  • Kalevi Kiviniemi plays "Zug zum Münster" (Elsa´s Procession to the Cathedral) from Lohengrin by Richard Wagner. This is recorded in Sibelius Hall, Lahti, Finland. Sibelius Hall is one of the finest concert halls in Finland. Hall is designed by architects Kimmo Lintula and Hannu Tikka of the firm Artto Palo Rossi Tikka Oy. It is the world's first concert hall constructed entirely of wood, only foundations and some other parts are made of concrete. Main hall has 1200 seats, and acclaimed acoustics is designed by master acoustician Russell Johnson. Sibelius Hall was inaugurated in March, 2000. It is home of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra.
Organ is a 52-stop concert hall organ by the Swedish organ builder Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri. It was inaugurated 3rd of May, 2007. This video celebrates the 5th anniversary of the organ. History of the organ is special: Pro Organo Pleno society, founded and lead by organist Erkki Krohn, raised the money for the organ. Basically organ represents French romantic tradition, but has special stops, f.ex. high pressure Tuba Mirabilis 8', Xylophon and Fågelsång (Nightingale).
As in all videos here, audio is taken from original high definition multi channel recording system, not from video camera´s built-in microphone or video camera´s audio system. The better your computer´s audio system is, the better the sound - of course within the limitations of UA-cam audio. If you have enough bandwidth and processor power, please enjoy also the 720p and 1080p versions, video and audio is better in HD. Video, audio, editing and description by Mika Koivusalo.

Actually, this is my favourite part from Lohengrin and listening this on an organ makes me bow down to the organist. Quite good transcription and stops are very well chosen 👍

Transcendent power. "Wagner did not begin a movement: he consummated it. He was the summit of the nineteenth century school of dramatic music in the same sense as Mozart was the summit (the word is Gounod's) of the eighteenth century school. " -GB Shaw

The celesta sound at 3:14 is cool. Is that one of the stops?

Hello Phillip: We played this piece in high school my senior year and our conductor told the high school audience that this was Elsa coming to the Cathedral and it was meant a grand occasion. Although this fellow did a far superior job than our high school band. I liked his soft ending. (1970 - Pittsburgh, PA)
