It was said that the moss was "blended up"; could you elaborate? Also is co2 being used during this process? I've seen some applications in hydroponics where it is added to the air of an enclosed system. Just curious. Thanks

Hi George I am getting some problem in dry start some plants are dying and some kind of white fungal is coming what is the reason I don't know and sometimes all very well
What a cool concept. I just recently set up my aquarium and have been battling nuisance algae and the Monte Carlo wanting to float. I’m going to try this out with a little 10g tank. Thank you
@@SaadKhan006 it turned out perfect. Spray it down at least once a day and keep covered. After a few weeks, it starts to spread and root. Hi, thanks for the video. By the way, do you need to mix liquid fertilizer on water for spraying ? and also, do you need to open up a small hole on the cover of the tank to let air get inside the tank?
George Farmer, hey body, I have flourite black sand soil and azoo soil, can you told me which of those two soils works better for MonteCarlo??? Greetings from Mexico city!!!
HI I know this video is months old now, but I am wondering if you put some liquid fertilizers on the spray bottle? or is it just a tap water? Hoping for your answer this will help me a lot. Thank you! :)
Was going to try this with dwarf hairgrass in a 60cm. Have grown loads of emersed plants in ADA Amazonia no problem, HC Cuba will even grow uncovered in good light with a few sprays, I have 3 Wabi Kusas with it in. Cuba is the best looking carpet imo as it’s so small and creates so much scale.
Would you only use carpet plants in this method at the beginning and add the more grass like plants later or can you put most of the plants in at the beginning thanks
Im trying my first dry start and my plants seem l healthy but some of my drift wood started growing a white mold. i boiled them again is there something i can do or just toss them before i flood ?
I bought seeds and drystarted, my tip is to use a "heavier" substrate. I used jbls manado its very "light" and as the plants got bigger they float up to the surface with the one lil ball of substrate they where holding on too. It took a few months but eventually they all float up, the plant gets bigger and becomes more boyent then the substrate i guess.

Very nice layout, the rocks look lovely. The DSM works for me. Last scape I laid individual stems of MC on the surface which worked well but I've yet to try the salt bay method lol. 12 hours of light is good I would not go less. You can leave a 10mm gap in the cling film for air circulation but the moss may dry out if you do this. Reason I left an air gap is I had a few problems with mold but that went a way with the air gap.
I've done the dry start method for a couple of smaller aquascapes with some success blending some Fissidens with water and a bit of greek yogurt. A carpet of Fissidens Nobilis is a sight to behold, but it takes a long time to grow. My biggest problem is the smell lol
i myself doing this with my 5ltr walstad jar, initially all my plants melted due to 4ppm ammonia but after reducing the water to 10% i planted some stem plants again and this time plants doing great taking co2 from air..spraying twice daily with fertilizer water and also ammonia got to 0 ppm ..so yea you can grow almost all aquatic plants apart from floating plants using this method

I’m 3 weeks into the dry start method of growing Monte Carlo and I’m getting some leaves going brown. Why is this happening? I’m allowing fresh air to enter tank for 5 mins and then misting then closing plastic film wrap over tank and leaving light on for 12 hours daily. Also using ADA Amazonia soil but not using CO2 system as yet.
Tank looks great! Such a simple setup but those rocks surrounded by Monte Carlo still looks amazing. I’m planning on doing the same for a 30L crystal shrimp nano cube setup with ADA Amazonia version 2 soil Aqua soil. Does it need to be lightly rinsed first or can it be poured straight into tank and does it need to be filled with water until just below the surface of the soil before spraying with mist daily? Also, since I’ll be using RO water, should I be misting with RO water or can I still use tap water?
I have seen almost the same method with Mike from Aquapose but the big difference what Jurijs is doing is just sprinkling the Monte Carlo. Adding the moss to the rocks is a great method. It certainly answers the questions of getting a good carpet. This method would certainly suit me. George, have you used this method or are you going to?
Any particular reason why Jurijs is using rainwater instead of filter water from aquarium water change/filter cleaning? I mean sure it's nutrient heavy but it's also filtered and seeds the soil with live bacteria. I'm currently in progress of converting some of my excess plants from submerged to emersed form and I'm using filter water to handle the transition. Kinda the opposite of what Jurijs is doing but you would expect plants to benefit from extra nutrients anyway. Good for potted plants too.
I think Jurijs likes to use RO with his own blend of minerals because he gets better results. Hopefully he will read this and explain more. Good luck with your project 👍
Whops. He said spring water and not rain water. Dunno where I got the rain part. I wonder if Jurijs has his own RO system or if he buys it bottled. I weighed the cost of RO unit vs getting bottled RO water vs just using tap water and I concluded that for mixing fertilizers I'll use sterile water from drugstore/pharmacy/whatever to avoid molding but tank water is pure tap. I mean we have very soft and nutrient poor water here out of tap so no reason to go for RO. Plus I don't even need to do anything to it since they don't use chlorine/chloramine to treat it. Also thanks! Some of them seem to be converting well. Rotalas are so and so but even some of them are converting despite the fact I keep them in an open box.
So this is not LDSM for lazyman...but an AC-DSM or AG-DSM or is that Canuck DSM. Looking forward to seeing how this pans out. Like the Riccardia trick also. Do you have the "ratio" of substrate:water to RC. "Painted on" with a brush?

Hey I have a question if someone would help me out. I’m new to freshwater aquariums but I have a 10 gallon and had a good amount of plants and a ph of 7.4. I had two shrimp a cherry shrimp and Japanese algae eater. They both seemed to roll over and die. Can you help me spot the issue
I'll be honest I never even lift the cling film to let the air in and never had mold issues. The mold issues will only show up if you wet the substrate too much. Which is exactly what people used to do in the early days of the dry start method. It needs to be wet, not flooded with water. You don't want to see water puddling in the substrate. My first dry start I even went on holidays to portugal for three weeks and when I came back the tank was ready for flooding. It's one of, if not the most healthy tank I ever grew. In the tank I even grew some stem plants with the dry start.
I have question. I am very concerned about climate change and the increase of greenhouse gases in the air. Can I just aerate my tank instead of injecting more C02? This is because during photosynthesis, there is more dissolved oxygen than carbon dioxide. So by aerating it, im stabilising the CO2 and O2 in the atmosphere with in the tank. Therefore, oxygen is released into the atmosphere and CO2 is introduced back into the tank. Like u said, this dry start method does not need CO2 because the air is always in equilibrium with the atmosphere. I hope you understand what I mean.
Interesting. I bet if I did that they'd all die :) I haven't got another tank to try it out. Wouldn't The Aquascaper Complete Liquid Plant Food in the spray bottle water give the Monte Carlo and moss an extra boost, or does the Tropica soil contain enough nutrients at this stage?
Great idea!! What happens after filling the tank with water? Changing from emersed to submerged condition how much that will effect the carpet? Will it melt by some percentage when it's adjusting? What will happen if I don't use co2 injection after dry start? Will it melt more? Can I do this Cheat with tissue culture plants?
Looking forward to seeing if this start up works. Was planning on using Monte Carlo, will try this method if you have success. I do prefer dry start, much easier to plant and grow from beginning.
it works all the time for me with monte carlo, and its not really great with hairgrass coz they grow slower using this method, since im kinda lazy too,so everytime i set up new iwagumi tank with monte or glosso, i always using this method.
Doubt: - the CO2 diffuser is already inside the tank - are you already releasing CO2 into that closed atmosphere, during the DSM weeks??? Can't tell without the water if the diffuser is "ON" or not. Thks
I started 2 mini DSM test projects at the beginning of January. I can share the video offline if you're interested. I used the DSM for the following 3 carpet plants: Eleocharis acicularis 'Mini', Sagittaria subulata, and UTRICULARIA GRAMINIFOLIA. The first two only needed 2-3 weeks of the DSM but the U. Graminifolia needed 8 weeks. The DSM is described by Diana Walstad and I'm surprised that you George did not know about it sooner since you are connected with her via Facebook. I'm guessing you haven't read her book. 🤤😮 I've got some other ideas/tests for the DSM and will hopefully try them out soon.
I know all about DSM and used it myself with one of my more well known Iwagumis about 5 years ago. This video was more about the technique of just sprinkling cuttings on top instead of planting into soil. I have Diana’s book. She signed it when I met her at the AGA 2015 convention where I was keynote speaker 👍

Yes George, it's for the professionals, not lazy...haha
😎😊
could you do this with cryptocoryne parva? very interesting method too start! i like!!!
Hi - no I wouldn’t use them for this 👍🏻
Doubt:
- the CO2 diffuser is already inside the tank
- are you already releasing CO2 into that closed atmosphere, during the DSM weeks???
Can't tell without the water if the diffuser is "ON" or not.
Thks
CO2 is off. It was just there from last time in use.
I started 2 mini DSM test projects at the beginning of January. I can share the video offline if you're interested.
I used the DSM for the following 3 carpet plants: Eleocharis acicularis 'Mini', Sagittaria subulata, and
UTRICULARIA GRAMINIFOLIA.
The first two only needed 2-3 weeks of the DSM but the U. Graminifolia needed 8 weeks.
The DSM is described by Diana Walstad and I'm surprised that you George did not know about it sooner since you are connected with her via Facebook. I'm guessing you haven't read her book. 🤤😮
I've got some other ideas/tests for the DSM and will hopefully try them out soon.
I know all about DSM and used it myself with one of my more well known Iwagumis about 5 years ago. This video was more about the technique of just sprinkling cuttings on top instead of planting into soil.
I have Diana’s book. She signed it when I met her at the AGA 2015 convention where I was keynote speaker 👍
doesnt really explain in any meaningful detail, why they grow faster like this.
He is so hot. Lol
Interesting
I have seen almost the same method with Mike from Aquapose but the big difference what Jurijs is doing is just sprinkling the Monte Carlo. Adding the moss to the rocks is a great method. It certainly answers the questions of getting a good carpet. This method would certainly suit me. George, have you used this method or are you going to?
You try to give the video more brightness it will be great if you do
