Bumin and the Creation of the first First Gokturk Empire

  • The history of the early Turkic people began with a struggle. After a century of life under foreign rule, the Turks of the Ashina Clan had finally decided to break their chains and rebel against the Rouran in the year 552. Bumin as the leader of the Clan defeated the Rouran Khaganate and created his own state: the Empire of the Türk. This new empire then stretched from Korea to Ukraine, and from Siberia to the Gates of Persia. We call these people Gokturks. We further know how the Turks created the Göktürk state - but do you know why this happened? Why did Bumin fight against Anagui, his own liege, in the first place? What were the reasons for his rebellion? Did he hold a personal grudge against the Khagan of the Rouran, as history books like to tell us?
    In this analysis, I take you on a journey back 1500 years in history. To find answers to these questions, we need to go back to the Altai Mountains, where it all started. You will see that there is more to the story than the simple narrative that has been told since the times of Attila the Hun. Because the equestrian nomadic societies of Eurasia brought the world mighty and power-hungry warriors who conquered, plundered and staged revolutions. And in every revolution, there is a man with a vision. In this case, the revolutionary’s name was Bumin.

    So different to hear history of the Steppes and especially so long ago. Very engaging to view. It's pretty obvious there's a lot of work put into this very professional presentation. Well worth the wait. Do film like yours get any recognition at places like Cannes?

      Hello Lorina. Oh no, thank you but my videos have never gotten any recognition apart from UA-cam. Perhaps, some day, I'll become a true filmmaker and producer of sorts, with a higher budget. Then we'll see. Thank you for the kind words, and for watching :)

    The Rouran Khaganate flag is actually the flag used by International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War 1936-39.

    Since you mentioned Goguryeo in the video, I’d like to ask you something. I remember reading somewhere that the “Gog” part in the word “Goguryeo” is the equivalent of the word “Kök/Gök” in Turkic languages. Although it would be hella cool if it were true, it didn’t seem very plausible to me. And I couldn’t find anything about the meaning/etymology of the word “Goguryeo”. But I know that unlike me, you at least have a basic understanding of the Korean language. So I thought it would be a good idea to ask you about it.

      Sadly that theory is shit as the nation was called Guryeo while the Go part in front of it is from modern Korean and means "Ancient/Old". And was put in front of Guryeo as Goguryeo in order for records to know the difference between ancient guryeo and Guryeo/Koryeo from the middle ages. lol

      @@KhansDen As for why Anagui refused to marry his daughter to Bumi, chances are the fellow was prideful and won’t settle for anything less than his daughter become the empress of a bigger kingdom.
      Once, Western Wei sought an alliance with him and he demand one of his daughter be made the empress of the emperor of western Wei, even when he already got an empress of his own, Anagui was like “get ride of that wife of yours right now and make my daughter your empress or no deal”. In the end Yuwen Tai had to force the emperor to do just that so that the alliance could got through.
      But in the end it hardly mattered because not long after that daughter of his died in child birth, so Anagui immediately married his another daughter to the ruling figure of Eastern Wei(later become northern Qi), Gao Huan(a guy in many ways like Yuwen Tai) and once again demand that his daughter be made Gao Huan’s wife or no deal(in ancient China a man can have many women but only one as his wife), despite Gao Huan already got a wife. And like Yuwen Tai, Gao Huan have to do so for the sake of alliance.
      So I guess Yuwen Tai went to the Turks because it’s clear Anagui don’t give a damn of alliance whatsoever, he only care about his own power and has no principle, he’d gladly backstab an ally the moment he has something to gain

    Is rouran turkish then why is avar called turkish And again, why did the Turks, before establishing the Turkish Khagnate, they were conquered and made slaves by the Rourans who were rumored to be Mongols?
    And It's not that the old turkish caste is higher than the old mongols 🙏

    • @KhansDen
      @KhansDen  2 роки тому +2

      Unlike the majority of Turkish historians, I do not believe that the Rouran were Turkic. There is simply no evidence for that, neither their names nor their language suggest this.
      Therefore, they were not referred to as being Turkic in this or any other video. The Avars in Europe are a mix of local tribes and those parts of the Rouran who had fled from the Göktürks in 552 and onward.

      @@KhansDen Wasn't it the Turks who initially controlled the eastern steppes before they were expelled from their homeland and also they were originally the founders of the xiongnu empire that ruled in the eastern steppes and parts of the central steppes, so it can be seen that the Mongols at that time were under the xiongnu empire or Asia Hun which is actually the Turkic people and after the Xiongnu range collapsed and they migrated westward to Europe and partly towards the Persian world, then why did the Mongols dominate the Turks themselves and enslave the Turks in Altay as blacksmiths who needed by the rouran or the mongols, wasn't it actually the mongols who originally worked under the turks and enslaved them?

    • @KhansDen
      @KhansDen  2 роки тому +4

      @@indramuhammad1942 You must keep in mind that this "slave" narrative of the video ONLY applied to the Ashina Clan, to those people who originally were called "Türk". All other Turks at the time of the Rouran Khaganate were also vassals of the Rouran, but they were either in constant rebellion (Tiele Turks) or not part of the Rouran power projection sphere (Kyrgyz). That does not mean that they were literally enslaved. It just means that they were politically subordinate to the Rouran family.
      The Turks and Mongols since the Xiongnu Period were in constant clashes. The Xiongnu were defeated and succeded by the Xianbei (Mongols) who were in turn stopped by the Tuoba (Turks), who then were attacked by the Rouran (Mongols?). And the Rouran were finally overthrown by the Ashina, who were succeded by the Uighurs and Kyrgyz (all Turks), before the rise of the Mongols and lastly the creation of the Great Mongol Ulus by Genghis Khan. The political and socioeconomic dynamics in the steppe are indeed interesting. But it was never the case that one people enslaved the other, because both the Turks and Mongols were for the most part never really united. This is what made the Gokturks so unique, they managed to to just that. And 700 years later, Genghis Khan in the spirit of Bumin, perhaps, did the same with his Mongol tribe.
