    The "On Ramp" "Off Ramp" description really helped me with the shape of the s-curves. Before mine all looked like "S" (too curly), but thinking about them NOT as a shape my hand has been making for 24+ years (writing) made all the difference. Thanks Angela

      That's exactly why I like to give several analogies. Everyone has a different point of reference, so it helps make it easier to imagine the design. Thanks so much for watching!

      Cheeky Mare hey! I did the same thing, but after this different description I think it will help me not curve too much. Hopefully, just watched it and will get to practice hopefully before Monday! Lol

    Angela, I wanted to let you know how wonderful I think all of your quilts are. Thanks to you, I've picked up another craft that I really want to start. With that being said, "Where do I start?" I took my first class on 3/25/18 where I learned how to cut and put a block together. I think I should start out slow. I've watched a lot of your shows, which one do you think would be good for a "first timer"?

    Thank you Angela for all your awesome guidance in learning fmq! I think I would be bald by now if it wasn’t for you. (I would opt for throwing my machine, but it’s a sit down long arm....yea, guess that’s not going anywhere! Lol!). I just did a dresdon window quilt and quilted all the negative areas with the teardrop/echo....all the while heading you say, “and echo, echo, echo!” The serpentine is one I have complications with but I love the look!! I’ll keep practicing until I conquer!! The other favorite of mine is the feather!!! Can’t wait for next weeks lesson!!! TY again for all you do!!!

    I am absolutely loving the quilt along! I feel so much more accomplished and confident in my quilting. Idea for the next quilt along (please say they’ll be another): whole cloth quilt. It would be fun to see how you tackle that.

      There will be another! I think a wholecloth sounds fun, we will have to wait and see!

    Thanks Angela for these videos. I cannot believe how much they have helped. I also cannot believe how much better I have gotten with practice, practice and more practice. The one thing I am not certain of is how to travel from one design to another. Can you show us how you travel from one design to another? Do you stop, cut the thread and start again at another place or is it better to just keep going somehow. Thanks again for your time.

    • @AngelaWaltersfmq
      @AngelaWaltersfmq  6 років тому

      Of course, I will work that into a future video. I don't like to cut thread so I will use traveling along the seam to get from one area to another. Hope that makes sense!

    Amanda...you're videos and lessons are so encouraging for quilters of all levels. Thanks for the gift if giving your talents away and support. This FMQ Challenge is such a blast to follow. I would love to know how big your crew is and what type of Time Management and Planning do you follow. You seem so organized and well prepared. Do you have a film crew and director? Keep up the great work!! ~ Kathy Ray

    • @AngelaWaltersfmq
      @AngelaWaltersfmq  6 років тому +2

      I don't have a crew for my tutorials. I pretty much do everything myself, which takes longer that it should. But I don't mind because I am having a blast. For the Midnight Quilt Show, I do have a crew.

    Love all your videos and have learned A LOT! Along with getting courage to try more. My question is do you have any suggestions for lighting in order to see the stitching better (so don’t overlap). I have a long arm and am enjoying progressing but find lighting a challenge especially on some prints (vs solids). Thank you!

    Hi Angela, I am finally quilting a king size quilt, I’ve been looking at it since last Sept. well, my questions is I would like to finish the outside border with the wavy lines. I don’t think I can run it all the way down from end to end (across from side to side) can you suggest how to do it from inside of border to outside of border?

    I can't get over how generous you are with your time to produce all these videos for us! We all certainly appreciate it. I actually might be able to do the C curves! Serpentine lines are, as yet, not even something I can doodle on paper satisfactorily but I will persevere, as I quite like the look of them especially in between the curvy lines. In your email, you linked up to a DVD "Start Free-motion Quilting with Angela Walters" I would love to buy this but would greatly prefer a digital download as my only DVD player is wonky. Do you have any plans to convert it for digital download? Thanks again.

      I am so glad that you find the videos helpful, I truly enjoy making them and I don't mind how long it takes as long as it's helpful! Unfortunately I don't have any plans to make them a digital download.....but I will let you know if that changes!

      Just to clarify. I did not mean these UA-cam videos. I meant the DVD "Start Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters". I would love to get it but it costs as much to ship to Canada as the price. I would be happy to pay for the digital download to save myself shipping costs (and you the cost of preparing for shipping.

    Ok, so I was taught that starting in the center of the quilt and working towards the outer perimeter helps to lessen the puckers in the quilt sandwich, I see all the machine Quilter’s meandering all over...doesn’t that create puckers? Please help me understand how to handle a LARGE quilt on a home sewing machine without getting puckers in the quilt sandwich, thank you. Also, I’ve been quilting for many years but I’m new to your channel.

    Great eye candy and thanks for sharing.
    One question I have is how to make my different fmq designs stand out from each other. I've tried several of your designs and suggestions but unless I quilt it to death 😊 they all just blurr together.
    Cheers Angela and thanks for all that you do!

      I assume you need to vary the density of the lines: quilt a pattern with the lines 1/2" apart and when you change to a different pattern make it a different scale, maybe 1" apart.

    • @AngelaWaltersfmq
      @AngelaWaltersfmq  6 років тому +3

      That's correct, if they have different densities, they will stand out from each other!

    How do you choose your thread color? I just make a quilt top with colors similar to the one in the back ground (a town square with black blocks and border and batik strips) and I can't choose a color to quilt with! I think I'll do black thread in the black blocks, but not sure if I should even use two different colors. Help!

      Hi I am quilting for very first time and advice was to choose a bobbin colour to match backing of quilt and change your top thread as and when so I bought a few reels of bread to match and contrast with blocks. If you use the same colour you are less likely to see mistakes of course!

    • @juliekaine3142
      @juliekaine3142 6 років тому +1

      And of course I meant thread not bread!! Whoops!

    So far, can only manage serpentine lines with Squiggy. Having trouble due to not being able to accommodate any other sizing than the 2" and 3" on the ruler. Any suggestions how I can adapt? Thanks!!!

    • @AngelaWaltersfmq
      @AngelaWaltersfmq  6 років тому +1

      I couldn't think of a way to make a serpentine line ruler that would work for all sizes of borders, so i picked the 2 most common sizes that I like to quilt the serpentine lines in. Thanks for your support!

    I am so enjoying this challenge and all your videos. I made a crazy quilt with a shashing around each block and a 5 inch boarder. I’m going to quilt myself but I’m not sure how to move from block to shashing. Do you quilt all the blocks first or do blocks and shashing. Am I over thinking all of this??? Please advise as i’m Overwhelmed planning this out. My blocks are 12”, shashing is 1 1/2”. 4 blocks across and 4 down. Shashing is black.

    • @sonyakoresky
      @sonyakoresky 6 років тому

      MeMe Fraser I am learning too and no expert, but I suggest whatever overwhelms you the least. For me that is one block at a time and borders after. Whatever works for you is best, try all the things!

    What stitch length do you recommend for fmq?

    • @AshelyPlays

      Bea Gagliano Zero. You are moving the fabric with a domestic machine or the machine with a longarm so you are creating the stitch length.
