Yes i thought this tutorial was really good ,the guy presenting it was oh so good ,he took his time in explaining ,thats a bonus ,some people just talk about everything else and you have to weave in and out of what their saying to get the info ,and guess what ,no music in the background while he was talking ,a real bonus ,very informative ,thank you . please keep it going this way .Focusrite
Glad you're loving the Pro 40! Go back to right around 10:00 in this video, and watch how he set up his Headphone Mixes. You can do it the same way with the Pro 40.
HI, You can absolutely do that. In mix control routing menu, set the output (called DAW 1&2) to 2 analog out of your interface (outputs 3&4 for example), and use the cables of your choice to connect to the inputs on your Lexicon. Run 2 more cables from the Lexicon's outputs to the inputs on your interface (outputs 1&2 for example), and you will hear the effected signal. You can also do the same routing with your SPDIF ins and outs on each unit to keep your analog ins and outs free for recording.
Hi, You will need a DAW to do any recording/mixing/editing on your computer. The included Mix Control software is used for customizable Audio Routing, but it doesn't actually interact directly with recorded audio. If you are new to DAWS though, the Pro 24 and Pro 24DSP both come bundled with Ableton Live Lite, which is a great way to get started.
Hi, Typically, you get the best results having the first part of your signal path to be the master clock, but if you wanted to use the Liquid 56 as the master, you can plug the Liquid into the "Word Clock" input on the back of the OctoPre.
You want to make sure you install the latest version of Mix Control software. In logic navigate to preferences >audio>devices> make sure your input & output device is set to Saffire ( or whatever interface you are using), create a mono audio track and set the input to the corresponding input on your interface. Engage record enable on your audio track in logic then begin recording.
Although not fully released you can get the latest beta version of MixControl, as well as the latest USB 2.0 drivers for the Scarlett range from our beta website. Just google 'focusrite beta'.
The Scarlett Plugin Suite are RTAS/VST/AU plugins, so you'll need to use them in your DAW. MixControl is designed for routing audio and creating headphone mixes, so you'll still want to mix your songs in your existing recording software.
If you want more headphones outputs you are best off getting a headphone amp and connecting this to a pair of the line outputs on the back of the unit. You can then assigne a headphone mix to these line outputs.
Iprov music the way I do it is I mute the input on the DAW (protools in my case but doesn't matter which) so we can hear direct from interface but then setup a send which is set to to pre fade with the effects on.
Man, what an excellent and informative review. You did a great job on this and even though I own this unit, you make me want to set it back up again and start recording. I love the sound of your recording and thanks again for the very well done review. Marc Trainor.
Hi, It's not that one is better than the other, but this is just the easiest way to set up our devices when using Optical Ports, as it requires less cabling.
You will only be able to connect this unit with a FireWire connection. If your laptop has an ExpressCard slot you can get a FireWire adapter, but if you don't you will not be able to use this interface on your laptop.
My question : @ 3:52 he connected a compressor from line out 6 and back to line in 6. So basically if you connect a mic into the xlr input on ch6, run the signal out from line out 6 into the comp, back to the line in 6 (which is right next to the xlr again), to create an insert. Is that possible? And if so, would that be a pure analogue insert chain or is there A/D and D/A conversion between the mic pre to the line out?
hmm maybe something that could be thought about adding to future products?. obviously since i have the scarlet device installed its overriding all other sound and volume features, and when i click the volume icon and go into mixer then levels there is still only one slider for volume where most devices would have many sliders or at least a advanced feature with eq settings.
Unfortunately Saffire MixControl does not support hosting VST or AU plug-ins. Some video players have built in graphic equalizers, so double check there isn't one built into your player.
I really like your open back rack unit .I'm unable to find one just like it do you remember where you obtained it by chance ???? really informative video keep up the good work
Hi, If you've tried all of the basic troubleshooting steps, such as using a new USB cable and port, and Restoring Factory Defaults in Mix Control, contact us at our Support Page and we can help you further.
Cool tutorial, thanks heaps! I'm still a bit confused as to how you actually USE a compressor if you plug it out of and back into line 6...excuse my ignorance on this...how do you activate it say, on a lead vocal BEFORE it gets recorded in your DAW (Logic 9 in my case)??? Must be REALLY simple but I can't seem to work it out!!!
Great video, one question, where are all the headphones coming out from? Do you have a headphone amp, or what? Please could you clarify, I have a scarlett 18i20 with 2 headphones outputs and I dnt know how to make several headphone mixes. Thanks a lot!
Very helpful. Just wondering why you wouldn't use the Liquid 56 as the source / master clock / sync unit instead of the other one. Is the clock on the other unit better than the Liquid 56?
Very Gud Video. I want To ask This One Question. Im Buying This Focusrite 56, But My laptop dont Have firewire . How will i get it connected to my laptop?
I wished I could figure out a way to use the zero latency while tracking with mix control, but be able to unmute the tracks im recording (in logic pro) during play back to hear the pre-roll during punch ins. If I am recording a band, and they want to punch in, I have to figure out how to unmute (to hear pre-roll) and then mute the channels so they will not get no latency during the punch. There has to be some sort of easy routing to fix this problem. Would love to just hit record, and not worry about using mute in my DAW to avoid latency.
Have you recorded the band together in the same room, or dubbed it one instrument at a time? Bcz I wonder how you solved the mic spill problem in a room like that. Thank you!
Hi, Great tutorial. I'm using a Pro 40 and want to buy an extra one to double my inputs. Can a link them through FireWire or do I have to use an optical cable? Will the extra eight channels appear in the Saffire mixer and in Ableton Live and/or Logic?
Question please. On this video (at 10:30) the part about sending headphone mixes. You can't do this on the Scarlett 18i20 correct? the outs on the the back of the 18i20 won't give out a headphone signal correct? Only 2 headphone inserts on front.
I have a question I record in protools but I turn on the mix control before I record but when I record my vocals it sounds staticky why is that what can I do to correct this error.?
Is it possible to put the sound you hear from headphones (from the computer, such as if i were listening to this youtube video through the focusrite headphones jack) through a lexicon mx400 or other racks and then be able to hear it (as was said before) through the headphones with the added effects/etc?
If you using line 6 out for compression, how are you doing both the snare, and kick. I would think this would require two outs and ins for 2 channels of compression right? I have an ACP88 and it looks like I will probably have to waste a couple channels of compression by using more line in puts. Wished I had a to utilize my channels of compression with out sacrificing my inputs. I have an MKII as well.. Maybe have to trade in for a Dynamic. :(
Just got the Pro 40 and loving it. Question, when setting up a headphone mix in Mix Control for a vocalist, if the artist wants more kick or snare or whatever coming from the DAW, do I have to go back into the DAW and change levels, or can I set it all up to be ran just out of Mix Control. Seeing how the project wouldn't be fully mixed yet.
Would you be able to just run adat cables to both the ISA and the octopre and be ok? for instance if you want to use two external adat preamp options that only have adat on them.
The Big Question(s) for me is: What kind of audio rack system is holding all of the Focusrite gear? Where can I buy and/or figure out how to DIY me something similar?? Want.
how do i add a graphic equalizer to the scarlett mix control software? im not using a daw im just watching a movie online but its way too bassey so i want to change the eqs. i cant find an equalizer anywhere :(
Is there any way i can use a graphic equalise through the saffire pro Mix control... m talking about any insert in the mixcontrol to direct eq the output from the saffire
Pardon the seemingly stupid question I'm going to ask. I'm considering buying the Pro 40. I'm completely new to audio interfaces and DAW editing software, for ex., Ableton, Pro Tools, Cubase etc. I have nothing at the moment. If I buy the Pro 40 (alternatively the 24 DSP) will I still require some sort of DAW software? As I understand it, the software included is basically a computer-based mixing board? Thank you, anyone, in advance for helping me understand what I'm missing.
If it's only used in the Firewire Saffire line then why does the title of the video say Saffire AND Scarlett? Is this not the software that come with t Scatlett 18i20?
Hi, I'm struggling with one thing. I have the saffire 56 and cannot for the life of me get the delay compensation to work for hardware inserts on pro tools 10. Is there any guides any where?
If you are still having problems, please contact our support team via the contact form on our main website. They will be happy to help you with any problems you are having.
hey guys so i have a 18i20 which is super awesome, until i want to record, using rode NT2A, phantom power is on, using xlr to xlr cable, line switch is off, i'm using input 2 on the front panel, my gain is at about 3/4, my master is at 1/2 and i can barely just hear anything, lpfilter off, and 0dB... how do i route it with mix control? i got my main out working perfect, wether i'm using Ableton or watching video clips or any other media, my only problem is setting up the mics
hey i didnt saw the most important part , how do u record , i tried recording , hooked up my akg p220 condensor to the pre amp, turned on gain and the phantom power , but when im recordig, i dont get any frequencies :( i use logic 9 pro also
I am looking into buying the Scarlett 18i6 for my home studio. I really like the design of it but need to know if my DAW (Ableton Live 9) can get all 8 inputs (pick between 1/2 or mono for each) to record a live band like you have done with your set up. Any information would be great, I really want to buy this product but can't until I figure this out. Thank you in advanced! BTW Great video!
+Seth Taylor (RezNikTaylor) You are asking if your DAW can handle that? A full version of any of the main DAWs should handle as many tracks as your computer can process without latency run wild. i run 16 simultaneous lines into Saffire Pro40 & Octopre....and Logic would take 4 times that....my Mac might be a bit taxed by 64 simultaneously, and i cant think of an instance when i would attempt that. You should be able to do 8 mono inputs simultaneously simple as pie.
Hello - Good evening - Could you help me with the following problem. I have the Saffire Interface 56 - I need to use an external compressor to make the I / O connection. Connections: OUT 3 of the interface to IN of the compressor - IN of the compressor to OUT 3 of the Interface. DAW used Logic Pro X - Is there any specific binding to do in Control MIX?
Hi, here´s my situation: when I run the Saffire Mix Control the legend "connected" appears on the firewire driver slot in the device status section. Things change when I open my DAW (Nuendo)...the legend became "In Use". Is there something wrong? Thank you
This is a very nice tutorial but i have a question. I use the Focusrite Pro40. What happens if the singer wants to hear some reverb in his headphone mix? i know that in order not to hear latency , i have to MUTE his channel in my DAW so that he hears the direct signal. So what can i do?
Hi. The best thing to do is to create an axillary track in your DAW for the reverb, and mute the recorded track. That will allow your singer to hear their direct signal with a reverb mix.
At 3:17 you say that you can use an 18i6 to add an additional 8 inputs via adat optical. The 18i6 only shows optical in but no optical out. How would you accomplish the hook up of the two devices???
I'm a proud Saffire Pro 24 DSP owner/user. It's an amazing interface. Mix control is really powerful. But I have a question: When I activate the effects section, the compressor for example, it get's recorded but i just want to hear it in the actual monitor mix. Is it possible to setup the DSP Compressor for monitoring only?
Hi, The FX on the Pro 24 DSP directly affects the input signal, so unfortunately, you won't be able to use them for monitoring without recording the result.
can I use the reverb only for input 1 ? As I track the vocals in my DAW with the track status to Mute, to avoid latency. I hear the reverb on the other tracks played in the DAW during recording. can I fix this ?FocusriteTV
i think it could.. but he was syncing 3 things so each unit has to sync with a diff. way.. one uses WC in.. etc.. adat sync and internal.. i think... im bout to get a 3rd sync unit to my 56 so...
Another option could be: Liquid saffire set to internal Octo pre connected to adat 1 (liquid saffire) and sync to adat Isa 828 connected to adat 2 (liquid saffire) and syn to word clock Am I right?
+Claudio Rotstein Welp, i have the Saffire 40pro & Octopre. i also sync to the Octopre. Reason: Without the Octo, you aren't syncing with anything, so it can be controlled via the software. Up to 96k When you add an Octopre, i think it is simpler to set the additional channels to sync to the controller that the reverse. i can tell you, there is nothing on the Pro 40 or Liquid 56 to set syncing with anything. It is more about the Octopre sending its "hi, its me" message to the interface. Then, and very importantly, you must make sure your sync speed is the same on all hardware, and on every place in your DAW that it is to be entered...sometimes they can seem a bit hidden.
I'm using persons studio one and I'm kinda new to using this software and interface. all i wanna get done is send the playback track from studio one, through mix control to hear it through the headphones for vocal tracking. how is this accomplished?
Sorry...I'm quite new to recording using my focusrite. I'm sure this is a pretty daft question...but when I try to get a headphone mix through a snake coming out of my saffire liquid 56, I can't seem to get the mix nearly loud enough for the drummer to play along to. Can anybody explain how I should be routing this please? Also, I'm not entirely sure how to route multiple headphones to the snake. I'm using this snake. www.studiospares.com/snakes/snake-164-xlrjk-30m/invt/588090 - I run cubase 7.
Can I hook up a Art Pro MPAII to the Safire 26 and use the 26 for the compressor? or stick to the Safire plugins to use for compression? and do I use the plug ins in protools?
Can anybody please tell me how i can Logic X and that Sapphire use the same input and output Numbers/Names when using both ADAT connectors only? I got input starting from 13 or so, and output begins from 1/2. I mean i can label them alike, but not really route them physically in Logic X or did i forget something? Normally i should be able to use all analog inputs/outputs plus the ADAT ones in a row.
I have the Saffire Pro 40 and i dont know if its me or if its thensystem but when i connect my monitors to the 2 white highlighted Speaker Outputs when i play something to listen it sound like theres an eco or some type of delay barely visible but u can notice its there? any type of help would help ALOTTT.......
You are processing the signal in the digital domain to mix it, meaning there is latency, AD, DSP, and DA latency. Only an all analog signal chain can be truly zero latency. Calling the mix feature zero latency is misleading, even if the latency is small (sub 2ms @ 48kHz should be achievable these days, less for higher sample rates). Please don't make me measure this on the bench and prove it. That being said, I like my Safire Pro 40 a lot, great versatile interface.
Saffire and Scarlett Mix Control and Focusrite control can be downloaded from the 'Downloads' section of our website here - downloads.focusrite.com/focusrite

Right then did i some thing as in the set up on a windows PC i am just a mere mortal and only have a pc windows 7 64 bit running ,,,,, i do have 32.0 GB Ram though and quad lintel water cooled thing e bog ,,, lol i suppose i best get a Mac one day if it,s true you can get faster latency i have a Saffire pro 24 DSP . and still can not get rid of the bloody ticks and pops...
Make sure your drivers are all up-to-date. Scan for malware and viruses that could be using resources in the background. Don't run stuff that you aren't using. Try running DPC Latency Checker (free). Go through your running processes and stop those which you don't need to see if it makes any difference (Google them first...). Look at your services too and stop any which are safe to stop and that you don't need. Process Hacker is free, from Sysinternals. Be more careful here, for example, Acronis (if you use that) has a disk service which will make your PC unbootable if you prevent that from running - as before, Google. If DPC Latency checker is still all green, but you are still getting pops and clicks, it's likely hardware. This isn't an exhaustive list - you may need to find an MCSE person. Windows is 'fun' with stuff like this. :-(
Shift and click the monitor preset to grey allowed my sound to come though the HP. No other tutorial mentioned that. Thanks a million.
You literally just made my morning. Saved my whole setup in Logic with the mix control and the mkii dynamic running ADAT. THANK YOU.
thanks, i just got y ls56 so this is a really helpful video

For anyone that wants to jump.... Saffire mix control tutorial starts @ 4:31
Glad you're loving the Pro 40!
Go back to right around 10:00 in this video, and watch how he set up his Headphone Mixes. You can do it the same way with the Pro 40.
HI,
You can absolutely do that.
Yes the Saffire Pro 14 is compatible with the M Audio Key Studio 25 via Midi cables or via usb connected to the CPU
excellent video, man. really well done, and informative

The Saffire MixControl and Scarlett MixControl software have identical functionality. This video is relevant for operating both programs.
Although not fully released you can get the latest beta version of MixControl, as well as the latest USB 2.0 drivers for the Scarlett range from our beta website. Just google 'focusrite beta'.

Hi thanks, for uploading this now, i understand a little more about mixcontrol capabilities
your help would be greatly appreciatted... Thanks
okies i got true , i love the pre amp , damn thts sweeet , voxs sounding bess, and im already started in my new studio, thanks
Hi,
You can use 2 ADAT devices with the LS56, but you will also need to run a BNC Word Clock Cable to your second ADAT Device
If you want more headphones outputs you are best off getting a headphone amp and connecting this to a pair of the line outputs on the back of the unit. You can then assigne a headphone mix to these line outputs.
Thanks Mark caffoor, I will check that out!

Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 vs Saffire Pro 40 (thunderbolt ) ? which one is better to use with Pro tools 11 + iMac/mac pro ?
My question : @ 3:52 he connected a compressor from line out 6 and back to line in 6. So basically if you connect a mic into the xlr input on ch6, run the signal out from line out 6 into the comp, back to the line in 6 (which is right next to the xlr again), to create an insert. Is that possible? And if so, would that be a pure analogue insert chain or is there A/D and D/A conversion between the mic pre to the line out?
cool thanks I have a look and try it out. Cheers
well done
hmm maybe something that could be thought about adding to future products?. obviously since i have the scarlet device installed its overriding all other sound and volume features, and when i click the volume icon and go into mixer then levels there is still only one slider for volume where most devices would have many sliders or at least a advanced feature with eq settings.
Unfortunately Saffire MixControl does not support hosting VST or AU plug-ins. Some video players have built in graphic equalizers, so double check there isn't one built into your player.
In theory you can record up to 28 channels simultaneously using the LS56. This is 8 analogue, 2 S/PDIF, 16 ADAT, and 2 loopback.
The only Scarlett interface with the 'loopback' feature is the Scarlett 8i6, unfortunately all other Scarlett interfaces don't have this feature.
I really like your open back rack unit .I'm unable to find one just like it do you remember where you obtained it by chance ???? really informative video keep up the good work

Why do you choose to sync from the octopre and not the Saffire 56?
if i only have liquid 56 and octopre mkII can i have the liquid 56 as the clock master?
Hello - Good evening - Could you help me with the following problem. I have the Saffire Interface 56 - I need to use an external compressor to make the I / O connection. Connections: OUT 3 of the interface to IN of the compressor - IN of the compressor to OUT 3 of the Interface.
DAW used Logic Pro X - Is there any specific binding to do in Control MIX?
@FocusriteTV I understand the compressor is on input and output 6, but is it required to do anything in mix control to hear it?
hey, i want to use an other sample rate, but i can only choose 44.1KHz????
Hi,
In this case, you would have to use the 18i6 as the "Master Unit", and a device with Optical Outputs as the ADAT Device.
Hi,
The FX on the Pro 24 DSP directly affects the input signal, so unfortunately, you won't be able to use them for monitoring without recording the result.
can I use the reverb only for input 1 ? As I track the vocals in my DAW with the track status to Mute, to avoid latency. I hear the reverb on the other tracks played in the DAW during recording. can I fix this ?FocusriteTV
Hey! Great tutorial!!
Why is the Octopre the sync master? Can it be the Liquid Saffire?
Thanks!!!
I was wondering the same thing.
i think it could.. but he was syncing 3 things so each unit has to sync with a diff. way.. one uses WC in.. etc.. adat sync and internal.. i think...
im bout to get a 3rd sync unit to my 56 so...
Another option could be:
Liquid saffire set to internal
Octo pre connected to adat 1 (liquid saffire) and sync to adat
Isa 828 connected to adat 2 (liquid saffire) and syn to word clock
Am I right?
+Kilgore Trout Thanx!
I'm using persons studio one and I'm kinda new to using this software and interface. all i wanna get done is send the playback track from studio one, through mix control to hear it through the headphones for vocal tracking. how is this accomplished?
Hi,
It sounds like you need to set up your interface with Studio One, which you will find in the preferences menu.
Could you guys add french subtitles to your videos ? It would help french-speaking people like me a lot... Thank you for your feedback ! :)
Focusrite
Spent hours trying to workout how to hear my drum mics as I play before it goes to Logic. Still cannot make it work. it's driving me nuts.
Hi,
You should contact us at focusrite.com/answerbase/contact so we can give you more detailed help with Mix Control.
The tutorial is good But I find it distracting to keep showing our host since it is all about the gear and how to use it and not him.
Anyone else notice kick and snare channels were not labeled correctly.
Can I hook up a Art Pro MPAII to the Safire 26 and use the 26 for the compressor? or stick to the Safire plugins to use for compression? and do I use the plug ins in protools?
Did you get an answer on this? Wondering how to put a comp after the preamp and then into the A-D
+curtis Nystrom
never did
Can anybody please tell me how i can Logic X and that Sapphire use the same input and output Numbers/Names when using both ADAT connectors only? I got input starting from 13 or so, and output begins from 1/2. I mean i can label them alike, but not really route them physically in Logic X or did i forget something? Normally i should be able to use all analog inputs/outputs plus the ADAT ones in a row.
Have you discussed this with our tech support team yet? They can assist you with this - bit.ly/FocusriteSupport
Great rack... Where can I get one? Who makes them?
Hi, is focusrite scarlett 2i2 compatible with windows 8 64bit ? thank you for interesting..
Sorry for the delay.
It will work just fine with Windows 8.
Hi,
Contact us at focusrite.com/answerbase/contact with details of your setup so we can look into this for you.
That being said, I like my Safire Pro 40 a lot, great versatile interface.
where i can download focusrite mix control?
Saffire and Scarlett Mix Control and Focusrite control can be downloaded from the 'Downloads' section of our website here -

Study up brother, I'm just a hobbyist and understood most of it.
Your screen seems so high.
it's SO high. love the video though.
I can't watch this. Your eyes are too beautiful.
BUT WHY is it channel 13?!?! Shouldn't it be 11?! Whaaaat?!
Those acoustic though :/ horrible.
