  • Join us on Expedition Epcot as we look at the hidden gem that was Cranium Command in the Wonders of Life pavilion. A show featuring Buzzy the animatronic who was reported stolen in 2018 yet remains unconfirmed.
This show was a light hearted fun show about the stresses of controlling your life and existed for 17 years before being abandoned at the Walt Disney World Resort in Epcot.
Make sure to check out our first part on the overall history of the Wonders of Life.
I do not support trespassing at Disney in anyway to look at closed and old history of the parks so please so not do so but in this case it is vital to the overall story of this show.

There was a good little joke if you held around a bit longer in the first row as everyone was exiting. The eye robot would pop back up look at you and tell you to collect your son, before then going “oh he’s your husband?”.

I animated on CC and that recruiting poster was from one of my scenes. I think some of us animated on CC after Mermaid and before Rescuers DU. Unfortunately I never got to visit the attraction. I learned more about CC from this vid than I did working on it.

It sounds like it would be perfect for Inside Out. I'm not sure if Disney is going in that direction though. It feels like they are building more thrill rides based on their recent acquisitions, and phasing out the educational and cultural content.

For sure! I definitely think an Inside Out overlay which includes Buzzy & the emotions would be great. However, in regards to the Imagination pavilion... I really feel they should go back to it’s original concept of creativity, revamped with new technology and effects with Dreamfinder & Figment. Especially after the wild success in festival appearances, new merchandise and the comic series.

People: **crowd shouting and screaming at a single lower key thrill ride**

    • @danopticon
      @danopticon 3 роки тому

People do respond to more than thrill rides, though. You’ve got things backwards: we have thrill rides forced on us because they’re all Disney wants to provide. The trend towards creating only thrill-rides is more a case of Wall Street’s tail wagging the audience’s dog:
Dumb “good vs. evil” superhero movies are easy to crank out seasonally, are unlikely to cause controversy, and are easy to create new disposable merchandise for yearly. Disney only wants rides in its parks that tie directly to selling a movie and its merchandise i.e. that provide “synergy and vertical integration” opportunities. Thrill rides tie into superhero movies and can be re-themed every few years with little effort.
Disney only creates mindless thrill-rides now because it’s what they’re grooming their audience to want. It’s difficult at this point to escape the ubiquity of the Disney/Buena Vista/ABC/ESPN/etc., etc., etc. ecosystem, so they’ll keep pummeling you with what they want you to accept, until you believe it’s what you wanted all along because you’ve never experienced other options.
They can create superhero movies via assembly line, endlessly recycling one same script, without having to deal with temperamental artists or with relevance or with timely social issues or controversy. Every gift-buying season, using largely the same molds, they can crank out the “must-have” toys du jour associated with the latest film’s costuming. The toys and films alike promote the mindless rides and vice-versa, and the rides never need to be unique or creative - in fact, it’s rather helpful if they’re simplistic instead, based on quickly jolting a few short-lasting adrenaline spikes. The rides, toys, and movies should all be as generic as possible, so they can all be re-themed and presented as “new” seasonally with as little as a few coats of paint.
As long as each synergistic object in the vertical integration model provides a brief raw jolt of arousal pointing to the next object, nothing distracts from the goal of leading the consumer through seasonal cycles of instant short-lasting gratifications, leaving them always wanting the next one.
It’s not that thrill rides are the product audiences demand. It’s that you’re the product, being groomed by Disney to fit the needs of Disney’s many corporate partners. You’re being reduced to a mental slumber, hungering only for the quick jolts of arousal you purchase, yet never truly feeling anything beyond a nagging sensation of not being fully satisfied yet, thinking maybe the next purchase will give you that long-lasting jolt you really want…
People yearn for meaning. But as long as Disney can keep you in a loop of instant gratifications instead, actively denied meaning, they can keep you running in that loop for life.

However not making such a statement has made continuous talks about Buzzy and the Pavillion. Could have been Disney's plan of Marketing Research.

I feel like you're on to something, but keep in mind that Buzzy was ripped from his perch, damaging the hydraulics and wires. I think that it would be a lot safer and easier to remove the animatronic the proper way, especially considering that Disney could always recycle the perch or other parts for later attractions. But I could be easily proved wrong, and the only way we'll ever know what really happened is if Disney confirmed it themselves.

It's funny that this attraction mostly was a footnote at Wonders of Life when it was in operation and became more well-known and admired after the pavilion closed. It almost took on a Streisand Effect, from what I noticed, having been as you said overshadowed by Body Wars and being listed as a hidden gem. Now with the Buzzy stuff theft, people are actually seriously into it.

SO much star power in this and the humor was unbelievably funny! From both Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon as Hans and Franz from SNL for the heart, Jon Lovitz as the creative imaginative Right brain, George Wendt (Cheers) as the Stomach, Bobcat Goldthwait as the hilarious Over-reacting Adrenal Gland, and even Kenneth Kimmins (Arrested Development) as the principal at school. This is how shows are supposed to be directed, written and can to also be as educational as they are funny.
_Small dog on sidewalk barking at us_ Adrenal Gland: "KICK IT! STEP ON IT!"
_After Science class explosion_ Adrenal Gland: "I've never had to work this hard in my life!" L/R Ventricle: "Ya what ah Loosah Captain we have!" "Yah you're pathetic girly man!" "You ah girly man loosah and pathetic!"
_After getting thrown in trash can_ Right Brain in Army crawling in smoke: "Captain! You HAVE to give me a chance for REVENGE!!!"

Right Brain: "We're headin to the SALT MINES I TELL YA! The BIG HOUSE! Maybe even PRISON!"
Left Brain: "We can kiss Harvard goodbye! No job! No awkwardly normal lifestyle! I hope you're proud of yourself young man..."

Inside out 👀 yesss. In the center of the dome should be the brain tower (mini version but giving an illusion that it’s big with the Disney castle effect) from inside out. And the cranium command theater should become the inside of Riley’s head control center where all the emotions are, with a new show of course.👌

I'm also certain Miss Emotion from "Reason and Emotion" was the inspiration for Disgust with her attitude and "I can't even" eyes.
I also spot three Disney things poured into the boy's brain: Ariel, R2-D2 and an X-Wing. :)

The prototype Buzzy, Captain Cortex is what you see in the ads for Cranium Command such as the park pamphlets and wasn't used in the show as the change from the "old" Buzzy and the one used on the show, was a last minute thing so Buzzy wasn't changed at all from the opening to Wonders of Life's closening.

By the way, anytime when objects or animatronics in theme parks are closed off and left abandoned, and I actually see videos of it, it scares me. I watched it and . It gets more scarier as when the cameraman came up to the animatronics and the actual stage. It reminds me of my nightmares of how every character sits motionless, eyes never blinking, even robots still as a statue, staring back at you when you look in front of them.
This is the one attraction I remember going to back in the year 2000 (when Disney was doing their millennial celebration through December) and Cranium Command was one of those rides I love as a child. I remember seeing it and thought, "Is it a dream I'm watching? Am I seeing an alternative to the attraction that wasn't there before?" It was an alternative I wish I recorded, but never thought of it. Surprisingly six years later after I rode it, I ended up having a dream about myself (at age 10) being at the attraction alone. Seeing it again as if it was a childhood memory. And talking with Buzzy after the show (what backstage people usually do in their film productions).

If they were being taken to the archives, Disney would have never just sawed off the hypothalamus's head, straight through cables and hydraulic lines, they would have removed the whole AA, including his base.

I am noticing now I grew up with educational TV shows and that's what the ride was, educational, I grew up with Big Comfy Couch, Arthur, Zaboomafoo, so once educational kids programs were not mainstream anymore the ride had its downfall, I am not sure if that's why the sponsorship pulled out because educational wasn't popular anymore, but I think this ride would still be around if that were the case.

Funny thing was it was reported stolen first and now his clothes were stolen. Now it told he is being refurbished now but thats why/how he is Missing.
Disney seems to not keep their stories right.

I think that considering Disney’s current strategy in the parks, it should be an inside out pavilion with the cranium command repurposed as rileys mind with new animatronics for the characters. As for what would go in the other areas, I don’t know. (This is assuming that the imagination pavilion will not be changed, and if so, changed back to the first sort of journey into imagination

Pretty much the evidence supports that Buzzy was removed after his clothing was stolen but his clothing has been recovered and would now be with Buzzy in Disney’s archives. Pretty much the Do Not Destroy tag on Buzzy meant that he was listed for archival upon demolition or renovation if the ride space but they removed him early in response to the theft. They also did a rough job with his removal as his original hydraulics will never be used again and will be replaced if he ever gets reused in another attraction.

Pretty cool. It's something of a badge of honor. I started looking at Cranium Command videos after I read about the disappearance of Buzzy earlier this morning. I've been looking now for the past forty minutes and just this single subject, the shuttering of Cranium Command, is fascinating.
My late-fiancée and I were developing a plan to take all of her adult children and her grandchildren to visit Disney World back in 2014. We were so close to committing to the trip when my sweetheart had a reoccurrence of some side-effects of cancer surgery in late-2011. I was thinking, while watching this video and having read your comment, of what might have been.

So I think no matter which way you sit on Buzzy's theft, this is still on Disney for it happening in the first place.
The Disney company were already aware of urban adventures breaching walled up areas of the closed attractions. They had already banned Adam The Woo years before the theft. They had also tagged Buzzy for the archives and, to borrow Indiana Jones, the animatronic belongs in a museum. Yet, Disney did nothing about it in spite of trespassors.
I also wonder how you can cut Buzzy out of there without anybody noticing or hearing the theft considering the Wine stage in front of the closed exhibit. You would still make some kind of noise trying to cut him out durring park operating hours. It would be easier just to steal the clothes off Buzzy's back instead of taking him.
Which raises the troubling idea that, while somebody did steal Buzzy's clothes, there's a possibility that Disney may have falsified a police report.

I only saw this all the way through once and couldn't stand it. The horror of seeing the disembodied heads in the preshow has never left me since I had to be dragged out of the preshow at five years old crying I was so scared. No doubt it would be great for Inside Out, but TBH I don't see Disney caring that much to even try to bring the pavilion back past using it for events and I'd rather they just demolish it and put a new attraction there (something original and not relating to an existing IP would be nice)

Jerry Rees didn't voice for animatronic Buzzy as he (the animated Buzzy in the preshow who sounds like a meek young man, he was voiced by Jared Rushton) sounds just like the boy Bobby whose brain Buzzy takes control of, Rees must have programmed the animationrics movements. Because of the voices of both Buzzy and Bobby are alike, it is Scott Curtis who played Bobby in the main show, who voices Buzzy.

I wouldn't put it past someone to actually steal Buzzy.
But I'm curious how they would remove it, and get out without anyone noticing it.
I think it's probably the later and Disney just removed it themselves like you noted.
