A miracle run from Alcaraz. He missed almost the entire clay season with the forearm injury, never reached his peak level in any match, and still won it. Kid’s a genius and, above all, has nerves of absolute steel.
I feel like his experiences at RG, especially his run to the SF round, were what he leaned on when the confidence wasn't rock solid. He's already a legend no matter what else happens.
Regarding the conversation about Hawk Eye: In the past days I have been reading much up about the system and some people in the comments have also been helpful clearing some things up, but maybe you can talk about more in depth, Gill: Apparently 2,2 mm is the margin of error tested in cricket. Actually, in some testings it showed a wider margin of error for tennis of 3,6 mm. But the real problem starts here: Hawk Eye does not measure the bounce of the ball (that would be the Foxtenn system), but part of the trajectory of the ball in flight, predicting were it is going to land, and calulates the mark. This leads to errors, because the system does not fare well with weather fluctuations as for example wind changes, which in this final was one of the big factors (and the reason why apparently Zverev and Carlos varied on the return more). But there is more to the Hawk Eye situation: Roland Garros used to use apparently Hawk Eye Lite (I dont know if that is the actualy system in place still), which is not even calibrated properly and is apparently based on the TV cameras instead of High Speed cameras. Also a note regarding that: The Hawk Eye system on clay is notoriously bad (wider margins of error in the past compared to other surfaces) and has to be recalibrated for each match accordingly, which is not what is done on RG.
As far as I'm concerned, the image that we saw on TV it was not a hawk-eye image or something like that, it was a TV image as you have said. There is no hawk-eye system in Roland Garros, so the umpire was the one who had the best view of the marks of that ball. Zverev coulnd't have credit because he tried to get good balls when they were actually bad balls confusing the umpire previously.
Why does everyone have the need to make excuses for Sinner? Cramps, hip, surface, not a good serving day…It’s a men’s game- everyone’s hurts, everyone is nervous, everyone has their better or worst days. the ones who handle it better wins. It’s simple
Well said, none of the analysts picked Carlos to win. They started to get on the sinner bandwagon. Sinner is a hard baseline hitter from both sides but has no variation. He is also not a natural athlete. Alcaraz will have difficulty playing sinner only on indoor hard courts. Alcaraz still has a much higher ceiling and winner's mindset.
What a fantastic podcast! One of the best definitely. My only complaint is that it should have been longer. Steve Flink gave us the most accurate description to date of Carlos Alcaraz when he referred to him as “a virtuoso”. That’s exactly what he is. Alcaraz borrows from the very best and creates something uniquely inspiring, no different than a Paganini or Picasso. He is the Picasso of tennis. A once in lifetime talent. Agree completely that Tsitsipas should have invested in a different coach long ago. Tbh, same goes for Zverev. I wondered why you your conversation didn’t touch on Rune? He’s got some attitude issues but is a huge talent and definitely still in the mix.
I love sinner but I didnt respect the fact he brought up the surface after the loss when Alcaraz is the youngest to win a slam on every surface, if Carlos sees that comment I'm sure it will motivate him to beat Sinner at Wimbledon just to prove he's built different
Alcaraz has Stefanos number Gill. You thought otherwise, but Carlos is so confident at the moment that there is no discussion. Stef needs and inspiring performance, snd Carlos to have a bad day. Not now.
Why does everyone make excuses for Jannik when he’s injured? So was Carlos? Are Carlos’ injuries not important? The guy missed basically the entire clay season. But let’s say Jannik was injured that’s why he didn’t win! Gimme a break! Biased the house down boots.
I get where you're coming from but I don't think they have a super bias towards Sinner like I think you're saying. Both Gill/Flink said they believe Alcaraz has a slight edge over Sinner in the long run. I agree they should've spent a little more time saying "while Jannik had issues, lets praise how incredible Alcaraz was to get through this 5-setter with the problems he's had too". But I don't think the reason they didn't cover that was because of a pro-sinner stance and moreso because they already have higher expectations for Alcaraz on clay. Flink said numerous times in this video stuff like "The one match where you can't let something like this happen is against Alcaraz" and "it's so important to take that 2-0 lead against Alcaraz, even though he's still not out of it then..." All of this sounds more to me like they've already put Alcaraz on such a high pedestal from his previous accomplishments, that they were more interested in talking about how Sinner could've pushed this game even closer. I still think you got a good point that they didn't praise Alcaraz enough, but I don't think at all that they're anti-Alcaraz.
Conclusions: 1 whenever Sinner losses is coz illness or phisical issues like Novak. Carlos played no role. 2 Sinner will keep improving but Carlos who is almost 2 years younger, showed no improvements nor they are expected. 👏

Did Flink just said that Alcaraz defeated Sinner only because of Sinner's physical problems? It seems that Sinner only loses when he is not healthy, otherwise he wouldn't lose a single match. They said the same after Sinner lost to Alcaraz in Indian Wells and also after he lost to Tsitsispas in Montecarlo.

Absolutely. Ruud was toying with Zverev with forehand, slice backhands, drive backhands, drop shots etc. and when he moved and stretched well this was more likely a Ruud win in 3 or 4 sets if not 5. But let's give Zverev credit here. He won. Last year Zverev was a bit off in the same situation.

Agree Steve on Novak that RG makes me feel more confident! His tennis was actually pretty damn good. He would of squashed Ruud and likely beaten Zverev. A final win would have been unlikely but even so positive signs form wise at least!
No he wouldn’t he barely beat opponents well below in terms of skill and mental game who where barely top 30 opponents, sure no one comes close to Novak on mentality but he would have been outplayed by Ruud and zverev no doubt. Given that he played back to back 4 hour matches and he probably would have taken 5 sets on those 2 matches, he never could win a slam playing more than two 5 set matches when he was 27 impossible for him to do it at 37. Steve flunk is just a Novak fanboy never has been objetive about him on these videos.

I personally know people from atp and i asked them how was Jannik last Monday when they brought him the n.1 trophy. If he was happier with n.1 or angry for loosing the semi with Carlos and they told me the second one. He wants to win matches and tournaments. He wants to beats Carlos. And at the end of the match he was really upset with himself!
In defense of Tsitsipas' comments - he had been complaining about the extended grunt during the match and has done other silly things towards Carlos before, like hitting the ball at him pretty targetedly. I think his comments might have been in part because he didn't want to come across as a sore loser or as if he had any anger towards Alcaraz. That was my read of it, though I understand why it made you feel that way regardless
Gil, love your podcast, youtube show, always super insightful, interesting, smart, consistent, high quality content. Respectfully, will have to push back a bit on your comment that in the 5th set EVEN IF zVVVerev (please, get it right Mr. Flink, thank you!) gets that call and the score goes to 2-ALL, that it was still trending towards Alcaraz. I don't think that you can make these types of statements in sport, because everything can change. Playing at 2-All is a whole other world than playing at 3-1 in the 5th set. I would say the correct opinion would be to say that we have absolutely NO IDEA how the match would have ended had it gone to 2-ALL, maybe alcaraz still wins it, maybe he doesn't and Sasha pulls it off. But to say that this call doesn't really matter as much, I completely disagree. Otherwise, Gil, you are super awesome. Love your channel, and wish you continued success. First started watching you years ago, when you used to jump on to Jeff Salzenstein's youtube show to talk tennis. You remind me of a young Max Kellerman, when he was on public access and used to talk about boxing. You both have a jedi-level of linguistic mastery and knowledge of the sport you love just like Kellerman.
Regarding the 15/40 double fault call: you failed to mention the biggest part: the umpire turned off his head cam AND did not show the Hawkeye replay animation at the time.
Sinner objectively wasn't ready for this slam. Carlos injury didn't keep him from getting fit. Jannik had to completely stop for three weeks prior to RG. In an interview before RG he said clearly that he had no high expectation because there is no room for miracles in such a demanding slam tournament if you are not fully prepared. You can afford playing with weeker players and make it through. You can't afford a 5 set match on clay with a genius like Carlitos if you are not well prepared. After the third set he got out of gazoline. His miracle was taking Carlos to the 5th set. I think his only chance to win was in 4 sets. When he lost the fourth I think he knew it was game over. One question for you Gill: do you think Jannik made a step ahead from Indian Wells in terms of counterpunching the Carlitos high rpm shaped balls? Until he had gazoline in the tank I had a positive impression about this but I'd like to know what you think about it. Thanks for your great Analysis.
Gill, I really like your content. I think you are the best tennis analyst out there, and I respect your opinion more than this other Flunk guy. I would like you to push back on some of his opinions, like the one about using the lineswoman’s call. You talked about this and said it was a stupid take because the mark is right there! You even mentioned archaeological evidence! I know you are respectful towards your elders and might avoid getting into discussions, but I think it would be good for the channel and for this other Flunk guy to get a bit more controversial for the sake of a better argument. Those are my two cents. Keep up the great work, Gill!
@@jacobschmidt2709 I don’t like Flunk at all; he is too biased. During last year’s Wimbledon final analysis, I was rolling my eyes. I think he’s just not objective. sinner ,alcaraz, medvedev they will win every big title remaining in this year for suere ,but sinner is the clear favourite to win everything on grass or hard he will remain no.1 for long time
28:00 No, in Monte Carlo, the umpire did not read the mark. She just brainlessly let the point continue despite the doublefault. Gold badge silver by now. And it was so far out that Sinner knew he himself should've stopped the point. That Masters has a big asterisk next to it - crazy how the clay court season was "taken away" from Jannik, hip and all. Tho Carlitos is yet a little better than him on clay.
Carlos was injured through 80% of that so called Clay court season. You’re forgetting 2020 Sinner got to RG QFs and was a more serious threat to Rafa than Novak even
Alcaraz at the end deserved the win but cm on?! Sinner didn't play at 100%?? He stoped for 3 weeks without playing / running or even touching a ball and he trained for a week before the tournament. We will se his revenge in Wimbledon, do doubt. The match was way more close than my predictions.
Alcaraz wasnt either at his best, hitting injury. Remember he stopped Sinners undefeated run when he was playing his best, and now, tot being at his best, he still won the tournament.
What people likes to forget about Sinner (or maybe they like to disregard it) is, this is his first season as top elite player. This year, it is the first time he plays all these tournaments in top form and he won AO, SF at IW, won Miami and SF in RG, all of his best results in his career. But when you look at the comments, it sounds like he is 35 and won his only slam this year and choke at RG. Before SF, a good amount of people thought he would lose in straight sets which was also weird. And yes, he was injured and also ill. He came to RG with 9 days training, what is so wrong to say this? And the same people kept saying that he would lose in every round because if hip+his worst surface. Why is it wrong to say it now? Does it ruin your narrative to criticize the guy? He also said that his hip is fine, this was not an excuse for his defeat and congratulated Carlos. What more do you want from the guy? Another thing about age thing like he is 10 years older than Alcaraz. And the reason he is getting this spot at 22 (which is also VERY young) is because he changed sports at 13, focus tennis seriously and he reached this level at 9 years. And to me, that is kind of miracle and he is kind of anomaly but that also doesn’t fit many others narrative because there should be only one wonder kid, no? Well you are wrong. If you don’t like the guy, move on but stop downplaying what he has achieved so far. And the bad news for you, he will win more.
Please remember that we did not see any success from Carlos in 11 months prior to RG with the exception of Indian Wells, which seems to be Carlos territory. Lets not dump on Sinner too much, he has it all over Carlos in many ways..
Sure, if Alcaraz had won the third set in both SF and F like he should have, then the conv .... wait the conversation would have still been the same because he won them both.

Please try having a sensible discussion instead of calling me a hater based on a mere opinion. You sound more like a fanboy of Novak than a tennis fan.
I wish Steve Flink could pronounce Daniil correctly
I personally know people from atp and i asked them how was Jannik last Monday when they brought him the n.1 trophy. If he was happier with n.1 or angry for loosing the semi with Carlos and they told me the second one. He wants to win matches and tournaments. He wants to beats Carlos. And at the end of the match he was really upset with himself!
On clay courts, Foxtenn technology exceeds the capabilities of hawk eye. RG should implement it.
I'm surprised only 15 thousand people have seen this. Great discussion and analysis.
I think it would be a miracle. but if Novak did get the US Open he would break Rosewall's record for oldest man to ever win a Slam.
It is always better to rely on a machine than human judgement; which more often than not is erroneous.
Thanks for this comment. I agree with you about not knowing what would happen.
Thank you both for your measured opinions.
can you tell me best match of rg
Excellent job as always.
Ruud has Zverev number on clay. I fully believe his illness is the main reason Alex got through.
Regarding the 15/40 double fault call: you failed to mention the biggest part: the umpire turned off his head cam AND did not show the Hawkeye replay animation at the time.
The umpire does not control either one of those things. That's up to the broadcast director.
@@GillGross wow, I didn’t realize that. Still a tragedy, but not the umpires fault
Gill,
I really like your content.
Gill, Andy Roddick, Steve Flink, and Joel Drucker are all equal in my eyes.
@@jacobschmidt2709 I don’t like Flunk at all; he is too biased. During last year’s Wimbledon final analysis, I was rolling my eyes. I think he’s just not objective. On the other hand, Joel is more of a philosophical commentator than a tennis analyst, but I like him. Roddick is great, but Gill goes more in-depth.
Do you think the Stef and Zverev both need to get new coaching, even though they clearly don't deal with different coaches well.
sinner ,alcaraz, medvedev they will win every big title remaining in this year for suere
,but sinner is the clear favourite to win everything on grass or hard
he will remain no.1 for long time
@fadygoda ok sinner fan boy
Sinner needs to stop the girlfriend stuff and really focus. I hope he gets that.
You’re forgetting 2020 Sinner got to RG QFs and was a more serious threat to Rafa than Novak even
Sinner ha fatto un miracolo per arrivare a semi finale ha perso massa muscolare quindi non penso solo che un po' di tempo
It's virtually insurmountable for a one-dimensional, defensive diabetic to go through the 3-out-of-5 major events with success.
I mean, he should have done it at the USO 2020 and may have at the 2022 FO if not for that injury.
Who cares if Sinner wasn’t 100 percent? Carlos was injured too? Like stop making excuses and take the L already!
@@andieolivia starting to see who Steve flunk favors of the new guys, bias against Spanish player maybe ?
@@Spacejuno Nah he's been biased against Alcaraz since the first of the videos of this kind her that I watched more than a year ago.
@@monkeonthee yes on the Wimbledon one, that’s what I’m saying.
Weakvak is done😂😂😂😂
Imbecile. LOL. Congrats on saying that for 8 years, and then what happens to everyone might have finally happened.
Time will tell. I still believe he at least has one more slam in him. Nadal, on the other hand, is kaput.
carlos break are also fake & effect the result, choking, robbing but the champ is champ it is histry no any conversation fill it
What people likes to forget about Sinner (or maybe they like to disregard it) is, this is his first season as top elite player.
Alcaraz does not walk on water, he has many flaws.
Please remember that we did not see any success from Carlos in 11 months prior to RG with the exception of Indian Wells, which seems to be Carlos territory. Lets not dump on Sinner too much, he has it all over Carlos in many ways..
@janetterceira4201 😂😂
If sinner won that 5th set and the match, this analysis would be completely different.
Sure, if Alcaraz had won the third set in both SF and F like he should have, then the conv .... wait the conversation would have still been the same because he won them both.
@@monkeontheehow far back you want to go with your comment? I’m talking about 1 tournament, this result could have been easily in sinner favor.
@@skinme2340Clearly I'm talking about said tournament too.
@@monkeonthee this comment got old really soon. Alcaraz is the best yet losing R8 and losing points in Queens. Sorry man.
