Baby Backups: Bond Arms vs. NAA

  • If all-American, pint-sized handguns are on your wish list, the field of options can be instantly narrowed to two top choices - Bond Arms and North American Arms. But which one should you choose? Guns.com breaks down the specs, designs, calibers, and more to help make the right choice for each shooter.
This may look like a head-to-head of apples and oranges, but in the grand scheme of small-frame pocket guns, Bond and NAA stand alone. Though both companies also offer a short line of semi-automatic pistols, our focus here will be on the bread and butter of both companies. What we have is a derringer-style two-shooter in the Bond versus a miniature revolver in the North American Arms.
Both are built of stainless steel with quality construction right here in America. Bonds are built in Granbury, Texas, and NAA comes out of Provo, Utah. The majority of Bond models use a full trigger guard, though a few guns have exposed triggers. NAA, meanwhile, features an open spur-style trigger, whereby everything is compact, rounded, snag-free, and nearly impossible to print.

I've had a pair of the NAA .22 mini revolvers since the mid 1980's. They've saved my life in April of 1988, and just after dawn on Memorial Day morning, 2017. They are all I carry for my defense, and so far I've reached 71 years of age, thanks to these little guns b being so small, they are ALWAYS on me. No matter how I'm dressed. With CCI stingers, they will do the job!

@@scottrichmond3400 Without going into specifics, I was at that time carrying without a permit because the People's Republik Of Maryland did not have a CCW for us civilians. So I chose to carry illegally. One night while camped on the Appalachian Trail near the intersection of the AT and the Big Devil Stairs trail a wacko tried to invade my camp at night. I don't know what he wanted, but he was dressed in all black and a ski mask and wielding a large knife. One warning shot from the NAA that made a huge orange muzzle blast in the dark, and sounded like a much bigger gun, sent him running off through the woods. I packed. up and snuck off in the opposite direction. At daybreak, a hit the trail out of there.
On Memorial Day morning 2017 just after dawn, I was on the road back to my home in Georgetown Texas from visiting my daughter and grand daughter in Mission Viejo California. I had stopped for the night at Las Cruses New Mexico at a Motel 6. Hit the road at 5am. About 7am the other side of El Paso by a little town Ft. Hancock Texas, I had to use the rest stop rest room. deserted desert in the middle of nowhere kind of place right on the border of Mexico.
While in the restroom, two young illegals tried to carjack me, telling me they were taking my truck, give them the keys or they would kill me. Both were brandishing knives, so I pulled and pointed my gun right in the nearest guys face, about 6 or 7 feet away. Soon as the gun came out, both fled the rest room at high speed, ran back towards the border, which at that point was only about 200-300 yards away. I got back in my truck and finished going home. By 2015 we had moved to Texas to retire, and both my wife and I had got our Texas carry permits. Both of us carry NAA mini revolvers.
Both times I think the unexpected gun being pointed changed everything. They realized immediately they did not have an unarmed victim on their hands, and neither wanted to be shot with even a little gun. I went on about my life.

I've carried the NAA 22LR for over 6 years now. Although I've yearned for a derringer, I've come to the conclusion that in a high stress situation where I would have to use my "firecracker", I don't trust 2 shots being enough. At close range, a 22LR is just as lethal as a larger caliber round, and 5 shots are definitely more lethal than 2.
I have lil' firecracker on me at all times, and my CW EDC is a Beretta Nano when I leave the house. Combined with my Victronix pocket knife, when asked once if I was armed, my response gave my questioner a shock.
    "Heavily", I replied.

Better than a sharp word, when facing a hostile trespasser.
don't fire until you see the whites of his eyes (not a terrible aiming point, depending upon what needs to be done).
Drop 2 on him, and he'll remember that he left the stove on or something.

When I ankle carry the NAA , it is so comfortable and lightweight that sometimes I forget that I have it concealed onto my ankle. I own the NAA smallest one they make. It’s about the size of my car keys, extremely easy to forget you’re carrying it. I’ve thought about getting Bond, as they have more stopping power, and because of the bigger format (grip) have better accuracy. I must admit I am impressed with your accuracy with the NAA .22, my range tests have been an eye opening realization that it is worthless if they are more than 5’ away from you. Your accuracy at 5 yards was impressive!

You'll need to practice more INSTICTIVE STYLE shoot'n, like Special Forces, trying to hold steady for accuracy on a target is tooo long of a focused strain to control hand, finger muscles on such a weapon for most ppl to again good accuracy. The instinctive style, just like snap shooting for fast grouse, woodcock in tight quarters, Whitetail being jumped, Bow or Gun hunting, you learn to just be more aware of your body's/arm, hand, etc location and firing when you feel yer on target. I've friends who were Seals, Spec Forces, from Nam into the 90's, and they say we train to be able to hit head shots WITHOUT LOOKING, OTHER THAN SOME PERIFERAL VISION " SOMETIMES! ", do some research and start practicing more, use an air BB pistol, airsoft, to save $, and it will come together for yeh, just RELAX N FEEL IT, our SUBCONSCIOUS brains actually know what exact time it is, where all parts of our bodies are in relationship to all around us at every second, yeh just have to make the effort to become more usefully connected to it.
Fighter Pilots " yes I've a few of them as old friends as well from A-6's -F-15's, 16's " and as the Spec Forces guys say, GET IN THE SLOT, ZONE, is what they call lucid, functional, DAYDREAMING, that's the connection to
accessing those abilities, so get in your zone, Ayeh

I saw a previous video of hers showing the Bond Arms 357/38 cal. Impressed with her coverage I went to a sporting arms store and examined the Bond Arms 357/38 and a NAA 5 shot revolver 22mag and 22 cal swing out 5 shot cylinder. I was so impressed with them fit and finish that I purchased both. On the range practice with both shows differences in the trigger let off and hand hold recoil behavior. Result is both are excellent and impact where I aim it just takes a steady hand and about 10 rounds each to be consistent. Both of these are very well made, no junk here!

I have them both. I have the Bond Arms in 9mm since I have more 9mm than any other caliber, and in these times of ammo shortages, I don't want to have to hunt down more 45LC, 410 or 357. I also have two NAA mini-guns. One in 22LR and the other in 22mag. The NAA in 22mag is my daily backup carry gun. It fits nicely in a small pocket in my pants that is really supposed to be knife pocket. It's also great to have if I'm wearing shorts while working in the yard. I don't even notice it's there.

The NAA revolvers are true pocket jewelry. I own two of them (.22LR in the "regular" 1.125-inch, and a 2.5-inch Sheriff model in .22WMR), but I rarely carry either.
When things quiet down some, I would like a Bond just to have.
For me, pocket-carry is covered by my Kel-Tec P32, with a Seecamp .32 also available on standby. If I really want small, the Bauer .25 somewhere in my safe can come out to play, too. ;-)
EDIT: February, 2022, I'm really looking at the Bond Arms Cowboy Defender to supplement the "old-West"-type guns I've accumulated, including a Taylors Smoke Wagon, a SxS coach gun, and a Winchester lever gun.
The Kel-Tec P32 mentioned above as a pocket pistol, has largely been replaced by a Ruger LCP-MAX.

I bought a Ranger II you featured and love it. You can buy a .22 LR cylinder for these, by sending it to NAA for fitting. I did that and now I can shoot any size rimfire from .22 Magnum to .22 short. Love it, super high quality, excellent fit and finish. With the Ranger II, swapping cylinders only take a few seconds with nothing to take apart. Just slide one off and slide the other in, no other parts to remove. Sweet.

I use both! Three NAA Mini Revolvers, two .22 LR with 1 1/8" barrels which I carry as a pair, one .22 Magnum with 1 5/8" barrel, and two Bond derringers. One Stinger 9mm stainless and one .45 Colt/.410 2 1/2". Both rather powerful little chunks of steel. The derringer is the last word in putting a powerful caliber in a very small package. You cannot create the same size-to-power ratio in any other handgun type. Which is probably why they've remained very popular since the mid 19th century. And I'm especially fond of the old High Standard Derringer in .22 Magnum as well.

I I smiled when you said "up close and personal," because that is exactly what I tell my friends who question why I got one. There are times when my other CC guns are just too large to conceal in places, especially in warm weather. It's a piece I can carry in my pocket, (definitely need to wear a good belt), when I'm wearing shorts. I also often carry it in the car in case of car-jackers. I have a number of good 45 acp, 38, and 9mm guns, but I like to carry this baby in addition because it may be easier to pull it out of my pocket than to reach around and grab my larger CC pieces. There's no downside to this piece. Who can argue that a mini hand shot gun is handy. It's like being able to carry my Taurus Judge in my pocket. In the winter I load it with 45 Long Colt to make sure of good penetration if someone is wearing a heavy coat. Most of the time I load it with Winchester or Federal 410 "Defender" rounds. It's also good with bird shot if you're walking in areas where you are likely to come across a slithery critter. Again, there really is no downside. It's not my primary CC weapon, but I usually have it on me in addition to my 9mm.

I got the Rowdy on sale for $269 and It kindof defeated the purpose of a cheap gun to then go out and buy 7 barrels for like $1,200 dollars but I did it anyways! 🤷‍♂️ It’s cool to have a 2nd (or 3rd) pistol in all my pistol calibers backed up with a derringer. I got the grips with the clip for the NAA 22mag and keep that in my front pants pocket it looks like a knife. The folding grips take too long to deploy for self defense applications. Both are well made options and at least are good backups for your main CC pistols or together actually could be a decent little 7 shot combo. 🤷‍♂️👍🏻

NAA 22lr is quite popular in South east asia, plus revolver have a lower taxes than a 22lr single stack pistols. Because civilian only can carry 5-10 bullets, they were thought to shoot carefully and sparingly to make shure to shoot if you really need to. I have been carrying the NAA 22 Mag with the folding grip for years. Anyone that thinks it isn't suited for self defense really doesn't understand the power it delivers. I have found it is more accurate if I don't use the sights. I aim along the side of the barrel. It made all the difference in accuracy. As for the Bond Arms...I didn't care for it. The grip is an odd shape that doesn't fit my hand, and I have larger than average hands. And unless they have re-engineered the trigger, you have to squeeze the very bottom tip. Pressing the middle of the trigger won't work. Just my two cents.

Rugers LCP Max is SUCH a better backup gun than the bond arms. 12 rounds of .380 acp, and the ability to quickly and easily reload if you carry an extra magazine. It's smaller, lighter, has night sights, laser capable, and it's only about 100 bucks more. It's honestly a no brainer. The bond arms Derringer is a fun little toy, but it's just not very practical.

The newer NAA versions offer a swing out cylinder similar to traditional revolvers. Much simpler and faster to reload than the original versions where you have to remove the cylinder and hopefully not drop it in the dirt to reload.

I have both, but when small size deep concealment is needed, I prefer my Beretta 950's, 9 rounds that can be fired in an instant with the single action trigger is superior to my NAA's IMO. The Bond is big and heavy, but useful when you need something somewhat compact that can produce a relatively big wallop due to the calibers available. Both wonderful firearms that in addition to functionality give you the extra benefit of ownership that comes from something that's so solid and well made.

    • @garydouglas9413
      @garydouglas9413 3 роки тому

@thrash, clang & bang The issue is whether two rounds fired from such a short barrel (therefore having low muzzle velocity) will stop the bear prior to its killing or maiming you. Animals do not attack to steal your cell phone or wallet. They attack because 1) you startled them or scared them which infers that you are close to them 2) they feel you are threatening them or their young which means they will be determined and not "scared away" 3) they consider you prey and intend to devour you. There are numerous accounts (not just legends or stories) of dead grizzly bears found with a bullet in the brain or heart from which the bear died - after it had killed the shooter. If you are in range of one of these 'baby backups', you are too close. That being said, there is nothing wrong with a 'back-up' and it is better than a short stick. Just don't forget it is a back-up and don't be complacent because you are protected by that 'backup'.

    • @garydouglas9413
      @garydouglas9413 3 роки тому

@thrash, clang & bang Not really. I just made a comment that is accurate the vast majority of the time. I made the comment because the video mentioned the small guns as self protection in bear country. I didn't throw shade on anyone. My comment was a caution. I didn't even attack the video in my initial comment. I agree with you that primary guns can fail, which is why I said "there is nothing wrong with a backup..." and I urged people not to be complacent. Avoid the bears. Marvel at their awesomeness from a safe distance. If it makes me intense to caution people against a false sense of security, so be it.

It fits a watch pocket, or panama pants, sweat pants pocket. I can take it places I'm not supposed to discreetly too. It also doesn't create much collateral damage in close quarters, like terminating a predator at close range middle of the night wedged in an egg box of a coop full of frightened hens. It's also very loud for a small gun, and has served to stop aggressive dogs with it's bark. LOL
