"What's the worse thing that could happen?" Well, that depends on what that hose operates, what the lift is doing when that hose pops, who is working on it or near it, etc. I can't believe a local hydraulics shop couldn't come on site and make a fix to that hose. I hope you got a signed release of liability on this "repair". Best luck. Enjoyed the video.

These machines have check valves all over it just for this problem on the lift section to stop cylinder in its tracks. the hose that needs replacing is a before or after regular hours, repair, they are not fun to replace. Go find a electrician and get some of there cable soap they put on big wire cables and smear it all over the hose before you start.this hose will drag all over the other hoses and create a friction and drag.Contractors (all of them) hate to pay anything for service and or repair of equipment, get-N-- by is what they want as long as it does the job. Cash those checks as soon as you get them. Take notes back to back up what they said. That junk is a good money maker for you but it such a pain in ....Remember you repair only and the oils are up to them and flats and fuel etc. top offs ok.That piece of equipment is paid for along time ago and leasing it to the job site is pure profit. If it blows up for engine no biggie. Push it off to the side, get another one and it will never change.

@@MY-ml5rp you are probably right. I tend to be a little (ok, a LOT) gun shy on things that can come back and haunt me. That's a big reason I've never started my own company. I'll take my check and go home and night. Let the boss worry about the rest of the business.

Yeah, that hose looks like it controls the bucket tilt, assuming Ivan got the routing right. I wouldn't trust it. Unless he took it up to full extension and kept trying after that I wouldn't consider it leak free. Pressure in those lines is going to spike once it hits a limit. Most of the hoses and fittings are rating to 10,000PSI, those injector setups usually around 100. And if it fails at the tippy top whoever's up there is gonna have a fun time coming down. Been there, wouldn't want to do it again. I can't imagine that getting the correct type of repair fitting would have been that much more expensive, after all they're already paying Ivan for diagnostics and at least 1 repair.

Im pretty sure there are safeties in place for something like a burst hose. It would not come slamming down or anything. Would be stuck where its at. Be a pain to climb down a ladder or have to be gotten down with another lift but thats about it.

There are reusable hydraulic fittings that can be installed in the field. A male and female JIC fitting for that hose would be a better repair, like a Parker 20320 and a 20620. Is that a -6 or -8 hose?

Genies do run smoother, but they are a pain to t-shoot. They are based on harness code to repair. From me to you, I wouldn’t have repaired that line that way. They would have just had to wait to replace the line. That’s not safe at all, and could fall back on you. OSHA would have got on you for doing that..... No good Ivan.... No good.....

In Australia it would depend on whether it's a union job or a private site. Union construction sites are anal on safety, strictly by the numbers. Private construction ( domestic housing for example) like this looks to be, the only time the shit would hit the fan is if there's an accident and Worksafe would go over the machine with a fine tooth comb and everyone from the construction company down to anybody who worked on the machine would be in the shit if something wasn't right.

When I was a kid I worked with my electrician dad. Honestly I've known two types of contractors when it comes to construction. The type that don't see maintenance as useful and those that kept their machinery in meticulous shape. Guess which one would have band aid repairs and would have their equipment constantly break in the field. Also guess which one was easier to deal with (if you were using their services that is).
Keep up the non-auto repair videos though. These are cool, I never put any though into things like lifts breaking down and these are some of the best videos you've got.

Just some FYI info. When completing a job with a temp fix like the hose always get a signature on your work order under a comment that states it is unsafe for use and is to be replaced. Cover your butt as we say. Also when it come at hoses most shops will make hoses to sample. Take hose off, take to shop, make new one and install. If not there are what we call farmer fittings. They are put on and bolted together to create a crimp. Not a long temp solution but a much much better temp fix. They should be available at a farm supply store. BTW Im sure that tie strap will hold but you can buy that Ford alternator stator connector (pigtail) anywere on the web for about $7. Just remove the old and new connector housings from their respective terminals and install the new housing on the old terminal.

  • @jfinnall
    @jfinnall 4 роки тому +2

Well, I am going to chime in with everybody else. Good catch on the alternator connector but the hydraulics can effect life and limb. At least verify what that hose operates. There should be a way to do a field repair of the existing hose that is permanent and safe. Unless the hose has more damage that requires it to be replaced completely. Probably not worth the expense to purchase the tools and fittings, better to call someone who has them. I would just hate to see the patch come back on you as being responsible.

Did the same exact thing for a busted hose on car lift with vehicle up. Worked fine up until I got the hose replaced.

Look for Parflex field repair kit.
Go to your nearest air/hydraulic repair facility, they should have them.

I hate to say it, but, please make sure they change that hose asap, or at least get a hydraulics firm to come out with the correct crimp machine to join that line correctly. I don't have a clue about how that genie is plumbed - where the check valves are, or if it's got any kind of mechanical lock mechanism on it, but when i used to work at sea we had a deck crane where a hose blew out just in front of a check valve - the check valve that held the boom up - boom came crashing down and flattened the bulwarks on one section of the stern deck! If your going to get the job of replacing the line that's blown, i would advice removing the old one first, lay it out on the ground and measure it's length exactly, then go and get a new one made up at your local hydraulics place.

As long as it's temporary it's okay, I don't like it anymore than you do, as for maintenance it might be the norm for that company all you can do is talk with manager, check and advise change the oil and filters as needed, sounds like they need some help

That's a lot of quirky failures on that boom lift in a short time. If I was a foreman I would be watching the operator of that equipment and what happens when that thing is shut down. Some crazy people like to mess with equipment and get their jollies in the strangest ways. Is this normal for this equipment or is someone purposely sabotaging the equipment?

That repair is not one that I would have made or have it done to my equip......NO SAFE. Best to keep you garage liability insurance at very high limits and current.
And I would not have made a video of it. Lawyers love you....especially one of your last comments on the repair...not one you feel good about, etc...When it blows that repair and falls to the ground and injury or even death... Look out. The jury will hang you.
    Enjoy your videos, overall.

that is one thing i never understood is why dint they use steel tubing and just short hoses on the joint end. some of those that telescope are wadded up around the link belt 3 times. yes the tach signal is one phase of the stator inside the alternator

I work on these for a living, Privately owned booms are the worst, they buy them from auctions for a few grand. Rental companies know these booms/equipment are ripe to be gotten rid of due to all this type of crap happening. The owners are bitching when there clapped out machine is down but has any maintenance been done? Hell no that costs money, I will caution you on repairs to to a machine like such, any system that isn't put back to proper spec that has been modified by a quick fix. that can fail and can cause accident or fatality that leads to an investigation (due to jobsites being governed by WSIB and or OHSA) you can be fined / Charged/ or sued for such actions, so do these types of repairs at your own risk. This is why These types of arial work platforms need Annual inspections . I will tell you an operator or an owner of a boom like this will run on a failed patched hose and it will blow again so cover your ass at all cost. Not trying to be condescending but something so minor can snowball like nothing in a second, Also if your not familiar look up polices on lock out tag out of equipment. It's within your right to protect yourself and others around you. Just some food for thought, Your diagnostics are spot on but the safety and liability need to be addressed here.
