir, have a good Thursday!! Dan

    Nice coop! If you'd add wood chips, hay/straw, lawn clippings, weeds to the floor, your chickens would have a ball and make loads of compost for you. I've been dumping wheelbarrows full of wood chips and they scratch and scratch and in a few weeks, I have beautiful compost. I also dumped a few loads of dirty straw bedding from my duck house and the chickens had a ball cleaning up all the old feed the ducks had spilled. Happy hens!

    I grow grass inside my coop. Cover with hardware clothes so they cant scratch it. The grass will grow out and they feed on it. And maybe add a light for winter time. They will lay. Mine lay year round.

    Do you have any problems with digging predators? Do you think it'll be better to have a walk in coop or a waist high coop? I have a coop left by previous owners it's probably like 5 ft tall and 6 ft long I was going to just rebuild but I kind of want a walk in coop?

      Hello Mr Joe and welcome to my channel sir, glad to have ya!! No sir, I don't get a lot of cold weather here in the Sip, I should say that it has gotten down into the teens before but not for a long period of time!! The hens will free range during the day and as the sun goes down, they'll find their way back to the coop to roost, I leave the door open for them, do a head count, then lock them in the coop till the following day!! You may want to get a predator apron around your coup. I can see right next to your door a small critter was trying to dig under to get inside. make it at least 2 feet from the bottom wood out. That will go a LONG way in keeping critters out of your coup.

    • @HomeInTheSticks
      @HomeInTheSticks  6 років тому +1

      Hello there MrCougar214 and welcome to my channel!! The hole that you see in front the door is actually soil erosion from the rain. The coop was built on the bottom side of a terrace and when it rains, the coop floods some. I have those holes around the whole coop and I actually back fill in those spots with red dirt when I can. I haven't had any predator problems as of late but I do have to watch the hens when they free range outside the coop, plenty of hawks over here!! I thank ya for watching and do come back and visit when ya can!! Dan

      I live in North Carolina and we have tons of hawks too. I'm going to be getting into getting my own chickens for the eggs as soon as i have the money to invest into it(building coups, etc. cost a little bit of money). But my coup is going to be built under a tree in my back yard that is behind my old pool house. It's all in the back corner of my yard so it will work out nicely. Once I get all the chicken wire/hardware cloth up around everything, I will have my coup and run all closed in. And the best part is I won't have to cut the grass back there anymore! Yah, go me!......lol

      Ya got that right, them chickens will scratch it down to the dirt!! Chicken are a wonderful thing to have around the home place if ya have the space, time and money. I lucked out as my entire coop is built from reclaimed wood!! Dan

    • @MrCougar214
      @MrCougar214 6 років тому

      I have a lot of random wood laying around in my work shop. Probably not enough to build a complete coup but I can manage as there are so many different designs for chicken coups. The only thing that's gonna sting a little is having to buy that chicken wire. it's not that cheap for the amount you get. I can probably look around for some freebies also. My house sits on nearly 1 acre of land that is all fenced in so that makes it even easier to keep predators out. Another great part of having chickens is they will make compost for you providing you throw the proper stuff in the run. That compost will be going to my gardens for fruit and veggie production. I live in the city(or what's considered the city here) so I am limited to only 10 birds and no other livestock. But for what I can have, I will be making the most of it. My wife and I are tired of paying so much for produce and with 3 kids to feed, our own garden and chickens is going to go a LONG way to savings and healthy. I'm just really glad there are people like you here on youtube to show others what to do and how to do it. It makes this process so much easier.
