I just got my 16' Focus SE 2.0L and I absolutely love it! I love how you actually feel how fast you are going, unlike a lot of cars out there. Mine has the Leather Seats and the Moon Roof. I am 6'5 and I can fit in the front seat comfortably, shocking for the size of the car. Mine also is White with the Black Wheels. I average about 29MPG combined but I am a lead foot. I totally recommend this as a good first car for most people!!
What, A video on a sunday? It's impressive that they can get 120 Hp from a 1.0 3 cylinder, and 9 seconds to 60 isn't bad when you consider it is a 5 door with a food blender engine. I'm lucky to get my car to 60 sub 10 seconds even with bang shifting it. Having a manual would help the fun factor though, Nice review as always matt!
Hey Matt, as far as I am aware, the 1.0L ecoboost comes with a conventional automatic, not the dual clutch. Perhaps worth a look into that. Good video though!
The reason the transmission isn't clicking, slipping and jerking is that it's a standard automatic transmission called the 6F 15. It's a standard torque converter transmission.
The transmission doesn't act like a DCT because it's not a DCT. It's a 6F15, a light duty version of the conventional auto transaxle used in various FWD Fords, and GMs as the 6T-series.
This motor won Best International Motor beating out EVERY other manufacturer out there. Nobody else has done that I think. It has alot of innovation incorporated into it. I loved it when I owned it.
As much as I like Ecoboost motors, I still think the 2.0 Duratec GDI is the way to go. Yes it is getting old but 160hp in a car this small still feels quick. Honestly the Focus is one of the more fun compacts you can buy, and unlike most rivals it still has a proper 6spd gearbox without resorting to a CVT.
Aftermarket support for these is really good too, I have a 2017 1.0l eco boost but mines the manual transmission and I’ve gotten some upgrades for the engine and cosmetics. Car actually goes pretty fast with the right upgrades!!!
I completely agree with what you say about the engine. I have a 2018 Ford Focus SE, that I got very recently but drive enough to know how it is, and it really isn't the quickest car but it's nice and peppy and tears through curves where it shines, not on straightaways at all. It's a better daily and long distance car to save money on gas. Of course if I want speed (not the quickest of course, which you've reviewed) is driving my 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT or 2011 Kawasaki Versys KLE 650 motorcycle. Once again, a great review man.
honestly this car is not bad at all. all these people in the comments have nothing but negative shit to say (just like any other UA-cam video) but fuck man I think Ford actually did something revolutionary with this engine. it runs great, saves a shit load of gas, has leather seats, neon lighting throughout the car, amplifier and subwoofer along with it. it does not even compare to the fiesta and the hatchback version looks like a shitty minivan so I think the sedan looks great. mad haters on this shit that can't appreciate good things when they see it
To comment on your mention of the stuttering of older Focuses, the 1.0L EcoBoost models actually use the traditional planetary gear automatic transmission as opposed to the dual clutch automatic that has been used in all recent models.
It goes brilliantly in a Fiesta and is very smooth, revs well and has a wide powerband. It's a great little motor to use in the Fiesta. and has won several awards. I have driven a Focus 1.0 T 125 hire car in Germany and I did not find it underpowered at alI. It cruised at 90-100mph on the 'bahn no problem. It's all relative. to say that this car would not appeal to enthusiasts is crap. It is not all about acceleration. This car has a great chassis, responsive steering and that makes it a delight on twisty roads. Maintaining momentum is half the fun. It's not a Subaru WRX or Mustang and not meant to be.
I hope to get one of these as my first car some time soon lol. I love the Focus body style and interior but the deal breaker is the DCT that comes with the 2.0. I don't need something fast, I need something that's got great MPG, will keep me safe, and might be a little fun to drive with the good suspension and steering.
Get a 2017 or 2018 ford c max hybrid they are made well plus you get reliability, lots of room. 188 Hp , great mpg, it has a E cvt transmission...is like the Toyota E cvt has no belts or gears ...they are reliable . Or get a 17,18 focus with a 5 speed manual transmission. They are a good runner plus you can put on a better aftermarket sway bar ,strut and shock braces ..and it will improve the handling by a lot. .will still get about 40 mpg highway too.
The best part is that if you get a bit wider and sticker tires, you can drive this car hard and not get a ticket. Same thing with something like a Toyota 86. It's not the fastest car, but you really don't need all that power with great handling.
So this doesn't have the DPS6 transmission... the Ecoboost 1.0s get the 6F15, which is a regular shifting automatic, so I sure hope it'll never get a clutch shudder lol.
It is, drove one. it's a bit so so off the line but when you get rolling it's nice, it sounds almost like a inline 6. Plus it is nice to have the 6spd manual (unlike VW). Only real pain I can see with these cars now would be the timing belt, done for that extra level of silence from the engine.
The timing belt is "expected" to last the lifetime of the engine, with an inspection recommended at 150,000 miles. Given that the belt is inside and immersed in oil, I would probably not get mine checked if I hear that other people are not having any issues.
So, let's turn on to this backroad here and see how it does... *pushes pedal down* *nothing happens* 😂😂😂 i feel like this car would be scary to drive among other traffic because it's so slow.
Vikk 54 Defensive driving style states you should rarely need to use speed, to get you out of a tricky situation. Try to anticipate the road and traffic ahead.
Well yeah, but if you need to make some crazy move like cutting over two lanes to pass people and going right back over to get off at an exit right away, you can't quite do that in this. Not that you should 😜 and not that I do that of course.
Vikk 54 I agree though. I personally once almost got into a head on collision, because I misjudged downshifting just one gear instead of two gears to make a manouver. It's an econobox and it takes no prisoners...
Kevin De Smet Right. I just could never drive anything with a 0-60 over 7 seconds. Test drove a Chevy Spark once and hated every second. I felt like I had to apologize everytime I accelerated from a stoplight
Vikk 54 0-60 isn't always the best metric, 0-40 and enough torque low down the rpm range are equally important. That's why diesels can pull quite strong despite relatively slow 0-60 time
the transmission slipping problems still happen on the 2.0 model because it has the 6 speed powershit automatic, this model does not do it because it uses a normal 6 speed auto
I have a 2018 Ford focus se 1.0L. And its THE SLOWEST THING I HAVE EVER DROVE! It has 123hp and I feel like if i put my feet through the floorboard and move it myself and can go faster.
I have the fiesta with this engine, but with a 5 speed manual transmission. i think the engine is perfect for the 2500 pound fiesta, great handling car with insane gas mileage(I avg 40mpg). I have done few mods to mine, and the car sounds great with aftermarket exhaust and very different than anything else on the road. I really enjoy the car,not gonna lie I wish I would got a ST alot of days. but I really enjoy driving my car, and I don't regret it. no way id want the focus with this engine and even worse with a automatic.
I have a '15 1.0 SE Sedan 6-speed. With an engine this small, you NEED the 6-speed. I got the car for an economical daily driver so i could park my MS3 and stop using premium fuel. Getting 34 MPG on PA back roads and 42 MPG on longer highway road trips, and can go more than 400 miles on less than $30 in gas. Mine came with a leather wrapped wheel, although I got the cold weather package. As Matt said, it handles decent. Now the downfalls: Car had a squeaky shifter when I bought it (fixed by the dealer). Headliner rattled like crazy, and was further destroyed by the dealer when they took 9 days to "fix it". (see my channel for examples) It no longer rattles, but the headliner material is now starting to detach from around the sunroof opening. Car had paint blotches on the rear fender (fixed by the dealer). The rear seat bottom cushion has to be TOTALLY removed in order to fold the seats flat. Rear trunk lid will not stay open when the car is parked uphill (I've smacked my head into the latch numerous times). Trunk opening is tiny and I could not fit a push mower in the trunk (i know, should have bought the hatch). Fog light bulbs are already burnt out (car has 20,000 miles) and low beam headlights are just bad. The power windows are SLOWWW. Car has also depreciated to less than half of it's original sticker price after less than two years. Would I buy it again? No. Should have stuck with my gut , paid a bit more and gone with the Crosstrek. My only consolation is that if gas prices continue to climb, I'm one of the more efficient vehicles on the road.
In reply to djkenny (sorry, posted under the wrong account) I think mid to upper 40 mpgs may be possible, but above 50, i doubt unless if you're doing some serious drafting behind semis etc. The road trips I've taken this car on have all been doing 70-75 on I-79, I-64 and I-77 down through West Virginia. Lots of elevations changes
I was thinking about getting a 2013 Focus Hatch for a nice daily along side my NA Miata just because how comfortable they are from what I remember from having them as rentals
Most of the other models you refer to also lack the luxury features on the lower trims. You really should compare this to the lower trims of those models to be fair.
I would say that as someone who has bought a focus with the 1.0 ecoboost that it’s not a disappointment I went from a 2006 focus 1.8 that had 123bhp that in winter wouldn’t get more than 29mpg has road tax of £260 a year and spent around £20 a week on fuel. I now own a 2012 1.0 ecoboost 123bhp with a 6 speed manual currently it’s returning 39.4mpg the road tax is £30 a year and I only pay £10-13 in fuel a week my car is the Titanium X and the insurance is cheaper. I would say that my drive to work is only 8 miles so I would get better mpg if I drive longer distance
I love the newer focus. I don’t give a shit what people say about the transmissions. The 2015 and newer models look so much nicer and newer if you get one like this example or an SEL or titanium. We own a 2017 Ford Focus SEL in Oxford and it’s fully loaded with all the technology for $22,445.00 has everything but heated seats, leather steering wheel, and heated steering wheel. The steering wheel looks so much better than any other ford product I’ve seen. We put 21,000 miles and bought it new at 18 miles back in December of 2017 and it’s September of 2017 and going on to it’s 5th oil change sooner or later and we have the maintenance plan from ford that takes care of everything. I could care Less what other people say about this car but they know this has more power non turbo for a 2.0L GDI 160hp which is faster and better than a Elantra Sentra forte, and etc... off the line. We have the Sedan variant and I have plenty of 0-60 videos on that car and small reviews on my focus. It has the 6 speed select shift transmission automatic. I also own a 2010 Toyota Camry LE with the 2.5L 6A and it’s gets to 60 in 8 seconds and I have a 0-60 on that car too.
People need to thank these types of cars, they are the reason why Ford can still sell High hp v8s .. Even if they sell very little of these focus model
I own this car and I have had it for over 6 months. Now it's definitely not the fastest car in the world but if you drive in sport mode it's pretty quick. I've pulled away faster than v8 Camaros, true story. While driving on the highway at 70 mph I can usually get anywhere from 50-60 mpg it costs me $20 to fill up. It can also fit 10 scuba tanks, 4 BCD (like a super super thick vest), weights, masks, fins, and 4 people comfortably. And the Bluetooth is crazy good. I've also raced my friends 2016 Honda civic and my car was faster and cheaper. I bought it for $15,000.
I drove the 6MT , I think ford should go with a twin scroll turbo in this application... because not only do you lack the engine displacement but you have a tiny turbo you're waiting on to spool up to make minuscule amounts of power. I don't think it needs more power, because that would negate the fuel economy intentions . But it does need more responsiveness (ie: different gearing in low gears (6mt ) and the twin scroll. Similar to the Cruze eco which retains the stock gearing yet 6th is a serious overdrive gear. I see the potential in the motor and think it's super cool we have a 1.0L turbo in the Big Mac capital of the world.
Matt, when you make the shirts for your channel I hope there's one for the padded armrests, it would be so insider to the channel! Speaking of those shirts I will be amongst the first to step up and get one and will wear it with pride, right along with my Smoking Tire, Regular Car Reviews (soon to get) and my 18 Blipshift shirts =======
Ok so is the transmission a typical automatic or is it a different version of the shudder box found in with the 2.0 motor Can I get a 2.0 without the twin clutch? Ford please give us a manual with the 2.0 or put the fiesta ST drivetrain in the line up for the focus SE
kurt roepke They didnt put it in Mondeo, The reason was it didnt prove to be effective as Ford thought, So Ford is going to put it in Fords 2019 Mondeo which will have a global Ford D chassis instead of the CD4 platform its now in, The new D chassis will be significantly lighter than the current one by nearly 300-350 lb or 140-170 kg lighter, The state if tune too might change to 140 PS and 170 NM . The transmission will be a 6 speed MT, This is to make a company car, where COX taxes are super high for cars with higher displacement engines,... The new emission norms say downsizong isnt much necessary, so Ford might even switch to a 1.2l i3 in Mondeo which will make 140 PS and 200 NM or 146 ft pounds.
My experience has been to beware of American made small engines. However, I always love large American made engines. Maybe I never got over that Vega and Pinto experience. LOL
hey I need counseling. I am trying to buy a 2003 Mazda Miata Shinsen Edition right now. 1.8 engine 5MT. the car is a 1 owner and it has 81k miles. the asking price at the dealer is 8k. is that a good deal or no? Have in mind I don't have all the cash to pay upfront and all the Miatas around my area are pretty beat up and they still ask a pretty penny for them. This will be my 2nd car as I will keep my current Dodge neon as a daily and have the Miata for fun. Thought, opinions and suggestions?
Eduardo Boquin The price seems to be at market value from a dealer Ed. It depends on what you're wanting as a sunday driver. I personally bought a '91 Miata with 55k on it this summer so I know exactly what you're going through haha (I also kept my daily but it's an '03 Vibe). If you aren't going to keep the car garaged I'm not sure I would buy a convertible. Perhaps an inexpensive motorcycle would be the way to go for cheap sunny day fun.
epicSLAGATHOR Thanks for your response. Yeah I checked to see the market and the car is reasonably priced. it will be kept in a garage, the weather in California is actually really good for the Miata, not a whole lot of rain here. I wouldn't really want a bike, LA drivers are the worst. I think I'm actually going to go for it, I'll test drive it tomorrow so we'll see.
Eduardo Boquin You're going to love it. I can't explain what is so special about a small rwd roadster but it's my favorite car ever. I can't sing enough praise for the mechanical feel and connectedness. BTW you're gonna love 2nd gear in turns. Miatas love to get sideways, even stock.
As tiny as that engine is why do they not offer it with a manual transmission? At least I hear this has a different automatic than the other Focus models that is more reliable.
What mods? Because one of the most powerful NA focuses in our group on Facebook only made 212 at the crank and it was heavily modded. No one else has reached those numbers.
This car Ford Focus 2016 SE is a Gladiator with the same spirit like the Volkswagen 1988 Fox GL 4doors ,i hope Volkswagen bring back Volkswagen Fox 1988 but in 2020 🤗❤
its decent, my android phone hooked up to it with no problems and Pandora runs great on it. My only complaint is there is no XM radio on the factory radio. It has a 6 speaker system that can bump a little for an economy factory installed speakers. It has nice steering wheel audio/phone controls...even better than my 2010 Impala steering wheel controls. I just don't understand why there is no XM radio option.
cvt kills the civic for me.. no touchscreen kills this model of the focus for me, because it's the only model you can get without the PowerSh!t transmission. so i'm looking into the Jetta.
His face when he realizes the car is not taking off when he steps on the gas😂😂
Exactly
I just got my 16' Focus SE 2.0L and I absolutely love it! I love how you actually feel how fast you are going, unlike a lot of cars out there. Mine has the Leather Seats and the Moon Roof. I am 6'5 and I can fit in the front seat comfortably, shocking for the size of the car. Mine also is White with the Black Wheels. I average about 29MPG combined but I am a lead foot. I totally recommend this as a good first car for most people!!
how do you feel about it now?
Thanks so much for bringing back the old intro!
YES!!!!!! I have been waiting so long for this review!!!! This made my day!!
whenever a car is awkwardly slow he starts bobbing his head lol
FINALLY, THIS INTRO IS BACK
This color combination makes this car look so good, best red I've seen in a while.
Ethan Gee not very impressive when it's turbocharged.
Jimmy Joji true. Kinda forgot that little turd is 1 liter. Crazy. Disregard my last comment 😂
Thanks 1.0 ecoboost makes 140hp not 120...
Hey Matt, as far as I am aware, the 1.0L ecoboost comes with a conventional automatic, not the dual clutch. Perhaps worth a look into that. Good video though!

I completely agree with what you say about the engine. I would get this car. It looks nice. The car I have now is 155HP. I don’t really do any freeway driving. And that’s my favorite color to see on a car!
I just bought one. Gonna see how things are.
Comparing my 2016 SE Focus to my old 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup, it’s absolutely night and day better
DaToyGamer Do you like your Focus?
oh man that intro is so much better! (:

This would probly be a fun stick tho

@ 6:47 that was hilariously bad but what do you expect with a freaking 1.0L engine.
Nice to see the older intro back on. I liked that one.
I prefer this Intro

i think europe gets a dct with it.
Good to see the old intro back
ahhhhhhhh yessss finally you brought back the old intro
This was the best acceleration reaction. LOL
COOL Review: 2016 Ford Focus SE 1.0L EcoBoost
Maybe if it were an ST! This thing is so small...I think it would fit in the bed of my Rebel!! Nice vid.
the transmission slipping problems still happen on the 2.0 model because it has the 6 speed powershit automatic, this model does not do it because it uses a normal 6 speed auto

I have the 2.0 N.A. in my 2015 and I tested this 1.0 it’s clearly lacking

you should review the new mazda3 with the 2.5
Nice back to the old intro like it more!
Finally!! Your proper intro!
Someone's been at the Gym! keep up the good work Matt

Is it cheaper to make smaller displacement engines and just slap turbos on them?
is the "s" mode just like baja mode in the 2017 ford raptor?
Is this a good car? Or have the same transmission problems of the 2.0 version
HEY SUBARU Do you remember the geo metros? they had the 1.0 3 cyl engine in them back in the 80's!! 50mpg!!
People need to thank these types of cars, they are the reason why Ford can still sell High hp v8s .. Even if they sell very little of these focus model
Damn.. my mountain dew is 2 liters 😂
Mando Morales mountain dew is good shit. :D
The Old intro is back!
I bought it for $15,000.
okay, may be a dumb question to y'all but is it a good idea to trade in a Lexus 2007 LS460 for a Hyundai Equis?
Ok so is the transmission a typical automatic or is it a different version of the shudder box found in with the 2.0 motor
Can I get a 2.0 without the twin clutch?
Ford please give us a manual with the 2.0 or put the fiesta ST drivetrain in the line up for the focus SE
Shaun Flatt yes,a 5 speed
yes!
old intro is back
so where are they gonna put this motor in next? Fusion? Escape?
pedro fernandez f150
This motor will come in next gen Fiesta ST in 180 HP tune in addition to Focus and Fiesta and C Max and B Max and Ecosport
This one fits in a suitcase, the next smaller one will fit in a backpack, I suppose?
they put this in the fusion/mondeo in Europe to slow.
kurt roepke
They didnt put it in Mondeo,
The reason was it didnt prove to be effective as Ford thought,
So Ford is going to put it in Fords 2019 Mondeo which will have a global Ford D chassis instead of the CD4 platform its now in,
The new D chassis will be significantly lighter than the current one by nearly 300-350 lb or 140-170 kg lighter,
The state if tune too might change to 140 PS and 170 NM . The transmission will be a 6 speed MT,
This is to make a company car, where COX taxes are super high for cars with higher displacement engines,...
The new emission norms say downsizong isnt much necessary, so Ford might even switch to a 1.2l i3 in Mondeo which will make 140 PS and 200 NM or 146 ft pounds.
Hey matt , could you please review the ford focus rs
Mo Lo he has done so already, just search has channel and you should be able to find it
My experience has been to beware of American made small engines. However, I always love large American made engines. Maybe I never got over that Vega and Pinto experience. LOL
displayfireworks1 the engine is made in Germany
good thing this engine is German.
Wow in the uk we don't have the sedan style focus we only have the hatchback
hey I need counseling.
Eduardo Boquin too much $ but a good car
As tiny as that engine is why do they not offer it with a manual transmission? At least I hear this has a different automatic than the other Focus models that is more reliable.
My wife's 2012 titanium get's 215hp.. what happened over the year's?
The mr. greenback show! if your talking about a focus that isn't possible. in 2012 the only motor available was the 2.0L it only made 160hp.
+2014 Mk3 forgot to mention it's got mods.. my bad.
What mods? Because one of the most powerful NA focuses in our group on Facebook only made 212 at the crank and it was heavily modded. No one else has reached those numbers.
Could you do a review on the BMW M240i thanks!
Great engine. Love my 1.0 Fiesta.
Nice you add your old intro 👌🏼
Can you do a reveiw of the 2016 civic rs turbo sedan...pls...pls...pls....
This car Ford Focus 2016 SE is a Gladiator with the same spirit like the Volkswagen 1988 Fox GL 4doors ,i hope Volkswagen bring back Volkswagen Fox 1988 but in 2020 🤗❤
can you do a review of a 03 cobra terminator
That whole intro man, he had to do it to em
How’s the sound system lol. I’m getting an se with a 6 speed manual
its decent, my android phone hooked up to it with no problems and Pandora runs great on it.
Great review as always, Matt. Btw, love the original opening.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 Your reaction at the lack of power.....lol. can't stop laughing
You should review the civic or mazda 3 too
Dang my old Celica has a 2.2 liter, a big block 4 cylinder compared to today haha.
I don't understand. I have a 2014 focus se, and it still looks newer than this.
1.4 tsi Jetta please!!!
Are you going to stick with the old intro? Please do!!!
I think the Civic beats this, more power and better fuel economy all from an I4 as opposed to the I3 in this Focus
Agreed. Civic is miles ahead in pretty much every aspect.
iMiguelAOG my civic 2003. beats this. period
cvt kills the civic for me.. no touchscreen kills this model of the focus for me, because it's the only model you can get without the PowerSh!t transmission. so i'm looking into the Jetta.
iMiguelAOG it's not the only motor. The 2.0L that's available stock for stock will beat a civic every time.
can u review the 2017 acura mdx
Geez. He can't get anything he wants...
Matt head bob coaxing it to go faster followed by comment about how slow it is in 3...2...1.... :D
I have a 2018 ecoboost love it
let's turn on to this back road here and see how it does.
I've never seen the sedan version as we don't get it in the uk.. so weird looking...
The 1.0L has a torque converter automatic not the dual clutch.
That reaction when you stamp on the accelerator and it has no oomph...
Someone needs to put ST badges on that for laughs
ever getting an exotic anytime soon ? Like An Aventador or Ferrari 488 GTB? Well if you can't the new civic type r would be cool to haha
