    Göktürks are quite underrated for the second largest nomadic empire in history only leaving the first place to another medieval Tengrist entity, the colossal empire of Chinggis

    • @nomad1639

      Theyre probably underrated because as was said, they didnt leave much writings about them behind, unlike the mongols who not only ruled the area of the gokturks which was mainly steppe land, but sedentary civilizations such as china and persia aswell.

    • @KhansDen
      @KhansDen  Рік тому +6

      Indeed. The Göktürks were different then the Mongols, in that they already were sedentary in parts when the first Roman diplomats met their rulers (think of Zemarchus meeting Istemi in Suyyab). Furthermore, they established very good relations with their neighbors early on (the Wei Chinese, the Koreans, then the Persians, Sogdians and lastly the Byzantines). But once they started invading other sedentary states like China and Persia, the opinion in those countries quickly changed towards the Göktürks.
      Still, I would not equate the Turkic Empires with the Mongols.

    3:50 Now hold on. This legend holds a deep symbolic meaning. Namely, the she-wolf represents indigenous tribes that were associated with the wolves. Wolf was perhaps their totem. They took in and raised the prince who founded a ruling dynasty. The boy here represents the remnants of once mighty people, probably Scythians who dominated the steppes before the arrival of Xiognu. The boy without arms means he lost his armies; without legs - that his people(the foundation of his kingdom) were massacred. It was a common practice among nomadic tribes to obtain their names, specific traits and etc from their mothers’s side. For example one of the oldest Kyrgyz tribes called Bugu (female deer) is named so because of a mother deer that nurtrured and raised a pair of kids after everyone else died in a ruthless war. It is thought that this particular tribe is related to Evenks through their mothers. Bugu means deer in Evenk language too. But through their father they belong to the Right Wing group of tribes. They were also known as one of ancient Uighur allies (Pugu), meaning their origins go very far back in time. In a way these legends describe relationships and inter-mixing of different populations. They are not just fairy tales.

    Greetings, as a Turk it is very exciting to see a channel that delves into ancient Turkic history. Our ancient history is SEVERELY under-represented in media. It may be partly because most texts and manuscripts about Turkic people come from other cultures and are not common. Thank you for your works, they're very rare and very well made too!

      Hi, and thank you very much! I guess two factors played a role in my decision making. The first factor is personal. Being of Turkish origin, I always wondered where Turkish identity came from, and certain traditions. Later I became interested in the Turkish and Turkic langauges. As I started studying history at uni, I began research about the earliest Turkic peoples and stumbled upon the Göktürks. The second factor is the fact that early Turks are seriously underrepresented in media and even academia - which motivated me to start a blog where I told the origin story of the Göktürks in novel-like fashion. These short stories then developed into a video series which was of course based on facts, but where I also wanted to convey history in a more.. well, interesting manner. Fitting musical renditions, stunning visuals and, of course, a narration that people can actually follow without falling asleep after 30 seconds. So, that's basically the motivation for everything on this channel. That being said, thank you for watching and welcome! :)

    "History of the Suí dinasty", chapter 84:
    The superiority of the Göktürks is in their cavalry and archers. When they are in a winning position, they advance with fury; but when danger comes, they withdraw with the speed of the wind, and disappear like lightning, without preserving order. Bows and arrows serve them as claws and fangs. Helmet and cuirass are their usual attire. Their detachments do not go in order, their camps do not stand still. They stop wherever they find grass and water; rams and horses provide food for their army. If they win, they stop and seek the wealth of the enemy; if they are defeated, they withdraw without any shame. They do not burden themselves with night duty, nor do they keep watch during the day; they do not waste their strength in building fortifications, or in storing provisions. But when Chinese soldiers go to war, they [Göktürks] behave very differently. If the Chinese enter the battle with the Göktürks, they [Chinese] rarely win. If we begin to imitate them now, if we adapt to their means, they will not be able to overcome us, and they will not attack us again.
    - Emperor Yang of Suí

    That ten year old boy was the leader of this clan. His arms were cut from elbow his legs were cut from knee. It was a persecution for defeated dynasty leaders clan leaders in those times executed by cruel enemies like chinese and europeans.Turks never did that to their enemies even after defeat. He was thrown to a mud after persecution trapped to be attacked and eaten alive by wild animals Then a wolf appeared and took him away. Chinese thought wolf would eat him. Wolf took him to Altai mountains and healed his wounds. He lived with wolves and learned their way of social order, hunting, fighting and leader selection tactics. That is how Turks learned and used wolf tactics in wars and selecting leaders. She wolf fed him with her milk. That is why Turks see the wolf as their mother. Marrying boy with wolf is another version of the story. As wolf has taken him to Altai mountains the chinese attack was not a small village clan attack near chinese borders it was a war in Turkish lands near Altai mountains most likely it was an ambush in Ötüken as in Turkish folk stories. It is told that after turks realized it was an ambush men quickly gathered together to fight back but failed because enemy forces were large in numbers. Women took children and tried to escape to mountains. The boy most probably met them later.

      @@KhansDen And what does the "ancient Turkic world" or modern one if you will have to do with the historical Türks? Türks were a small group of people likely not nomadic to begin with and perhaps even not "fully Turkic", who were forcefully relocated from their Qocho-Gansu homeland to Altai by their Rouran overlords , eventually overcoming all odds, primarily numerical, to become the masters of the eastern Steppes. This is quite clear from Türk stone monuments and Chinese records. Türks always call for unity and support of ancient Uyghurs and the Oghuz because the bulk of the army comprised from these two groups - natives of the region, and Chinese say that Türks are being heroic in the steppes through the hands of the Uyghurs. Chinese tend to often overexaggerate, however this shows the dependence of Türks on their Uyghur/Oghuz subjects. on the other hand, ancient Uyghurs of Mongolia considered Türks to be 'imposters', they are implying through their inscriptions that they were here before the Türks and that Türk Kaghanate was illegitimate. A hundred years later we find Uyghurs in their new homeland Qocho, the former homeland of the Türks, but Uyghurs already start calling themselves Türks (which would have nonsense and unthinkable during Kaganate time period), their language Uyghur-Türk and there are numerous descendants of the Türk elites such as Tonyukuk family living in the kingdom of Qocho many hundereds of years later after collapse of the Türk Kaghanate. The thing is ancient 'Turkic world' if there was ever such a thing had very little to do with Türks especially such groups as Qipchaqs. Türks were a unique, separate group of people and saying that modern day Turkic groups or the Turkic world can claim their ancestry, relation and continuation from the Türks is nonsense. It is like saying that modern Germanic peoples can claim their ancestry from the Visigoths.

      @@NoMadMediaProductions Including of course the history of the Northern dynasties in China. The Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi and Northern Zhou dynasties all descended from the Tuoba family which, for all we know, was Turkic. There was even a conflict in-between the sinicized people during the Wei dynasty about an order that would have forbidden to speak Turkic (or any other non-Chinese language), wearing Turkic clothes etc. So that comes to mind. Might explained the deep connections between the Wei, later Zhou, and the Göktürks. They fought together against the Qi, who by then had definitely left the "Turco-Chinese" cultural sphere. It was the Qi, too, who rebuilt parts of the Chinese Wall due to an imminent invasion by the Turks. The Wei and Zhou didn't.
