  • Hey, it's NOT A CAR!
PHAD gets a service call to visit a construction site and diagnose a stalling problem on a Genie S-40 Boom Lift. I can't say "no" to something new and interesting...
So let's take a stab at it!
    Enjoy!
    Ivan

I find that if you can work & diagnose a vehicle, you can practically work on anything. I've jumped on tractor trailers, construction equipment, steam rollers, appliances etc and have been successful in repairs. Great video Ivan!

You sir or a very impressive mechanic. I spent the past three days troubleshooting this exact same problem. I was checking every sensor every switch everything. Final result was a bad alternator. I wish I would have seen this video three days ago!! You made it look too easy. !!! Lol

I work on this type of equipment quite often and I would say you did an excellent job Ivan. Common sense will carry you a long way. The most common failure I find is the oil pressure switch followed by the alternator, bad grounds and an occasional bad box.

Awesome video! Exact same symptoms on a Genie Z-45-25J (same Deutz diesel engine) in Belize where nobody knows how to work on these things and importing unnecessary parts is time consuming & costly (import duties are crazy!). This was very helpful for me, thanks!

good diag Ivan soon I saw the 10 volts new had to do something with this shut off, but without proper diagnostic as you did would need to confirm this without guess work, u were spot on ,thanks this is a keeper
even our cars trying to run with 10 volts computers will act up and hard starting or prolonged starting issue, in this case its a lockout system especially booms and tractors for safety reasons
    thanks

Good video. Thanks for showing and explaining the picoscope in your videos, I'm disabled and got out of the business about 10yrs ago and I miss keeping up with the newer technology, I still work on my own and friends vehicles when possible and your videos are helping me catch up. In a few months when I add a scope to my arsenal of tools I may have questions. In the meantime I have a problem with my knee, could you.. never mind. LOL Thanks for sharing all your knowledge

I had a clue when I saw the low voltage, and another when I saw the number 2 light.....I would still be flapping about though because I don't possess your diagnostic skills, nice work, Ivan!
Side-note....In the UK we don't have access to detailed schematics such as wiring diagrams, etc, as you do on your side of the atlantic,, we are all jealous of the support you receive from manufacturers and associated third parties.
    Thanks :)

Wow nice diagnosis Ivan. I was thinking you'd find no oil pressure signal voltage or no oil but an alternator tach signal is pretty sweet. Those deutzs are air cooled and the alt. belt turns the cooling fan. They're wired up like that so that if it does brake it won't cook the engine. Thanks for the great videos, keep up the good work!

Hey Ivan, the first and easiest thing you should do in this situation, and any time you work on an unknown piece of equipment is pull the oil dipstick and make sure there is oil in the engine.

Got a question for you, genie boom lift S40 1998 I think it was.Powered by a gasoline engine.Problem was that some times after the machine was warmed up good boom extended about half way, with about 300 pounds of weight in the basket when operator tried to boom up sometimes the boom would drop.Scary as all get out.We changed hydraulic oil, filters.Flushed the hydraulic system, checked all the hydraulic system operating pressures.Rep from vendor sent a man out,he could not find problem.Company that owned machine fine, got a new machine. What else do you think we should have checked?

ivan welcome to the world of genie. a lot of one off missfit crap cobbled together. not suprising at all that alternator is different. a lot of times when you get a part you get a kit to make the new part work or fit. always call them to order parts have the serial number and any numbers on the part you are replacing redily available. dont just order from the internet. those things have safety systems for the safety systems. then you have boom and ground controls. always check both . it may work one way not the other. also always check the level sensor bubble.if its off some things wont work or are working at a reduced rate. would love to see you troubleshoot a rotate circuit with the pico. you had the diesel. i pulled my hair out on a gas/lpg with the ford engine. good job though

You just get a like for the Diesel, i work 99% on Diesel and seeing diag aproaches on a start stall is pretty cool... but then you said eurotrash.... about a deutz.....
But also tell your neighbour that he is missing a panel that is over the injection valves area left of the alternator, with this on the air from the fan (around the alternator) gets directed over the engine block and helps to keep it cool. This engine has no water cooling and is only cooled by the oil and air.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  7 років тому +4

Oh please don't take that too seriously! It was just a joke. I have much more respect for this machine than any of the modern Audi/VW/Mercedes/BMW etc. that are just not built to last anymore, and cost a fortune to repair.
That metal panel we removed just to get to the back of the alternator to do the wiring checks. Interesting that this engine is air and oil cooled, I did not know that.
I really appreciate the honest feedback :)

So when you're up in the air, it shuts the engine off to prevent running battery down. That way you can bring it down with emergency battery power. If it stayed running, the fuel solenoid would kill that battery sticking you up in the air!

I am only at the 3 minute mark but these machines have an exciter wire on the alternator. The alternators on these things are crazy expensive too. If the machine doesnt get the signal from the alternator then it will die, like yours is.

I'm saying it's a low oil pressure condition which shuts the ignition down. I was wrong, as it happens. Win some, lose some. Sometimes you can't even get out of the game.
