@@monroehillfarm7423 I thought their "Producer's Pride Universal Poultry Pen, 8 ft. x 8 ft., CR0808 " was it. Still, can't find the coop part of your set up. I guess they quit offering it.
John RossStar Mine was a 10’ x 10’ run. Looks like they did stop carrying the coop. You could use any coop though and it will go up to the run. Just line up the coop with the run and cut out the wires where the coop meets the run to create an opening.

Just got one 8x8' and did one more step. remove all rubber end caps and the roof panel joint pipes and spray in great stuff foam sealer to keep water out of the pipes. Replace the caps and joints before the foam dries! Much easier to do BEFORE assembly. I do the same thing on hunting stands after they froze with water in them and split. 3 month old stand ruined from rust and splits from ice. Luckily no one fell when it broke. Always climb with a safety rope!!! saved my Life. Foam works great and adds very little weight and it is closed cell foam that wont absorb water and will probably triple the life of the unit.
I bought this same set up! I love it! I did do some extra caulking for drafts and removed the windows for ventilation and added small awnings to keep rain out!
If this was mine I would just plan on putting hardware cloth over the rest of the run and top, put a wire on those bottom latches because if you have raccoons they will open those, they are smart critters! I've learned that the hard way.
just purchased one and appreciate the video! I think im gonna lock them up at night and leave out the extra work on the fence. Your attention to detail is spot on, love your watering system too! Thanks again for the run through and advice!
Great coop. My only concerns are minks and weasels. They can easily climb and squeeze through the openings on the top. I know this from bitter experience! Good luck.
Instead of those plastic bins in the coop, I saw a guy that used Weather-Tech Floor mats that he had from an old pick-up. It fit perfectly and he could pull the whole thing out to clean it off. It also saves the wood floor from moisture (chicken poop).
I purchased the same chicken yard and ended up using it not for my chickens but as a kennel play yard for my standard poodle puppyl. Always amazes me these companies sell products for pets and they themselves are not animal savy. You did a good job. For me its back to the drawing board.
Anything in the weasel family will definitely make it through those fence squares. I'd run the same wire mess all the way to the top. Obviously you are not going to move this coop. Some prefer to move it regularly to keep the smells down.
I would highly recommend putting more hardware cloth on the upper portion of the pin - racons are a really cagey and snakes! You have done a great job!
I'm setting up the exact same chicken coop right now. We have a lot of fruit trees, so a lot of rodents. I am looking to implement some sort of feeder that can be closed up at night. As for water, I have found that fresh water every couple days is better than a water feeder that lasts a long time. I grow probiotics in the water and it keeps the chickens SUPER healthy.
Thanks for including the link to the roof cover, it wasn't easy to find on their website! (and thanks for the video, it helped us decide on getting the coop).
I use a retriever 5x10 dog kennel from TSC. I used hardware cloth on bottom to prevent raccoons from grabbing them. Never lost one from not securing the top holes.
I just bought this coop- really appreciate your video- I will hardware cloth the whole thing (although for that $, I would have expected it to be done- cmon TSC). I want to add the galvanized metal panels for the roof, need to figure that out. Thanks
this is a really good setup, but you asked about ideas on predators rats come to mind and they would climb up that hardware cloth to the upper holes or dig tunnels underneath--snakes sometimes do that also
I added a layer of hardware cloth around the bottom of my coop to deter digging predators. Dig a few inches down around, lay the hardware cloth, then cover it back up. A bit of work, but fairly successful in keeping digging critters at bay.
Love the pen. As far as the plastic poop catchers go I would keep them. Plastic is easy to wash off. Wood will soak up uric acid from the feces and stink. Putting a heat lamp in there will likely kill the chickens if they are unable to get out. They will overheat fast even with the vent open and the poop trays could melt. If your temps get below zero then get a setup recommended by your Co-Op. Also with the feeder just go in and feed them because if rain blows in it will get in the feeder. On the top portion you could use chicken wire to keep anything from getting through the rectangles or the same wire you used in the corners. The smaller the wire size the best for keeping out snakes. You could electrify the pen If you end up having problems. If you have red ants or other bugs that crawl around they will find a way into the feed if kept on the bottom of the nest boxes. Wild animals will chew and scratch their way into the feed. The latches are very easy for them to move open too. I don't know if their is any containers that are able to seal out the bugs or smell of the feed but good luck.
I would not recommend a 250 watt heat bulb as it is too hot. However, you can use a reptile heater which screws in a standard light socket but is a heat element, not a bulb. They come in various wattages, I use the 150, highly recommend! Resealable 5 gallon buckets with lids work fine for feed. If you are concerned about the latches being opened use small carabiners you can get at the dollar store. Keeping all predators out of a run is very difficult as you must have a no dig apron of mesh around the entire perimeter. I prefer to insure the chickens are secured in the coop nightly for their safety, this way the sizing of the run fencing is not an issue. I use the retriever kennel from Tractor Supply, 10' x 5' x 6' high, on sale now for $299. As an aside, chickens do not produce urine, they only poo and don't pee.
@@mrmrlee no chickens don't produce urine but their feces is coated in uric acid which in a way is like urine. It still causes a lot of smell if the coop is not cleaned out often.

I was considering a dog kennel as the main structure to allow walk-in room as well as some heft to hold my coop in the wind. You have done a fabulous job in describing this. Can you share how you attached the roof cover to the run? I'm a little confused because they each have their own roofing frame and it's unclear how the Retriever fits over the Run roof and attaches. Thanks, in advance.
If you're concerned about predators getting through the upper squares, you could run solar hot wire. Clip it on to your posts run a line, up one then back over to complete the connection.
Concerning the upper fence sections...weasels are great at climbing and can easily get thru those gaps. That said, they are nocturnal hunters so if you are religious about cooping your flock at sunset you should be OK. Just check the run each AM to make sure no weasels (or snakes) are still hanging from the previous night.
How many chickens will fit comfortably in this coop? I wish the back storage compartment was open to the run. Perhaps that's a modification I could make? I'd rather have more covered space for the chickens under the coop. I'd probably be adding the wire as well. Too bad it wasn't in a black finish to match. I read a lot of reviews and I'd likely add another vent across from the other one for some cross flow. Also do you think there would be room for another roosting bar higher up in the coop? Thank you for your video. It helped make my decision. :)
PinkPoodle we have 10 chickens and wouldn’t go with anymore that that. You can for sure modify it. All that separates it is a thin wall that could easily be cut out. Our plan is to replace the coop portion when this one goes bad and keep and extend the run for more chickens
Looks really nice. I am considering doing the same coop and run. This gave me some great ideas. Would you be able to tell me the exact perimeter measurements? I am considering using railroad ties to outline the base and level the entire run and coop centered on them.
Brian Hudson thank you. Do you want the measurement of the run? The run is 10’ x 10’. I’ll have to look at the coop for exact measurements. I’ll get back to you on that one.
I personally would like to have the plastic bin, over the metal bins. I've had her several coops that have came with the metal pull-out drawer to clean. Well after a year to there's no more drawer to pull out because it has been rusted away. The plastic sounds like a pretty good idea.
Just do chicken wire on the top half. No need in doing the more expensive hardware cloth on the top portion. If they (wildlife) are going to grab your birds, it will be down on the ground where they are walking around.
In the south, the 2 x 2 wire should be installed all around to protect chicks against snakes. A lot of people don't realize that snakes can climb...and they will also go under the bottom if not reinforced.
U have done one of the best and most interesting vids yet, I had golden comets that layed jumbo and some ultra jumbo! I had to let them go because of dam hawks and fox killing them! I like to free range!! BTW, Do you know why chicken coops mostly have 2 doors? Because if it had 4-doors it would be a sedan!!!
Three years later. I would not worry about the larger square holes in the upper fence. Chickens will only be in there during the day and hawks and so on cannot get to them, all the other predators like racoons, weasels, etc generally make their raids at night. Chickens will be in the coop at night, I would however not rely on that sliding door to keep them secure. A racoon can and will dig under the run, and use those front feet and just slide the door open. Put a secure latch on it . This requires two trips inside daily to latch at night and open in the morning. Such is the way of raising chickens. I have also learned to never ever rely upon fancy automatic opening and closing doors, more sooner than later they will malfunction and that one night you forget or are busy the door will not shut and the next morning you are three chickens short. Kit
I really like your added ideas!! Excellent video. Thank you for all your wonderful insight. I really wanted this coup, but I'm stuck with the 8X8, because this coup is neither available in my area nor being shipped to my zip code. I wanted the pitched roof, and this was the best option I could find. I just wish they had expansion packs for the 8X8.
+a Spegel thank you for you kind comments. They do have a way to expand these things. It’s not made for it, but it will work. Look at Tractor Supply retriever brand dog kennels. They will link right up to these things. Not sure if the 8x8 is the same or not, but I know it works for the 10x10.
Good job that's what I was looking for Really love to see how it looks like after 2 years Just a suggestion if you have snake or even mouse issue it will be better to cover the big holes with some kind of netting
Really like that set up. A few questions though… is it modular in the sense that the coop can be mounted into any wall/ confirmation? Same for the gate door… can it be placed on any wall for different layouts? My one gripe are those pans inside the coop. I’d rather be able to do a deep litter method and I don’t think it’s possible with that set up and the location of the nesting boxes. Do the 11 chickens fit into the coop with enough room? Seems like it would be pretty tight.
Great video! We have been able to find the wire pen but where did you find the coop you attached? Was that also tractor and supply? We can’t find it on their website??? Just the producers pride pen. Thanks for your help!
+Katy Pancake-Boal it all came in a lot from tractor supply. It was brought to my attention that they changed the run to an 8x8 instead of 10x10. It is under the producers pride brand. The link in the description should take you right to it.
Did your coop come assembled I got 6 leghorns and 1 rooster then I'll get my brown egg layers. And turkeys mine are a week and a half old love your set up
It DID NOT come assembled. That being said, it was super easy to put together. Took maybe 3 hours to have it completely assembled. It comes in sections that easily screw together. All hardware is included. You will be happy with it.
Rats is also a predator of the chickens, they can fit through those wide wires you were asking about I would personally use the wire you for the bottom and put through out the entire coop.
Raccoons can reach in side those bigger holes up top might rap hardware cloth around the hole thing and lay some fencing down around the ground around the coop so they can't dig underneath
It’s nice but not predator proof enough for me. I got cattle panels from Tractor Supply and made a huge one with half inch hardware cloth and two foot aprons all around. It’s so tight that a locust can’t get through it. Great video.
The farm life I think the stopped carrying it. Look for retriever dog kennels and you will see the run portion of my build. You could use that and tie any chicken coop into the run. Hope this helps
It's back in stock as a complete package at TSC. Now the clean out pans are supposed to be metal, and you can get the cover for the run too - Producer Pride branded to match the run. Thanks for the walk through we're putting ours together tomorrow!
Super late to the party and not a big chicken aficionado... but my ferrets could scale that and hop thru in about 3 seconds lol. The hardware cloth at the bottom would only make it easier for them to get to the top half. 3 of them could probably get through all at once, they are like liquid. I don't know what kind of predators you have in your area though. I'm going to cover whatever run I get with hardware cloth, and its largely because of what I learned when I owned them lol.
Watch second video about coop. Changed the watering system and it answers this questions exactly. Thank you for watching and that you for the kind comment
Any preditor that u think would get through the 2x2 holes at the bottom would likely easily climb up and go through the holes abouve the hardware cloth.
tikidrummer I’m not sure yet haven’t had it through a winter yet. Probably put a deicer in it to keep from freezing. Also, take pipe insulation wrap and wrap the pipe. I’ll let you know this winter though for sure.
Monroe Hill Farm I’ve just bought the same setup from TSC. I’m pretty much gonna do a direct lift of your watering setup lol. Was just curious about winterization! Thanks!
tikidrummer also consider putting a heat lamp near the watering cups. It usually keeps the pipes warm enough not to freeze. Awesome!! I think you’ll enjoy this coop/run. We love it.
I subscribed I really like your presentation I'm new to this game I keep here and they need a foot on each for a roost but some people say 8 in I guess if they're comfy that's all that matters I like the way you present things thanks
Thanks very much. Very informative. I do plan to get this unit. I'm getting ready to get purchase some chicks. Question: My back yard has a fence around it; can I let them out of the run during the day and how do I get them back in the run? I remember chasing chickens as a youngster and never did catch one. Seems like we had them trained to go back into the coop with food.
Winston Smith yes for sure. When you first get them leave them in the coop/run for the first two to three weeks. They will realize their home. Our chickens free range on 7 acres all day then every night go back to the coop.
feeder 4" pvc with a cap use sweeping 90s and Tees have it come down and y off and put street 90s adjust angle so the feed wont ruin out but chickens can stick head in to eat
I know this an older video but it popped up and I have to say.. Very nice and if you haven't I would put that hardware cloth all the way up. What color eggs does your chickens lay ?
We have an assortment of colors now. Started out with Sapphire Gem chickens, which are amazing egg layers, and have since added other breeds. Thank you for the kind words as well.
We had that coop. Your weakest point is the coop itself. We had a raccoons pull the vent out to gain access and have a feast. I attached hardware cloth over that entire panel. Two nights later they came back and pulled on the hardware cloth until one of the boards snapped so they got in again. We ended up just building a coop out of more solids materials and attach it to the run.
We actually bought a 10x10 shed and attached it to the run and have eliminated the actual coop. We had the vent torn off as well, but they didn’t get in. Coop lasted us around 2 years before starting to notice issues. Thanks for the reply

Super easy to put together doesn’t take long at all. Hope all goes well
@@monroehillfarm7423 thanks! It’s almost done! We got rained out yesterday! Thanks again for your great video! It gave us a ton of ideas
@@JessicaJEMS My pleasure glad it helped!!
Happy chicken keeping
Just do chicken wire on the top half. No need in doing the more expensive hardware cloth on the top portion. If they (wildlife) are going to grab your birds, it will be down on the ground where they are walking around.
Thanks for the ideas!
In the south, the 2 x 2 wire should be installed all around to protect chicks against snakes. A lot of people don't realize that snakes can climb...and they will also go under the bottom if not reinforced.
Awesome video; your ideas are great!
Thank you
U have done one of the best and most interesting vids yet, I had golden comets that layed jumbo and some ultra jumbo! I had to let them go because of dam hawks and fox killing them! I like to free range!! BTW, Do you know why chicken coops mostly have 2 doors? Because if it had 4-doors it would be a sedan!!!
😂😂😂😂😂 love it
Thanks so much for the review!
My pleasure!! Hope it helped
I got pretty much same set up. I got 4 Rhode Island’s, an went out a few days ago an found a picked to death 3 feet copperhead.
Tim Thomas snakes can be a challenge no doubt. It’s hard to keep snakes out of any coop really. Glad the chickens took care of it for you.
I have been balking on buying this coop...let’s see if you convince me.
My honest opinion on this coop is coming on a video soon. Be on the look out and we will see if it shifts you one way or the other
Three years later.
Kit
Agreed!! Haven’t covered them and it has been fine
Good job that's what I was looking for
Really love to see how it looks like after 2 years
Just a suggestion if you have snake or even mouse issue it will be better to cover the big holes with some kind of netting
Luckily we haven’t had any issues over the last two years. It’s been absolutely awesome!!
I like your coup I have the same pen and no predator has gotten in ! Didn't have to put anything above the first section
I would add chicken wire to the upper walls of the chicken run.
Thinking he storage unit could possible turned into another nesting area!
I would use construction sand in the coop. Easy clean up like kitty litter. You would then not have to slide the plastic bins out very often.
Suggestion: add stepping stones around the coop to further secure the base from predators digging under the run walls.
Great idea. We just buried three feet of wire around the exterior of the coop, but you for sure could use stone of some sort as well
Rats is also a predator of the chickens, they can fit through those wide wires you were asking about I would personally use the wire you for the bottom and put through out the entire coop.
Thanks for the comment
Raccoons can reach in side those bigger holes up top might rap hardware cloth around the hole thing and lay some fencing down around the ground around the coop so they can't dig underneath
It’s nice but not predator proof enough for me. I got cattle panels from Tractor Supply and made a huge one with half inch hardware cloth and two foot aprons all around. It’s so tight that a locust can’t get through it. Great video.
Hello there. Great video. May I ask where did you get get the hutch from as I cannot find it at tractor supply.
Great video! You've helped me get closer to a decision
Thanks alot for including that top too btw. I was looking for it
My pleasure glad I could help in sone way narrow it down. If you need anything don’t hesitate. Have a awesome day!!
Yea I figured a ferret or weasel could, but luckily haven’t had a single issue.
Did you bury a predator fence around the run? You can add large patio stones around the run also. That way nothing can dig their way in.
How would u keep the water from freezing in colder climates? Love what u have done w it!
Watch second video about coop. Changed the watering system and it answers this questions exactly.
Thank you for watching and that you for the kind comment
Any preditor that u think would get through the 2x2 holes at the bottom would likely easily climb up and go through the holes abouve the hardware cloth.
It all looks great! Check out Grampa's feeder, saves money, water proof, will pay for itself in saved feed in no time!
For sure!!
I’ll check it out
Yes, they will crawl up the lower section and enter through the upper section!
Looks Great!
Thank you
How does that watering system hold up in the winter?
tikidrummer I’m not sure yet haven’t had it through a winter yet.
We love it.
Thanks for sharing your ideas. I love the setup. We are looking at buying a chicken coop love the tips.
I subscribed I really like your presentation I'm new to this game I keep here and they need a foot on each for a roost but some people say 8 in I guess if they're comfy that's all that matters I like the way you present things thanks
Steve Germain thank you
nice coop like pipie feeder 4in pvc run two 35 jont on t two pice each side cut holl topside cap ends run pipie up set cap on it
Gotcha!! Thanks
@@monroehillfarm7423 Super! And thanks for the quick reply. My pet peeve is people posting videos and never answering questions. Thanks so much.
I’d cover the whole area with the fine mesh you have on the bottom half
Starting farming checkin sir
feeder 4" pvc with a cap use sweeping 90s and Tees have it come down and y off and put street 90s adjust angle so the feed wont ruin out but chickens can stick head in to eat
ANy chance you might have a photo of how you secured the openings around the door so that I could model mine from yours?
Let me check and I’ll post later if so. If not I can go take one and send to you
Thanks! 76chadreese@gmail.com
I would use 2×4 wire and lay it on it's side to close those huge holes they left in the run.
