Instead of those plastic bins in the coop, I saw a guy that used Weather-Tech Floor mats that he had from an old pick-up. It fit perfectly and he could pull the whole thing out to clean it off. It also saves the wood floor from moisture (chicken poop).

Love the pen. As far as the plastic poop catchers go I would keep them. Plastic is easy to wash off. Wood will soak up uric acid from the feces and stink. Putting a heat lamp in there will likely kill the chickens if they are unable to get out. They will overheat fast even with the vent open and the poop trays could melt. If your temps get below zero then get a setup recommended by your Co-Op. Also with the feeder just go in and feed them because if rain blows in it will get in the feeder. On the top portion you could use chicken wire to keep anything from getting through the rectangles or the same wire you used in the corners. The smaller the wire size the best for keeping out snakes. You could electrify the pen If you end up having problems. If you have red ants or other bugs that crawl around they will find a way into the feed if kept on the bottom of the nest boxes. Wild animals will chew and scratch their way into the feed. The latches are very easy for them to move open too. I don't know if their is any containers that are able to seal out the bugs or smell of the feed but good luck.
I would not recommend a 250 watt heat bulb as it is too hot. However, you can use a reptile heater which screws in a standard light socket but is a heat element, not a bulb. They come in various wattages, I use the 150, highly recommend! Resealable 5 gallon buckets with lids work fine for feed. If you are concerned about the latches being opened use small carabiners you can get at the dollar store. Keeping all predators out of a run is very difficult as you must have a no dig apron of mesh around the entire perimeter. I prefer to insure the chickens are secured in the coop nightly for their safety, this way the sizing of the run fencing is not an issue. I use the retriever kennel from Tractor Supply, 10' x 5' x 6' high, on sale now for $299. As an aside, chickens do not produce urine, they only poo and don't pee.

@@monroehillfarm7423 I ended up trimming some 1" pvc, strapped to the jam then wrapped it with the hardware cloth. It came out pretty solid. The rear vent is open and the door into the run is open and still getting that hot.
Check out Grandpa's feeders. They're treadle feeders that almost eliminate food waste. Rodents can't get to the feed but chickens can. There are cheaper versions as well. Not sure about the quality of the other ones. Coop and run look great! I'm sold on the run for sure.

feeder 4" pvc with a cap use sweeping 90s and Tees have it come down and y off and put street 90s adjust angle so the feed wont ruin out but chickens can stick head in to eat
Thank you for this GREAT post! I don’t have the chickens yet, but I have been horrified with the cheapness and small spaces I’ve seen on coops for sale. I was considering a dog kennel as the main structure to allow walk-in room as well as some heft to hold my coop in the wind. You have done a fabulous job in describing this. I’ll have the hardware cloth all the way up due to those pesky rat snakes we have around here.
@@danielwarren7110 luckily haven’t had an issue with rats and haven’t lost a single chicken except for my own negligence of not locking the coop down or something silly that was my own fault.
this is a really good setup, but you asked about ideas on predators rats come to mind and they would climb up that hardware cloth to the upper holes or dig tunnels underneath--snakes sometimes do that also
I added a layer of hardware cloth around the bottom of my coop to deter digging predators. Dig a few inches down around, lay the hardware cloth, then cover it back up. A bit of work, but fairly successful in keeping digging critters at bay.
I just bought this coop- really appreciate your video- I will hardware cloth the whole thing (although for that $, I would have expected it to be done- cmon TSC). I want to add the galvanized metal panels for the roof, need to figure that out. Thanks
Great video! We have been able to find the wire pen but where did you find the coop you attached? Was that also tractor and supply? We can’t find it on their website??? Just the producers pride pen. Thanks for your help!
+Katy Pancake-Boal it all came in a lot from tractor supply. It was brought to my attention that they changed the run to an 8x8 instead of 10x10. It is under the producers pride brand. The link in the description should take you right to it.
Any preditor that u think would get through the 2x2 holes at the bottom would likely easily climb up and go through the holes abouve the hardware cloth.
If you're concerned about predators getting through the upper squares, you could run solar hot wire. Clip it on to your posts run a line, up one then back over to complete the connection.
No really worried about snakes. Only snake that really gets in is a chicken snake and they are harmless anyway. No way to keep everything out but keeping the things that will kill my chickens was the ultimate goal. Thank you for the response
Not sure where you live or if you mentioned it, but how is the run when it comes to snow accumulation? I don’t think that cover would hold the weight if there was, say, a foot of snow. Would it have to be reinforced underneath and would a pvc roof work better?
We live in Northern Mississippi and don’t get that much snow so it’s hard to say. The most we’ve had is around 3-4” and it held up fine. If you get a lot of snow then I would probably reinforce the roof with support boards under it and use a metal roof system.
@@monroehillfarm7423 it’s a little over a year later and we’re changing out the roof for a corrugated roof. When it rains, there’s no way to keep the rain from getting between the roof and the coop. It drips right down where they come out of the coop. How did you deal with that? It’s funny how you say at the end you want more chickens. My husband, who will be doing most of the work to redo the roof, doesn’t even want the chickens. It’s really a big expense. When they get bumblefoot, it’s not fun. Lol
@6942pjka I never had an issue with any water getting in. If you are having that issue I think corrugated roofing will solve the issue for sure. I would just make sure to run it from the very top of the run onto the coup and not just on the coup.
I have a question for you I recently purchased just the chicken run. I want to know if my Coupe that I have will work with this particular Chicken Run? I do not have the two that you have in this UA-cam video. Mine is one that basically sits on the ground. Mine is an echo Flex jumbo Coupe so I was curious how high up does that panel that you take off actually go?
Concerning the upper fence sections...weasels are great at climbing and can easily get thru those gaps. That said, they are nocturnal hunters so if you are religious about cooping your flock at sunset you should be OK. Just check the run each AM to make sure no weasels (or snakes) are still hanging from the previous night.
I know this an older video but it popped up and I have to say.. Very nice and if you haven't I would put that hardware cloth all the way up. What color eggs does your chickens lay ?
We have an assortment of colors now. Started out with Sapphire Gem chickens, which are amazing egg layers, and have since added other breeds. Thank you for the kind words as well.
Is your hardware fabric going into the ground? We had a coop that we thought was secure. The predator dug a hole under the metal part of the coop for a small run. We have used hardware fabric and metal siding 6 inches into the ground.
Can I ask why did you go with the different cover than the one they have specifically for this pen ? Was the cover not available at the time you purchased ?
My wife has been asking me to add one. It’s on my to do list which if miles and miles long 😂😂. If you watch my second video on this coop I changed up a little and added a bath to the coop. Going to try and add the opener to the barn
Do you know if this coop is still available? I found a version of it but it isn't nearly as nice (tractor supply) now. Doesn't have the storage/bottom portion you showed.
The farm life I think the stopped carrying it. Look for retriever dog kennels and you will see the run portion of my build. You could use that and tie any chicken coop into the run. Hope this helps
It's back in stock as a complete package at TSC. Now the clean out pans are supposed to be metal, and you can get the cover for the run too - Producer Pride branded to match the run. Thanks for the walk through we're putting ours together tomorrow!
@@monroehillfarm7423 thanks for the info and the video. I like your setup so I’m pretty much setting mine up the same way. I thought about putting fence board up also to cover the gaps at the door. We’ll see how it goes. Thanks
In the south, the 2 x 2 wire should be installed all around to protect chicks against snakes. A lot of people don't realize that snakes can climb...and they will also go under the bottom if not reinforced.
Thanks very much. Very informative. I do plan to get this unit. I'm getting ready to get purchase some chicks. Question: My back yard has a fence around it; can I let them out of the run during the day and how do I get them back in the run? I remember chasing chickens as a youngster and never did catch one. Seems like we had them trained to go back into the coop with food.
Winston Smith yes for sure. When you first get them leave them in the coop/run for the first two to three weeks. They will realize their home. Our chickens free range on 7 acres all day then every night go back to the coop.
tikidrummer I’m not sure yet haven’t had it through a winter yet. Probably put a deicer in it to keep from freezing. Also, take pipe insulation wrap and wrap the pipe. I’ll let you know this winter though for sure.
Monroe Hill Farm I’ve just bought the same setup from TSC. I’m pretty much gonna do a direct lift of your watering setup lol. Was just curious about winterization! Thanks!
tikidrummer also consider putting a heat lamp near the watering cups. It usually keeps the pipes warm enough not to freeze. Awesome!! I think you’ll enjoy this coop/run. We love it.
I am currently running this same set up thanks to your video. I have run into one problem with the retriever canopy and wanted to see if you have this problem or have an idea that might fix my problem. My retriever cover has 8 water holes to allow water to drain rain and not weigh it down. The problem is that 2 holes are directly over the coop which drips water right down towards the coop door opening. Any suggestions on how to divert the rain water to the top of the coop roof?
Not sure as mine doesn’t have any holes in it. Maybe use some matching cloth outdoor rated and silicone over the holes then lay cloth on top of silicone.
Three years later. I would not worry about the larger square holes in the upper fence. Chickens will only be in there during the day and hawks and so on cannot get to them, all the other predators like racoons, weasels, etc generally make their raids at night. Chickens will be in the coop at night, I would however not rely on that sliding door to keep them secure. A racoon can and will dig under the run, and use those front feet and just slide the door open. Put a secure latch on it . This requires two trips inside daily to latch at night and open in the morning. Such is the way of raising chickens. I have also learned to never ever rely upon fancy automatic opening and closing doors, more sooner than later they will malfunction and that one night you forget or are busy the door will not shut and the next morning you are three chickens short. Kit
Marc McCinnes I haven’t done anything with them. Left as is and haven’t had an issue. You could strap a piece of wood to it and only either open the door in or out. Couldn’t come up with a good solution I liked so left it as is
I personally would like to have the plastic bin, over the metal bins. I've had her several coops that have came with the metal pull-out drawer to clean. Well after a year to there's no more drawer to pull out because it has been rusted away. The plastic sounds like a pretty good idea.
Nice walk through. I'm eyeing this run for my quail, minus the coop since they are kinda too dumb to figure out steep ramps. Did you ever figure out the feeder from outside? I was loving the sounds of that but my concern is rain gunking it up unless the feeder is also shielded from the rain on the inside, like build a small roof over the pvc pipe feeder.
We just stick with the hanging feeders. Was going to do that but thought the same thing about the rain getting in pipe and causing more issues than it was worth
Great job on the coop, I think you have made my mind up on which one to get.
Thank you 😄

@@monroehillfarm7423 I ended up trimming some 1" pvc, strapped to the jam then wrapped it with the hardware cloth. It came out pretty solid. Now I have to figure out how to cool the hen house portion. During the day it has been getting into the 90's and its only May here in CT. and im concern that it will only get worse as summer comes. The rear vent is open and the door into the run is open and still getting that hot.
Matthew Opie 💥 perfect!! We are in the process of expanding our coop and run. Video popping soon
Man that is one beautiful coop, I think you've done a great job.
Thank you
Great chicken coop , I love it
Thank you
Check out Grandpa's feeders. They're treadle feeders that almost eliminate food waste. Rodents can't get to the feed but chickens can. There are cheaper versions as well. Not sure about the quality of the other ones. Coop and run look great! I'm sold on the run for sure.
How would u keep the water from freezing in colder climates? Love what u have done w it!
Watch second video about coop. Changed the watering system and it answers this questions exactly.
Thank you for watching and that you for the kind comment
Is there a way to take out the wall and add it in the front open bottom area to make the coop bigger?
I’m sure you can
How many eggs a day are you getting with just 5 nesting boxes? Do they share or?
Yes they share unless a hen gets broody.
We usually average 10-15
feeder 4" pvc with a cap use sweeping 90s and Tees have it come down and y off and put street 90s adjust angle so the feed wont ruin out but chickens can stick head in to eat
I just bought one, it will be here this Friday. Thank you for the walkthrough and all of the wonderful ideas!!
My pleasure let me know if you have any questions
It might be different; I just ordered one myself and it's not the same on the inside.
Great video!!! Absolutely love your coop. How did you connect the tree supports to each other! This is a brilliant idea. Thank you.
Used timber locks. Lowes or Home Depot Carrie’s they in the screw section.
Yes put hardware wire all around it because a mink or possum will squezze right thru there and kill all the chickens
+Gwen Bain 👍🏻👍🏻 thanks for the suggestion
As a matter of fact, a mink DID get ALL our laying hens in one night. 😖
Some of the reviews on the TSC website mentions that the coop is not water proof. Is this true?
Nothing is truly waterproof without a little work. I haven’t had an issue at all with water.
Can you give an update for 2021 on this coop?
Thank you for this GREAT post! I don’t have the chickens yet, but I have been horrified with the cheapness and small spaces I’ve seen on coops for sale. I was considering a dog kennel as the main structure to allow walk-in room as well as some heft to hold my coop in the wind. You have done a fabulous job in describing this. I’ll have the hardware cloth all the way up due to those pesky rat snakes we have around here.
Glad I could help!! Good luck and thank you. We love ours!
@@monroehillfarm7423 In the UK when we first had chickens we lost a lot of them to rats, so we had to put hardware cloth all the way to the top
@@danielwarren7110 luckily haven’t had an issue with rats and haven’t lost a single chicken except for my own negligence of not locking the coop down or something silly that was my own fault.
this is a really good setup, but you asked about ideas on predators
rats come to mind and they would climb up that hardware cloth to the upper holes or dig tunnels underneath--snakes sometimes do that also
I added a layer of hardware cloth around the bottom of my coop to deter digging predators.
Thanks
Darcy Chapman awesome!! Glad I could help in any way.
Awesome Job ! Your Girls are gonna Love their New Home ! :)
Thank you
Thanks for sharing and for the ideas and links! Real helpful! :)
Did you bury a predator fence around the run? You can add large patio stones around the run also. That way nothing can dig their way in.
Good idea
What about snakes getting through the fence above the chicken wire?
@@monroehillfarm7423 thanks for your reply. I’m assuming you can configure the run to have the door in a different spot?
@@6942pjka yes you can move it around to any side
Honestly you can make the pen fit probably any coupe. I have it connected to a shed now.
+Bill Talbott thanks for the insight. Appreciate it very much.
Thinking he storage unit could possible turned into another nesting area!
Why does your coop have 5 nesting boxes but the product shows 4 boxes?
I think they did a redesign since I purchased it and reduced it by one nesting box. For 10-12 chickens though you really don’t need anymore than 4.
I have same fence. What tarp on top did you use ?
I know this an older video but it popped up and I have to say..
Very nice and if you haven't I would put that hardware cloth all the way up.
What color eggs does your chickens lay ?
We have an assortment of colors now. Started out with Sapphire Gem chickens, which are amazing egg layers, and have since added other breeds.
Thank you for the kind words as well.
Awesome video; your ideas are great!
Thank you
Well thought out. I’m thinking of getting one of these coops.
Can you sand me link to buy this things on the floor you got in your chicken coop
Is your hardware fabric going into the ground? We had a coop that we thought was secure. The predator dug a hole under the metal part of the coop for a small run. We have used hardware fabric and metal siding 6 inches into the ground.
Yes it goes under the ground. I think I mentioned that in the video at sone point
Will the roof hold up to snow load?
I put patio shade cloth on the top section and hardware cloth at the bottom.
Can I ask why did you go with the different cover than the one they have specifically for this pen ? Was the cover not available at the time you purchased ?
Correct!! No cover was available for it at the time I purchased it.
Has anyone added an automatic door to this coop? I don't see my previous inquiry, so if duplicate, I apologize!
Morgan Woeller we got it at tractor supply 1 month ago. Look online
I have looked and haven’t seen it. It is a seasonal coop though so just keep your eye out.
This is the one I want to buy too... checked today - says it's unavailable at Tractor Supply ... I wonder if it will become available soon ?
Can you sand me link where to buy that extra net for predator please
Room enough for 11 chickens? Seems tight especially in the winter when they won't be outside much.
It has worked out perfect. I now have lots more chickens and have added to the coop, but when I first started 11 fit perfectly.
Nice work! Well thoughtout. Thanks. Skip Paschall
Hello there. Great video. May I ask where did you get get the hutch from as I cannot find it at tractor supply.
How did you end up securing the area around the door to the run?
Put hardware cloth on door and each side then put a fence board on each side to cover the gap.
@@monroehillfarm7423 did you end up deciding to put hardware cloth on the top sections as well?
@@brettpollock6083 no I just did the bottom and the only chickens I’ve lost are due to my own failure. Forgot to shut a door.
@@monroehillfarm7423 Super! And thanks for the quick reply. My pet peeve is people posting videos and never answering questions. Thanks so much.
How does that watering system hold up in the winter?
tikidrummer I’m not sure yet haven’t had it through a winter yet.
We love it.
Thanks for sharing your ideas. I love the setup. We are looking at buying a chicken coop love the tips.
Very nice and neat set up you have there. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Pride of the Southland Kennels thank you
I would add your feeder and water under your coop. By doing this you will ensure that your chicken food stays dry and the water stays cooler.
love this so much! we just got the same coop and eager to get it built
Super easy to put together doesn’t take long at all. Hope all goes well
@@monroehillfarm7423 thanks! It’s almost done! We got rained out yesterday! Thanks again for your great video! It gave us a ton of ideas
@@JessicaJEMS My pleasure glad it helped!!
Happy chicken keeping
Kit
Agreed!! Haven’t covered them and it has been fine
What about the gaps on the door? That's how I happened upon this video. Can't figure out a solution (I have the same coop).
Saffire Gem is a nice looking Chicken.
New Subscriber, FANTASTIC JOB ‼️ Vinny 🇺🇸
Thanks for the sub!! And thanks for the compliment glad you liked it.
Good looking coop
I would use construction sand in the coop. Easy clean up like kitty litter. You would then not have to slide the plastic bins out very often.
Thanks so much for the review!
My pleasure!! Hope it helped
