I'm a hobby photographer who mainly shoots men. And majority of the men I've worked with model for fun so they lack experience. I had to guide them all the time. Sometimes it was frustrating. Your videos would really help them if they watch them. Thanks for making these videos!
consider, perhaps, that your frustration is misplaced it is the photographer's job to direct the subject throughout the shoot, because the photographer understands the vision. should one be lucky enough to be able to work with a professional model, the directing will be minimal and the results plentiful. should one not be so lucky, however, one should be grateful of the fact that a friend or inexperienced model has allowed one, a hobby photographer, to use their face in order to create. one should self-educate in order to be able to better guide these subjects (watching videos like this one is a great way to do just that) sharing this with those subjects would be a great supplement to help them look and feel better during the shoots, but one should take the brunt of the responsibility upon one's self as the photographer, since the photographer (at least in my experience) has the greatest desire to create a good image i know that when i am in front of a camera i am clueless as to how to stand, what expressions to use, etc i try to extend sympathy to my subjects, especially the inexperienced ones, because i know how nerve-wrecking it can be on the other side of the lens
Exactly, for example the number one advice does not apply to me, my face is full of shitty scars, last thing I want is light hitting directly on my face cause it looks even worse
I've revisited this twice so I'll post the 8 tips for my future self (and maybe for other people who want to refresh this after watching the video): 1. Lighting: Stand in front of a window during the day to properly light all areas of your face a. Outside photos: Take them with the sun at your back, or in the shade 2. Grooming and Style (not much to say, I guess this depends on the person) 3. Posture: If you have broader shoulders, set your shoulders back. It's best to tilt your shoulders towards the camera at a 45-degree angle, keep your chin slightly down. Basically, mess around with posture until you find something good. 4. Facial expression: There are a lot of different expressions that can work, serious vs smiling, etc. Put a lot of focus on the eyes. 5. Editing: Use apps like afterlight or facetune but don't use too much, since it has to look natural. Mostly, you should use editing if it looks different on the phone then it does in real life. 6. Timing: If someone else is taking the picture, ask for them to count it down. Don't get startled or tired waiting for a photo. 7. Background: Choose a background that fits your style, like a corporate background if you're wearing a suit, etc. Sometimes you want an interesting background that shows your personality, so it doesn't look boring or fake. 8. Be Natural: Not a lot to say. Basically, act like you normally would, be casual, and don't try to force anything. Final tips: Take fewer selfies, try to include good scenes of the environment and photos with others. It'll make you look like you have a life (even if you don't, lol) and that's always a good thing. Take care and enjoy!
I'm not a model, but as a new photographer this video is super useful to see how the people on the other side of the camera think about these things! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Daniel, I don't watch fashion videos, and I am not a photographer or a model. However, I did a search yesterday on how to walk confidently and found your other video and now this video. There are a lot of helpful tips in your videos for men in general on how to groom and look confident, even if not for the purpose of modeling or selfies. And you come out as a very authentic and genuine person, with no drama; just plain, simple, highly useful, and to the point videos.

Just because you are attractive to most people, doesnt meant you have "good genetics" in general. You could still have poor genetics in other ways, such as bad health.
I'd like to say that I now realize top modeling is a very refined kind of "gesture and expression acting" and the very best, like you, make it LOOK easy. You're not just another pretty face. :) Thanks for tips, man.
What you're saying is absolutely true. When I modelled many years ago we all had to be chiseled in our appearance and we had to be very toned. The quarters of my time was spent keeping in shape. Now, as a photographer, I can see the other side of things. Great video, it's nice to see how the industry is today.

Interesting. I've been looking at moving into this area from working as an extra on films and came to realise how much I enjoy clothes and the art of wearing them. I'm 59, with receding long hair so not exactly the model stereotype but keep in good shape and have 'character' looks which gets me regular work on film, so I enjoyed your tips. As you say, being natural is the key. As an aside to those who freak out at losing their hair (it comes up a lot once you start looking at grooming tips), own it is the answer. My hair is fading from the front and my crown is beginning to head out but if you're feeling like you're losing your sex appeal, distraction is the answer. I dress very well in classic sixties period (heavier cloth generally which hangs better than modern equivalents) jackets/waistcoats with casual jeans and a mix of different shirts and I wear a lot of jewellery (European spelling) and it always brings me attention. There's something to be said for growing old disgracefully. Apologies, I went off topic a little there!
Sir, I am 39 and I love the way you think. You should have your own channel. I want to age with style, as well! I find it ridiculous how most of the population in the US sacrifice style for extra comfort. I live in a very touristy city and it's so common to see middle age men wearing cargo pants or worst, cargo shorts with socks and sandals. Being a tourist doesn't mean dress like you're about to fix your roof. Be comfortable but with style.
