Not every artist is meant to have long careers. I liked Dido and her singing. She probably didn't want to play the game in the music industry and live a regular life.
Nah I think she just didn’t have a sound that wasn’t going to go past a certain point. It’s not about the “game” and that’s a cop out. She was a part of a phase in music and that’s it.
I mean, she isn't retired and still had an audience so her career is being pretty long. She just isn't a popstar and that's fine, that was never what she was supposed to be.
I mean, sure, but at the same time, I feel like a lot of people - younger people in particular - forget that some of these artists have long careers outside of the pop charts. They make the "cross-over" once, maybe twice, then never again, but will still have their own dedicated fanbase in that genre of music. Another example would be Natalie Imbruglia, who is considered a OHW for her 1996 single "Torn", but seemed to have fallen off after that. Except she didn't. She ended up having a long, fruitful career in the indie/alternative world, similar to Dido. Kate Bush is another great example. She had already had an established career thirty years prior to Netflix using her song "Running Up That Hill" for Stranger Things, and she got a boost of popularity because the song was trending thanks to Netflix and TikTok. Obviously it's awesome to see the younger generation discovering and wanting these artists to receive the accolades they deserve, but sometimes there's more to the situation than "Oh the public wasn't interested in their music or the direction they were heading, so their career stalled/ended after that."/"The artist was fucked over by the Big Bad Record Executives and their career was cut short."
@@mielissa100ify she could have change her sound and the way she dressed to maintain relevant to the new audience. But she didn't. She remained the same without changing or evolving. That shows that she was a low-key person. Get a grip
It’s unfair to say she disappeared. She got at the top of her game in the early 2000 and then decided to live her live as she wanted. We should stop pressuring artists to do what we think they should be doing and respect their decisions to stop when they just want to enjoy a normal, less-celebrity life.
Totally agree, except she didn't left. She's not pursuing a pop star career - yes, but she's still there for her audience and she's pretty consistent in her music career. Just not as popular anymore. And one day if she decides to stop singing, we should respect her choice, of course.
My thoughts exactly. "Disappeared" has a negative swing to it, as if she couldn't take it but it just seems like her deliberate decision to live a "normal" life - after selling 30 million records, indeed. Others might struggle physically, mentally or get into all kind of bad habits and addiction, she just had a family life. She's not even out of the game and apparently played 60 shows for her last album all over Europe in 2019.
it's time people realised that you don't have to be the ultimate top tier elite star forever. She achieved what she wanted, didn't want what society expected her to want, and she moved on. The same goes for people who think 'views', 'likes' and 'subscribers' are any indicator of success or happiness. Dido is a cut above in this respect.
Yeah This happens all the time with artists. They reach a peak then wane in popularity and develop diehard fans that follow everything they do and go to their concerts.

Same! I consider “Life for Rent” my personal anthem. As someone who’s still renting a one bedroom and not quite where they want to be in life, the song is both a cathartic comfort and gentle reminder to keep aspiring. My all time favorite lyrics are “I've always thought That I would love to live by the sea To travel the world alone And live more simply I have no idea what's happened to that dream 'Cause there's really nothing left here to stop me It's just a thought, only a thought” Makes me cry cuz I want that so much in life and it can feel see so elusive and out of my grasp at times. I am grateful that I have gotten to travel a little bit here and there but I wanna see so much more. Definitely a song that I always play and feel comforted and inspired every time I feel dissatisfied about life.

Her father died between her 2 and 3 album and she took a break. Her third album in 2008 "Safe Trip Home" was less successful but it is very personal and beautiful and worth a listen. I recommend the song "Grafton Street" which is about her relationship with her father.
Safe trip home is beautiful. I thought all of the sad ones were about her father but I read quiet times is about someone who can't admit they have depression, which leads me to believe that day before the day may be about loss from suicide. Definitely an underrated peice of work.
She's still around and her loyal fans have not forgotten about her. Her latest effort is being part of a group with her brother Rollo and Sister Bliss. They go by R+ (R Plus) and have a single out called "My Boy", with her vocals. She may not be a mainstream artist any more but her talent is undeniable still today.

Love Dido forever and I love reading the comments about her impact on so many of us who grew up listening to her. I was so lucky to see her on tour for “Still On My Mind” which was another fully realized and stunning body of work. “Take My Hand” and “Life for Rent” are probably my all time favorite Dido songs. Even though I was a kid when “No Angel” and “Life for Rent” came out, both albums have still stayed with me and have managed to achieve a timeless appeal and appreciation that gets better with age. “Life for Rent” has and still is a personal anthem for me as I relate so much it’s message of one’s desire to truly take ownership of their destiny and desires even if you’re still “renting” life along the way. So glad she’s found a path that works for her and her priorities and I look forward to hearing more of her and her angelic voice and songs when she’s ready to share with us again
Dido did it her way. Which is rare for someone that became so widely known and famous. She has some beautiful songs that touch me still to this day. Her unique voice and style are timeless. I was listening to the album Life for Rent on a recent road trip and last year found her live in Brixton performance on You Tube its a great show.I Love Dido and am glad she didn't let herself get used up by the industry. I am so glad that you made this video. 😍 I have always loved Dido and her first album remains one of my personal favorites. Her music has always been so meaningful, and reflective, and relatable. She is definitely one of those artists that has a special, raw gift.
"No Angel" was always in my CD Player back in the days I discovered her, one of my favorite singers of all time, I remember introducing her music to my soon-to-be-wife and she loved her.
i remember hearing life for rent as a kid and i was mesmerised by the tone of her voice. looking back now, i think that's what drew me to Ellie Goulding, their voices are very distinct and intriguing
She didn't disappear. I went to a concert before the pandemic and it was fantastic! I bet she's working on something new and we'll see another great album one day.
There's only so far artists like her can go. That's why Dido, Norah Jones etc have a 2-4 year huge popularity boost and then just drift off into the distance.
What is it about Dido and Norah that results in theirs careers not being sustainable and basically precludes a longer career and relevance? Just interested since, for example, Lana del Rey sings ballads too and she is very popular - she also has unique looks maybe that's also why?
Well Didos first 2 albums sold around 30 million pure (!) copies together. Which is more than some artists entire album sales. She did well but the loss of her father hit her hard and she took some time for herself and released her third album 5 years later with little promotion and no tour because she said the songs are too personal :)
@@fipah5817 It's just marketing, nothing else. If you don't follow music television or radio channels or podcasts about what to listen to, she'll be still popular to you and you won't feel you lost her. I personally don't like what is promoted today, so I stopped listening to what is popular now (for the most part) and since then I discovered a ton of indie artists that I love that no one around me has ever heard of. The downside is that their stuff is pretty hard to find sometimes because, well, they are not as popular. But that's what collecting records is all about. I don't go for what's considered valuable, I go for what is special and rare to me personally and I listen to the music I love.
I love all of her albums and I don’t have a problem with her doing things the way she wants or waiting for as long as she needs to put music out. I know for sure that whatever she does, it’s going to have quality and I’m going to love it! ❤
I listened to her albums almost on loop when I had major depression 12 years ago. It was such a dark time and I can't listen to No Angel and White Flag anymore as it brings back so many painful memories. But I'm thankful that her beautiful songs were with me in those dark and lonely days (actually it was a half year period).
Maybe recently she hasn't been topping the charts like she used to in the 2000s, but Dido continues to release quality music. I absolutely adore her latest "Still on my mind" album.
Some singers prefer the art over the industry. Dido seems like one of those singers who won't compromise anything, and will only produce new material when she is ready.
Thank you for your work, Honest. Please also explore the different album eras of Shakira! She's so so so iconic and on the same level as beyonce and britney so it would be great to see a huge pop culture video essayist discuss her work and impact
Her album is literally called ‘life for rent’ which is a pretty clear message to her career that she’s only temporarily giving music her life, but it isn’t a lifelong commitment. She had her moment, made her money & that was evidently enough for her.
I loved her Girl Who Got Away album. “Let Us Move On” got me through a rough chapter in my life and I’m forever grateful. I loved her collab with Kendrick. 💕
She's stopped because she : 1. Lost her major label deal, which means no financial backing for her career going forward. 2. She comes from a very wealthy family, she's doesn't need to keep on with the career for financial dependency.
I LOVE DIDO! She’s one of my favorites. I’ve been following her since I was like 10 or 11, lol. I remember having her first album on CD. Even her most recent album i made sure to purchase Still On My Mind. I love her lyrics, the vulnerability in her music, and the sound of her voice. She’s a favorite of mine for sure.
I listen to her album “No Angel” on days when it’s raining. I love her so much. She brings a certain emotion to her music. Her voice is so calming to me.
I saw her live some years ago on her last tour. She is such a warm hearted yet witty person, her style is so relaxed and I can hear her voice for hours. No screaming, no cheap sexy behaviour....just music to feel good with some melancholic moments. Would love to see her live again!
She never disappeared though, she did what many artists have done in that when she left the pressurised environment of a big label she was then able to do things at her own pace. She has continued to do so, releasing new music when she feels it's ready rather than to label deadlines and the fact she is still around today in singing with her siblings, even if a little under the radar, shows she did the right thing. She hasn't burned out, hasn't gone off the rails and hasn't been in the headlines for weird behaviour or mental health issues brought on by constant pressure to perform so good for her.
I love her and her other maybe less known songs like Freedom and End of the night. She has this way of expressing sadness with a touch of smile - that's how I feel about her songs most of the time. And oh, she looks like Brene Brown!!! I just realized!
I love her. I saw her in Toronto and she joked about having a bad back and said she was medicated lol. Great concert and look forward to seeing her again or hear her new music. One of the very few artists I can listen to again and again. She will do what she wants to do and doesn't have to do anything she doesn't want to do. She's living life and that's what counts.
Thanks for this video. Dido hasn't disappeared anywhere, she is very much STILL ON MY MIND. She jokingly said herself after the release of STAN she would release a rap metal album titled SHITTY KITTEN. I wasn't aware she was a co writer on a Britney song. I listen to her frequently to this day out in the shop with Natalie Merchant, Bjork, Sarah Mclachlan, Indigo Girls, Paula Cole, Norah Jones, Tori Amos, Annie Lennox, etc, so many other Lilith Fair ladies and so do my neighbors!
So basically she didn’t disappear. She just took charge of her life and her own art work; not letting big labels or company squeeze every single drop of her blood for money. 😂 that’s a bad ass artist . A bad ass long term business strategy.
I see that she still makes music and that is amazing. For some artists it really is about the music and the fame and everything else isn’t necessarily wanted after some time or ever. Maybe that was her mindset and maybe she just gradually fell out of the spotlight but I love seeing artists who make great music and still get to live a normally private life.
Maybe it’s where I lived, I moved several times during this period, but I loved her voice and was amazed at how seldom her songs were played on the radio. I had kids and the radio was on all of the time. I know you don’t need kids for that, but if there was a moment of silence SOMEONE turned it on
White flag continues to be and always will be my favorite song from Dido because my mom would listen to it a lot. She passed away a few years ago so every time I play it, it reminds me of when she’d sing along to it and it makes me smile every time. Truly a beautiful song.
Dido NEVER disappeared. She evolved her music over several years and released albums with songs that matured with her experience. Every album is a treasure. Why does everyone expect artists to do the exact same things for decades and then complain and all their work sounds the same?
The success of "Stan" and "Thank You" running at the same time (Stan in rotation on MTV and "Thank you" in radio rotation) was so huge, that it was one of those things where it was hard for Dido to top, atleast on a mainstream level. Happens to a LOT of artists when they have a larger than life single and become known for that piece of work nomatter what else they do. Im sure she was still huge in the UK though...
Always loved her. One of those beautiful voices in modern music. The one that gives downtempo and trip hop a run for its money. Plus, she and I have the same birthday
Joss Stone is another brilliant female British artist who went quiet. Joss had a big scare in 2011 when two men had travelled to the county she lived in with plans to rob and murder her.
Norah Had Her Heyday Wuth Her First 4 Albums, Nothing Wrong With That.
Bro she made millions and cashed out it's not that complicated
I saw her on tour in Philly in 2018, seriously a dream come true and she was still amazing
Her voice is so soothing
I love all of her albums and I don’t have a problem with her doing things the way she wants or waiting for as long as she needs to put music out. I know for sure that whatever she does, it’s going to have quality and I’m going to love it! ❤
I went to see her live once, and was very impressed. That's a musician. She only cares about what she produces. Nice
Her last album is great also. One of the last concerts I remember going to before the pandemic.
it is I was so Excited when she was returning with a album !
Fun fact her brother was in the dance band faithless as well
Maybe recently she hasn't been topping the charts like she used to in the 2000s, but Dido continues to release quality music. I absolutely adore her latest "Still on my mind" album.
Some singers prefer the art over the industry. Dido seems like one of those singers who won't compromise anything, and will only produce new material when she is ready.
Dido music is so unique , there was no artists who made same music as Dido.
Thank you for your work, Honest. Please also explore the different album eras of Shakira! She's so so so iconic and on the same level as beyonce and britney so it would be great to see a huge pop culture video essayist discuss her work and impact
Just curious but what is Beyoncé’s contribution to music? Sometimes I just think she is overhyped
I want to thank you, for giving me some of the best music of my life. DIDO xoxo
I REMEMBER HERRR OMGGG
WE NEED HER BACKKKKKKKK
We missed you ,and your music too. Thanks for your talent Dido❤
we love our Dido ❤️🔥🇬🇧 she has her own style and sound, so she can drop when she wants I love that for her
Her album is literally called ‘life for rent’ which is a pretty clear message to her career that she’s only temporarily giving music her life, but it isn’t a lifelong commitment. She had her moment, made her money & that was evidently enough for her.
Dido was a whole vibe growing up in the 00s. It's as if time stops for a while when listening to it. A true blue musical icon! 💙🎶
Thank you! I'll share this!
This made me look her up and She honestly looks better than ever these days. She’s 51 and legit looks early 30s. Also her real name is amazing.
Dido was so good for the time. I bought No Angel when it came out and it’s such a nice mellow album to listen too. I love it.
No Angel is without doubt 1 of the best debut albums of all time.
I loved her Girl Who Got Away album. “Let Us Move On” got me through a rough chapter in my life and I’m forever grateful. I loved her collab with Kendrick. 💕
She's stopped because she :
Her voice it’s so warming! I’m still listening “Life for rent” every other day 🤗
I can't recall a single song she recorded and I am a huge music lover. I think they were forgettable songs. Her success is being exaggerated here.
No way!!! I was just singing _Thank you_
I listen to her album “No Angel” on days when it’s raining.
The residuals from Stan are enough to set her up for life. Sis collected her bag and left a legacy, she doesn’t need to keep making music
I recieved 'Life For Rent' on CD from my great aunt, and just wow... Dido is one of the greatest.
Two videos in one day.. let’s go 💃🏾💃🏾
I looooove her! I grew up with her. Her songs did so much for me. Was excited to see you talk about her.
My fav song from her is a less known "slide" love the ending of it where she really shows what her voice can do.
I love her and her other maybe less known songs like Freedom and End of the night. She has this way of expressing sadness with a touch of smile - that's how I feel about her songs most of the time. And oh, she looks like Brene Brown!!! I just realized!
Im experiencing Deja Vu right now, I SWEAR, this is like the 3rd Diddo video I've seen on his channel.
Saw her in 2019. She told the audience the reason she had been away for so long was because she had a kid
Nice video, but it’s titled “ why Dido disappeared” but you just explained her career not why she disappeared.
Dido is probably the most beautiful British singer ever.
Love "White Flag", "Hunter", "Here With Me" and "Thank You"!
"Thank" you and "Hear with me" got a big boost from the t.v show Roswell(original).
It would be nice to have her back, even if it was a stand alone single 💗
Love dido's voice, always calms me down and puts me in a relaxed mood. Talk about angel's voice.
So basically she didn’t disappear. She just took charge of her life and her own art work; not letting big labels or company squeeze every single drop of her blood for money. 😂 that’s a bad ass artist . A bad ass long term business strategy.
Man to this day I sometimes go back to listening Dido. Hands down some of the best songs ever made imho :)
Love Dido! The girl who got away was a really underrated album
She made some lovely music and had a great voice. I miss her music.
I still listen to her songs everyday.
Life for Rent was my theme song in the 2000s. The message is so right on!
I've always loved listening to "Isobel" and "Honestly OK" as well. The production is so unique and it has a trip hop feel to it.
Love this lady Dido,s voice is just brilliant. Thank you for this.
Her tea got cold, if you're wondering why
Her father died.
Can't listen very well to this voice.....the end of each sentence....i don't know
Maybe it’s where I lived, I moved several times during this period, but I loved her voice and was amazed at how seldom her songs were played on the radio.
One of the most beautiful women in music business. Love her music, One Step Too Far with FaithLess is a beautiful masterpiece, all time classic for me
Dido NEVER disappeared.
Wow. Thanks for doing this cos I LOVED dido back in high school. I mean, couldn’t stop playing white flag.
They got caught of course, but I think it shook her up. I followed her travels around the world where she sang with locals, singing local songs. It was very cool. There's a channel on YT.
Dido doesn’t disappear she just doesn’t have to constantly have to record music when the timing is right for her we are blessed with something special
She didn’t disappear she got out when she was on top of the game.
I was in high when she became famous and she she was fabulous. Some of my classmates made fun of her and called her Dildo🤦🏻♀️🙄. I hope she’s taking care of herself and at least she won’t end up like some who got completely destroyed by the music industry…
My Lover’s Gone is so underrated and have a certain mystery, this will always be my favorite Dido song
Thanks for your video, I'd forgot about dodo,I'm off to listen to her now.
