The loop at the bottom opposite side of the Velcro is actually a rod holding solution. The butt goes in the loop, and the Velcro strap goes over the rod. It’s been brought over from fly fishing vests. The rod is then held hands free diagonally across your body. The more you know…

I bought a Chinook and I like it a lot! I've always been surprised that even on hot summer days I still have never felt overheated wearing it and I have the forest green model. I have wanted to get the knife NRS makes but I had read some reviews that kept me from jumping off. Glad you guys mention PFDs because even decent swimmers can find themselves in a bad situation. There are a number of people that drown every single year at the reservoir 10 min from my house and those deaths are preventable. I swim just fine but the pfd goes on me before my feet touch the launch.

Your video prompted me to go look at PFDs and I found the Astral Sturgeon, which looks really good to me. I think I would prefer the thin back. I also like the single pocket and dedicated place for pliers.

I have the OT one and love it (I would even wear it bank fishing cause it holds all my tools) but wish it had a lash tab. I have my knive on a ring, tab would be much better. The other plus is if you have an AutoPilot, the remote fits in the pocket and the leash can go up all those keepers to the top ring making it very accessable, tethered, but out of the way when not needed. Good stuff guys.

I used to use the standard puffy like jacket and it was dorky and miserable. I did not become an alpha bass pro until I realized the PFD is the most important piece of gear you have. It’s like a good pair of underwear or boots.

Totally agree. I have the Chinook. 2, actually. I had the one like yours, but then got the next version -- just because I liked the new pockets more! They are both great, and I keep the old one as a spare. Mine are bright orange to help locate me in case rescue is necessary.
One note: while it may be true that the "neck pillow" could keep your head above water if unconscious and on your back, but what if you were face down? The Chinook is a Type III but I believe it's a Type V that is designed to keep your head above water? Not to question your terrific expertise!
    Great video!

I also have the Chinook. I love it so much and it is so comfortable that I sometimes wear it when I'm just going to do some quick bank fishing. With all those pockets and attachment points I can still carry lip grippers, scissors, pliers, hooks, tackle, leader line, etc... That little strap on the chest of the Old Town PFD, wouldn't that be for "hands-free" when you are standing and doing a re-tie or changing gear the rod could be secured to the vest so it doesn't fall to the ground or into the water?

Great educational video boys. I did the $50 Bass Pro Shop version in year one and it helped me figure out what I was missing. Then upgraded to the Chinook and never looked back. Toss your phone in a zip lock and it fits nicely in the front pocket of the NRS. Did anyone catch the "shirtless with a pfd" comment? Sounds like a live topic! Cheers, JJ

when i got my kayak the dealer threw in a stohlquist fit that i used for years. no technical features, minimal adjustment, full back. it kept me safe and nothing else.
i recently upgraded to an nrs chinook and it's the biggest quality of life improvement i've made on the kayak. the fit and mesh back make it way more comfortable and all the pockets make keeping tools, whistles, fishing license, etc much easier. in the event you haven't already you should absolutely spring for one.

Last year I flipped my kayak in freezing water and no one could get out there and get me. Hypothermia set in, I couldn't feel my limbs, my skin was numb and I could barely breath because of my pulmonary issues. I had my PFD on and after forty minutes I was fished out of the lake minutes from death. My PFD is worth every penny and more. How much is our lives worth? A heck of a lot more than the cost of the PFD. I lost all my equipment and my viewers watched me live when I flipped. WEAR A PFD!
