I feel your pain. Even accents within Mandarin can be tough. I started out learning "Standard Mandarin" (which is based on Beijing Mandarin even though no one outside that region talks like that) because that's how my classes were taught, but then could barely understand anything my Taiwanese friends said. That's like learning American English then going to the UK. I learned their way of speaking eventually. Don't get me started on the "dialects." Mandarin is about as similar to Cantonese, Yue (Shangainese), Hakka, or Taiwanese/Fujianese/Minnanese as German is to Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, or French.

Actually, there isn't even a universal writing system for Chinese. There's the Traditional writing system and the Simplified writing system. China and Singapore use the Simplified writing system, and Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau use the Traditional writing system. Despite this, China has been using the Traditional writing system for over a thousand years, until around the 1950s.

I feel your pain. Even accents within Mandarin can be tough. I started out learning "Standard Mandarin" (which is based on Beijing Mandarin even though no one outside that region talks like that) because that's how my classes were taught, but then could barely understand anything my Taiwanese friends said. That's like learning American English then going to the UK. I learned their way of speaking eventually.
Don't get me started on the "dialects." Mandarin is about as similar to Cantonese, Yue (Shangainese), Hakka, or Taiwanese/Fujianese/Minnanese as German is to Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, or French.
@@fuckk-popandtiktok3388 Mandarin and dialects are different in pronunciation but same in writing (pretty much like the relationship between American English and British Enligh). Also, 99% of Chinese people can read write speak mandarin, so no way China is more divided than India in language.

Most countries of the West consider China (and Taiwan) to be "one cultural nation divided into two sovereign states". This is similar to their views regarding North Korea and South Korea.
Certainly, if we consider "sovereign states" to be countries, then Taiwan and China are two separate countries (officially named "the Republic of China" and "the People's Republic of China", respectively).
However, if we consider "cultural regions" to be countries, regardless of their political boundaries, then Taiwan and China are a single country under the name "China", though they are under separate administrations.
From the way that Paul has presented this video, he does not believe that Taiwan and China constitute a single country. This doesn't mean that he supports "Taiwanese Independence", it just means that he recognises the "Status Quo".

i was technically born in hong kong, in 1997 but i was raised in shanghai, but currently i live in los angeles and can speak fluent english without my chinese accent
