- For today's review we're looking at The Thing game, developed for the PS2, PC, and Xbox in 2002 by Computer Artworks, which serves as a sequel to the 1982 John Carpenter horror classic, but is it any good?

Why in the name of God and all things holy have they not made a sequel for this yet!! 😫
I would love to play this on PlayStation 4 Pro or 5!😍
Remaster
The Thing will be getting a remaster by Nightdive Studios. The remaster is scheduled to be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S in late 2024. There will be trophy support for PlayStation and achievements for Xbox and Steam players.
I was wondering when it was coming out. I just found out about this.
Found this at my local retro game store about a year ago. Almost fucking screamed because I'd been looking for it a while by then. Priced at $60 but didnt care. Picked it up along with a copy of Manhunt 1 for my PS2.
THis game still reminds me of splinter cell, or old etal gear solid, just the looks of it, MAN I love the oldies. I need to play more retro games.
There's a certain charm to the look of older games that just isn't there anymore, especially with horror games, everything looks to clean and high definition to be scary nowadays. But yeah, I'd definitely recommend having some retro games handy to shake things up :) Although I'd actually say Bloodstained is kinda retro with it basically being castlevania.
Watched this whole review last night and forgot to leave a comment as I was going to bed. Your reviews are super well worded, also you review some super cool titles!
s'all good my dude! glad you're enjoying them :)
Im glad this game is finally getting a remake. Hope its good
What a great review. I truly appreciate the work you put into these especially the knowledge of the lore surrounding your subject
This game was way ahead of its time and they just didn't have the time or Tech to refine the Mechanics and just couldn't make them work as well as they could have. I would love to see a game like this today
I love the first half of the game when your exploring the interesting base and working together with your teammates and have plenty of story and horror atmosphere but i hate the second half of the game when your in that undeground area.
During the second half of the game its not as much about horror as before and its more about blasting enemies in boring environments and there is almost no story at all until you get to the final boss and the game becomes extremely hard.
I just got done playing the game today and I agree with pretty much everything you said. Overall I actually like the game and see myself returning to it in maybe 5 years or so. But, there are a ton of things to rag on…
Despite already going in with the expectation that it’ll be clunky, I found myself getting frustrated with certain points and sometimes used a guide. The game manual made it sound like the trust/fear was going to be significant somehow, but it hardly was after the first few levels. Imagine if we had to be more tactical instead of just going ’pew-pew! Shoot the bad things!’. Many sections were more reminiscent of Half-Life (with an RE plot) which was a huge shame because the first few levels actually felt uniquely cool and spooky, IMO.
I think the game would’ve benefitted from being shorter and instead of having the generic evil corporation plot, instead let us just go through one of the nearest outposts that the Thing managed to reach.
My last comment got cut in half somehow so it made no sense. You can tell that this game was ahead of its time and that's why they couldn't make the Mechanics Work exactly like they wanted. I would have loved to see a version of this today where they could make all of this work together flawlessly
Lol
This was one of my favorites mostly for the game mechanics and atmosphere, you dont see much use of the trust system. My only gripe was the scripted mutations meaning later playthroughs you can just strip away their guns before they transform, overall it ruined the unpredictability of how the creature operates. This needs a modern port or fan remaster at least to give this more recognition.
Well I’ll be!!!
I just found out there is a remaster of this. But not a "copy and paste" remaster. The trailer shows new types of monsters.. or "THINGS"!
I watched the thing for the first time in 2023 and wow what an amaxing film. I then picked up this game and would highly recommend it. Especially if you liked the film (who doesn't) my only complaint is it can be infuriatingly difficult.
Very much enjoyed your review and over all commentary delivery. It was nice to take a look over this again
You're a way better gamer than me. This game whooped my ass.
You know what’s funny, and also unpopular opinion.
Pace is my favorite character, he’s like literally me in a nutshell when playing a horror game (except saying “WE GOT SOME COMPANY!!!”)
I enjoyed this game... but never finished. I got stuck at the C4 on the cargo plane level. The "trust" mechanic was clever but poorly implemented, as the transformations were scripted, and you could just give people a gun from the loads you have and they trusted you.
Lovely vid!
Some suggestions when it comes to console games, specifically from the sixth generation...
The X-Files: Resist or Serve
Extermination
Red Faction
Shadow of Memories/Destiny
Deus Ex
Cold Winter
Cold Fear
Area 51
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Second Sight
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds
Ghosthunter
the only games I'm missing from that list are x files and cold winter :) shadow of memories will be getting a review later this year :)
i saw the movie, played the game and cant remember any of it....am i beeing spoilered watching this review?
1:15 - very much so!
Night Dive is remastering this game!!!
I just saw the news, so excited!
Love the movie so much, but not played this game, mate said it before but love how you do your videos
Thank you :) Glad you're enjoying the videos!
The essay style suits me more because I'm no good at live commentary or engaging with an audience in the same way you can. I wish I could do what you do, then I'd probably be able to make more than 1 video every 2 weeks haha
this game made me think for years that there was a thing remake around 2002 rather than just a random game release
no unfortunately there was a sequel that was a prequel that was a pretty much a remake in 2011 :/
@@Vakantscull oh yeah i've seen that, i was genuinely confused....technically set before but....extremely similar story
Getting a remake or remaster
we're getting a remaster by Nightdive and I can't wait!
where can i buy it these days ?
ebay, or if you're in the uk it goes fairly cheap at CEX
'spoilers, yo' was actual dialogue in John Carpenter's movie....fact
XD
McGreedy? Alive and well? *mind blown*
i really enjoyed this game
i remember it being pretty bloody hard , aha i couldn't finish it .
I never watched the Thing but damn that's made of nightmares!
I think we’ve got some company
😤😤😤
I actually haven't watched it but my partner really wants me to so I really need to get around to it at some point XD . Never realised there was a game for it, looks awesome :D . Is it weird of me to say that you have such a relaxing voice to listen to? XD
Absolutely watch it, one of the last great practical effect body horror films! and thanks, I've never been told that before and I have that problem like most people where I find it really weird listening to my own voice recorded haha :P
