@@cynthiashearer2026 yes still have my Focus SE. But there might well be a known “ issue “ with auto transmission. I once belonged to FB group of Focus owners and seemed there were some who said this. I’ve not experienced any problems myself at 100 K miles. You might want to look into it.

You know looking at the ride height, im impressed at how low the focus rides. Not much tire gap between the tires and the fenders. Gotta say, it looks pretty good!
I bought a 2015 a couple years ago. Loved the way it drove. Loved the flexibility of the hatchback. Hated when the transmission went out and I had to pay $2000 to get it fixed. Sold it right after I got it back from the dealer.
Get one with manual transmission, and it feels like a sports car. Quiet at high speeds, decent MPG. Takes corners well, even in the basic trim with 195 tires.
I've got mine about 5 months ago and I love it! It's a 1.5L 150HP automatic. Got it used for $17'000 (which is great since at that price point your only other option is a used Kia Picanto - car prices are astronomical where I live). Gas mileage is not bad, but not the best either. There is some slippage on hard acceleration also. The auto transmission is supposed to be a traditional auto, not the troublesome PowerShift (the 'f' is silent). The car looks very cool, the engine sounds lovely, yet gives enough power for a daily driver. It is small and I imagine it becoming increasingly impractical as my family grows.
And how is it now ? Still no problems ? I just got one used 57,000 miles . So far here , heard motor mounts needed to be replaced and clutch with auto transmission has known " issues " ?
This car is great, and very practical. Just one word of caution for anyone buying this used, Don't get the auto. If fuel efficiency is a concern for you then get one with the 1.0 liter. I've heard concerning things about the transmission (also the dealership in my city has horrible customer service). So I was thinking of going to Mazda but I really like the look of the focus. Have current owners of the 2016 focus had any issues?
+purplechickon Ford changed the transmission to a regular 6 speed automatic(no more dual clutch) from 2015. I had a 2015 rental and it shifted smoothly. I like the Mazda3, it's reliability is better according to Consumer Reports but I also like that Focus are cheaper and have more rebates.
+purplechickon I own a 2013 sedan SE with the auto trans. For the price it is an amazing car. The trans had minor issues, but had a free software update at my last service(which btw is under $40 for each visit!). It really improved the drive. I do drive this car basically like a hybrid, but since new the overall mpg is 36.8 @ 30,000 miles. In Northern Cal, it is a joy on mountain roads, and comfortable up front. Excellent handling for this price . No reliability issues at all. I've owned Audis and VW's plagued by mechanical issues, and high cost of ownership, and this car is more fun to drive overall. I may get a 2016, as the deals are awesome.
Your review is on point, I love my 2012 Focus 5 speed but that left arm rest is ROUGH and my kid's car seat barely fits in the back. Other than that, great car, awesome build quality in and out. The same year mazda3 looks like a rental car, the new ones of course are a lot nicer.
I hate when car reviews complain about size. This is the exact reason why cars like the Focus and Honda Civic and many others have BALLOONED in size to midsize cars levels.
not to nit pick but the focus is one of the smallest entries in the class but I do understand that the civic is basically a mid size sedan and not a compact
So the US sticks with the powershift auto? Australian spec models have reverted back to a conventional automatic because of the poor reliability of the powershift. Thought this was across the board.
My mom owns a 2017 Ford Focus SEL with the 160HP 2.0L GDI engine. I know the Sedan we own has the select shift automatic 6 speed. We got the sel in white. Ours is fully loaded except the cold weather package and also has voice activated navigation. The engine is very powerful compared to the class that has non turbo engines. I like the sound of the engine when you push it past 4500 rpm it sounds sportier and feels nicer. It’s lower to the ground compared to my 2010 Toyota Camry. I know the whole transmission shit and I don’t need a lecture on the focus so don’t bash me and give me B.S. we have 20,000 miles on it and the transmission is perfectly fine and the software and the programming was updated for the 2015 or 2016 and newer.
Bobby Johnson don’t worry I got bashed for talking about my Toyota Camry. Saying it’s boring and that it’s a Japanese car. I don’t care what people say. I love my Camry and we love our focus. That’s all that matters is that people should appreciate what they have rather than what they complain and expect something more out of it.
one of the most concerns . i hope that push start button don't become on all cars or to remain optional nothing like having your key on you . just Imagine the electric or software corrupt the system how would that works for you?!! it will cost a lot of this $$$$ for a replacement or reprogramming another expenses wasn't there few years ago !!!
***** it is likely to break .. the fact it did happened to cars owners i know .. that thing cost $250 for a software reprogramming . you get in your car push button .. guess what surprise .. it won't start even that the owner had two of them either one wont start the car .. it was a hassle . some of them they got manual key in case battery run out of energy so you can open the door !! why bother if that .. maybe we should have both then . in the end it is a new device that make you pay a lot of money as a consumer. and i don't trust. now just so you know the dealer only can get things back regarding this matter. a mechanic can tel you why the car wont start but can't get it to start at least for now .. we all know that dealer means a lot of this $$$
+Zachary Moon I agree with you . but still that wireless remote needs battery to keep operating. just like regular remote control . when sometime you push the button. and wont unlock the door. the next thing using the basic regular key. problem solved.
I take the hatchback; the sedan trunk feels thin & cheap. However the driving dynamics are great; better than a Corolla, Elantra or Civic. The electric is an interesting proposition as it is cheaper than the gas models after incentives.
Has the dual clutch automated tranny improved? I had a '12 and the dual clutch auto was awful. I traded it in less than a year. Everything else I loved. But that trans was so jerky and made for a stressful drive home everyday in stop and go.
Strongly considering a 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT - GLS + Tech Package. I've been offered $5500 reduction.. cheaper than the Elantra Sedan... but what scares me is it's not even mentioned in this video as a comparable.. I've never owned a Hyundai before and a bit worried about quality but $$ value with all you get is nuts. I've priced out a focus Titanium with sunroof etc and GT Gls and the price difference is shocking to me.. its just over the 5k it's being reduced. Should I make the jump to Hyundai? Someone please help.
Got my missus a Sep16 1.5 Ecoboost Aus-Spec 'Sport-'S' Plus' Focus... it's a frikkin GEM!!! Haven't put it through the hard-courses yet, but it's got the ST suspension, low-aero bodykit, sunroof, Sony 11 speaker surround, adaptive cruise, crash avoidance sensor, proximity sensors... it's kinda hard to pick what it 'doesnt' have 🤔 $200k cars hardly have the kit this car has, and alot couldn't match it on the track either! AU$35k is a great deal for everyday use 👍
Yeah I have a 2014 with 19,000 miles after the TCM being updated twice it decided to break down on the highway and the screen said "transmission overheating" and lost power. It needs a new clutch but they won't give me a loaner so I'm stuck with it. Thank God it's a lease that's up in a year!!
you get what you pay for got a S model focus for 13,700 its the 5 speed manual they gave me a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty its fun to drive and happy with it you can only get 4 colors in my trim level no cruse and just bare bone hence the low price hey it has its good point they out weigh the bad wanted a hatch back wanted cruse wanted a metal flake blue color but thats more money i didnt want to buy used also had a 2003 SE 5 speed with the split port engine people say is bad but it has 180,000 miles its been a good car!!
David Lyday There is no SE model new with a 5 speed only the S base model like i have. GOOD NEWS FOR YOU LAST YEAR ON BLACK FRIDAY THE FOCUS S 5 SPEED MANUAL WAS SELLING FOR 12.000 DOLLARS US. So this year maybe a repeat ? Anyway have 40.000 miles on mine no problems so far would buy another. I got a 2016 sion tc can say i dont like it as much as the focus . The focus is 40 plus MPG highway and fun to drive the insurance on the tc is a killer mpg is 30 highway door window glass is thin on the sion and the door locks open when you close the door on the tc .. Dont like the push button start as i thought i would... Something interesting if you divide the car weight by the horsepower the focus and the tc come out about the same!
Hala Heleu The 2017 model year does not offer a manual transmission in any trim level other then the base S model with the 5 speed unless you get the Ecoboost 3 cylinder with the 6 speed however for the previous model years 2012-2016 they offered the manual transmission in other trims. Two weeks ago I actually got a 2015 Focus SE hatchback with the 201A sports package
David Lyday , yes and the manual 6 speed with a one liter engine is not as good as the 2 liter engine from what i understand has a small turbo and a life time timing belt not a chain. I have seen ones for sale of the SE model as you say . Would not see a reason to buy one they are not as powerful or that much better on fuel as the 2 liter focus . I have my doubt on the 1 liter durability .
I really hate hearing go with a Mazda 3. Have you owned one is the question? I have an 06 Mazda 3 2.3l and it has been the worst in terms of quality and reliability. It will run fine one day then it won't crank the next day. The engine mounts are constantly braking had to get custom mounts to solve the problem and it's the worst car I have owned gets maybe 280 miles to a tank. So when I hear these reviews telling people to go for the Mazda I'm like have you owned one? Are the Mazda 3's fun to drive yes, however the reliability and quality factor not so much. Now considering the 2006 Mazda 3 was co-built with Ford parts could explain a lot actually however before owning one I thought Mazda's were awesome cars from now own I will never own another one due to the experience I have had.
Nice review. I think it is time kbb started cautioning about the radiation risk associated with Japanese imports. That also rules out the competition. And remember Japanese cars "built" in US are actually "assembled", not built. Radiation to factory workers and dealership staff. No one is talking about it. One word Fukushima.
Have had two for rentals, and have hated both (coming from a fusion owner that is not happy with his fusion for a reliability issue). They are unrefined, the dual clutch auto is a joke, unless you want less than seamless shifts, the ride is choppy at best (harsh the rest of the time), and still inexcusably loud. The only thing it has for it in my book, is that it's peppy... I had a 2015 mustang rental, that rode and drove better.
They went a little downhill in terms of exterior styling IMO. The front grille almost looks out of place, as it seems to be a little on the small side. The previous version had more personality.
I have a Titanium, DO NOT GET THIS CAR! Unless you buy a truck or SUV, Ford does not care about you. The auto transmission is absolutely horrendous in this car, so bad that they had to put an extended warranty on it because it has so many complaints, when I went to get it fixed they told me it was normal. Shuddering, winding, cracking. It honestly sounds scary. Everywhere I try to trade it in is giving me dirt compared to what I paid for it, there is still a 10,000 dollar gap that I owe than what they're going to give me. Customer service is horrible at every dealership I've gone to and there's no loaner cars. The options list stole me away from Volvo but oh my goodness I wish I never fell for it. My car has every single option but it doesn't outweigh the bad. Look up the negative reviews for this car on google if you're still thinking about it, I'm not the only one.
I'm not knocking the Focus Micah, but in a world where every other competitor is more comfortable and offers more interior space and visibility and not to mention knee room because I rented one while my car was being fixed and the Chevy Cruze was a much better car and most people do not care about race car handling. So, with that said who buys this car? true FORD lovers? And like you pointed out the tiny screen even. I would take the 2016 Elantra over this. Great Review and thanks for being Honest!
I am very displeased with my base version sentra it has NOTHING usefull, the usb port only supports apply products but I have 3 android phones, it does not have bluetooth streaming even though it has bluetooth calling, no back up camera, xm, touch screen or nav and most annoying of all no way to open the trunk from the outside unless you have the key and hold the button ( there is no key hole on the trunk or button to press like the ones that have push button start, those cars have a button on the trunk to press and it will open ) but I guess its not that bad considering my sisters base version versa is missing the same things as mine minus the trunk thing and she does not even have power door locks or windows and her alarm is a joke and none of her headrest move it looks so cheap too bad at the end of the loan the cheap thing will cost over 32k dang high finance rate.
+Will Bar This is so silly, why did you buy it if you do not like it? And why complain about the base model? Obviously it's not going to have as many features. If it has nothing useful, get another car or be grateful you have one at all.
na, im gonna get the nissian frontier latter this year and keep this car, turns out since I got it its pretty fun to drive with its stick shift and its pretty roomy on the inside, I may still trad it in latter on for a higher end model that still has a stick shift, but as we speak I still aspire to own the kia optima or kia soul or nissan frontier but I have come to accept the car I bought just because I now have more money to spend and I am not gonna waist it on another car that I do not need and since this one is doing all right ill keep it till something goes bad or I get a big chunk of money to get what I want.

Wow a car that has the shifter as still standard? Most of the guys at my job cant even move to a driver position due to the fact they have no clue how to shift gears! lol I am guessing the Auto will be what is sold 90% of the time.
Anyone else HATE the restyling of the focus!? I can't stand the front fascia and grill, its so ugly. I prefer the 2014s. Oh well they are due for an entire REFRESH for 2017 anyways... And the new ones look SIIIIK!
I hate those huge consoles on the new cars. They serve no purpose, and they hit my knee. Ford seems to have the worst, or possibly the Mazda. I can't imagine why every brand is doing this. It's extremely annoying. Make a damn split bench seat for Christ's sake.
I have a 2015 Ford focus. I love everything about this car except that piece of shit Dual clutch transmission. It’s the worst transmission ever invented. Ford should ban the engineer who designed it.
This is a low point for Kelly Blue Book. If you do not like the Focus, why review it? The reviewer obviously is biased towards the Mazda 3. Mazda is fine but the Focus has good points also and is a top seller, tied with VW in Europe. And, likely or not liking the looks is a matter of personal taste. Not everyone like the Mazda.
+jack in Vancouver Um don't know what you were watching, but I heard a generally positive review of the Focus. He mentions the Mazda 3 twice, at the start, which is obviously his own personal view, and later on within listing other competitors. Hardly biased. And regardless if there was any dislike of a vehicle, KBB is a consumer advice channel which people use to make a decision on what car suits them so they don't review based on what they want to, but based on what's new and what consumers can look for.
+gde1989 The Mazda 3 has some problems. It is not the first choice for all. Mainly it is noisy. That is pointed out by Consumers Report.Stop and look at one on the street. It is a very small car. I do not think any cars in this segment are good. They cost almost the same as mid-size cars which deliver much more for the money, and have larger interiors, and approximately the same fuel economy.
+jack in Vancouver While the Mazda 3 may be noisier than the Focus, it isn't that noisy. And that's what the radio is for anyway. It is, however, more reliable than the Focus, and has somewhat livelier handling. Both are good choices, though.
Totally agree I own a 2006 Mazda 3 2.3l and I hate it the worst car I have ever drove and owned. It has been nothing but problem noisy and parts constantly breaking and the paint quality sucks and rust on the rear taillights which is not cool. Looking to get the Focus in replacement of my Mazda because I wanted a hatchback but can't afford a GTI.
Don't buy it you will be. Very unhappy. The worst cars from 2010 to 2017 y did they ruin a good car. We had 3 old ones gave one to our kid he put on over 240k miles with miner prob the new cars are no good thanks to the new gear box they call a six speed automatic resale its worry nothing

+David Lyday True. Small is good though as its a compact. I finally saw the new Civic in detail and it's the size of a 2000 Accord sedan.
I own a ford focus trend hatchback 1.5 litre turbo 2016 model and all I can say is the car is absolutely brilliant especially in auto
So the US sticks with the powershift auto? Australian spec models have reverted back to a conventional automatic because of the poor reliability of the powershift. Thought this was across the board.
Be careful of the DCT im renting a 2016 Hatch se and its awesome just the DCT needs work my advice get 6
speed
I totally agree people just treat car manufacturers like football teams instead of giving credit to other car manufacturers.
The Focus has a simple, pleasing style, making the Honda Civic appear overwrought (just like that word)!
True I thought the same about Honda civic hatchback
one of the most concerns . i hope that push start button don't become on all cars or to remain optional nothing like having your key on you . just Imagine the electric or software corrupt the system how would that works for you?!! it will cost a lot of this $$$$ for a replacement or reprogramming another expenses wasn't there few years ago !!!
@@East17A you act like a key ignition doesn't break, I've replaced many in my life
So are you going to film the video for the scion ia, cousin of the Mazda 2?
I take the hatchback; the sedan trunk feels thin & cheap. However the driving dynamics are great; better than a Corolla, Elantra or Civic. The electric is an interesting proposition as it is cheaper than the gas models after incentives.
Was some of this filmed in long beach?
New 2018 hatchbacks are selling for 10k. Should I buy it?
Has the dual clutch automated tranny improved? I had a '12 and the dual clutch auto was awful. I traded it in less than a year. Everything else I loved. But that trans was so jerky and made for a stressful drive home everyday in stop and go.
+Jerome H No, not at all. A lady I work with has a brand new 2015 after the refresh and she's taken it in twice to get it fixed.
Cre8tive81 What did you end up going with?
Funny that Kia and Hyundai were not mentioned in amongst the comp...
Got my missus a Sep16 1.5 Ecoboost Aus-Spec 'Sport-'S' Plus' Focus... it's a frikkin GEM!!! Haven't put it through the hard-courses yet, but it's got the ST suspension, low-aero bodykit, sunroof, Sony 11 speaker surround, adaptive cruise, crash avoidance sensor, proximity sensors... it's kinda hard to pick what it 'doesnt' have 🤔
$200k cars hardly have the kit this car has, and alot couldn't match it on the track either! AU$35k is a great deal for everyday use 👍
Stay away from the 6 speed auto. The dual clutch is horrible.
+ZL1Gimpelson That was fixed 2 years ago.
Slash396 I work at a dealer still see them come in with shuttering.
ZL1Gimpelson
Interesting...I work at a dealership too and I haven't noticed it on the newer models.
Some of the higher milage ones. They all start off great and then start getting clunky.
Yeah I have a 2014 with 19,000 miles after the TCM being updated twice it decided to break down on the highway and the screen said "transmission overheating" and lost power. It needs a new clutch but they won't give me a loaner so I'm stuck with it. Thank God it's a lease that's up in a year!!
sedan or hatchback??? which one is better
Bought this car and I love it
2016 Chevy Silverado video review?
you get what you pay for got a S model focus for 13,700 its the 5 speed manual they gave me a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty its fun to drive and happy with it you can only get 4 colors in my trim level no cruse and just bare bone hence the low price hey it has its good point they out weigh the bad wanted a hatch back wanted cruse wanted a metal flake blue color but thats more money i didnt want to buy used also had a 2003 SE 5 speed with the split port engine people say is bad but it has 180,000 miles its been a good car!!
Hala Heleu I really want a 2015 hatchback SE with the 5 speed manual but they're hard to find. how has your car treated you sense you posted?
David Lyday Hope your happy with your focus purchase! I sure am happy with mine seems to be a great car .
Wasn’t the 1.5 EB an option?
Thank you for this review!
I will drive a Ford for ever #myford
Focus RS?
2018 Ford Focus SLE Review Please!!!
is it only manual???
Mine gets 45 mpg on the highway at 70mph, just did a 1200 mile trip
3:28 My 1983 Volkswagen Beetle has those, just saying :p
Thank you for excellent information
This looks like a great car!
No mention of the new Chevy Cruze which would be a strong competitor
Sorry but the Chevy Cruze is horrendous as hell my sister just brought a 2011 model wish me luck please
Rwd, fwd, or awd ?
The Ford Focus is a front-wheel-drive vehicle. Only the high-performance Focus RS includes an AWD drivetrain.
Unless Focus is sold in the US with lead wheels and wooden seats you can't possibly choose a Mazda 3 over It.
You forgot hyundai elantra with its upgraded suspension and tweaked engine to give 28 mph on city and 38 on hwy plus it looks better than focus
Which one is that one???
dualclutch on the focus and fiesta really bad get a manual better or just get some thing else hate my 2014 focus trading it real soon.
Good luck!
This what my first car!!
Go to the chevy Cruze it’s cheaper and more fun to drive plus doesn’t have a class action lawsuit on transmission
I like my jetta. The trunk houses many breeds of wild animal.
The Cruze we rented had NO rear leg room but I liked it too ! Lol cuz I wasn't the one in the back seat :)
The Ford Focus car it's fun amazing fast looks great for American cars ford really came p with good cars lately I have Ford Fusion Lessing I love t and I won't mind getting Ford Focus st next time love this powerful fun cars Mazda 3 it's good but I like Focus little better
Id take any ford over any mazda
I'd rather be driving on the road than on the side of the road.
Me too
Then why a Ford?
I've had two fords before and no problems, now i have a mazda 6, it looks good and drives well but it's cheaply made, ive had too many problems with it.
+Boss Status LOL
Tremendous car just tremendous.
Unreliable
why does the auto get 4mpg better on the highway? did ford just fuck up the ratios on the manual to make everybody want the auto instead?
What about the Dodge Dart?
Slamming your knee off the dash like a weirdo...
that front end looks like some of a aston martin
That's what I thought the first time I saw the new fusion.
Wow a car that has the shifter as still standard? Most of the guys at my job cant even move to a driver position due to the fact they have no clue how to shift gears! lol I am guessing the Auto will be what is sold 90% of the time.
Acc0rd79 m .l l .
Anyone else HATE the restyling of the focus!? I can't stand the front fascia and grill, its so ugly. I prefer the 2014s. Oh well they are due for an entire REFRESH for 2017 anyways... And the new ones look SIIIIK!
Greg A. I love it. Mine is all white with the sport package and those chrome and black wheels. It's nice
Soooooo basically don't get the Ford Focus? Gotcha!
Nice car 👍
Tops list of most unreliable cars
So cool car
I hate those huge consoles on the new cars. They serve no purpose, and they hit my knee. Ford seems to have the worst, or possibly the Mazda. I can't imagine why every brand is doing this. It's extremely annoying. Make a damn split bench seat for Christ's sake.
I have a 2015 Ford focus. I love everything about this car except that piece of shit Dual clutch transmission. It’s the worst transmission ever invented. Ford should ban the engineer who designed it.
I hear the car isn't as reliable. I prefer the Mazda
I think it's because of the dct. The manuals should be solid
Them lower body panel skirts or whatever you Ford calls it are just hideous.
Economy cars with body kits...cringe, what is this the 80s
You were around in the 80's and use the word cringe smh
They forgot the Dodge Dart :(
and chevy cruze.
Yeah! What's up with that?
Kbb is bias towards dodge.
+Ansr Max they're being discontinued
+bendsomemetal Ford not for another 2 year however. They might even stay if FCA finds a buyer! Doubt it though.
The transmission is garbage and half the times my backup camera won’t work. I’m done with ford vehicles
I bought a new Ford Taurus and it was pure junk. I will never buy another junky Ford vehicle and you shouldn't either.
N2LADIES55 I have Ford Fusion 2017 it's really good car 🤔
i think the older ford taurus were better or the ford sho idk about the new ones...
Altima
Don't buy it you will be. Very unhappy. The worst cars from 2010 to 2017 y did they ruin a good car. We had 3 old ones gave one to our kid he put on over 240k miles with miner prob the new cars are no good thanks to the new gear box they call a six speed automatic resale its worry nothing
How big do you need a backup camera on a small ass hatchback anyway?
Go for 6 speed manual!
Autos SUCK
looks like a rental car
