I bought this PFD two years ago. LOVE THIS PFD. A PFD that you like is a PFD that you will wear. I wear it all the time even during the year when you dont have to have one on up here in PA. I would even wear it while fishing streams with wader on. Very Comfortable and has a good amount of storage without me feeling like im wearing a duffle bag. Overall great PFD

Had mine 7 months now and agree with you 100%. Wanted an NRS but they weren't available, next one will be a Stohlquist, too. Tightlines!
I did a deep dive on PFD research, came down to the Stohlquist Keeper, and I love the tons of pockets it comes with!

Your honesty is one of the reasons I listen to you while I watch your videos. What an in-depth review of you PFD. The price is good and within reason. I hear from some people that they do not want to pay a lot for a PFD. I just mention, how much is your life worth if you fall out of your kayak and go unconscious. Will your cheap PFD save you or not. Some things are worth the money and a good PFD is one of those things. Thanks Chad.

I like the overall look of this pfd, but I think they could have made the pockets a little bigger and included dividers, there’s a lot of unused space in that area, but one thing I do look for in any pfd is the d ring on the back so I can easily hang it out to dry. Can’t wait for the patches Chad!
Chad nice informative video. That strap that gets caught on the fishing line trying putting an old baseball wristband over it. You can still access it by pushing it to the side and it covers the strap/buckle.
As I mentioned on IG, glad you're putting these videos together. I'll be in the market for a new pfd once I'm done upgrading a few other things. I did notice you no longer have a spot for your rescue knife.
It does, but I removed it to put the Velcro there

I have a Stohlquist Drifter, basically the same PFD without the storage pockets. Which makes it more compact and less bulky for a boater...
FYI Stohlquist also makes PFD to fit ladies too. Great review Chad 👏

I though I was being overly picky about the loop ends on my PFD so it was nice to hear someone else has the same frustration with them! The inflatables I'd like to hear more about. I've held off because of 1. Safety concerns 2. I like having phone, keys etc locked up in my PFD pockets where I can easily get to them.

I just picked up a Stohlquist Fisherman on clearance to replace my older Chinook, I like the velcro idea and may add that to it. Tight Lines Chad!

I’m a big fan of the Stohlquist Keeper. Pockets are bigger and similar build otherwise. Definitely comfortable.
Always good to see an unbiased review piece. Too many times in the fishing industry (more often than not, I'd say), UA-camrs (especially professional anglers) talk up something that is made by a sponsor of theirs. It is a total turn-off to me. Many are downright shameless. Keep the unbiased, uncensored reviews coming, and, as always, great video, Chad.

Love it Chad, i have been noticing another PFD. The chinook has been my go to. love my rogue fishing gear. Might look into this PFD, absolutely want to support military. Brother is still active officer and trying to get him into kayak fishing. he might appreciate a pfd like this.

I have been kayak fishing for 40 years and windsurfing for a about the same. I have found out that if you have to swim after your kayak in wind you cannot swim fast enough with a regular life preserver to catch up! This is why I use an inflatable with the manual option. I’ve been in this situation before and only in a river would I use a regular life preserver. You add a vest with all the pockets and features that are so convenient and take it off when ever a situation arises. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on this and look forward to your other product reviews!
In most cases most people can’t swim
fast enough to catch a kayak wearing any PFD. The more “reasons” that I can offer someone the wear one, the more likely we can get them to wear it. Thanks for pointing this out for folks that it may be a factor for, but most just need to wear the PFD to save their life should they need it. Keep in mind that in some states a manual inflate PFD is not acceptable as the primary PFD for kayaks.
Zippers have been my failure. After a season on saltwater and seldom using every zipper, they are stuck. So i do not put important stuff in a zippered pocket. Velcro is better. But now In use a toothbrush to brush my zippers frequently when done with water. Also, i tried out my PFD by jumping in a pool. Mine works.

The Stohlquist Fisherman PFD has a capture component for the shoulder straps. I think it's a pocket at the base of the strap on the chest. Ought to look there. Love my Fisherman
That’s only works if you have the PFD up under your chin, it also doesn’t work for the smaller straps that are actually more problematic, but that’s for pointing that out about the shoulder straps portion.

I'd like to see a thorough review of the Stohlquist Keeper PFD and especially the Wrapture torso and Cross-chest cinch features and how important you think each one is. Some of the Stohlquist PFDs have both of those features, and some have one or the other. If the Wrapture torso turns out to be a very good feature or turns out to be no big deal, then I can make a better decision. Same with the cross chest cinch. Don't know why they don't put the cross chest cinch on all of their models if it is so much more effective.
I just put one in my shopping cart to give it a shot for the next season being a bigger guy its hard to find a pfd

Hey Chad I like the the review of the stohlquist vest that you reviewed. What I don't like about that vest is the pillow top back. I have and love the Stohlquist Keeper pfd because of the flat back that is the full length of the back instead of the pillow top. For me and my high back seat Old Town Sportsman Big Water 132 PDL it is a perfect vest. Take a look at it and see what you think. I believe it would be the next model up in the lineup from the Pisces you reviewed. reviewed

I'm sure its been brought up, as far as the tabs, but you could slide some heat shrink onto the tabs to keep them out of the way.
Then you would just have an even bulkier tab. You can’t get it over both without cutting the stitching and disassembling the PFD
Marine Portable Radio or FMRS Radio both with Antenna and or Larger pocket for IPhone accessible to take CPR entry photos

Very instructive piece of info. Thanks. Any hint to chose the right size for somebody who cannot go to the store and wish to purchase online? My chest size (100 cm) fits within the range indicated for a Chinook NRS in size M (76-106cm) but what if I Wear a jacket or a dry suit?
You mention you’re size in the video so I’m using it as an opening to ask if you’re still doing Carnivore and ask if you were still keeping the weight off? I really enjoyed those videos as well!

You might be able to use Velcro sleeves over those tabs. I have seen sleeves like that use to wrap around wires and such.

I think if Stohlquist was geared more for fishing than military applications, they may have added a couple of the features that you pointed out that you wish it had... other than that, it looks like a pretty decent PFD... let's see what happens when you send your review to them tho

For the first issue sir have you tried heat shrink? Comes in all sizes and some have a sealant that activates as u heat it up shrinking it

I’ve been using a chinook the last couple of years and have found it difficult to lean forward for tools. Is this an issue with this pfd?
Not really but that’s also why I wear my shoulder straps a little looser

I have a design idea that would accommodate that. Basically it’s a blank slate and you can add pockets via a MOLLE or Velcro system.

Just an alternative view. A PFD is a life saving device and it may serve a person better if it was in fact used for this purpose first and foremost. It's not a Billboard, toolbox ,or man's purse. So consider the weight you add and the (Alterations ) made that may in some states make this PFD compromised for it's intended purpose. All the little gager's and stickers are " cool" looking but when dunked in Lake Erie "cool" isn't gonna save your butt. Just sayn'
Thanks for pointing this out as a point of consideration. For what it’s worth I have 10
years experience as a Navy Rescue swimmer and take all of this stuff into account. All of the patches, the Velcro and everything included is less that a pound.
Conversely, when I do videos and it the biggest thing you see, it’s also a billboard and when I spend over 300 days a year on the water, it’s also my toolbox. A PFD is a lifesaving device. A Fishing PFD is a fishing and life saving device. So, I pointed out the specifics on the fishing part and how I customized mine to use my platform to get a message out that I’m passionate about. That said, I do appreciate you pointing this out because some people
could overdo it and make their PFD a liability instead of an asset for saving their life

i tell ya Chad, their FLO is the best we have found for my bride and we have turned several other ladies on to it! i will be looking at this one very close for my next one.i wore their Ebb model for years.

Nope. That’s not true. I actually worked on acquisitions in the military and also did open purchase stuff as well, so what you’ve heard about “it always goes to the lowest bidder” isn’t even remotely true.
this is gonna sound ignorant as hell and thats alright everyone can bash me if ya'll would like but when i see pro bass guys in tournaments they only wear pfds when going from spot to spot then they take them off. why do kayak bass fishermen wear one 24/7 even in shallow water? they look so uncomfortable as well. how come you dont wear something like an inflatable mustang that will inflate if you touch water. just seems like over kill. I understand safety first but it just seems unnecessary to wear such bulky things. we wade in the middle of rivers and yet i see kayak-ers in the same water wearing these big ass pfds. is this a law or something? mid summer these would be hot as hell. just curious and trying to gain some knowledge and perspective. I mean we literally swim in rivers every summer from island to island and been doing so all my life. Proceed to rip me a new one just curious to why such bulky pfds in these 3 ft creeks and streams.

To flip and or become entangled, have a higher probability of hitting our head or hitting something that causes an injury that makes swimming more difficult or impossible. You said bass boat guys put them on when they are running from spot to spot or “underway”. For the most part kayak fisherman are always underway. Not wearing a PFD because you are in shallow water is just as dangerous. I’m not going to “rip you a new one” I just hope that if you actually wanted a real answer you take some of that into consideration.
