Neil Gaiman has said that Coraline was the most interesting book he's written because children perceive it as adventure but adults perceive it as horror. It's truly incredible.
That's so interesting. I assume it's cause most children have a lot of mental flexibility and few fails in life so they may think everything will work out for them in the end, there's always a "happy ending", therefore they take more risks, they might feel less fear, more excitement plus the novelty. Also they probably put themselves in Coraline's place and can really empathize, while I feel like adults put themselves in an "adult" perspective of responsibility and objective reality. A believe deep doen many kids would've liked getting rid of their parents for a short while. Adults may see this and be terrified of the idea because their relationship with their parents are usually opposite now, they probably miss them and want their safety net back., etc. Idk I'm rambling now
I think this film is really important for children. The original Grimm stories are also much darker, but only so children learn something.When you consider how many children are abducted, abused and killed, these stories are worth their weight in gold.
This was the go to movie the substitute teacher would throw on in highschool. I'm glad I wasn't the only one horrified and confused while not being able to look away.
As a grown woman, I do see Coralines Prents in a very different light. 1st, the mom has a brace on her neck and even mentiones an accident, 2nd, they have just moved to a place quite a ways a away it seems and 3rd the parents seem to be really stressed about this dead line. This, to me paints a picture of: Mom had an accident, the medical bills are piling up, maybe they had to move to a cheaper place, because while this house is big, it is also old and seemingly at the ass end of nowhere. They really, really have to meet this deadline because if they don't get cash flwing in soon, they'll be in real trouble. Notice how the mom said no to the Gloves that had a clear Pricetag and then bought them for Coraline after they got the Catalogue out? It screames "We are tight on money right now and it is eating us alive and we don't want to tell her kid and alarm her" to me Also, the fact that when she was in real trouble, Coraline did not hesistae to look for her parents to help her and ven made the simulacrums out of Pillows suggests to me that, while they surely have her ups and downs, Coralines parents love her and she _does_ feel loved and secure with them, just not always heard

Also, it's easy to miss at first, because Coraline is a child and doesn't notice these things, but Coraline's parents are under huge financial stress: Mom is wearing a neck brace, implying some sort of physical injury and therefore medical/insurance burdens. That's why they tip poorly, put off buying real food and the non-essential things Coraline wants, and they're so fixated on finishing their freelance work project so they can get paid. Coraline just knows that her parents don't have any time for her and they're curt with her, so she's unhappy with them, making her a perfect target for the Other Mother.

The whole movie is stop motion and everything in it is intentional, it’s worth watching over and over to see all the little details that went into making it; like the doll opening scene the tools the Other Mother used are old mortician tools, and the doll was Ms.Loback’s sister before being made into Coraline, there is also a book which is a lot darker
Genuinely a creepy movie - not just for kids. Not scary but not pleasant. Watching your face as the movie goes on and gets more twisted was very entertaining lol I still have the DVD that came with the 3D glasses from when it first came out. Glad you enjoyed this one even with its darker themes :)
I’m always excited to see how people react to this movie. One of my favorites. Saw it for the first time in theaters when I was 16. It freaked me out pretty bad at moments…at 16 years old! But now at 30, I love coming back to it every year. Still freaky, but I don’t jump anymore haha

This is my favorite movie and has been for years! The amount of details and secrets throughout the film are crazy! It would probably take an entire day to completely dissect the whole movie and it’s theories. They have a museum in Seattle (for all of Laika films) and I’m genuinely so upset I live on the opposite side of the country.

This movie was based on a book by Neil Gaiman (You may know him from "The Sandman", "American Gods",or "Good Omens")and I have three little Tidbits that are really interesting in regards to changes form the book to the Silver screen 1. There is no Wybie. Yeah. Wybie does not exist in the books. Coraline trapped the hand at the end with a clever ruse. 2. That Tunnel Coraline goes through? In the book it does not look this magical, it is dark, but kind of warm and it turns out... it is alive. I'm just gonna quote the books here directly: "It was an uphill run, and it seemed to her that it went on for a longer distance than anything could possibly go. The wall she was touching seemed warm and yeilding now, and, she realised, it felt as if it was covered in a fine downy fur. It moved, as if it were taking a breath. She snatched her hand away from it. (..) This time what she touched felt hot and wet, as if she had put her hand in somebody’s mouth, and she pulled it back with a small wail.(...) She knew that if she fell in that corridor she might never get up again. Whatever that corridor was was older by far than the other mother. It was deep, and slow, and it knew that she was there…" 3. In the book, the Beldame is not mentioned to have scissor hands. As far as the description goes we can assume the hands are flesh and blood. The handdetaching scene still happens. You can draw your own conclusion from here
The closest film we'll ever get to a stop motion style Groundhog Day! LOL I'm fixin' to purchase this twisted film, I'm lovin' it, I have no doubt it was 8 I would have been having nightmares! LOL
This movie was stop-motion in case nobody answered that for you already. It's really in a league of its own in that there's not really anything like it that I've seen. Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach (both from the same director as Coraline) have a similar stop-motion animation style, yes, but Coraline feels unique even compared to them IMO.
If you want to watch any scary or horror movies for October I definitely recommend starting with a classic like Nightmare on Elm Street . Unless you've already seen it. You may recognize some famous actors.
I’ve always loved kids movies like this, the ones that make you question how it’s for kids, like Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart, corpse bride, the last unicorn, ect, they just have this specific vibe. it’s confusing and creepy but both are what make it so special, it’s a specific feeling and have a way of making it impossible to look away or not be interested even if you have seen it many times. The confusion or lack of interest is usually the down fall of movies, but for these movies that’s what makes them so good. You aren’t supposed to understand it like that, the more confused you are enhances the experience, i don’t think I can put it into words that can do it justice but I tired and I hope it’s somewhat understandable

Yes, this movie is definitely unsettling. It reminds me of old fairy tales--the ones that were clearly not intended for children! (The Victorians were the ones that cleaned them up and made them cute and pretty. The originals are pretty horrifying.) My favorite horror movie? That would be Tremors. I like my horror with a big helping of comedy! ;D

(it's based on the video-game series btw if you didn't know) It is literally the most accurate game-to-movie adaptation ever in history. Creator of the games wrote the movie script himself, it's gonna be a masterpiece. It's an extremely underrated franchise with heaps of story that's honestly insane. It could literally win rewards for best story.

This was my FAVORITE movie as a kid and even now it’s in my top 2 movies! This movie is STOP MOTION which makes it even more impressive
