Today, I examine Vanessa from 'Speak English with Vanessa'.
How did she do?
Watch and find out!
You can learn more from Vanessa at her UA-cam Channel

Some of the interesting language that Vanessa used is given below.
For a full analysis of her language and performance, pop over to

PART 1 Introduction
QUESTIONS
Let’s talk about your house.
Do you live in a house or a flat?
What’s your favourite room?
Is there anything you want to change about that room?
ANSWERS and COMMENTS
This is a transitionary time for me = a time of change
I would say my favourite room is the living space 😀A nice way to give an opinion
It’s filled with personal mementos = personal souvenirs
It would be really nice, if this room opened up into the kitchen 😀Nice use of conditional for a change you want to make
Because I have a toddler it’s nice to keep an eye on him = "a ‘toddler’ is a young child
/ ‘keep an eye on = look after and watch carefully"
Part 1 Topic - Pets
QUESTIONS
Do you have a pet?
Do you like animals?
Did you have a pet as a child?
ANSWERS and COMMENTS
I do, in fact I have two pets, I have two cats 😀Good way to clarify and give more information
One is a black cat with some white markings = shapes or patterns on the surface (of the fur)
I do like animals, but I don’t like the upkeep of animals = the process of giving them what they need (used for animals, people and buildings)
It’s not always nice to have to do the daily upkeep 😀notice the repeated use of ‘upkeep’ but with a new collocation - ‘do the daily upkeep’
I had a few pets but the main pet that I had was a cat, a Siamese cat named Dodger who in fact lived for 18 years and passed away just two years ago 😀Good use of relative clauses make complex sentences showing off good range of grammar
Passed away = died
Part 1 Topic - Rubbish
QUESTIONS
What do people usually do with rubbish in your country?
What do you think when you see rubbish on the roads?
Do you ever recycled paper and plastic?
ANSWERS and COMMENTS
It’s becoming more popular to recycle…things that can be recycled…if the recycling is actually being recycled 😀Notice that although Vanessa repeats the word ‘recycled’, she is using it in different forms, showings can use it flexibly
Some people feel sceptical and don’t even recycle = Have doubts about something, don’t fully believe it
It’s kind of mind-blowing to me = Extremely surprising
It’s a no-brainer, of course I will pick up my trash = An easy decision to make, or simple question to answer
Part 2 Topic - CUE CARD
Describe a friend or a person who encouraged you to achieve a goal.
You should say:
- Who this person is
- What this person encouraged you to do
- How this person helped you
And explain why this encouragement help you to achieve the goal
ANSWERS and COMMENTS
I dropped out of the class = Stopped attending a class
She helped me to really start from the beginning, step by step = One step at a time
I caught on a little bit more = Understood
She gave me a wonderful idea which was to become an au pair = Live with a family in a foreign country to learn the language, and look after the children
She helped me to sign up, create a profile.. 😀Notice with the second verb (create), we can leave out the the infinitive ‘to’ of the verb (help). This omission of the ‘to’ is common in natural speech.

I could not help myself from smiling throughout the video seeing Vanessa. She is such an exuberant person. Loved this interview. :)
She's been my English teacher on UA-cam since 2017!
She is brilliant and helpful teacher and I learnt many useful vocabularies!
She is great - and always has new and interesting videos, I thoroughly recommend her channel for IELTS students too.

Seeing two great teachers together is wonderful. I really love both of you.
Very brilliant! She's smart. She can give answer very quickly!
I followed your tips and tricks, and I scored an overall 7. Thanks a lot!
it s so low key to listen both of you.i cracked up when she said i forgot your question. that s the kind of podcast i really enjoy to listen to. thanks to both of you you made my evening
She answered exactly in IELTS style but very still naturally. I think this is exactly what speaking examiners would expect , straightforward and logical responses. I noticed that she consciously controlled the length of her answers and avoid making it too long and redundant. This video is really useful and listening to Ms Vanessa is really satisfying.
yes, exactly and she's native speaker ^^
Thank you for your informative video. I'm making some 'bookmarks'/time stamps for future referencing.

ENGLISH speaking is an art which relates to Unification of ideas.Umesh Prasad Singh IELTS Trainer Meridian overseas in Jaipur and Motivational speaker as well
Love this episode ♥️ more please.
WOW! Nice to see both ❤️
I really enjoy watching this video, you are so cool!!!
Keith, how can I practice like Vanessa is doing in this episode?
An authentic Band 9 sample
Hello Keith, please do this with Lucy also...hehehehehe..thank you...Vanessa is really a good speaker and teacher as well...GodBless...
Just imagine...when I can speak fluently like these great persons
Guess vanessa,
If you and I were given a chance to become IELTS examiners, we’d change it’s style to more of an American English unlike at the moment, it has more of a Brit influence!!
She is outstanding 👌
In part 2 I would use some high class topic vocabularies such as charismatic, down-to-earth, resourceful, inspiring, motivating, influencing and many more....
One needs to use appropriate vocabulary not necessarily high class ones
@@poonam-kamboj You are right... but in part 2 you get cue card to describe ( person, place, activity, object and experience most of the cases ....therefore, you need high class topic vocabulary ....so that, you can achieve higher band score ....that is true....
14:00 I was alone at home and this scared the soul out of me.
Same here
🤣🤣
😅🤣🤣
Scholar Vs Scholar .........Great...Awesome....Mind Blowing....Zakkas
Best cross-over episode ever😂🔥
Keith like using the word fantastic
She is incredible
ESTOS SON LOS CROSSOVER QUE FORJARAN A LAS NUEVAS GENERACIONES
Where is the analysis of the test?
great.. learned a lot.
See a native english speaker and at the same time an english teacher being nervous for taking a mock speaking test, so how much more for a non-native speaker who will take the actual test
@Keith
I appreciate if you add transcript in your videos.
thank you
Great!
I really Like it!😄😄😄
I was spooked by a loud clapping sound effects Keith 🤣 I thought someone's really clapping near me.
And my teacher told to me that u shouldn't use hand while speaking is it true?? Should I use or not
Of course you can, it is quite normal for some people to do that. The examiner evaluates what you say, not what you do.
This is super helpful!!!!!
You are super awesome sir
Hello Sir...just wanted to ask if cue card part scores the highest or score is distributed equally among 3 parts.
Score is spread across the whole test.
On the part of pet, if am asked and I don't have any pet and I don't which to have how do I respond.
You could say, 'I don't have a pet, and don't want one, but my friend Tom has a pet, he has a....' So basically, you can talk about someone else. This is better than saying nothing.
@@EnglishSpeakingSuccess thanks so much sir
You are both amazing ♥️♥️♥️
Venessa is quite sweet!
Its interesting that she can put interrogative in part 2.
Can we do gestures during the actual speaking test?
Sure - if that is how you usually speak, but don't RELY on gestures to explain things. Just be natural!
I want to speak just like both of you what should I do?
Practice lots
astonishing..
Hey it's amazing but I wanna ask u that could we use woona goona??
Sure that is natural spoken English
Hello keith i wanna ask you something about new criteria of speaking in 2020.
Because my some friends told me the speaking topic questions or cue cards are change in this year
The cue cards change every 4 months - they add some new ones, and reuse some of the old ones. The evaluation criteria does NOT change at all.
she’s so cute omg 🥺
Thanhs, it is quite useful
Vanessa or Fluency? :))) Thank you so much.
I don't know but doesn't Keith look like (Vanessa's husband) Dan's father? 🤔
🙄🤣
Love & respect from Pakistan
Which words she used plz tell us
English, I think....
Vanessa is such a cute angel 🥺
No doubt, if some of my teachers are like her, i definitely will have a much better version of my life...
Love thank
Wow she has a great smile 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
