The “ professor “ Roy Bittan does not get the acclaim he truly deserves. He is by far and away among the best rock piano players to ever live. Love everything he does on the piano. He’s a master at improv.
i was at that concert. it was absoloutly amazing, i knew that nils had a history of doing amazing solos during this song, nobody expected the flip. the crowd was going insane
AWESOME! Though the sound quality is not perfect on the video, this performance is just awesome: Nils, Max, Roy, Patti, Bruce and...Do I have to say his name?... What a song & what a band!!! Thanks for sharing this.
Many thanks for your answer, and yes i find that Patti Smith made a good version. She came to my tiny town for Arthur Rimbaud was born and grew up here. Just to mention that Patti just like Jim Morisson Loved this poet, except that Jim stayed in Paris.
Nils could do a flip back in the day, but that wasn't a flip . That was just a little dive roll. Not bad, but when I saw Nils in the early 80s, before the E Street Band, he'd take a run at a mini-trampolin at the end of a shoe and do an ACTUAL back flip
Nils Lofgren, amazing performer. 3 months after this concert, after years of doing these types of on-stage theatrics, Nils had hip replacement surgery for both hips.
Nils says it was a culmination of high school (almost Olympics team) gymnastics, hard driving basketball on concrete and these feats. He has taken up tan dancing as a hobby and is learning the harp and trying to combine the two. If anyone can do it, he can.
@mwvdzee bruce didn't co-wrote the song.. Bruce WROTE the song, but he didn't publish it so he gave the song to Patti Smith (adapting the text for a woman, in fact the 2 lyrics are different), that was recordindg her album in the studio near Bruce ("in the edge of dark" session)

It was on her third album. 'Easter' and Bruce wrote and recorded the song in 1977 before giving it to her (she was working in the next studio)- she partially re-wrote it. Both of them are credited as co-writers.
Basically Springsteen wrote it, but he didn't release his original version until decades later. He instead gave it to Patti Smith who partially changed the lyrics and released a great version (probably the best)
Bruce says he plays 1,000 times better than he does but "Still wanders over when I have a solo, maybe to see if I've gotten better". Some believe Bruce can't play well, but Stevie and Nils free him up to do what he does all over te stage, in the audience and such.
"just for reference...it's the "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and while this song was one of the 90 he wrote for that album, it didn't make it. However, it is on "The Promise" album which contains a number of songs they didn't include...came out in 2009 or 2010.

When I listen to Nils play, it's like he wants us to know and understand how much joy he gets playing for us
No other living person can do what Nils does with a guitar.
The guvnor
I love Bruce...but nils rocks the bollox off him. both great👍
Not only is Nils' solo amazing but roy's intro is too. I wish he'd done it at one of the 8 shows I saw on the last tour. the guy's a legend!!

I tried this once on stage, it didn't turn out so well....
From the way Bruce and Patti sing the bridge together, I think this song might be about having sticky cuddles.

Nils rocked...and rolled!!!
My tears run down every time when Nils plays those noctes.

The most epic is when de solo begins and Nils' flip

Patti ruins it. Nils' flip! Excellent!!
So true
She ruins every song.. She's a brutal singer!! 😂
Saw him with Bonnie raitt at music in jumping on the trampoline is when I fell in love with him 💚💚😳
Thanks for the upload. but, maybe you could change the tag "Becuase" into "because"
