I personally use the venum kontact evo shinguards, so i can gradually condition my shins, for combination-based training with partners and the venum elite for sparring.
Definitely a way of doing it - especially for controlled drills to make sure you're hitting correctly (not hitting elbows/knees/etc) by using the cloth ones.

Any thoughts on the cheaper RDX non-sock type shinguards on Amazon? I'm an middle aged bjj guy just wanting to dip my toes into MMA and striking. I have no illusions of super hard sparring and am trying to find a super cheap starter set. I figure if I really like it I can invest later. Back in my younger days I did a good amount of hard Karate and MMA sparring with sock type guards and definitely agree with what you say about them.
It sounds like you've got a good expectation of what to get from them, they can be a good way to just get started and invest later. I'll say this, you probably won't use them a whole lot unless the program you're starting in has beginners drilling. I can tell you did your research! Those sock shin guards hit different eh? haha
i really like the sock style shin guards. but i hear you because i did catch a elbow today in training and it wasnt my favorite. They are actually a cheap pair i bought from a traditional martial arts store, which has since closed. The reason i use them is because in my mind, they force me to be honest with my training and i can get some kind of feedback from the kick.. i dont spar really, not anymore, im too old for that shit, so i dont think i need the leather style guards. i also dont go ham with my kicks so its not like im being a douche with my partner lol. i have used the leather style but they all seem to dig into the back of my legs or spin out of position. I have sports taped them to keep them from spinning , but i havent found a way for them to be comfortable.
I’d say it sounds like you could benefit from play sparring without shinguards have you done that? Also what kind of leather shinguards have you tried? I can make some recommendations via our Amazon page
@@Muaythaiventura I used windy pro style and tried a Fairtex. The windy really fog into my leg, and the Fairtex were ok, but a little chunky on me. My legs are thin but long. I'm looking at the windy pro competition because they seem long enough and they are padded, but not a lot.

I like that the padding is a little thinner, I like to feel the kicks a little, and it keeps me honest with my technique, the reason I gravitated towards sick style in the first place. I don't spar anymore, so the thinnest isn't an issue.
Can confirm, busted my foot a good while ago and only just now getting my confidence back in kicking with the right leg. Definitely will not go back to my old shinguards.
@@Muaythaiventura Standard Rumble shinguards, barely covers the foot and it's really soft compared to the Venum ones I use now. Much prefer the foot covered during sparring, as it's easy to hit a knee here and there, especially against beginners.

Yokkao makes decent stuff now - wasn't always the case - but I'll tell you, the stuff being made by big brands in Thailand isn't made to last like it used to be. They realized if shinguards last too long, then you don't buy again. So choose wisely.
They make great gear - I don't have personal experience with the shinguards but their gloves & focus mitts are some of my favorite. I'd give it a try as it's a durable brand!
Hi Jonathan & fellow MT practitioners, Jonathan, you’ve got me WORRIED, man! I’ve been using Hayabusa’s T3 full back shin guards ($170 Canadian) for 1 year (drills 2x/week). I haven’t used any other shin guards, so I have no basis of comparison. I’ve hit shin-on-shin Hard a few times, & it’s a dull pain, which dissipates (normal?). Moderate impacts I don’t feel. Construction on these Hayabusa T3s seem good. Materials are decent. Padding is thick & adequate (Maybe?). Tops of feet are well covered, even toes. Fit is slightly clunky, but tolerable (I Wish companies made Custom-measured shin pads!!) Even With a full back stretch sleeve, and a Velcro strap under the knee, I STILL have to push the Foot pads back into place at times. (I chose the Hyb T3 specifically BECAUSE on the back sleeve …. I figured they wouldn’t move at all …. Nope….the feet still move a bit.... the shins stay in place, though)….I seem to have good mobility in them, & can get kicks off relatively quickly. *** JONATHAN, Will I need new shinguards for Intense Sparring (fight camp) ?? The T3 is advertised for Muay Thai and MMA ….. MMA fighters deliver muay Thai-style kicks, so wouldn’t the Hyb T3 perform OK ?? (…. I guess I’ll find out soon enough ?? !!! ) IF I need to buy another pair, at least they’ll all be Cheaper than Hayabusa…. (Rival $150, Fairtex $100-120, Venum $100, etc., all in Canadian $$). Hey these are all great points! So for shin to shin it should t be too bad with good quality shin guards. But shin to knee? It will feel how you described no matter what 🤣👍 As you described “clunky” is awkward to move around in. I’d highly suggest looking at other shin guards, particularly a thai brand. Combat corner makes some great equipment as well and they ship out of Milwaukee I believe. I make these videos in hopes people see it before they dish out their hard earned cash for equipment that is heavily marketing (like Hayabusa) but isn’t necessarily the best bang for your Buck…. Or just not even the best quality. I wouldn’t stress too much about the protective properties in particular but the comfort, ease of movement (I could argued that’s a safety thing to prevent injuries), and overall durability are what you want. Fairtex, Topking Twins (they have new logo/branding due to IP issue here in USA now), Combat Corner & InFightStyle are the brands I’d look at and recommend to anyone.
Venom elites over everything. I have thick boy calves so i appreciate the really thick overlay straps rather than hook and loop that don't always fit and no metal rings to catch you on calf kicks.
Combat Corner HMIT Shin Guards are my current go to shin pads for MT. I'm on my second pair and ready to replace them... I've used Top King Gloves for over a decade and couldn't recommend their gloves any more highly. What is something new to try in a shin pad aside from Combat Corner and Top King?
TWINS Special - but there is nowhere to get them in USA currently due to some legal action based on alleged fraud from a distributor from what I'm hearing. Please do not order from an american website that says they will ship it, it won't come.
Yokkao shins are great or sp1 fairtex. The fairtex shins don't have the knee protection thing, their sp5 does have it I think, but I have not tried those. Twins are too soft for me personally and absorb a lot, their gloves do the same but are a blessing in that regard. I also like the brand Super Pro, but I don't know if you can get them in the US.
@@Cobra_T_motervation perhaps at a certain point to get used to them, but let's be honest, less than 5% of people setting foot into a gym in a western country are competing. Competitors should also be doing play sparring without shinguards on as well - I've made videos on it. An every day use should be a durable, safe, shinguard.

Hmmm when you say high density, what brand? They could possibly work honestly. Most of the people in MMA I have trained either use shinguards or just don’t when doing MMA specific sparring.
Terrible product and shinguard - especially for the price point! That's literelly the same style shinguard in the thumbnail that has "X" over it. Do not buy.

I lost my Fairtext SP7s last week and had them for at least 7 years. Did not really spar much till like 2 years ago. They were amazing. Decided to say fuck it try out Hayabusa after reading and checking out aging guards. First impression of the T3 LX in crimson was VERY disappointing. They were fucking flat dawg. When I put them one they are so wide it’s ridiculous. They need breaking in. They have NO sense of solidity. Wish I had gotten the Top Kings instead or another Fairtext. But I did spar with them, and dam they were every thing they were advertised as. I never had to adjust them at all which is one of main reasons I bought them. I guess I’ll give ‘em a chance
@@Muaythaiventura the hook and loop design. Most shin guards have a buckle and hole where you put the Velcro strap through. Yokkao shin guards don't have that hole. It's just two Velcro straps that stick together on the back
I can see that for sure - but for striking at high intensity, you need striking specific shinguards. MMA people do stand up only rounds, use them then.
This video probably could've been a couple minutes long. No offense, but there's just too much filler. Listen to it at 175% speed if you want to watch any sizable portion of the video. That said, these are fine for sparring. It's all about context. It depends how hard you are going. If you are going full contact, and trying to brutalize your training partner, I agree these aren't the best. But if you're not going fight intensity, they are fine.

We gave a ton of context on this and this is coming from being in this industry for 17+ years now and working as an instructor for 12+ years full-time. I agree, context matters, but the number of people showing up with these and injuring themselves/training partners with cloth shinguards has been too high throughout the years. A lot of younger folks 15-21 year olds who don't have the type of funds we do. Many of them have zero guidance from family and actually have deadbeat parents. Many of them come from poor families with horrible financial habits. 180.00 bucks is a lot for people in those situations. One gym i go to my coach just takes in troubled teens and trains them for free. I buy them all hand wraps and mouth pieces. Don't judge so quick.
i use these types of shin guards every day.. not a problem bros yappin for no reason yeah they don’t have the best padding but they don’t move an inch during sparring.

I’ve used my top king shin guards for a few months and they are amazing they feel brand new and I wear them for hours against top fighters

Yh I injured my foot, caught someone’s elbow, I wear hayabusa shin guards and the elbow slipped between the padding on my foot then crack.

I agree, context matters, but the number of people showing up with these and injuring themselves/training partners with cloth shinguards has been too high throughout the years. I agree, these can be used for light contact, but let's be honest: beginners have a hard time controlling themselves. ; )

You're paying more for branding than quality with Hayabusa, in my personal opinion. You can get better quality for your $$$ is all I'm saying. No need to comment on people working at McDonalds 🤣

A lot of younger folks 15-21 year olds who don't have the type of funds we do.
Many of them have zero guidance from family and actually have deadbeat parents.
Many of them come from poor families with horrible financial habits. 180.00 bucks is a lot for people in those situations.
One gym i go to my coach just takes in troubled teens and trains them for free. I buy them all hand wraps and mouth pieces. Don't judge so quick.

i use these types of shin guards every day.. not a problem bros yappin for no reason yeah they don’t have the best padding but they don’t move an inch during sparring.
also gloves from hayabusa is top notch

Fairtex thai pads, twins shin guards, sandee gloves. That’s my kit 🤜🤛
