    We've just received 25 chicks to grow out as broilers, now it's time to house them all! We've chosen a minimalist A-frame design to keep things simple and costs low. Using reclaimed and salvaged materials, see how we built this entire chicken coop for under $50.
    What do you think of this A-frame chicken run design? How does it compare to our other full size coop built for our laying hens? Share your thoughts in the comments!

      It was the only thing we had that was big enough to fit that many chicks 😂 Hosed it off afterwards and we're ready for the next camping trip now too 😄

    Thank you for showing how you cut the metal roofing! I have searched for days to find this type of installation video! Great video and excellent build!!

      Thanks so much, I'm glad it was helpful! Definitely pick up a few cutting wheels from the hardware store, they wear out quite quickly on this metal roofing material. Good luck with your build!

      Yes!!! I aquired some metal roofing and was going to build according to the sheet size.... but seeing how you cut it is making me rethink my options... btw i paid around $6 a sheet for my repurposed metal roofing. Lol sooo jealous u got urs for free. Lucky!

      Ahh thanks for the kind words! It was a pretty under-utilized spot on our property so I think we made the most of it. Going into fall/winter as well, the sun exposure shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for checking it out!

    Chicks in a tent 😅 genius that alone earned the subscribe.
    I'm just toying with cheap brooder ideas for a batch of Guinea fowl. Genius idea perfect timing for me, now where's that old tent I'll never camp in again. Brilliant wow thanks for sharing this weeks eureka moment. New subscriber from southern Europe. Have a great day 🎉

      Haha glad that was helpful for you! We've used old appliance boxes in the past, sometimes multiple taped together for larger spaces. It all depends on what you have available!

    Looks good are you going to add a run to it so they can be outside in the day?

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  Рік тому +4

      Thanks so much! Yes, I've added an outdoor fenced run that the chickens can explore during the day, and we also let them free range quite regularly when the weather is nice. They appreciate the extra space outside the coop and enjoy foraging for yummy eats.

    i was looking at your other coop, but i think i may just build this one. would it be good for eggs?

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  Рік тому +1

      This one could definitely still work for laying hens, but you'll need to incorporate some sort of nesting boxes for them to lay their eggs in. It wouldn't be hard to add, maybe along the back wall, but definitely a consideration.
      I have a video on the nesting boxes here:
      ua-cam.com/video/9Do7OVLUeB8/v-deo.html
      One other thing to add would be roosting bars for the chickens to sleep on. These could easily be run across from the "rafters" of the a-frame.
      Good luck!

    Could this also be used as a tractor? Or is it too heavy?

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  Рік тому +1

      At these dimensions, it's a bit too big/heavy to move around like a tractor. Maybe a scaled down version, using plastic or polycarbonate sheet roofing instead of metal, could be movable.

      For 10 bucks, it can't be beat, so nothing lol...If you can get metal for free, invest in a wire welder, a new world will open up for you, super easy to use, you will be welding in 10 minutes

      Unfortunately I don't. The design was mostly dictated by what I had on hand. The footprint itself is 8' x 6' if that's helpful.

    You may need a floor to keep dogs and foxes from digging under.

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  Рік тому +1

      I buried wire underneath the perimeter and that seemed to be sufficient. Luckily no foxes here and the property is fenced to keep out unwanted dogs.

    A hint take one long piece of metal roofing uncut late long ways from Eve to Eve then bend down and nail it in place so you get no leaks I'm very top on the top part the very center longways so it covers the entire building very top make sure to make it your last piece you put up use Hot tar to seal it

    • @Slowsteading

      Yep, it's staying in place where it is.

  • @wanhung8251
    @wanhung8251 Рік тому

    A better way to do that is to put yeah you finally did it you put the boards together and you cut the angle where they're propped up against each other though the long boards the ones that make the at the avo longest boards you know he finally did it you were cross them so but you got there there you go

  • @wanhung8251
    @wanhung8251 Рік тому

    You overlap the sides and seal it with tar.

    I'm confused are you making a house for chickens or weed

  • @wanhung8251
    @wanhung8251 Рік тому

    And looking at it you didn't do it right it's going to leak all over the place

    • @Slowsteading
      @Slowsteading  Рік тому +1

      The structure itself was quite watertight, leaks were not an issue. Plus it was an outdoor chicken coop, so 100% water tight was never the goal nor a necessity.
