Wow! that's crazy impressive! Really cool to see more people of color doing Leadville. I did it way back in 2006 and didn't really see any black or brown people. Having barely finished under 12, I know how truly great that ride was. Hmm, well if I ever do it again, I'll definitely sign up for TR!

Great podcast. What an incredible story. Tried to find David on Strava to follow and give direct kudos but this will have to suffice!

Now that is some dedication to commit to such a high volume for your first time getting serious about cycling, any repetitive strain injuries? Was anything done to prevent those injuries in such a rapid ramp up?

The best place to chat with Sergio is over on the forum post that corresponds to this interview. You can find that thread here :)

Definitely reaching on the race talk. You guys don’t need to save the world in each podcast. It’s such a turn off. I don’t come to trainer road to listen about a brown guy ride. I come to listen to hear about this bad ass race and his experience in it, a race I would like to do one day.
While we’re at it, you know what would help making cycling more inclusive? Being nicer to ppl who walk into bike shops. The elitist cycling culture here in austin TX is intimidating. Doesn’t matter what color you are. Ppl who are assholes at bike shops (customers and employees) turn ppl off to cycling.
I’m a Mexican guy who loves to ride and listen to these podcasts. The white savior/guilt bs is a real turnoff for me. Just Be nice to ppl and welcoming, stop judging riders by what color their skin is. That will bring more ppl of all races/religions/genders to cycling.

I'm in Austin also, and I'd echo your comments on cycling having broader inclusion issues beyond race. Road cycling in particular seems to attract some really odd elitist attitudes that turn people away regardless of age, race, sex, etc.. Ironically, it seems more prevalent with the average racer/rider while many of the elite riders I know are pretty open and welcoming. While I applaud trainerroad's efforts to help drive change on the race front, I think they are pressing a bit on these interviews. This video was a great cycling/training story about David and his leadville journey. It was interesting to me (as a white guy) to hear a little about David's perspective on race and cycling, but I felt Jonathon was pushing the race angle a bit much. All good intentions, I think we all want a more inclusive cycling community across race, sex, age, etc.

Couldn’t agree more, the white guilt stuff that Jonathan and Nate seem set on is a complete turnoff. There is a real confusion on topics of race where lack of homogenisation in representation is taken to be discrimination. I just TR would focus on quality cycling content. It does a disservice to their guests to focus on race since they must inevitably question if they’re only invited into the series as part of some misguided affirmative action drive rather than for their achievements or stories in their own right. Treating your guests as a colour rather than as individuals is itself racist.
