    I rarely post replies on reviews however, a post is definitely warranted here. Regarding frame rates. Before doing a camera bashing session, please do some homework.
    The EVA1's user switch is programmable. When that switch is programmed to control Frame Rate, the camera enters high speed modes with the press of a button on the side of the camera, just like the FS7 does. It cannot get much easier than that. You can also dial the frame rate to any of the available frame rates on the fly. Saying that a person MUST go into the menu and go through a bunch of steps to change the frame rate is literally false information.
    Regarding autofocus. This is a cine camera designed to compete with professional cameras. Autofocus is a function for amateurs. Amateurs purchase cameras such as the GH5, not a camera in the $10,000 range, hence why you see so many people purchasing low end cameras. If autofocus is what you seek, by all means, go find a consumer camera and purchase that because the EVA1 was NOT designed to be a consumer camera. If the EVA1 was a consumer camera it would not be one of very few cameras which are Netflix approved for use on professional productions.
    Regarding ergonomics, we spoke with the engineers at Panasonic in Japan, in person, in regard. The handle is removable for a reason. The EVA1 was designed to allow the user to custom rig the camera OR to be able to be used directly out of the box. Slap the EVA1 on a nice shoulder plate, add a Zacuto trigger arm, a few other accessories and you will see what this camera was designed to really do. Using a cinema camera "out of the box" is literally absurd to me. It's like purchasing a new Mustang and thinking you have a high performance vehicle. Not a single cinema camera is "comfortable" out of the box. They're cine cameras, they were designed to be customized based upon a users desires, to their specific needs.
    That said, this camera is a perfect accompanyment to a Varicam LT. It's dual native ISO's, internal smoothing, format options, and other features make it a hell of an option for the money, not to mention, its 6K capabilities and 10 bit internal recording.This camera may not record RAW in camera however it does allow for external 6K RAW external recording, at a VERY reasonable cost. This camera has PROFESSIONAL features at the cost of a prosumer camera. It can fill virtually any need. A well rigged EVA1 with an Atamos RAW recorder would come in at less than $10,000, and would give a camera which cost over $50,000 a run for its money. THAT is what this camera was designed to do, compete directly with high end cinema cameras, something a C200 fails miserably at.
    This is the point where I say, this review is pretty much useless to anyone who desires a camera with real versatility. Maybe if you spent as much time LEARNING a camera as you did bashing it, you could muster up a camera review which could actually assist people, rather than scare them away. The C200 cannot touch the capabilities of the EVA1, other than the fact it may be able to "autofocus" faster and better... a feature I personally have NEVER once used in my entire career.
    Signed, an EVA1 owner who didn't just rent one for a day and spread a bunch of false and misleading info.... As a pro in the business, I no longer have any value at all for your opinions, not to mention any respect at all for a person who makes such poor evaluations without even doing their homework...

      The only beef I have with this camera is that I can't mount the fujinon mk cine lens line up. Beast of a zoom lens at this price. What a bummer.

      Mad Over Music, agreed. I installed a Wooden Nickel PL mount on my EVA1 and a Fujinon 20-120 lens. It’s spectacular however that’s a heavier lens. I changed the mount back to the EF lens and have elected to purchase the Canon 18-80 cine lens for my EVA1. This is a great combo for this camera. The Fuji 20-120 is mounted up to my Varicam LT. Since My cameras are rented by the productions i shoot on all the time, I wanted a less expensive rental option I could offer. The EVA1 paired with the Canon 18-80 is a great option.

      As I said, the image quality is great on this camera. BUT to me part of what makes a good camera is answering yes to "am I excited to shoot with this?". To me ergonomics matter and if I had the EVA1 and the C200 lying next to each other, I'd grab the C200. While I feel this way I understand that personal preference plays a large role in what camera we each choose to shoot on and that my preference may not be yours.

    This is a great review. I'll just add that I wish people would stop using other cameras so much as benchmarks. I understand how helpful that can be in some sense, but you immediately have to start making caveats about the feature comparison due to design. Like 'it's great the c200 does raw internal, and YES, the EVA will output RAW, but it's a real bummer you can't get raw internal with the EVA'. What's NOT said is 'how many people with the c200 just wish they could have a solid internal recording codec OTHER than raw'. It's DESIGN. The cameras will naturally appeal to different shooters, and making camera comparisons during a video rather than just TALKING about how successful the design of the EVA is at executing a certain kind of filming task is a waste of my time. Ok, it doesn't have AF. Then this camera is for the massive number of filmmakers who use wireless follow focus, or manual focus with gears, etc. I've yet to hear any reviewers talk about the expected workflow of using an EVA with an external raw recording JUST LIKE an FS7 or C500 or xyz. That's how THIS camera is designed to work, and at the end of the day it's not a c200 (nor is it ultimately trying to be).

    Aside from the Sh**ty LCD - the EVA1 is a great cam (for my needs), Panasonic sensors have great, realistic colour science. Codecs - internal to cheap SD cards are strong 10 bit 422 and the image is nice, lightweight body is awesome for long day shoots. My only issues so far - the menus/UI are ok but could have been better designed and again the LCD sucks ass, but the image straight out the cam is lovely, and thats what we all need :)

    • @AndersHolck
      @AndersHolck 7 років тому

      Both C200 and Eva1 are great cameras. You can't really go wrong with any. For me, touch screen DPAF and internal raw was important. Rest of the issues can be worked around. I love a very small rig with as few extras as possible. Hope you enjoy your camera. I'm sure I would have been as happy with the EVA as my C200 if I chose that path.

    It would have been nice to see a lot more footage. At the end of the day the noise and colors are better than the C200 (very odd magenta levels in the skin) in all the footage I've seen. It has some minor ergonomic issues, but most people who spend time with it seem to get to a point where it's quite usable. the C200 also has some pretty rough ergonomic issues as well.
    But on par, once RAW is added to the eva1 via firmware update, it will be a more balanced and flexible camera than the C200.

    • @vladimirtalijan
      @vladimirtalijan 7 років тому +1

      Canon C200 has 5 color matrix options and just one of them has magenta problems and it is the default one, so that's why you are seeing that problem. With the best color matrix you pretty much have an Alexa, there is no comparison between Canon and Panasonic color science, this is almost GH5 like and that is not serious filmic colors, but good video colors. C200 have some issues, every camera has it, but it has the least of all, it is the ultimate ergonomics cinema camera, nothing cinema can come close to it. And let's not talk about raw and the added brick for that, and don't forget the additional LCD/EVF, because this one is really bad, C200 has the best out of the box LCD/EVF on the market. This is a camera only for people who are in Panasonic ecosystem...for some reason. It's a Frankenstein with a competitor mount, which is hilarious..

    • @trevorpinnocky
      @trevorpinnocky 7 років тому +2

      Vladimir Talijan please let's dispense with the unnecessary mythology about Canon's color science. It's not an alexa.
      We're talking about out of the gate. For the end product a colorist has all the latitude they need to produce 'filmic' colors, whatever that is.
      The Canon is a decent camera, not great. And with a restrictive 8bit codec makes little sense for anyone who wants to shoot anything but raw. How can you talk about serious color on the one hand and then extoll a camera with such a thin codec on the the other?
      The eva1 gives up absolutely nothing to the c200 in terms of image quality or color. And on terms of noise, it's clearly and distinctly better.

    • @vladimirtalijan
      @vladimirtalijan 7 років тому

      Mythology ? That's how Panasonic users look at that ? I guess not everyone can see colors properly, that's a scientific fact..

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 7 років тому +1

      trevorpinnocky I wpuld disagree about noise level. C200 hamdles noise much better than the EVA1. maybe from 2500 to 6400 but they are still really close but after 6400 the c200 runs away with it in terms of high iso performance.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 7 років тому +2

      Vladimir Talijan yeah gotta agree. Ergonomically the C200 blows the EVA1 away. the EVA1 isnt a bad camera by any means but its definitely a middle of the road camera. I Would chose the other big three ceras in this same price point before the eva1. Even with the raw update, it will only be 10 bit amd external only. I'll take the internal 12 bit with more dynamic range of the c200.

    The list of cons were a bit ... so-so.I can narrow it down.
    There are two things actually wrong.
    The LCD is shite and too reflective, and the autofocus is "not quite" as good as the Sony FS cameras or Canon C200.
    Should have had an EVF.
    The grip is a personal experience though, and the other con's were much ado about nothing. But fair enough, they are "cons".
    Thh 2.0 Firmware update means the EVA1 does shoot ALL-Intra codecs 4:2:2 10bits
    4K up to 30p@400 Mbps
    2K up to 60p@200 Mbps
    2K up to 30p@100 Mbps
    I'd wish people would provide an "Update" video as these are important.

    Personally, I'm glad a Canon user weighed in on the ergonomics. Panasonic makes better cameras and usually has better ergonomics compared to the C100-C500, the C100 being utter trash. But Panasonic DID market this camera as being something DSLR users could upgrade to. (e.g. Canon DSLR users who insist on using photo cameras to film)
    Having Panasonic color science would be awesome, but if a user who is comfortable with the worst laid out cameras on the market, with the worst ergonomics, doesn't like it that really means something.

    • @zachhunter7897
      @zachhunter7897 5 років тому

      Very true. This camera also feels very very cheap and flimsy, and no viewfinder? I don't care how good the images are, build quality is cheap, it won't last. That's probably why the price is so low compared to the FS7II, a lack of build quality and skimping on the fundamental ergonomics that make a camera enjoyable and reliable to use.

    Tested the EVA-1 out yesterday and the I found that using the EIS introduced some warp effects ( similar to what you see with Adobe's Warp Stabilizer ) - it made a good portion of my footage un-workable.

      if you want to do manual focussing I'd grab the EVA1, also it has better colour science and a more organic film image plus superb tonality and highlight roll off, the sony has fabulous low light performance eye focus AF and 4 times slow motion in 10 bit UHD which is easy to grade, depends on what u prioritise, I own both and the EVA1 is a better camera

    No footage? Without test footage, it doesn't happen. And no mentioning of color science especially when you mention Canon? Hm, sounds a little bit biased to me. And - I hate the phrase "run and gun"... First, its never like this. Second its not only a matter of the camera body when doing this and it should be prepared with special gear for this. And last but not least: it is something requiring more sensitivity than this phrase expresses. (no offense, sorry needed to say that, this phrase always makes me spiky)

    We have been torturing our minds for three weeks, reading and watching reviews, trying the Eva 1 for about an hour in a store, comparing it with the FS7 and ... don't laugh ... with the GH5, grading test footage and finally decided not to get the EVA although we are Pana users for a long time. The reasons: exactly the ones that you mentioned. Furthermore we own M43 glass from the AF101 already. At the end of the day the EVA 1 wasn't just what we were expecting for that amount of Money. Picture quality: ok. Build quality: disappointing.

      Not a cleaver option they left back there AF100 owners (either limited or not a wild bunch), in not giving them a m4/3 version of EVA1. The JVC LS300 is S35 with a m4/3 mount and works. And yes, many of them and many GH series owners (which is a huge wild bunch this time) use full frame lens like Canon on their gear, so...

    I agree with Micha Lindstrom's remark on this, but I would say that comparions are kind of inevitable. However if you're gonna make comparrisons, then try to compare to more models, rather than just one.
    Anyway, I get that you can ony really compare to the one camera that you have used, and I appreciate the honesty in this review.
    To me, it does sound an aweful lot like you had just decided the camera is no good so you were going down of list of biases to validate that. But this is obviously not the case - it just sounds an awful lot like it. I have no dog in the race. I don't have this unit, and don't really plan to get it. Just saying.
    Anyway, you came to very different conclusions from this guy. So it's interesting to have a veriety of opinions.
