I just picked up the EVA1. Beautiful camera, your review was very helpful. The images sold me. My favourite feature is that the EVA1 records gorgeous slow motion in camera 4k 60p over 24fps is awesome and has a huge variety of recording options including proper 2K. I did fork out for a Zacuto Gratical Eye though which added to my outlay but I think it's worth it.
Hey, Philip thanks for spending the time to create one of these camera reviews. Always appreciate these long videos which I'm a sucker for. I know these take forever to create and I'm glad they still happen from time to time.
That subtle bubble pop at 10:05! Excellent long-form review, PB. Still not available in 4k for me, though. Agree with others - a video review with soul. Some of your clips were just beautiful.
Philip Bloom is the only person I think I could listen to ramble on a tech review on a camera for an hour,a very personable conversation the Kevin McCloud of Camera Reviews
Fantastic even though Percy (or any cat for that matter) wasn't in it until the end. I agree with you about a perfect camera taking aspects of every manufacturer together. I would even settle for Panasonic using all their own technology in one camera, such as the amazing IBIS of the GH5 in the EVA1, or Sony adding their electronic ND to an a-series camera for example. :)
its a good camera at the end and as other competitor, anyone have someting wrong in different aspects. The perfect camera doesn't exist, because if ine brand build the perfect camera it can be the perfect camera for everybody because everyone hav different needs. In Other the perfect camera could close the market for the other brands and for it self. I think since now one of the camera thats approccing to """""""perfection""""""""" is sony fs5 :) light camera, great image quality, great versatility, small size, modular ecc ecc, but i must say it.. panasonic with gh5 and EVA blow me away cause of image quality, the cinematic look, its very very fenomenal.
First of all THANK YOU! Your camera reviews are the first place I go when considering a camera for myself or to recommend to a friend. I can't pretend to know how much time and effort must go in to making these videos but I don't know what I would do without them! Second is this. Would you ever consider a Rambling Review like this of the BM URSA Mini Pro? I've seen the one you did for the URSA Mini and loved it but is there enough of a difference between the 4k/4.6k models and the Pro to warrant a separate Review? Thank you again for the time and effort you invest into my future as a filmmaker and all those like me!
Josh's Films I won’t be doing another ursa review. The 4.6k is close enough. I really just want to do reviews of cameras that interests me. That’s always been the case
Watched this on vimeo earlier. This review was super informative. I'm definitely adding the EVA1 to the list of cameras I want to rent and experiment with.
Even though I mostly never will be able to afford or need the equipment you are reviewing, I'm always enjoying to watch your reviews. There are always some great inspiring filmed bits - and let's face it: You are such a fun performer combined with an immense amount of knowhow, it makes for some great entertainment!
beautiful review Philip. Thank you for 1 hour of great content! I own the GH5 with a Speedbooster XL for canon EF. I've shot a short film on it and am really happy with it's performance. Especially the stabilizer let's you shoot handheld in situations I never could/would with other cameras.
The low light scenes are super clean and sharp. It is completely stunning to see. Thanks so much for the review. The information is very detailed and precise.
I remember seeing the first infra red landscape photo, Like a hidden world, fell in love with it immediately.. Perhaps a short film of strictly that with the right music, maaaaaan eye and brain candy... Cheers Philip... Rob from Regina, Canada..
Rob Overholt already done that! The Las Vegas one and a couple of others from a couple of years ago. I would like to do more with this camera but I had to give it back!
I can't believe i missed that! I just watched it... Awesome.. So craving some drone shots like these, Some place tropical with Jungles, monkey's, mountains and valley's ;)
So much to like about this review. I don’t care about the rambling style, I’m just glad to see a review from you on this camera. I’m also really anticipating NAB this year hopefully FS5 m-II has some A9 incorporation in it. Love the unstructured autofocus test and the slomo ending.
Great IR shots in Las Vegas! I’m in Las Vegas now. Just bought my first cinema camera at B&C Camera a few days ago, a Canon C100m2 to learn on. I wish I had stepped up to a proper video camera long ago!
Love your reviews and this new one is no exception. For some reason, the EVA-1 never struck me as an outstanding camera... and you answered that for me when you said that it just doesn't offer anything significant over the FS7, and that's why I didn't think it was too amazing. I do prefer the FS7 at this point.
Maybe stabilizing sensors in these cameras are difficult due to all those heat dissipation mechanisms that need to make contact with the sensor but at the same time are really heavy to practically stabilize? I'm just guessing.
Nice review as always. Been following all your work for quite some time now and I have to say, this one came across the most natural. Not a slight on your other reviews, but the frustration and general fedup-ness (word?) really came across. Proper EVF and LCD is what we want as consumers on our video cameras as well as all the bells and whistles, within reason. While it may be below 10 grand, its still alot for most people and companies maybe should listen a wee bit more to the consumers. Question I pose to you Phllip, what do you think the big guns are focusing on too much in their cameras, 4k, higher ISO to see in space etc, and what should they focus on that makes sense moving forward? Great vid sir, I hope this finds you well.
Excellent review, so true to the strengths and weaknesses. Forget about the GH5 review, you can kill two birds with one stone with the GH5s, current tests show it beats the a7s II up to ISO 12800 retaining better color. The a7s ii of course wins after at ultra high ISOs but it should be an interesting mash up. No stabilizer sure does cripple it for most of us. Percy is the best AF test for any camera.
I would never consider this over the FS5 with an Inferno recorder. But I always love watching your videos and listening to you Philip. I hope can make more reviews, thoughts on gear and anything else you want to make. And if we can dream our dream camera mine would be a camera with RED's dynamic range, Sony's global shutter, hight speed, sensitivity and electronic ND, Olympus's IBIS, Sigma's Foveon type sensor, Canon's AF and ergonomics, Fujifilms colors and dials, Panasonic's processing, Apple's user interface and finally Blackmagic's price and RAW. Btw have they sent you a GH5S yet? ;) Cheers
This camera down down samples from 5.7K to 4K (Similar to how the C100 would downsample from 4K to 1080P), does that mean the EVA1 gives sharpest or most detailed image for a camera in this price range?
Please review the Panasonic S1 :) It has 5.5-stops stabilisation, the Lumix lenses have a manual focus clutch, and the Sigma lenses (L mount and MC-21, also first-party to the L Mount Alliance) have mechanical focus+aperture. Not to mention the 5.7mEVF and unlimited 4K30 etc.
Very good review Philip as usual, very instructing. Thank you ! As you said eva1 compet with 3 years old camera.... so wait and see futur. If sony could have same dual pixel level quality ...Sony, adapt ibis and A9 AF on Fs7 III !)
Although the EVA1 is a great camera, I'm very happy that I choose the C200. The AF is miles ahead and the build quality is also better it seems. And the EFV on the C200 is pretty good I think, but I come from the C100 mk1 (the EFV of that is rubbish). The 10bit (non RAW) of the EVA1 is nice though and would like that on the C200.
Philip Bloom I guess I consider myself a prosumer. A professional that has access to prosumer pricing. Cameras under $10,000. Like the one you show here. It wasn’t a few years ago a smaller guy like me could ever afford 4K or RAW cameras. The game has opened up.
@@itsmadisonhughes sorry, I am saying I don’t know what monitor I was using as I couldn’t see any shots of one on the camera in there. It was 2 years ago but I always use a monitor on the tripod. My favourite is the Smallhd 702 touch and there is a review on this channel.
Great review Philip! Its too bad material quality/design of that LCD is so bad. Most will probably use a better larger external monitor anyways. I think EF mount is probably the best universal choice they could have made for super 35. Because of the large 42mm flange distance virtually any lens can adapted to EF mount with cheap adapters. Also Canon glass is some of the best out there as you mentioned and you can even adapt vintage manual glass as well, ive been having great success with older glass as of late!
Does anyone know the song/composer is for the music at 39:50? This music has been stuck in my head for *years* and i've been trying to find this information out with no success. Also, great review amd plenty to think about as someone who's considering buying an EVA1.
John Gomez Goodway I have used it a number of times. Pro detective tip: The full version of “Las Vegas in Infrared” is tagged in this video and it says the name of the track there. ua-cam.com/video/C97GTHYGrro/v-deo.html
@@philipbloom Thank you! I've heard this piece in a number of films but when I went searching for information on it I could never remember the films. Also, beautiful footage in the Las Vegas video. Very inspiring.
Of the sub $10,000 cameras... C200, EVA-1, FS5, FS7, Ursa Mini Pro (I know you didn't refer to it in this video), which would you grab for long form narrative shooting?
JM Kariuki if you buy the Sony, you'll need to spend extra to purchase the other necessities required to shoot raw or a good prores codec above 10bit 422. C200 shoots raw nice but so does the ursa. I'm no expert but I'd say the ursa because your money is going towards good versatile codecs. Prores XQ is so close to raw quality and saves a lot of space, but that's something you need to research. Canon might be better for stunning doc's with that lowlight and AF. But you could make good movies on the fs5 in 10bit 422 at 1080. All up to you
JM Kariuki I have shot with all minus the latest 2 (c200 amd EVA but I own the c100) and I will say this. If you are doing long form narratives and you have the time to set up your shots, the Ursa mini wins this easily for me. The Sony cameras are great (all these cameraa are great actually) but the Ursa mini IQ when exposed properly, is far better than the rest. Of all the sub 10k cameras it's the one I've seen whose IQ resembles the look of film the closest. However if you don't have the time to set up or you do short form narratives, I think the c200 would be the best best option followed by the fs7
Panasonic could have made a Super 35 sensor with a Micro Four Thirds mount just like the JVC GY-LS300. With that camera, you can adapt just about anything to it. But if you use a Micro Four Thirds lens that doesn't fully cover the sensor, you can compensate for it with Variable Scan Mapping. Just punch in. That's the best of both worlds, really.
How do you conform 60p to 25p (not this camera, but in general)? My Premiere struggles when I interpret the footage as 25p in a 25p timeline. It creates some weird drop or duplicate frames which makes the footage stutter. Same results with 4K60 drone footage and 60p Sony footage. Must be the weird mathematics behind it (59.94/25 = #%^*+). Because of this I have moved back to shooting 50p which is simple math to make it 25p.
that's odd. It absolutely should not do that if you confirm to the frame rate on your time line, it simple matches the frames to the timeline by playing xx times the speed.
Is it just me or are the true blacks not actually black, but a milky grey? Like the letterboxing in the video itself does not match the letterboxing applied my ipad.
Although not interested in this camera, I watched the full-length review for the pure entertainment! Now bit of an off-topic question: I had a look at Audio Network where you are getting the music clips from and I noticed they cost about $30 a piece (allowing UA-cam monetization)! Since you've used more than 10 in this video alone, did you really fork over $300 just for this review's music?!? I've been using Filmstro for a year now and had a look at EpidemicSound, but Audio Network seems to have a larger library, for the music I want at least.
Coming from PAL land I’ve been doing slomo in other cameras by filming 50p and then slowing down to 25p... but guessing by what your doing in this video I should have been shooting in 60p all along for smoother results - can you clarify??
Appreciate the longer video felt Netflixy docu style. Loved it. Why aren't these companies using XQD cards in these mid expensive cameras? I dont get it!
Philip Bloom, look at their website, they have a developer kit and a more consumer friendly version available now at around 4000 and 6000 euros respectively. They're accepting preorders for the consumer version, I'm not sure if they're already shipping this one but you should contact them.

Daniel Dougan but they didn’t
Daniel Dougan 3 months?
what does jewel sensitivity mean?
box rad dual
Too early, gotta wait for that 4K goodness to process.
Is it just me or are the true blacks not actually black, but a milky grey? Like the letterboxing in the video itself does not match the letterboxing applied my ipad.
Andy Beyer-Bowden grey is the new black
Although not interested in this camera, I watched the full-length review for the pure entertainment! Now bit of an off-topic question: I had a look at Audio Network where you are getting the music clips from and I noticed they cost about $30 a piece (allowing UA-cam monetization)! Since you've used more than 10 in this video alone, did you really fork over $300 just for this review's music?!? I've been using Filmstro for a year now and had a look at EpidemicSound, but Audio Network seems to have a larger library, for the music I want at least.
Have you checked out AGsoundtrax? It changed the game for me...
Music bed subscription is the way to go
Just curious, how well does the Canon C200 autofocus compare to the Sony A7R3?
Moonbeam Arcade c200 is rock solid. A73 is really good but not as good at tracking
Coming from PAL land I’ve been doing slomo in other cameras by filming 50p and then slowing down to 25p... but guessing by what your doing in this video I should have been shooting in 60p all along for smoother results - can you clarify??
Steve nope. Shooting in 60p to get slightly slower, not smoother. Stick with 50p better if you need it to be real time.
Philip Bloom yep got ya!, terrific review by the way, I really like this camera despite some bad flaws
Actually after the last FS5 upgrade, the lowest you can do is 2000 ISO with Slog.
tommy f. Yep
I really want a L mount versión 2024 of this camera
Great review! Would love to see a GH5 & GH5s review (at some point, take your time..)
Where you getting this lovely production music?
MrTegid you stopped before the end. The end is the best bit!
You got me there. I wouldn't have thought that was Audio Network. Impressive. Don't suppose you know where I can get a good bubble pop sfx?
don't use Mercury because that only uses your processor, you'll find Cuda render engine faster.
Lotfi KAZ i think you are ok the wrong video
..after 40 min... it´s still 360p... :-/
Appreciate the longer video felt Netflixy docu style. Loved it. Why aren't these companies using XQD cards in these mid expensive cameras? I dont get it!
I would love to see a review of the Axiom Beta from Apertus.
Epic bubble at the end by the way XD
JC I invested in that years ago. Will it ever appear??
Philip Bloom, look at their website, they have a developer kit and a more consumer friendly version available now at around 4000 and 6000 euros respectively. They're accepting preorders for the consumer version, I'm not sure if they're already shipping this one but you should contact them.
Hi Philip. I was just cruising the channel for Panasonic reviews. Any plans to review the GH6?
nope, sorry.
@@philipbloom I understand. Thanks for the prompt reply. Your reviews are the best online.
Thanks Philip, I'll buy a Canon C200 and Sigma 35mm
This or a Kinefinity? EVA1 looks very noisy in low light.
