Finally got my copy in the mail! Haven't played this game in a long long time. But your video actually got me wanting to play it again! I totally suggest trying the first alone innthe dark sometime. It's in steam cheap and it's got a good community controller layout
That was my first thought only a couple minutes into the video. It's not really copying Resident Evil if all of those features were in the original alone in the dark and then subsequently stolen by Resident Evil

@Xerxes20xx well re was the first to do so a couple years after alone in the dark came out and they basically took every single aspect from it and made their own thing. They denied it at the time but after the lead Dev left he admitted that there would not be any Resident Evil without alone in the dark l, as it was basically him saying, hey I can do this but better!
this game was the best of the franchise a lot of people hated it for being a resident evil rip off when it was not at all it was doing it's own thing and it is sad that people bash this game for no reason great job bro!
There was supposed to be a sequel to this game that would have had carnby going after lamb. There is a lot of story in this game but its hidden in books that flesh out what is going on in the background. The setting and presentation however, spot on, i dont think there was a better looking pre-rendered game until RE remake
I rented this in 2001 and loved it so much I bought it. It’s not as tightly put together as resident evil but I loved the lore of the island, the setting, the family history, the graphics, the light mechanic and especially the puzzles. It feels oddly short playing it again but then the two scenarios are quite different
10:10 i’m glad somebody else finally noticed that. I remember thinking that back when I had this on the Dreamcast. Double/Triple/quadruple barrel shotguns don’t work like that. You shoot as many times as there are barrels. When you have a double barrel shotgun, you don’t shoot two shots twice. You shoot one shot twice or both shots once.

There are a few things this game did better than Resident Evil. There are far more radio dialogue (even optional ones) between the two main characters, which was something RE2 lacked. The two campaigns have completely different puzzles for each character, and the second half of the game takes place in different locations for both Carnby and Aline, while RE2 did not. The atmosphere is more scary, misterious and unique than the scientific theme of RE. So while it has it's flaws, there are multiple ways in which this game shines and stands out compared to RE. I played it on PS1 first 20 years ago, but these days you can pick it up on both Steam and GOG, and it's worth it cause the PC version is far superior. It looks way better, has high frame rates, and you can play it on any resolution you want. Also no disc 2 switch, and low camera transition like on PS1.
This was a good video but you can definitely tell that he never played the original alone in the dark because he wouldn't be talking nearly as much about copying Resident Evil since all these things he's complaining about being a cookie cutter, alone in the dark did first

Excluding sports titles, this was the rare example of a game being on two different generations of consoles at the same time. Little did we know that this would be the norm decades later!
"Nobody is my father!" .. just think for a moment that someone wrote that, another person approved it, the voice actor actually said that, and someone on the dev team put it in. They had at least a minimum of 4 different occasions where someone could have said no, we will not put that sh** in.
Disingenuous to downplay the influence the original Alone in the Dark games had on Resident Evil (they did much more than influence the look), while declaring this a ripoff of Resident Evil. The original Alone in the Dark had the spooky mansion, zombies, limited inventory slots, puzzles, fixed camera angles, two characters to choose from, literature to read that provides background story, tank controls, secret underground hidden lair that houses even more evil, and on and on. If this game did “rip off” Resident Evil, it had every right to.
Amazing review. Loved and agreed with every second your analysis. You really should try the original Trilogy one day. They are dated by their "retro-ness" and not without lots of warts but they All of the pre-dated RE1 and really gave the world of 3D third person action and survival horror the playbook it used for years to come. Historical benchmarks if nothing else.
Technically, Capcom ripped off DreamWorks and Alone in the Dark game series because the original came out in 1992 long before the original RE game. Also, all modern horror games today took a page out of the original Alone in the Dark with the note reading, inventory page, and basic fight mechanics thar is relevant in every game from then to today.
I remember playing the PS1 version and really wanting to watch the film....I still haven't watched said film but every review that exists would imply it's a good thing I never did
I'd recommend trying the next attempt at restarting the series - Alone in the Dark: Inferno. Some great ideas, some bizarre ideas, a gorgeous soundtrack and a kinda annoying ending. Make sure it's the playstation version, they improved it including major bug fixes. Also contains some very 'of the era' ideas but overall more interesting than A New Nightmare. Then you'll be all ready for the _new_ attempt at a reboot currently in development.
definitely try inferno on the PS3. It's a "weird" experience but it has some seriously good parts in it. Its like an all you can eat buffet with every cuisine in the world on offer, messy, non-sensical, but with a lot of heart.
Its hilarious how much people compare two games over a camera. Might as well say cod and 007 are the same just because the camera isnt fixed and they both use guns
I want to see you do the martian gothic review, one of the key reasons the game was hard as hell was due to the game developers forgetting some of the clues to puzzles, the game was meant to be point and click but they changed it to be more like resident evil to try and cash in on the horror aspect, me and a few others managed to get access to the PC game files and found tons of cut items, audio and textures that where never used from the PC game, it ended up in bargain bin sales for £10 due to full 3D games becoming much more popular, I have the extracted files on my google drive so anyone can access them.
I remember this getting quite heavily panned on its original release for not being very true to the original -- and I can see that, because it's got absolutely naff all to do with the original aside from having a protagonist with the same name. But it actually looks a lot more competent than I expected, taking heavy cues from Resident Evil, as you say. The original Alone in the Dark is definitely worth a play. There's a lot less combat in it than in Resident Evil, playing up the "adventure game" feel, and a genuinely unsettling atmosphere throughout. It's a lot more Lovecraftian, too, rather than "omg zombies and monsters" -- although both are present. It's pretty clunky by modern standards and there are a lot of opportunities for instant death, but if you can get on board with its old school design and feel, it's a classic with good reason. Its two direct sequels... I'm not actually sure, as I've never played them myself, but there are people who both love and hate them!
Not a bad game, not a great one. It doesn't feel as fleshed out as it perhaps should, and the gameplay has a vibe of being artificially lengthened with bullet sponge enemies early on, and the slog that was the dark world endgame. Also, the PS2 version: what were they smoking when they did this port? As far as I can tell it uses the higher res art like the Dreamcast and PC versions, but then renders the game at 240p which is unusual for the PS2 and pixelated as hell.

I get the "rip off RE" thing, But not this game series, RE ripped it off. Listen, I like both games, but Alone was first and RE used a LOT of its game play and ideas. I enjoyed this entry in the Alone series.

Well, it's not copying RE. It's a better version of the first AitD AitD was there first, you know. Resident Evil is a clone of Alone... It's the same case as Tomb Raider inspiring Uncharted inspiring Tomb Raider reboot.
Even though I highly disagree with a lot of your videos, I still subbed because of the unique perspectives you have. This game is conflicting for me. It's absolutely gorgeous on Dreamcast (while looking decent on PS1), but it has a lot of the faults you mentioned that can't be denied. The triple barrel thing is 100% right and it should have an alt fire gimmick to it.
The whole concept of a "rip-off" has always been a strange word to me. The only way it could be a true "ripoff" is if it came out on the day after Resident Evil, and actively stole sales from it. The game came out several years after RE so it seems more like a tribute to me. Like when people call something a ripoff I always ask "why is more of a good thing bad? They will retort, you could just go play RE instead. Yes I think I will go play the game that I have beat upwards of 20 times, know the story and script by heart. Why would I want to play a game with similar controls, but a much different story and characters of a game I love? This was a great review, just my thoughts (earlier points aren't addressed to you, they are just hypotheticals of game reviews in large)
Eh, hold up. All the things you've listed that AitD: TNN ripped off Resident Evil for, are all things that Alone in the Dark pioneered and has done with it's first game. The first game had an option between two protagonists, a man and a woman, with different perspectives and endings. The first game had dogs running around a mansion (if you could make out the dog model...) and the first game had tons of puzzles and, surprisingly, some platform elements that not even Resident Evil had. TNN just took the elements of the first Alone in the Dark game and remixed it a little. If anything, Resident Evil 1-3 have all been rip-offs of Alone in the Dark...granted the Resident Evil series perfected and did those things WAY better than Alone in the Dark ever did.
Alone in the Dark my butt! I played Aline and the first room you climb into from the roof has a person in it! And how am I meant to be scared when they give me a grenade launcher with 50 rounds? Had a blast though and was laughing at everything you're pointing out. I swear Carnby murdered that pilot in cold blood. Cheers to the next one, hopefully its more enjoyable for ya.

for completions sake yes, for personal enjoyment sake, no,. it is the better of the 2 campaigns but that's not really a high bar to pass and you won't get a better overall experience from it.
Ahh this video aged like milk cuz actually Resident Evil is the clone the original Alone In The Dark came out in 1992, 4 years before Resident Evil and they took inspiration from another game called Sweet Home that came out in 1989 Capcom admitted it themselves

Yeah I do :) That was my point, how Resident Evil was inspired by Alone in the Dark, but New Nightmare feels more like a Resident Evil rip-off rather than a reboot of it's own franchise.

8:34 No, It just means the gun has two barrels. Three are two and three barreled revolvers. They chambers are just more numerous in the cylinder.

Yeah I do :) That was my point, how Resident Evil was inspired by Alone in the Dark, but New Nightmare feels more like a Resident Evil rip-off rather than a reboot of it's own franchise.
