GE dryer stops randomly - SOLVED, bad relay.

- NO you angry youtube commenters this is NOT a repair video, I'm just pointing out the issue and you can decide to solder a relay yourself or just buy a new board.
GE model DCVH680GJ1MR was stopping randomly with no correlation to the type of cycle, the heat level, etc. Heater was working fine, all sensors functioning, turns out the motor relay is bad.
To fix, either buy a new board (eBay - look up the serial # on the board), or, some say re-soldering the relay contacts on the bottom of the board do the trick.
You rock man! I have the very same dryer, same color too and with the same problem. I thought it was one of the temp sensor that trips when it gets too hot... I thought, so I change it a while back but the problem return shortly. Very sporadic and sometimes like a total failure and then it just starts up. This was my last attempt with the dryer before I toss it out when I came upon your video. I turned on my dryer and of course it runs for a minute and then stop, I tried what you showed and it WORKS! It is that relay at the right edge. The relay is not bad though, its just loose soldering around two of its legs. On mine you could not tell until you press on the relay then you see it separate from the circuit board. Quick re-solder with my solder iron and It was running like a champ. Big THANKS for a great video and for sharing.
Sweet!! This is my first repair video ever so I'm glad it helped somebody!
ME too !
Mines doing the same thing
Good to know because I'm tired of slapping the side to get it started. Looks like I'll be soldering it tomorrow.
Just bought a used GE unit and I'm having this exact problem ! Thank you
Edit, update: I removed the top cover of my dryer unit and located the PCB. I tested the right side relay by gently tapping on it and sure enough the drum motor would turn on. I suspect that the relay is actually okay and the root problem is a poor pin connection between the relay and the PCB. I wrapped a zip tie around the PCB, (over the relay) and added some plastic wedges between the zip tie and the relay in order to apply some pressure on the relay body and force it down onto the board. So far its been working after about 50 start/stop test cycles.
Can send us pictures how you did it. Thanks
Zip ties for the win! On another forum some guy said he used JB Weld to secure something against the relay but eventually replaced it anyway. I'm gonna test my relays tonight, i hope it is as simple as a zip tie. Thanks!
@@enhancedvibes Zip ties are still holding strong. Havent had an issue since. I should replace the whole board but, you know, other emergencies take priority over something that is working.
Definitely the best video! Went through a bunch and couldn't find anything. Same as other person who commented, we were ready to toss it. We have same exact model and color. Issue was with the same relay! Thank you for doing this. It was $8 on ebay for the part and fixed it.
Can you share the part number ?
Can you share the part number or link to amazon part
Like to see the actual repair done. Thanks.
Thanks! I've been smacking my dryer for 6 months!
Hahaha you're welcome!!
Man, this is just the best repair video I have ever seen!
Awesome I think have the same problem
Did you say this on your own video? (That doesn’t even have any repair??🤣)
@@pobrichi Yeah cuz I don't give a shit and I've clearly helped a lot of people find a solution
@@9oreos308 😂 I was searching for 3 days, couldn’t find a solution. I’ve been repairing this dryer to keep it alive forever. Thanks to you she’s STILL kickin’!!!
Thank you for this!!!! I have the same dryer and have to keep slapping the top of it when I randomly stops I see why now!
Lmaoooo Idk y this comment is so funny to me
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!! We have the same dryer!!! This worked!!! 💖❤️💜
Good! I'm glad it helped :)
Dude.... most helpful video in the history of UA-cam. Thanks bud
No problem! That's why I posted it! Took me like 10 minutes total and it's already saved other people hours/hundreds of dollars
Dude seems like my issue. Question is did a new relay solve it? Love the title...it has the word SOLVED!!!
I just replaced the whole board. Some people said re-soldering the relay contacts below the board did the trick
I like this, thanks
Add Model #GFDN110GLOWW mfg 5/12 to the list. Identical problem same main board. 50-100 Bux for ebay. Put a thin rubber washer under it to press on main board, seems to be working. Thanks
Robert Lee Regarding you GE dryer repair post, did the washers placed under board create pressure that may simulate tapping on relay or other component for better contact? Thanks
Broken solder joint on the control board most likely.
So which parts were replaced? Board, relays? Mine (model DHDVH66EH3BB) will run for different times and then shut off. It restarts intermittently when I push start.
I replaced the whole board. You could look up relay and replace just that. Some people also said just re-soldering the relay contacts below the board did the trick.
Thank you. I will likely do the same if problem persists. Did you buy from a local supplier or online? If the later, please let me know. Approx cost? We’re the relays and components fairly easy to replace on new board?
@@stevewohnoutka5622 I bought it from Ebay, but I used the full washer serial number (in my video title) to find the control board.
I'm late to this but mine began the start stop about 6 mos ago, having to pound on it to restart. I finally bought a board on eBay & have a question. After you replaced the board, did you have to reprogram it, meaning did you have to go into service mode to enter any codes or did it start automatically after installation? I've never done anything remotely like this so want to be prepared. I'd rather pound on it to restart than install the board & have it not start because I have zero idea on the service mode stuff. Thanks for any info you can provide & for figuring out the problem in the first place. Seems to have helped alot of frustrated owners of this model like me.
I actually didn't end up replacing the board, but you should not have to reprogram anything. Just plug and play, so to speak.
@@9oreos308 Ok thanks. I saw you replied to a couple of comments that you had replaced the board so thought I'd ask. After posting my questions, I asked the supplier on eBay & they said the same thing, plug & play. Appreciate your quick response. And your video too.
Can anyone advise how to unplug the 4 wires (1 white, 2 black & 1 blue) that are on the front of the board? I can't remove them to install a new board. I tried pulling them off w/ my hands, then tried w/ pliers but they won't budge. All other connections are easy to remove.
Is it easy to remove the board? Any pitfalls I should know about?
My ge dryer is little older one it works for a minute or 2 then stops , changed the interiror switch but still the same any idea you can help me or dump it in garbage?
I just received my replacement how is it removed from the board thank you
If you ordered just the relay/little black box, you're gonna need to look up some tutorial videos on how to solder, and/or how to remove components from a PCB using a soldering iron.
My question is, how do i fix it, now that i know what the problem is, i need to know what to do now?
Mine is on the connector on the bottom right. I have to keep jiggling it. Guess I'll leave the top panel off
What model is it? I have one like it with a broken belt. The model tag is missing
model is in the video description
Same problem here, but how to repair it. No one would stay arround to slap it everytime it stops!
Either buy the board on ebay (the product number is on the actual flat rectangular part of the board) or re-solder the contacts on the bottom of the relay. Relays do die though, so you may be able to buy a new relay and solder a new one in. Easiest to replace the board, cheapest to put in a new relay or re-solder the old one.
Okay, so how do you fix a bad relay? Change entire mother board?
Change it, or some say re-soldering the contacts at the bottom of the relay (on bottom of the motherboard) does the trick.
@@9oreos308 👍
@@9oreos308 many thanks for the prompt reply. I’m no expert, but if I order a whole new part (mother board) and simply replace it, you think that should fix it?
@@elmisticco that would definitely do it. That's what I did.
@@9oreos308 👍🙏
Did this give anyone a PF code or just doesn't start?
I never saw any codes pop up, sorry.
PF on L'G's usually is a problem with the main board. With washers anyway.....usually it is a resistor ua-cam.com/video/Om3i_iXKmL8/v-deo.html
