      "Lord" had nothing to do with anything. This is a Finnish score, having absolutely nothing to do with USA. All this has to do is national pride based on the overcoming from Russian rule.

    I am born Finnish, my kids are born Americans. I think of my Grand Parents who fought in the wars for freedom and independence against the Sovjet Union, my parents who yet as children were sent to the safety of Sweden during WWII. My grand parents were fortunate to survive the wars without too crippling wounds, when many paid the ultimate sacrifice. They were the generations who were faced with rebuilding, they contributed also to decades of prosperity after WWII. I consider myself as Finnish-American. And honored that the music of Finlandia has received lyrics as "Be Still My Soul!" 2017 is the centennial year when Finland celebrates 100 yrs of independence, after being a Grand Duchy of Russia for 108 yrs. Finland has many reasons to celebrate this year. Not forgetting that continued prosperity comes primarily through hard physical work building: infrastructure, homes, manufacturing, businesses... Not forgetting the sharing of prosperity, equality and justice to all.

      Suomi has a lot to teach us, of integration of indigenous peoples, of bravery in the winter war, of pure grit, her people showed ( Sisu ) , of excellence in education, of compassion for less fortunates, of beauty of language, of great moderation where radicalism threatens,

    I spent time in the beautiful country of Finland in 1998. You have to go out into the wilderness alone, into the silence, to understand this land. There is something "special" in this place.....incredibly special. If you are a perceptive kind of person, you may even be fortunate enough to absorb its ambience and take it away with you. By listening to the great Finnish composer Sibelius, it is evident he understood this land of a thousand lakes. Graham Daw, Yorkshire, England, UK.

    another one of my favourite hymns. i've sung the tune to many 10.10.10.10 words since i was a little boy. The words sung, and the place and the music all have great significance to me. I have just learnt today (3 sept 2017) that the uniting church in Lismore (where my mum is the organist; has been for about 20 years) which had their pipe organ ruined when the flood last March went over it, WILL NOT BE REPLACING/REPAIRING the pipe organ, but will instead get a Yamaha keyboard!! I used to sing in their choir , for which mum played, and when the rehearsal was finished, I'd ask mum to crank it right up and start with my favourite (Rockingham) while i moved around the church and sang "when i survey". There was nothing quite like it! The music wasn't just heard, it was FELT.
    Plymouth is a special place to me also, as my favorite translation of the bible is JND's, and my fav collection of Hymns "the little flock". Though the mighty have indeed fallen, the Plymouth Brethren in the 19th Century i believe was the last great revival God's holy church experienced and they captured in mind and heart the true character of Philadelphia.
    It is a true paradox that when the soul is most still is when the Holy Spirit of God can most quicken the believer individually, i reckon.

    Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
    Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
    Leave to thy God to order and provide;
    In every change, He faithful will remain.
    Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav’nly Friend
    Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
    Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
    To guide the future, as He has the past.
    Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
    All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
    Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
    His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.
    Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
    And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
    Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
    Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
    Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
    From His own fullness all He takes away.
    Be still, my soul: the hour is hast’ning on
    When we shall be forever with the Lord.
    When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
    Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
    Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
    All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
    Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise
    On earth, believing, to Thy Lord on high;
    Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,
    So shall He view thee with a well-pleased eye.
    Be still, my soul: the Sun of life divine
    Through passing clouds shall but more brightly shine.

    Tom Trenny, the organist in this recording, is one of the best in the world. What he does with this hymn is so touching and beautiful. Some might think it is difficult to follow. But, those who know First-Plymouth and its musical tradition know that with that choir and that congregation the organist can work all sorts of musical magic and no one will be confused. It's actually a patriotic song, not religious. Here are the lyrics translated by Keith Bosley:
    Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning
    The threat of night has now been driven away
    The skylark calls across the light of morning
    The blue of heaven lets it have its way
    And now the day the powers of night is scorning:
    Thy daylight dawns, O Finland of ours!
    Finland, arise, and raise towards the highest
    Thy head now crowned with mighty memory
    Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest
    That thou hast thrown off thy slavery
    Beneath oppression's yoke thou never liest
    Thy morning's come, O Finland of ours!

      As far as I know the text is a translation from the German song "Sei still, mein Herz" or "Stille, mein Wille" by Katharina von Schlegel (around 1750). The melody is from Jean Sibelius, who was Finnish.

      This is not a Christian hymn. This is a historically extremely important nationalistic song for Finland. These are the real Jean Sibelius approved lyrics:
      Oi Suomi, katso, sinun päiväs' koittaa
      Yön uhka karkoitettu on jo pois
      Ja aamun kiuru kirkkaudessa soittaa
      Kuin itse taivahan kansi sois'
      Yön vallat aamun valkeus jo voittaa
      Sun päiväs' koittaa, oi synnyinmaa
      Oi nouse, Suomi, nosta korkealle
      Pääs' seppelöimä suurten muistojen
      Oi nouse, Suomi, näytit maailmalle
      Sa että karkoitit orjuuden
      Ja ettet taipunut sa sorron alle
      On aamus' alkanut, synnyinmaa
      And here's a translation:
      Oh Finland, behold, your day is dawning
      The threat of night has been banished
      And the skylark of the morning in brightness sings
      As if the skies itself sang
      The light of morning defeats the dominions of night
      Your day is dawning, oh motherland
      Oh rise, Finland, lift up high
      Your head crowned with grand memories
      Oh rise, Finland, you showed the world
      That you banished slavery
      And that you did not bend under oppression
      Your morning has begun, motherland
      It is a symbol of Finland's struggle for independence under Russian (and before that Swedish) oppression. This is not about a Christian god.

    Hymn tune: FINLANDIA, from Jean Sibelius' (1865 - 1957) symphonic poem Finlandia. The text and melody are old, but Sibelius transformed them into his work Finlandia. So this is an old Christian , German hymn
    ,Text: Original German text ("Stille meine Wille, dein Jesus hilft siegen") written by Katharina von Schlegel (1697 - 1768) in 1752. Translated into English in 1855 by Jane Laurie Borthwick (1813 - 1897).Catharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel (22 October 1697 - after 1768 ) was a German hymn writer. Although little is known about her life, it is known that she lived in a Lutheran Damenstift (a residential endowment for unmarried Protestant women). This Damenstift was in Cöthen in the Principality of Anhalt.

    Here are the words to a hymn sung to this tune that I learned about 20 years ago from a small Cursillo booklet published, I believe, by the United Methodist Church.
    1 I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew
    He moved my soul to seek him, seeking me;
    It was not I that found, O Savior true;
    No, I was found, was found of thee.
    It was not I that found, O Savior true;
    No, I was found, was found, of thee.
    2 Thou didst reach forth thy hand and mine enfold;
    I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea;
    'Twas not so much that I on thee took hold,
    As thou, dear Lord, took hold on me.
    'Twas not so much that I on thee took hold,
    As thou, dear Lord, took hold on me.
    3 I find, I walk, I love; but, oh, the whole
    of love is but my answer, Lord, to thee!
    For thou wert long beforehand with my soul;
    Always, always thou lovedst me.
    For thou wert long beforehand with my soul;
    Always, always thou lovedst me.

    Not certain what the organist is trying to accomplish-this is being sung as a congregational hymn, not an anthem-difficult for them to follow.

    Here's lyrics using Finlandia from the Unitarian Universalist hymnal:
    This is my song, O God of all the nations,
    a song of peace for lands afar and mine;
    this is my home, the country where my heart is;
    here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine:
    but other hearts in other lands are beating
    with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.
    My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
    and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine;
    but other lands have sunlight too, and clover,
    and skies are everywhere as blue as mine:
    O hear my song, thou God of all the nations,
    a song of peace for their land and for mine.
    We sang this after 9/11.

    Although I appreciate the effort and tribute to Finnish art and culture, I cannot enjoy anything but the original chords (with the exact inversions) by Sibelius and the (possibly translated) lyrics by Koskenniemi.

    This melody is the national hymn of Finland and extremely significant to the Finnish people and our independence. As a Finn, I feel it's disrespectful to sing this as a Christian hymn. Imagine someone took one of your nation's most significant, if not the most significant, songs and turned it into something completely different. Pretty nasty.

      @@markjolley3768 Are you Finnish? Do you understand how significant this piece of music is to Finland? This piece is not about a god or religion, it is about Finland. Its name is Finlandia, it was composed for an event against Russian opression as the final part of performances about Finnish history. At the time of Sibelius composing it Finland was struggling under Russian opression and still finding its national identity when independence was but a distant and dangerous dream. The hymn part was later revorked into a standalone piece and its most famous lyrics were added to it in 1941 (other patriotic lyrics existed before). There is no doubt that Finlandia is one of the most significant pieces of music in Finland, it is equal to the national anthem. Significant number of people argue it should be the national anthem. It is possibly performed more than the national anthem on the Independence Day. It moves people to tears. Giving it another name and singing it as a Christian hymn completely removes it from its context, and ignores its history, story, and meaning to a nation.

      Thankyou for reply!!! I personally think it's a great tribute too put this beautiful tune too a hymn !!! As for the words they are so significant too current situation we are in.. as an organist I regularly get this requested at funerals!!! Just the words are comforting too anyone who mourns !!! If I was from ie.. Finland I would be very proud and honoured that one of its greatest composers was honoured and remembered this way!!! Easter Blessings!!

      @@markjolley3768 Your response just goes to show you did not take to heart anything I said, nor are you willing to even try to understand why someone would not agree with you. Finlandia is not a Christian hymn, and it was never meant to be so. I do not fault you for not understanding the Finnish history and how this song ties to it, but now you know a small part of it and can begin to have a better understanding.
