I was waiting for you to mention why Singapore fared so well. In my view it has more to do with leaders like Lee Kwan Yew than anything else. His reforms are directly resposible for what Singapore is today. Yes it's a tiny country, but it was in the hands of a great leader. How many great countries have been brought to their knees because of incopentent, stupid leaders? Singapore never had that, they always had at the top somebody that was dedicated to advance the citizens cause over anything else...and of course, that has paid off hansomely.

This is what I don’t understand, why is the cost of a car important when it’s easy to live without. They are trying to look after their environment. That’s a good thing. There are theories that coronavirus is spread more easily in polluted air so this is yet another reason to reduce car ownership.
The main reason why Singapore is rich is that it is blessed with strong leaders, eg Lee Kuan Yew. LKY has undeniable foresight in the transformation of Singapore into what it is today. The subsequent generations of leaders are able to build on his legacy. High calibre leaders that looks at least 10 to 20 years ahead, low corruption, highly educated workforce, business friendly environment and fantastic infrastructure are the pillars of Singapore's success.
Watch the video again if you still can't get your head around the disparity that exists. Even though you have the average per capita income about 3200k, 20% is accumulated which leaves you with 2560$ to spend, in a place which tops the list of most expensive cities.
What do you define rich as? Being able to go to school? Afford a meal? Having a roof over your head? I'd like to remind you that there are people who have never gone to school before, had to sleep in the cold before and not everyone has the luxury to be able to feed themselves.

And it's really objective when you say an "American lifestyle" and a "Singaporean lifestyle". @@biri2biri - I'm not really interested in a back & forth. But the video did state, Signapore has a high rate of "government housing". So I'm not too sure what exactly do you mean. Gov housing is not 'homeownership' here in the USA.
Not many people use cars in Singapore. My family didn’t because the train system is really good. It’s not a big place and you can get places easily with taxis and public transportation. It’s also really safe so even though I was young I was allowed out alone :)
Singapore is undeniably rich. Mainly because of disciplined Singaporeans and because of how it is run--strictly and unbending. Laws are imposed and felt by everyone, no one is special unlike in so many countries. A world model. More than 30 years ago, an American lad was lashed simply for vandalism. A tiny violation in other countries is equal to a big crime in Singapore. A Filipina ( it was controversial ) was hanged about the same period. The Middle East besides Singapore are easily THE SAFEST COUNTRIES of the world because of strict governance and imposition of laws. There are so many countries with economies as tiny as Singapore that have been poor for decades. We can say their culture played big as to how their status has been to this day, yet we've seen big improvements in a few of those same countries which defy reasons for not developing, if not for becoming rich. It is all up to how a government handles an independent nation. However, there is the factor of population size, that also made Singapore. It couldn't have progressed fast had it been as huge as India's or China's. This is interestingly debatable. Ultimately, the form of government is always manifested in the living conditions and the orderliness or otherwise, of a nation's society. Complete freedom or lack thereof, the punishment for every law violation and again, lack thereof, results in how we see societies. It is noteworthy to mention that Laws are made to be imposed.

Honestly as a Singaporean in this covid-19 Im thankful for being a singaporean. The government has many layers of strategy and subsidies for any situation. Many people complained for years about the high tax and CPF. Now the citizens are thankful because there are just so many types of grant available for people who lost their jobs or had a pay cut. NO MENTION OF THIS ONE CRUCIAL FACT MAKES THIS CLIP WORTHLESS. Why is it a tax haven? Because it was a British colony and the very wealthy "park" their trust money there. Explains the outward glitter and inward inequality.
Hexroad Ammo as a singaporean yes our houses are affordable. Not cheap that I agree. If your a singaporean please educate yourself on economics and valuation of land. Our country is small and demand is high with little supplies of course houses would be expensive but the government pushed the cost down and also provided multiple packages for singaporean families to apply for grants in which effectively shave off a few grand. And also if you worked the CPF is more than sufficient to buy a house meaning to say by right if your not a free loader you would be able to afford a house without using cash. Please just get out of Singapore and also open your eyes for example the most similar city also a financial hub Hong Kong’s property prices is only affordable to the rich. In Singapore 95% and above of Singaporean’s fully own our own house. You have no idea how blessed you are to be a singaporean and to be here. Open your eyes travel out of your comfort zone and I am sure your views would have changed. If not then I suggest you either leave and look for your wonderland or go look for counselling because you are either not bothered to educate yourself on macroeconomics and the reason why property prices in Singapore cannot be lower than current valuation due to demand and supply (little land). It is people like you that complain for the sake of complaining and not realising that you are blessed that annoys me. Sure go ahead and migrate to get a house for thousands of dollars or few grands for a large house but at the cost of security, safety, job opportunities, family enrichment, family safety, child education etc. You should be ashamed of yourself for not understanding that our houses is affordable and cheap in this regard to all Singaporean’s but not so for foreigners.

When looking at the country's high average income and inequality, the video seems to have missed that Singapore is a city state. In most countries that have a mixture of rural areas and cities of various sizes, the largest cities tend to have the highest inequalities. But the average inequality of the whole country is evened out by the relatively lower levels of inequality of rural areas. Singapore has no rural areas.

Singapore has excellent public transport. You don’t need a car. Take out cars and Singapore is Not the most expensive city.
This is what I don’t understand, why is the cost of a car important when it’s easy to live without. They are trying to look after their environment. That’s a good thing. There are theories that coronavirus is spread more easily in polluted air so this is yet another reason to reduce car ownership.
@Srinaath AnbuduraiHDB pretty cheap
Singapore is so small you actually don't need a car.
@Srinaath Anbudurai actually usa health care is much more expensive and they don't even take priority in those who are really in need of medical care

The key is self discipline in order to succeed like singapore.
Ragnar Naharab - No such discipline when they go out from Spore. Spore is a police state so every citizen behaves when they are inside.
Yeah
I dont think singapore is successful
Absolutely love Singapore… Visited the country 3 times and hoping to go back when COVID is under control.. Singapore has been very good to my sister and her family, much safer than the UK.
Hello Jennifer how are you doing today
A very organized country! Strong leadership, good governance and discipline, these are the reasons why Singapore became succesful!
Singapore is super rich because a lot of investments by foreign countries.
Singapore Government is the smartest Government in the world, they know how to overcome economic problem, social problem, and politic problem.
People love to come Singapore because very low crime rate and peaceful.
Because Of this Government build more HDB thats is eco-friendly but heavy which makes Singapore really close to sinking.
And its bcus LEE KUAN YEW WANTED GREAT MINDS. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT WE NEED RESOURCES BUT THEY ARE MAKING TOO MANY BUILDINGS ONE DAY SINGAPORE WILL SINK THAT IS WHY 2017'S National Day told us Singapore would be in the sky..

i'm a Malaysian, personally i think Spore generally is a stable Country, economy and politically....for now...of course it has problems like many other countries but it will not destroy the country ... in order for it to be sustainable for the nex 100 years, it has to reduce the influx of foreign expat and labour migration, and outflow of local talent.... it's that simple..

Limited freedom and limited democracy bring the high efficiency to singapore
In a way , yes. Total democracy may not be the best model for every country.

Sajeel Hussain asian communism isn’t a thing lmao. Communism didn’t start in asia.
If you give your citizens too much freedom, shit happens and the country slows down. Democracy is there, just that PAP (people's action party) always won with supermajority. They are running the country quite well, no point limiting their power, it will only slow Singapore down.
Really an incredible growth by any country after the end of the colonial rule. We are proud--- Singapore is one of the asian countries.
No corruption : this a major reason of Singapore prosperity.. No corruption : this a major reason of Singapore prosperity..
Well if you build an autonomous city it will be great if the people in the city care for it, if all the big cities in the world separated themselves from their respective nation it would perform well, something very well documented in Renaissance, look at Hong Kong
@Ankit Banerjee Sometimes i really get angry. Why are people like that? Most of cities are not properly planned as well. Poor city planning must be blamed and ofcourse people.
Run government like a company lol
I’ve been working in Singapore for almost a year, but I don’t think Singaporean are rich. The government probably rich as fk, but the ppl here work so hard for life. 12 to 14 working hours is normal in Singapore, so only if you live in the country you know the truth.

Singapore is rich because the leaders are professional high in moral god fearing no corruption no stealing. Honourable government will be blessed by almighty lord
Errr... you want to get new citizen is it??
Thank you.☺
As Singaporeans say - Singapore is rich however Singaporeans are POOR. Taxes are high, fines are super high and for those who can't afford are just sent to prison along with instalment plans to pay fines after serving the prison. Medisave doesn't cover all medical conditions - Imagine a person paying for medisave every month their entire life and after retirement is diagnosed with a medical condition which leads to his recurring monthly medicine bill of 3000 dollars for the rest of his life and medisave doesn't cover it cos the patient does not need to be admitted in the hospital, it just sucks doesn't it? That's the reason why lot of Singaporeans move to other countries. Anyways yes Singapore is a RICH country...

In the description: "Singapore is a tiny country, but it's managed to become an Asian economic hub." Ahhh I love that you know Singapore is a country.
The Central Provident Fund(the mandatory savings accounts!) has kept Singapore from going into a couple other recessions since independence!
Stamford Raffles was tasked to find a place for the British to set up a port to beat the Dutch, Spain and French. Back then, the Penang and Malacca Port had lost their touch.
So Stamford Raffles 'found' Singapore located in the south of the Golden Khersonese. Stamford Raffles said
"We found a piece of land, an island that is so strategic, it is more precious than a continent."

Overall, if you look at any angle Singapore is really a model country despite its size and lack of natural resources. I think is mainly because of their tradition even after their independence that is : discipline. Foremost is there is no corruption , there is political stabitlity, and selective tolerance to immigrants like Japan. Although there are more poor than rich people all public services and utilities are available to every resident. What more can any Singaporean ask for?
